In this thread you can ask foolish questions, discuss rules etc without breaking character. When we're ready to start I'll post an In Character thread where we play the actual game.

So, first up, choose a character and give your character a name. There are two different characters to choose from:

- an out of shape private detective, formerly of the vice squad
- a gangster who ratted out his boss and now works as muscle for the detective

Also, please let me know about your roleplaying experience. Did you participate in Mountains of Madness, did you play D&D in high school, that sort of thing.

Here's a bit of information on the system while we wait for things to kick off. The basic idea is that any action you want to take makes use of an identity (attributes in capitals) and a quality (attributes in lowercase). On your character sheet, each pair of qualities are linked opposites. For example Generosity and Selfishness are one pair of opposites, and Honesty and Deceit are another pair. The identities also come in pairs, like PATIENCE and CUNNING.

When you want to do something, the GM (me!) will tell you which identity to use for that action, and which of the four qualities under that identity on the character sheet apply to the action.

For example, let's say Willy wants to bribe a cop. That's CUNNING + Generosity. On the other hand, if Willy wants to beat up a helpless drunk, that's VIGOR + Wrath. What if Willy wants to seduce a nun? PERSUASION + Corruption.

When you know what applies to the action, you add up the dots next to the identity and the dots next to the quality, and roll that many d10. So for the persuasive corruption to seduce the nun, that would be PERSUASION ●● + Corruption ●● = 4d10. If you get any pairs, three of a kind, etc, in the result, that's a success. If all the dice are different, you fail.

Give the dice roller a try with the persuasive corruption and see if you can get any sets.

Seedy! No sets there, so the nun would turn down Willy's compelling suggestion.

Another way you can use the roller is to do all the dice at once, then click on the result to see the individual die values. So if Willy is beating down a drunk with 5 dice of vigorous wrath, you can do it like this:

5d10 5d10 = (10 + 1 + 1 + 8 + 2) = 22

Clicking on the 22 shows a pair of ones -- a success.

Either way is fine. What's best for me is if you edit your post after you roll to spell out any sets that you got, e.g.

Mega roll! 10d10 = (10 + 5 + 1 + 9 + 4 + 5 + 1 + 7 + 9 + 3) = 54 = 2x9, 2x5, 2x1

Richard Sheehan (the detective)

- Like most Irish descendants, Richard grew up hard and fast on the city's streets. The son of a seamstress and a beat cop, Richard knew he'd grow up to be a cop. What he didn't know was that he'd also end up being an ex-cop.

A dedication to serve the people of his city kept Richard from much of a social life outside the precinct, and young idealism pushed him toward the vice squad in his early thirties. Now 46, Richard's life is far from what he expected. Too many nights on stakeout, and too many donuts have left him with a shadow of his youthful physique, and without a wife to share it with. Problems with a bookie (and a couple of bad tips from his cousin) left Richard with a significant debt, one that he tried to cover by shaking down the whores and pushers that form the dirty underbelly of the city. Someone in the precinct finally blew the whistle on Richard, and that ended his career in blue.

Now, Richard scrapes his way through life, and between bottles of bourbon, as a private detective, working as rarely as he can, while covering the bills.

Aside: I hope it's okay that I wrote a bit of back-story for Richard (yes, yes, Dick, let's have a little fun with this too). If so, awesome. If you've already got the back-story made up, by all means, pretend I didn't write any of that.

I played a lot of AD&D (2nd Ed) in high school, which was 15-19 years ago. Since then, I have not, though I do play some of the RPGier video games (like Fallout 3, etc.). I also used to DM a little bit in high school, but that was usually just in smash and dash dungeon crawls without a lot of story. I didn't even find out about Mountains of Madness until it was too late, and that made me think "Man, I hope something like this happens again!"

Looking forward to it.

Cheers,
Mark

The back story is great! Feel free to add any details about the characters or the detective agency as we go along. If you want to introduce any NPCs as we play (a friend in the force, a sympathetic barman) that's cool too. Here's your character sheet:

Richard Sheehan
PATIENCE ● CUNNING ●●●
Generosity ● Selfishness ●
Demonstration ● Observation ●●

VIGOR ● GRACE ●●
Courage ● Wrath ●
Endurance ● Defiance ●

UNDERSTANDING ● PERSUASION ●
Purity ●● Corruption ●
Honesty ● Deceit ●●

Profession: Detective (Selfishness–Observation)
Combat Potential (Vigor + Grace + Wrath + Courage): ●●●●●
Equipment: Hip flask of cheap bourbon, handcuffs, creased photo of the dame who done him wrong

Okay, I'll come up with a bit of a back story for Willy later too. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to.

(Oh boy, Willy and Dick. Perhaps they have friends named Peter and Wang?)

OK, I think we're pretty much ready to begin. The In Character thread is here: [IC] A Dame Scorned (Table 1 - Willy and Dick).

Just like this thread, subscribe to it and thumb the posts that you've read. Also, don't roll any dice in the In Character thread unless I ask you to. This is to prevent disappointment when you try to fast talk a deaf guy and roll a beautiful set of 5x10, which we then have to throw away.

When you post in that thread, use italics for in character actions, "quoted italics" for speech, plain text for tabletalk about gameplay and grey text for brief out of character questions and comments. Longer questions, rules discussions, chitchat etc belongs in this OOC thread. All in character stuff that isn't speech should be in the third person. For example:

---

Willy has a feeling he's seen this sexy nun before. Down at the strip club, perhaps? He moves in close and gives her the eye.

"Maybe it's the giggle juice speakin' for me, but shweethaht, your habit is makin' me all kind of hot and bothered. Dance?"

Mr. GM, do I roll for Corrupt Persuasion now?

OOC: Hey, this reminds me that I really did see a sexy nun at lunctime today. It was awesome.

What happens if both of us post responses to a GM post around the same time (having not seen one's partner's comments) and they are conflicting?

That looks like the end of scene one. Since you completed a scene (scene 1, in the office) you may adjust your characters a little. How this works is that at the end of a scene you can choose to slide a dot over from one quality to its opposite. You can't slide dots between identities like VIGOR and GRACE, only matched pairs of qualities, like Honesty and Deceit. Your professions also give you an extra option, letting you slide dots between two unmatched qualities. For Dick, the extra option is Selfishness-Observation, and for Willy the extra option is Wrath-Defiance.

You can also earn one extra dot in each scene by roleplaying some quality particularly well. For example, if you gave Aggie all of her back pay I might give you a free dot of Generosity at the end of the scene.
