Welcome to the July 2012 edition of the GMT P500 update list. The purpose of this list is to showcase all the new games coming through the GMT P500 system.

Subscribe today: GMT Monthly P500 Geeklist Announcement Thread

Summer is here. Summer is a quieter gaming time of year for me because it's the time for family vacations, camping trips, back yard barbecues, socializing, and getting outside when the sun it out.

In GMT news, Dominant Species (the card game) and Andean Abyss have both now charged and will be shipping this month. Crown of Roses and Panzer are charging this week, and Bloody April and the two Panzer expansions are charging later this month. The time to pre-order for those is now.

At the rate I'm acquiring new games, some of these might not hit the table until fall.

But, very soon, Red Winter is coming. I can hardly wait.

mb An amazing 115 of you now own this lovely microbadge. Thank you! Last month's contest to give people geek gold for buying the microbadge was a huge success. Thank you to everyone who participated.

Comments: Congratulations Carl on seeing your sequel make the cut.

Game Link: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-392-no-retreat-the-north-african-f...

Game Information: Following on the success of No Retreat: The Russian Front, where the Russian Front of World War II beckons, Victory Point Games' dynamic duo of game designer Carl Paradis and his trusty developer Alan Emrich have teamed up again to present the second chapter in this game series, No Retreat: The North African Front. This time they take the gaming action to the African Front, from the start of Operation Compass on 8 December 1940, through 1942 to the eviction of the Axis from Libya.

Building on the notion of a card assisted game and death-or-glory victory conditions, No Retreat: The North African Front offers a narrative game rich in the feel for the ebb-and-flow of the campaign, wrapped around an exciting maneuver and combat system that harkens back to the glory days of classic wargaming, but includes all the modern features and plenty of innovations. Unlike other North Africa wargames, there are 5 "mini-maps" located at the various termini of maneuver in the campaign, and where battles are waged as fascinating "mini-games" in their own right. Players try to sweep each map and force the action onto the next one in an effort to push their opponent out of the game.

This Deluxe Edition combines both the original game, featuring Five quick-playing scenarios, a Tournament Game, a Full-Fledged Campaign game, and a Bonus "Invasion of Crete" mini-game, all using deluxe components of "Twillight Struggle Deluxe Edition" quality.

Comments: With Red Winter now out, it'll be interesting to see how this title grows.

Game Link: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-315-operation-dauntless.aspx

Game Information: Operation Dauntless is a moderately complex wargame that covers the actions of the British 49th Infantry Division a.k.a "The Polar Bears" near Caen during Operation Martlet (called Operation Dauntless by the British at the time of the battle). Opposing these lads are elements of the 12th SS Panzer Division "Hitlerjugend" (Hitler Youth) and Panzer Lehr- elite panzergrenadier units. The goal of the British division is to seize the town of Fontenay, then press onward to secure the high ground near Rauray in time for the impending Operation Epsom, to be launched the next morning.

The game by designer Mark Mokszycki uses the same system as Red Winter, his game on the Battle of Tolvajärvi from the Russo-Finnish Winter War of 1939. The scale and key mechanics of Operation Dauntless are the same as Red Winter. Proposed future games in the series include Red Winter 2: The Battle of Ägläjärvi, Guadalcanal Land Battles, Scottish Corridor: The Battle for Cheux, and the Breaking the Panzers expansion for Operation Dauntless, covering the German counterattack at Point 110 (all are working titles and subject to change).

The scale is grand tactical- 90 minutes per game turn, 425 yards per hex, and mostly company sized infantry units with platoon sized armor units. Gone are the Winter War specific rules such as ski movement and night raids, and in their place we have a more detailed armor/anti-tank subsystem. There are lots of tanks on both sides in this one!

Designer: Mark Mokszycki

Current Preorders: 545 (+15)

First announced: June 2011

Current Status: Made the cut

Preorder Price (List Price): $39 ($59)

Number of Players: 2 (easily playable solo according to the design team)

Comments: Still moving up the charts.

Game Link: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-352-the-dark-valley.aspx

Game Information: The Dark Valley is a new game from award-winning designer Ted Raicer, focusing on the entire East Front campaign in World War II. The game components feature a beautiful map from Mark Mahaffey (see GMT web site), stretching from Leningrad in the north to the Caucasus Mountains in the south, and around 600 counters representing every major unit that appeared during the course of the conflict. Initially most Soviet infantry are divisions, but as the game progresses these are replaced by armies and corps, so that players are not overwhelmed by the increasing Soviet Order of Battle. All German mechanized divisions are present in the game, while their infantry is a mix of division and corps.

Although the game is a semi-monster, and covers the entirety of the conflict from the launch of Barbarossa to the end of the war, the game system emphasizes playability rather than rules overhead, allowing the players to concentrate on strategy choices rather than rules minutiae.

The core of the game system is a “chit-pull” activation system. Each turn a variety of action chits are drawn, in a random order, from the Action Chit Pool, and it is this that determines the exact flow of operations on that turn. If a German “Move/Combat” chit is drawn, the German player decides to move or fight (but not both), with all Axis units. If a German PZ HQ chit is drawn, units in command range of that HQ can move and conduct combat (with greater flexibility for armored units). If the Soviet Stavka chit is drawn, units may be deployed from Stavka Reserve to attempt to stem the Axis onslaught. If the Soviet Counterattack chit is drawn, Stalin insists that the attacks are made upon the fascist invaders, possibly to the detriment of the overall defense. When the Logistics chit is drawn, supply status is checked for all units.

Comments: The iOS version of Levée en Masse was just recently announced. For iPad only however, which is too bad since I was going to snap it up for my iPhone.

Game Link: https://www.gmtgames.com/p-382-revolt-and-revolution.aspx

Game Information: Revolt and Revolution is the newest offering from our strategic partnership with Victory Point Games, and the first game we are producing from their immensely popular States of Siege series. The idea for this and future volumes is to thematically take two existing titles from VPG's States of Siege line and add a third as-yet-unpublished game to the pack to create a GMT boxed set using larger counters, full sized cards, and mounted maps, all utilizing the talents of GMT's art and production team.

The first game in the pack is by series creator Darin Leviloff. Soviet Dawn: The Russian Civil War 1918 - 1921 puts you in the position of defending the Bolshevik Revolution from the array of 'White' forces bent on its destruction. Can you deal with the great crises of that time and defend the revolution? Will you withdraw from the Great War (WWI) or exercise the Bukharin Option and fight on? Can you execute the Czar in time, or will the 'Whites' rescue him? Will you fortify Petrograd or press your offensives home? How will you deal with internal and external dissent? These are just some of the challenges to meet as you decide the fate of Communism in the 20th century. Revolt and Revolution will include both the base game Soviet Dawn and its expansion pack.

The second game in the tri-pack is from series developer John Welch. Levée en Masse: The Wars of the French Revolution 1789 - 1802 puts you in the position of defending the Republican Revolution from forces both within and outside of France, during the tumultuous years of the French. Can you suppress the forces of Monarchy and Despotism to maintain the Republican spirit in France? Can you export the revolution by liberating neighboring states and creating sister Republics? Will you be able to keep order in Paris as it suffers from riot after riot? Can you rally your armies to defeat those of rival European states like Britain, Prussia and Austria? These are just a few of the obstacles you must overcome to end Monarchy and bring forth the era of Republican government that will transform Europe in the 19th century. Revolt and Revolution will include both the base game Levée en Masse and its expansion pack.

The third game in Volume I is a never-before-published game in the States of Siege series! Cruel Necessity: The English Civil Wars 1640 - 1653 puts you in charge of Puritanism and Parliament and their attempts to usher in the Reformation and Age of Reason. Can you create a fighting force capable of defeating the Royalist Armies of Charles I? Can you foster Puritan religious reforms while suppressing those of your rival Protestants and hated Catholics? Can you forge an alliance with the Covenanters of Scotland and prevent them for going over to the King? Can you manage the rebellions in Ireland without draining too many men and resources to do so? These are just some of the dilemmas you must balance in order to bring an end to Divine Right Monarchy and usher in the Age of Revolution. The GMT edition will include a grand tactical combat mini-game in addition to the base game of Cruel Necessity - after all, what fun would an English Civil War game be with the charge of cavalry and the push-of-pikes?

Comments: This game looks to be a reasonably manageable monster.

Game Link: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-354-the-battle-for-sicily.aspx

Game Information: Fresh off the success of his "easy to play monster" system in GMT's The Battle for Normandy, Designer Dan Holte now brings us another BIG game, taking the system to the 1943 invasion of Sicily by Allied forces.

The Battle for Sicily uses the base system from GMT's The Battle for Normandy. The German Luftwaffe makes their presence known in this one, while the Allied player has post-invasion "end-around" landings available.

Along with the standard campaign game will be a 3-player "Monty vs. Patton vs. Axis" scenario, where the US & UK players will be competing for total victory, while still trying to maintain victory conditions over the Axis player.

Preorder Price (List Price): $55 ($79)

Comments: I'm sad to see this one move so slowly.

Game Link: http://gmtgames.com/p-297-wild-blue-yonder.aspx

Complexity: Not listed
Solitaire Suitability: Not listed

Game Information: In 1992, GMT released Rise of the Luftwaffe, the first Down in Flames WWII air combat card game. That game covered the early part of the War in Europe, from 1939 to early 1942. It was followed a few years later by the 8th Air Force expansion module, which added aircraft and campaigns for the latter part of the war.

Since then there have been two more games, two packs of additional aircraft, and a large number of C3i modules for the series. However, the original two games have been long out of print. GMT has considered a number of options to address that, from straight reprints to a base game/ campaign module arrangement. Finally, though, the company has decided to P500 an entire new game covering the WHOLE war in the ETO.

Wild Blue Yonder will be a true deluxe Down in Flames product. It will contain 16-20 full campaigns, nearly 300 aircraft cards, plus all of the necessary targets, resource sheets etc. needed for play. All of this will be packaged in a large box similar to the ones for the Combat Commander games.

Many of the campaigns will be on the same subjects as those in Rise of the Luftwaffe, 8th Air Force and various C3i modules. However, they will not be simple reprints of those campaigns. For example, due to card mix limitations the Fall of France campaign in Rise of the Luftwaffe included only one type of French aircraft. This will not be the case in the new game.

In addition, Wild Blue Yonder will contain two different types of campaigns, Land Campaigns and Strategic Bombing campaigns. The first type will be the familiar “standard” DiF campaign that players of the system are used to. The second type, though, will give both players a fixed “order of battle” along with reinforcements and replacements that they will have to use throughout the campaign. This will reflect the more attritional nature of these air campaigns.

Wild Blue Yonder will also include a number of Tour of Duty mini-campaigns. Each of these will be a series of dogfights from the careers of various well-known aces of the war. Those of you who want to more about this can check out C3i #21, which contains a Tour of Duty campaign featuring the Pacific ace George Welch.

Finally, the game will include at least one solitaire campaign for players who don’t have an opponent available.

Wild BlueYonder promises to be the best Down in Flames game yet. So strap on your parachute and get ready to take to the skies!

Game Link: http://gmtgames.com/p-332-roads-to-moscow.aspx

Game Information: "All summer they drove us back through the Ukraine
Smolensk and Vyasma soon fell
By Autumn we stood with backs to the town of Orel
Closer and closer to Moscow they come
Riding the wind like a bell...."
- Al Stewart, Roads to Moscow

Roads to Moscow is a two-player game depicting battles in the Soviet Union during the drive on Moscow in October 1941. The two separate battles shown in this game are named for the main objective city on each map, Mozhaysk to the west of Moscow, and Mtsensk to the south. Perhaps the most dramatic of the many desperate battles fought in front of Moscow, these two battles combined all the elements of the great struggle. The Germans have an excellent fighting machine but are short on fuel and time. They must capture their objectives on a tight schedule or snow and mud will end their offensive. The Soviets are down to the rearward remnants of their once immense armies. If the Soviets can avoid being encircled by the fast moving German forces, high quality reinforcements from the Far East may finally allow them to stop the German advance.

Game Link: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-353-navajo-wars.aspx

Game Information: NAVAJO WARS is a solitaire game which covers one of the longest struggles waged on the North American continent. From the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in 1595 until Colonel Christopher “Kit” Carson’s brutal Navajo Campaign of 1863, the Diné — the Navajo — fought to preserve their way of life.

In NAVAJO WARS, you the player must use skillful planning and cunning against a constantly changing and aggressive enemy. NAVAJO WARS uses a unique mix of cards and an enemy instruction matrix to drive the actions of the enemy. More than just chart-checking and die-rolling, in NAVAJO WARS, the player has to make lots of meaningful decisions in order to win.

Although NAVAJO WARS has been designed from the beginning as a Solitaire Game, the game does include two ways to play with TWO-Players: First, two players can play the game cooperatively, with both players discussing their options and making decisions together.

For players wanting a more competitive game, NAVAJO WARS includes an innovative semi-cooperative variant. In this variant, both players must work together because if the Tribe is defeated, they BOTH lose! Nevertheless, only ONE player can win! To win, each player attempts to establish his influence over the tribe. Throughout the game, players must balance what’s best for them against what’s best for the tribe as a whole. This makes for a very tense (and historically accurate) gaming experience!

Game Information: The Supreme Commander is a game designed for 2-5 players covering the entirety of World War II in the European Theater of Operations (ETO), from September 1939 to the end of the war. While there are plenty of other ETO games out there, The Supreme Commander effectively models all of the primary aspects of the war in a simple, straight-forward manner.

Murmansk convoy, Lend-Lease, diplomacy, the strategic U-Boat campaign, technological advancement, strategic bombing campaigns, naval invasions, the economy and military production, partisans – All of these elements and more are included in a surprisingly easy-to-learn game.

Note: We are doing much of the final system and balance testing of this game online using a (beautiful) Vassal module. Game Information: Fading Glory is the second game (No Retreat - The Russian Front Deluxe Edition is the first) we are producing as part of our strategic friendship/partnership with Victory Point Games, and the first game we are producing from their popular Napoleonic 20 series. The idea for this and future volumes is that we will take multiple existing games from the VPG Napeoleonic 20 series, add an as-yet-unpublished game to the mix, and create a GMT boxed game with 3-4 games in the box, using larger (3/4") counters and GMT production.

The Napoleonic 20 game system from Victory Point Games features lower-level wargame complexity on maps where, generally, 20 pieces or less are in play at one time (total, for both sides). This creates tense, dramatic and fast-playing situations on the board where higher echelon troop formations (generally corps) vie for position and dominance. Subscribers to C3i have recently enjoyed Jena 20, a game in this series which features eight pages of Standard rules and one-to-two pages of exclusive rules per title.

Included in this Multi-Pack are:
* Salamanca 20 (Wellington vs. Marmont, 1812)
* Smolensk 20 (Napoleon vs. Barclay de Tolly in the near-battle to decide the Russian Campaign, 1812)
* Borodino 20 (Napoleon vs. Kutusov before Moscow, 1812)
* Waterloo 20 (Napoleon vs. Blucher and Wellington, 1815)

Comments: In the spirit of the bicentennial of this war, I present this entertaining clip:

Game Link: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-348-mr-madisons-war.aspx

Game Information: In June of 1812, Napoleon invaded Russia. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, the young Republic of the United States declared war on Great Britain. It was one of America's most unpopular wars. To commemorate the bi-centennial of this historic event, GMT will be releasing Mr. Madison's War, a strategy game based on the US campaigns to conquer Canada in the years 1812 to 1814.

Mr. Madison's War is a simulation game that depicts the war on the northern frontier of the United States and Canada. From the European perspective it was an off shoot of the Napoleonic Wars that were waged from 1796 to 1815. It is a two player game with players taking the forces of either the United States or Great Britain.

Mr. Madison's War utilizes a variation of Mark Herman's 'card driven game system' which enables players to perform their actions on the game board and score automatic points for the playing of a card as an historical event. The 110 colorful cards include historical information, the year the event took place, and a detailed description of the function of the card.

Game Information: The Panzers Roll....

The tanks prepare for action. The fuel tanks topped off and the ammo loaded. The commanders confer one final time to review the battle plan. They await your orders.

As the fog clears, your beleaguered battle group once again moves into position to cover the retreating infantry. It is their only possible escape route. Failure is not an option – it never is. Your ranks have thinned since your first days on the Eastern Front. Those once halcyon times have now come and gone. The objective is simple. It is just a matter of holding the line until the reinforcements arrive.

The sharp report of a tank gun to your right quickly focuses your attention back to the situation at hand. The enemy is quickly advancing. You order the flank element to engage, all the while keeping a sharp eye peeled to the left thinking this is just another diversionary feint.

Again, your suspicions are correct. Their main force just broke over the rise on your left. You order the main body forward. The engines rumble, the guns crack and explosions erupt. Your forces will once more carry the day!

Comments: About the only thing that can sell faster than the best selling game in GMT history is the digital edition of it. For Windows only alas, but will allow you to play solo or live. No official word yet on whether a pbem mode will be supported - stay tuned!

Game Link: http://www.gmtgames.com/p-397-twilight-struggle-digital-edit...

Game Information: Since its release in 2005, GMT's Twilight Struggle boardgame has brought the strategic challenges of fighting the Cold War to life on the game tables of tens of thousands of strategy game players worldwide. Over the years, one of the most oft-repeated pieces of feedback from players of Twilight Struggle has been "When are you going to make a Twilight Struggle computer game that lets us play against an AI and against other players?" We've been working on the answer to that question for the past 18 months or so, and are now ready to tell you that the answer is firmly "Coming in Late 2012!" So, as of today, Twilight Struggle, Digital Edition, is officially available for Pre-Order.

Game Features:
This is a computer game for Windows PC that faithfully recreates the Twilight Struggle boardgame. All of the cards, rules, and gameplay options are included. Winning strategies for the boardgame will work just as well here (well, except for those times when the AI is truly evil!)
The game allows for both solo play against a computer AI as well as Internet Play versus a live opponent.
You can Save and Resume games in progress.
The User Interface is designed with an auto zoom feature that allows you to use the mousewheel to quickly pan and precisely zoom in to an area of interest or back out to see the big picture.
The game's operations system is visual and easy to use, allowing card play to be allocated and completed with only mouseclicks - to choose the card, how to use the card, and the location(s) you want to use the card.
Adding and subtracting Influence is accomplished quickly and easily by clicking the top or bottom of the number area in each country.
Current region scores can be inspected by hovering the mouse over region score areas.
Countries eligible for influence placement, coup and realignment are highlighted when selecting the respective options, but before a decision is made
Card Effects, blocked events, discards, removed cards, early/mid/late war cards can all be viewed at any time.
A card tray provides an easy summary of held cards, including their Ops value, faction and event playability.
Real-time chat window for PvP play.
Map automatically zooms to affected countries during play.
Game play options include use of Optional cards, Tournament Play, and Chinese Civil War.

Game Information: The Bohemian Revolt of 1618 triggered the Thirty Years War and in the early period of the war the Catholic/Imperial cause enjoyed an almost unbroken string of victories. This game, part of the Musket and Pike Battle Series, simulates six battles of the early Thirty Years War. In the period covered, the armies deployed in more compact formations so each battle fits on half of a standard map.

The battles covered in this game are: White Mountain, November 1620; Wimpfen, May 1622; Höchst, June 1622; Fleurus, August 1622; Stadtlohn,
August 1623; Lutter am Barenberg, August 1626.

In addition to scenario specific special rules that highlight the unique events of each battle, the battles in the game all share a simple set of special rules. These rules show the peculiarities of the early years of the Thirty Years War, such as Croat/Transylvanian style light cavalry.

During the Seven Years’ War, small Prussia under Frederick the Great defeated the armies of Austria, Russia, and France to increase the size of its territories two fold and become a major power in Europe. But in spite of Prussia’s reputation as a formidable fighting nation, Prussia withdrew from the First Coalition as an active opponent of the French Revolution and remain on the sidelines until the Fourth Coalition in 1806.

Game Information: The Austrian Army is a Coalition expansion for Commands & Colors Napoleonics.

Prior to the Napoleon wars, the Austrian Empire stretched from Italy to the Netherlands and from Poland to the Balkans. Its position in the center of Europe, however, made it the perfect target for revolutionary France and in April 1792, France declared war on Austria. The first war lasted for 5 years. Austria renewed the war against France in 1799 and again in 1805, but in both cases was swiftly defeated. In April 1809, judging that Napoleon’s army was bogged down with the fighting in Spain, Austria invaded Bavaria, but Napoleon recovered quickly and Austria’s defeat at Wagram led to another humiliating peace treaty. In 1812 Austria was forced to provide troops for Napoleon’sthe disastrous Russian campaign, but in 1813 Austria again joined the coalition against him.

Russia, was ruled until 1796 by Catherine the Great. It would then suffer under "Mad" Tsar Paul I, until his assassination in 1801, which brought his son Alexander I to the throne. Alexander, in command of a Russian army that was as vast as the territory from which it was drawn, did his best by various treaties and alliances to counter the increasing power of France under Napoleon without going to war.

Game Information: Great Campaigns of the Thirty Years War (GCo30YW) is a two-player game of operational warfare in the 17th Century. Armies maneuver on a point to point map of Southern Germany based on the road network available at the time. Each game is centered around a major battle or full campaign season. A Turn is a month divided into a variable number of impulses. Each army has a hand of Campaign Cards that control the amount of activity it may perform, the supplies it must expend, and a special action. Each impulse features one card play per army. Forces are concealed off map so players are faced with limited knowledge of the enemy. The major activities are maneuver, foraging, besieging fortifications, and an occasional battle. GCo30YW is a low-complexity game with emphasis on the players maneuvering their forces, but many decisions await. The low rules complexity allows each player, rather than being encumbered with rules, to focus on choices regarding how to manage his campaign.

Game Information: The Hunters is a solitaire tactical level game placing you in command of a German U-boat during WWII. Your mission is to destroy as much Allied Shipping and as many Capital ships as possible while advancing your crew quality and increasing your commander rank culminating in special decoration ‒ all while remembering you have to make it home.

The Hunters is purposely designed to deliver a brisk yet intensive gaming experience that forces many decisions upon you as you will take command among the major German U-boat models in service during WWII, and try to complete an entire tour. If you ultimately survive all patrols from 1939 to 1943, you will be transferred to the U-boat Training Command for the remainder of the war, having successfully carried out your service for the Fatherland.

Those familiar with the classic Avalon Hill game title, B-17: Queen of the Skies, will come to enjoy the same type of gaming experience of the German U-boat War. All major U-boat models are accounted for with every level of detail including period of service, armaments, crew make-up, damage capacity, and more.

The strengths and weaknesses of each alien empire are brought out with roughly 20 unique racial abilities. The expansion takes advantage of the streamlined nature of the game system to add more technology and cool sci-fi things in very simple ways. While it is designed to be used as a whole, the expansion is modular and players can choose to use only the parts that they like.

Also included in the expansion is an experience system so that your ship groups become more proficient over time. There is a big benefit if you can keep ships alive! The game gives more counters of each ship type to accommodate groups at different experience levels. Military academies in your empire can give your new groups a head start in accumulating experience.
