Issun is a poncle (sprite), the grandson of Ishaku, and the voice/partner of Ōkami Amaterasu. Issun is proud, stubborn, easy to anger, and quick to offer his opinions without restraint. He hates to be mistaken for a bug or taunted for his size and will quickly turn to confrontation, usually threatening to use his sword Denkomaru. On the flipside Issun has a strong love of treasure and pretty women, often cracking dirty jokes, becoming more willing to help them in their plight, and becoming more passive if they offend. Because of this Issun shares a shaky friendship with Sakuya, although in Ōkamiden he has taken to treating Sakuya as more of a ‘boss’ type figure.
Issun is quick to make enemies and slow to make friends which has resulted in many strained relationships. Amaterasu is his closest friend while Waka remains his arch-nemesis to whom he refers to as the "Half-Baked Prophet" and in turn is addressed as "My Little Bouncing Friend". The two share a mutual resentment and Issun’s frequent accusations of treachery and misdoings are taken in stride by Waka who turns them around or manages to exposes Issun’s own faults and misdeeds. Because of Kurow’s physical resemblance to Waka Issun kept his distance and although seemed to be friends with the poncle girl Mya was quick to turn on her. He also left his grandfather Ishaku on bad terms and has not forgiven him.
He introduces himself as a traveling artist from the land of Kamui even though he had sworn never to paint again after an intense disagreement or argument over an unmentioned matter with Ishaku and took off with Ishaku’s painting of Sakuya claiming it to be his own. Initially he joined Amaterasu with the intent to steal/learn all 13 Celestial Brush Techniques but inadvertently became the seventh Celestial Envoy. In Ōkamiden he meets up with and temporarily becomes Chibiterasu’s partner. He takes Chibiterasu with him to the Celestial Plain promising to bring Amaterasu back with him on his return to earth.
