Susano is a sake loving, lazy, and cowardly descendant of Nagi living in Kamiki village. He carries a wooden sword and is the self proclaimed "greatest warrior ever", regularly bragging about his ancestry. Although he is often found sleeping (claiming its meditation) and is irresponsible Susano is able to gather his courage and pull through when he is needed most. Susano could see Ōkami Amaterasu’s true form from the beginning and loves Kushi.
Doubting the legend of Nagi, Susano traveled to the Moon Cave where he removed the sword Tsukuyomi which broke Orochi’s seal setting him free. Susano attempted to hide and mistook Amaterasu’s aid for being mockery of the gods. Orochi clouded his mind with nightmares wanting a blood pact between the two of them. When Kushi was chosen as Orochi’s sacrifice Susano stood up to Orochi and slew the beast.
In Ōkamiden it is revealed that on his way to face Orochi, Susano found a nearly drowned boy in the ocean. He named the boy Kuni and raised him with Kushi as if he were his biological son. After Kuni leaves to search for his real parents Kushi reveals that she is pregnant with Susano’s child.
"The only pact I have is that of my bloodline. If it is my fate to fall battling evil, then so be it." -Susano
Susano’s character design was inspired by Popeye.
Susano’s character is based on the fictional character Susano-o who saved Kushinada-hime who was intended as a sacrifice to Yamata-no-Orochi by turning her into a comb which he hid in his own hair.
In Japanese mythology Izanagi and Izanami are the two gods who gave birth to Japan and many deities. After attempting to retrieve Izanami from Yomi he created Amaterasu, Susano, and Tsukuyomi by washing his left eye, right eye, and nose.
