Hey I'm Samuel Sol, a.k.a. yohanleafheart, a.k.a. the crazy programmer. You may know me from a lot of different movies, like "Botching up some code", "The BGG.con 2010 Proposal", "The bastard who limits screenshots". I was also, when VGG started our own resident Dave, but that duty has already been taken off my hands.

But enough of me, let's talk about games show we? I'm mostly an RPG and Strategy player. And even though I love JRPG, I don't like anything on the Final Fantasy series, except for Final Fantasy Tactics. Among my favorite games are Suikoden, Diablo II, Civilization and L.A. Noire (which I considered the best recent game). I was once the RPG Geek of the Week, so some of my personal introduction can be found there. I was drawn to video games through the Atari 2600 and later I became a Sega man. On to the questions.

- What is the worst game you ever played (and why)?
This is a hard question since I normally stop playing bad guys after quick while. I would have to say though World of Warcraft. It was boring as hell. And let me tell you I played tons of City of Heroes, so it is not a case of hating MMOs.

- What is your favorite video game-related memory?
Multiplayer Diablo II with my housemates and 72 hours of StarCraft at my university lab during the weekend.

- How long was your longest single VG-playing-session ever (and what game(s))?
The aforementioned StarCraft one;

- What is your current platform of choice?
HI! I'm a PC!

- What are you playing now, and what will you be playing next?
L.A. Noire and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. After that it will be probably Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity or Batman: Arkham Asylum

[b]- Do you ever cheat in games?

Not normally. I do use the Save + Load system a lot when played old console games on emulator when I'm not in the mood for not getting 100%. I use Walkthroughs sometimes, specially on systems like Craft when I'm not bothered with it. And it is also one of the reasons I hate Final Fantasy, there are things there, on most of the games that you can only get if you check a FAQ.

- What is your favorite contribution (of yours or of another user) to VGG (provide a link, if possible)?
Since I code for BGG, I will let you guys tell me what was the best thing I did. I will probably say that it is the Lotteries.

Congratulations, Sol.

I have a couple of questions:

1. Do you feel that video games are an art form or an entertainment?
2. How did you come up with your user name?

I think the Lotteries are indeed an amazing achievement.

A 72 hour Starcraft binge. Do you ever have nightmares where you hear "your base is under attack, your forces are under attack"?

My usual questions:~

Let's get to it.

Quote:
1. What is the strangest video game you have ever played?

See, that's why I don't like making a top n list, a game that should be there and I completely forgot when righting, and which is one of the best games of all time is Katamari Damacy. If you need to know why it is strange, let me just share you the intro.

Quote:
2. What's you're favorite meal?

A good Brazilian Barbecue.

Quote:
3. What's you're favorite drink?

Non alcoholic it would be Passion Fruit Juice, alcoholic it would be Gin Tonic. Preferable using Sapphire Gin.

Quote:
4. Do you (or have you ever) played Board or RPG Games?

Yup, tons of both. Board Games, if you ignore child games like Game of Life, and CCG, came into my life in 2006. RPGs I've been playing since I was 11.

5. Will you congratulate you're BGG and RPGG counterparts?

Yes, Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game. I love it. It is not as good as the original video game, but it is still amazing.

Katamari Damacy =D

A good runnerup is L.A. Noire.

Hmmmm. So bad it is good? I can't think of one right now. I will come back to you as soon as I do.

Quote:

Yes, a couple of friends have been working on some, one of them is RibbitHop for the iPhone. BTW I need to add that to the database

Quote:
Why is it your video game collection is so small?

One because I don't have many games, since I got rid of most of them when I stopped playing. Second because I haven't add them all yet blush

Quote:
d10-2Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter?

Winter. I also need to move somewhere with snow.

Quote:
d10-3Do you play an instrument? If yes, which one and for how long already?

The closes I got to playing anything was beating some songs at Medium on Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.

Quote:
d10-4Having fun?

Not as much as I could, I've been in a bit of pain this last weeks. Have a couple of exams coming Wednesday to check it out.

Quote:
d10-5What would have been your name if your parents didn't name you Samuel?

It would be only Sol. There is an interest legend around my name that my father tells:
legend my father says wrote:

See, there is a very funny legend about my name (I say legend because that's what my father told me, and since I wasn't born yet, I can't prove.) So my name was meant to be only Sol (Sun in Portuguese). But my father's family is very religious (Baptists) and they said that "No, it must be a christian name." They pissed my father so much that he said: "Ok, screw it, I will f***** open the bible at random and wherever book it is, that will be his name." (knowing my father, yeah, very much possible). So he openened and it landed in 1 Corinthians. So I was going to be called, Corithians Sol. They convinced him to open again and this time it landed on Samuel, and it became Samuel Sol. So yeah, that's why I prefer to be called Sol.

Quote:
d10-6What is your favourite snack?

Hmmm. We have a typical Brazilian snack called Enroladinho, which is a dough filled with Ham and Cheese, you can find it almost everywhere. I love it. If you are talking about branded, commercial snacks, Goiabinha is da bomb. It is filled with Goiabada, a guava candy typical from Brazil. Also, what I forgot to add last time, Pão de Queijo. I was talking with an Australian girl I know here and we don't understand how this thing is not getting exported. Seriously, it is as awesome as it is simple.

Quote:
d10-7 What is your favourite day of the week?

Sunday I think, but only because the traffic close to home is slower and so it is quieter.

Quote:
d10-8What is your favourite time of day?

Late night. When it is colder and quieter.

Quote:
d10-9 What character would you be in a Star Trek setting?

Kirk, I'm too sexy for my shirt.

Quote:
d10-1d10-0 What makes you "tick" (inspires you, why do you get up in the morning)?

Will it be cheese if I say Aline? Because that would be true. But a couple of black, strong coffee also works.

Quote:
d10-1d10-1 What is your life-long dream?

A peaceful beautiful place to live. Somewhere temperate, where the seasons are well marked, but with a ridiculous fast internet connection. Ah and a daughter that I would try to raise with the sole intent to make the world a more strange and random place

1. Do you feel that video games are an art form or an entertainment?

Neither and both. I see video games as a medium which can be used as you please. Same as TV, movies, etc. It is more interactive than most but still, if you compare to modern art installations, it makes sense. A game Mario Party is clearly sheer entertainment, but on the other Shadow of the Colossus or even Alone in the Dark can be considered art.

Quote:
2. How did you come up with your user name?

You should thank Baldur's Gate for that. I need a character name for the elf I was playing and came with Yohan Leafheart. It has since became my de jur nickname everywhere.

Quote:

As I always say on the header, we need to thank Blott for them. It was his idea. I just took over on the second month and made the tool.

No, but I have wonderful dreams with my memories of Nuclear Launch Detected!. I always played Terram, and we were playing mostly 2x2 during the binge, so I would turtle, make 4-5 nuclear silos and syncro-fire them. =D

mbWhat is the oddest video game system you have ever owned? Most remarkable controller?

Oddest? I didn't have much systems in my life. I've been mostly a PC gamer and the only other systems I had\have were SEGA Genesis, Atari 8-bit family, PlayStation 2. But I also had an strange thing you find in Brazil called the Polystation. It is a console made to look like a Playstation (now they look like a P3) with a ROM with 50+ SEGA Master System games.

On the controller front there was a knockoff set of Atari controllers which looked like a simple upright Yoke. Only thing that could handle the beating on The Activision Decathlon.

Quote:
mbDo you sport? If yes, what en tell us about it. If no, why not? What would be your favorite sport if your 1st choice didn't exist? What's your fav. sport to watch?

I used to play Rugby and Handball. We used to train and play Rugby at the beach when I lived in Cabo Frio, you can imagine how that was. I also use to swin. Rugby is still my fav sport and best one to watch. A close second is American Football.

Quote:
mbYou avatar says "Awesomeland" and you're from Brazil. Coincidence? Every tourist knows carnival. But if I went to Brazil, what would you recommend me to see?

Yeah, kind of coincidence, things aren't as Awesome as they were around here. Besides, I don't like Carnaval, specially the one you see on TV with the parade of the Escolas. I prefer the street parties which are more bizarre, more random and natural.

If you came here as a tourist, the first thing I would say would be to go to Cabo Frio, my hometown, to see some of the prettiest beachs in the world. Also around that region you have Búzios and Arraial do Cabo (which used to be boroughs of Cabo Frio, and became cities a couple of decades ago).

After that, you should go to Belém, Aline's hometown to taste a completely different cuisine, full of indigenous and Amazon influences. Where you have things like Maniçoba.

Either that or coming to São Paulo to taste the result of what years of immigration do to a cuisine, if everything gets mixed. São Paulo has the largest colony of Japanese and Italians outside of their native countries. Also lots of Germans, Bolivians, a couple of people from different Middle East countries, and nowadays lots of Chinese. So you fix all of that with the country own cuisine, and you have some very interesting results.

Not yet, but yes a plan to. There are a lot of, ... interesting, cultural tourism to be done there. whistle Even though you guys put some conservatives on power, which I can't fathom. More honestly, yeah I intend to visit it for sure. Aline and I are planning our honeymoon around a tour on Europe, probably by train. The Netherlands will be a sure spot. I have a guy from there coming to Brazil late last year and he brought a kind-of honey waffle (I forgot the name) which I absolutely loved. I need to get some more of that.

A mix of both. Budha was write when he said to follow the mid path. You can't be a cheating bastard, but at the same time, beauty, be that physical, emotional or natural, is one of the main reasons to live and improve.

Quote:
2) Speed or precision?

Precision but without procrastination.

Quote:
3) Justice or mercy?

Tough choice. I'm all for allowing people to redeem themselves, life knows that I've needed it from time to time. But there should always be justice to the victims, and mercy sometimes need to give place to vengeance.

Quote:
4) Steadfast or flexible?

Flexible. One of the things that I proud myself to is how easy I can deal with most situations and groups that I find. I have a set of core beliefs that I won't break, but aside of those, I try to be as flexible as possible with people.

Quote:
5) Cynicism or naivete?

Life made me a cynic. To be naive is a bless I sorely miss.

You may not pass until you answer my questions seven.

Are there swallows involved?

Quote:
1. What is the most underrated game in your opinion?

Anything on the Suikoden series. People get so excited about the shinning in that big pile of crap called Final Fantasy, that they don't look much further. Suikoden has the good decency to, except on Suikoden III which is the worst on the series, not have a main villain bend on dominating or destroying the world. The tensions is always local, spawning at most 3 kingdoms, all close to each other. It is easier to related with the story, even when the main character is still the normal teenage which will become great. For example, one of the things that is a common theme is that there will be a War, and you a destined to lead an army on it. Great, now go rise your army. 108 main characters that you need to get together to force it. Both as fighters and as supports like a chef, a farmer, etc.

Quote:
2. What would you like to change about the gaming industry?

The Draconian DRM would be a big first. The focus on the new shinning engine while forgetting the story is another.

Quote:
3. What do you love most about gaming?

Forgetting about the world and having fun for some time

Quote:
4. Given unlimited resources what game would you like to see developed?

A monster multiplayer (but not MMO) competitive Suikoden game. I have the full story developed in my head and lots of the mechanics.

Quote:
5. What is it about current gaming that has you excited?

The new rise of indie developers. Steam is doing a superb job helping them, and things like the The Humble Indie Bundle breath a new life on the industry that I love. As an example, Aquaria, which I acquire on the first bundle, is still one of the best games I played recently.

Quote:
6. What do you like most about where you live?

The access to basically anything I want. Foods from tons of different origins and cultures, various type of entertainment, even some that carter for my strange tastes.

Quote:
7. Tell us about some of your other hobbies.

Hmmm. Most of them are focused on the Geek. I play Boardgames, RPGs (although it has been an while since I played anything). I like watching sports, Football, American Footbal, Rugby, Golf... Besides that you are left with cooking, which is something that I need to pursue more in my life. If you check the The official Chit Chat Recipe Repository, you will see a lot of my creations there.

Turn Based, because I suck less at it. I tend to react too slow in RTS making it not that competitive.

We printed and framed our six favorite Sinfest comics (sunday colored ones) to hang them in the hallway. It took a lot of arguing interesting discussion to pick our top six. What's your favorite Sinfest comic? (apart from the Awesomeland one, of course!)

A favorite? Damn, that will be hard. My top 5 would be:

1. This is the easy one, this is the original of Awesomeland:

2. The first one set the perfect tone for the strip, it still important today:

3. All of the interactions between God and the Dragon are fantastic, but the Tagger God series wins simply because of this strip:

4. From the Sunday strips, the next one is the end of a fantastic story arc:

5. And of course, there is Abstinence Experiment

Hi Samuel, you T.O.S.S.E.R., congrats!

Tell me things about you!

1) What's the most frustrating game you entered in the database?
2) What was the first game you clocked (beat to satisfaction/completeness)?
3) How many bits are you, in your heart?
4) What's the worst thing you've ever spilt on a keyboard/controller?
5) What's the best video game based on a board game/RPG you've ever played?

Have fun!

Not only while I'm gaming, but anytime I'm on a computer. It is a mild compulsion I have. Changing it to drink coffee with artificial sweetener (or none at all) and diet soda was one of the most important steps on my diet.

It was an experiment I tried with zorazen and it worked so I did again a few times latter. Need some more time to do it more with old and new admins. But alas, with the tools changing with the redesign, I will have to start it from the beginning again.

Congratulations Sol!!! Excellent choice for VGGOTW!!! Hope you are enjoying your week.

Now for... some questions...

#1 Do you own any games that you have not yet played?
#a If so, which unplayed game are you most likely to play next?
#b Is there a game that is likely never to be played? If so, why?

#2 What one feature of the videogamegeek.com website would you most like to change (or add)? (this should be interesting as you have the capacity to do so!)

#3a What videogame universe would you most like to live in?
#3b and with which videogame character(s)?

#4 What one game from your early Atari or SEGA gaming days would you most like to see remade for one of the modern platforms?

Yes I have a few. Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity is next after I finish Skyrim and LA Noire. From the list of not getting played, a bunch of the The Humble Indie Bundle will probably receive a pass. Most of those I fired and said, meh!

I need to improve the tools used for the Wiki, so the walkthroughs can take off better. I know that going toe-to-toe with GameFaqs will be hard, but we should try.

Hmmmm tough choice. I'm always partial to the Suikoden universe, specially on the events surrounding Suikoden II. The Civilization IV Fall from Heaven mod is always amazing, and it would be a good place to be.

ToeJam & Earl. It received two versions after, both incredible crap. This is the best of the SEGA Genesis games for me.

No for Slick. Fyoosh for sure though, it has been left implicit already that they have done much more than kisses. All that snuggling around. Also, on this strip, there was a lot of kisses going on. Just none on screen.

Casters. If possible battle mages, if not cleric, otherwise pure mages. ON D2 for example I would always play as a Sorc.
