Welcome to my profile.

If a game of mine is listed as both "previously owned" and "for trade", I've put it in a box in storage.

I survived the Mountains of Madness!

Poll 85527 has been retired.

About my avatar: When I was in Paris in 2008, I was amused by the whimsical look of this statue holding a bouquet of purple flowers at the Père Lachaise cemetery. It marks the spot of Dominique Vivant, who became the first director of the Louvre. You can see the full sized image in my gallery.

About me: I have an MA in Liberal Studies. My heart is with the arts, especially theatre, opera, and music. I live in Vancouver, BC with my beautiful, brilliant and talented wife, smart, pretty and cool daughter, our two very large guinea pigs and two cats.

About my microbadges: I find microbadges good harmless fun. I'd put more games in there, but I think my ratings speak well about which games I'm a fan of so I'm preferentially spending bag on badges that are reflective of me rather than my gaming.

About my gaming preferences: My favorite games are wargames. As much as I do enjoy a broad spectrum of games, I like those elements of uncertainty that come with wargames.

My favorite game is Twilight Struggle. It embodies, for me, the perfect balance of strong theme, uncertainty, and fun.

A good game collection is a lot like a good wine cellar. The collection itself and the knowledge of the choices it presents provides its own joy.

I'm fortunate to have a regular gaming group. We get together at irregular intervals, but wargames are hitting the table and that's what counts. I also have a weekly RPG group, and when we don't have quorum or for a change of place like to play board games.

My "hot 10": my most played games in 2012.

My "top 10": my current favorites, in no particular order.

About my ratings: I don't like BGG's definitions. "Always want to play" can only ever be under the ideal circumstances for the game in question. To steal a great line from my friend Rusty (kuhrusty), "EastFront is one of my favorite games, but if we only have two hours, or if there are five of us, or you're three years old, I would rather play something else. I'm still calling that a 10, though, because under the right circumstances, I'm going to suggest it!"

So, when I rate a game, it goes roughly like this...

8-10: A great game I want to play often.
6-7: Average games I'm willing to play.
4-5: Sometimes ok games I need someone to persuade me to play.
2-3: Games I never want to play again.
1: The game equivalent of Plan 9 From Outer Space

I only rate in whole numbers, because I don't have the patience to decide if game A is 0.1 or 0.5 or some other fraction "better" or "worse" than game B. I also happily give out 10's and 1's to games I feel deserve them.

The Tao of Wargaming

1. Look for new games, and play the ones that sound interesting.
2. Replay the games you enjoy.
3. Don't let anyone tell you what to think.
4. Always speak authoritatively, even if you're not really sure what you're talking about.
5. Enjoy the repetition.
