According to Xbox Live General Manager Marc Whitten, players who still use Xbox Live on original consoles will be lucked out starting on April 15. This decision extends to original Xbox games which include multiplayer, such as Halo 2, a first-person shooter that defined an era the of multiplayer experience.

Xbox Live celebrated its seventh year of existence in 2009 with a big bang. In the past year, they have introduced the gaming world to Netflix, a platform that instantly allows you to watch movies with up to 8 people in an Xbox Live Party. Also, social networking sites were merged for more convenience, such as Twitter and Facebook. With 23 million people strong, Xbox Live shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon despite the annual $50 fee it takes to access its servers. The Xbox Live community is known for its loyal fanbase and its stable community because of all of the features Xbox Live offers.

You might be wondering what decisions were behind the idea of discontinuing Xbox Live for original Xbox users. According to Whitten, in order to make changes and modifications to the future of Xbox Live, there would be features that would make compatibility in the Xbox nearly impossible. That being said, after much debate, they’ve decided to altogether stop the Xbox Live service for original Xbox users with the intent to bring new innovations to Xbox Live. With the upcoming arrival of “Project Natal,” it doesn’t seem like much of a stretch that important updates are necessary for the latest technology for Xbox Live.

With a community as strong as Xbox Live, changes were inevitably going to happen. Eventually, there would have to be a stop to the now older Xbox in order to move forward. With that in mind, if you’re still stuck in the original Xbox era, take a deep breath and relax. Maybe it’s time you upgrade your console and buy yourself an Xbox 360.

Farewell Halo 2, you’ve had a good run while it lasted.

I'm just a Photography major with a passion for video games. Sarcasm usually follows my writing along with my passion. You can usually find me on Xbox Live playing MW2 or watching a horror movie on Netflix.

While I’ll admit this makes me a bit sad, it’s not as if I’d really been playing any original Xbox titles at all lately. However, in light of the end of an era, I’ll likely try to organize a Halo 2 farewell party of sorts :p
