In Japanese Ōkami means "great god", "great spirit", or "wolf". The kanji characters used for the games title mean "great deity" and are also used to write the full name of the Shinto sun goddess Amaterasu-ōmikami.
Ōkami was originally planned to be photo-realistic but was later changed to the sumi-e style. Dinosaurs were also considered as possible enemies but this was dropped in favor of demons.
The localization team had to translate 1500 pages of text to make sure it made sense in a "native check" due to lack of plurals in the Japanese language and the large number of characters and conditional conversations that the player could interact with.
