User Summary

Shale is a gem covered dwarven golem and one of the last remaining. She was once a female dwarf called Shayle who was part of House of Cadash. One of the first volunteers to become a golem and the only female to do so. Once 10 feet tall Shale was shrunk by her master with a "chisel and a lot of nerve".

Like all golems Shale was seen as a mere object: lacking free will and emotion. The ‘Control Rod’ used to command her was for many years in the possession of a mage who performed dangerous experiments by inserting crystals into Shale for the purpose of using her as a battery of mana that could be tapped into when needed. This is likely what triggered Shale into killing her master and leaving him "with so many broken bones that he was barley recognizable", although Shale has no memories of the attack.

After the incident Shale was left paralyzed and stood in the town of Honnleath for 30 years until freed by the Grey Warden. By then the ‘control rod’ was no longer functional and Shale regained her free will. Over the years of standing in the town of Honnleath Shale grew to hate the villagers for dressing her in festive garb during holidays, urinating on and spreading bird seed around her inert body drawing her most hated enemies: birds.

Shale is proud to be a golem for the reasons of feeling immortal, lack of pain, the need to eat, sleep, or perform other "body functions". Resenting all living things particularly birds and mages Shale expresses a desire to crush them all stating that with such fragility "it’s a wonder they survive at all".

Shale refers to everyone as ‘it’ with the exception of Zevran whom she calls ‘Painted Elf’, Morrigan who’s called ‘Swamp Witch’, and Wynne whom she calls the ‘Fussy Mage’ and ‘Wise One’.

Character Quotes:

"The darkspawn are an evil that must be destroyed, it's true. Though not as evil as the birds... damnable feathered fiends!" -Shale

"Death to all pigeons!" -Shale

"Now, let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?" -Shale

"I see it found some augmentation crystals. I was not even aware it knew about them... well done! So? What does it think? They don't make me look any wider, do they? I find I am already too wide as it is." -Shale

"They should keep all flesh creatures in confinement, not just the mages." -Shale

Apparently roosting birds frequently ‘left their mark’ on Shale during her imprisonment.

On Soldier's Peak (after Levi has set up shop) the camp ravens slowly migrate towards Shale and begin to follow him around.

Originally her design called for her to be the same size as the other golems encountered during the game. The reason for the size reduction was that she couldn't fit through doors.

You can see a full-sized version of Shale during her nightmare in the Fade.

When your companions are wishing you luck before the final battle if Shale has not been chosen to join you her parting statement "Have fun storming the castle." is a quote from the film The Princess Bride from a scene just before the heroes invade a castle and win the day.

Shale was originally intended as part of the base game and not downloadable content. The golem was to be found in Redcliffe Village along with the Golem Control Rod in Wilhelm's Cottage.

In Dragon Age II Corff the Bartender in the Hanged Man indirectly mentions Shale when asked about recent news saying, "Apparently the pigeon population in Ferelden has taken a nose dive. Who would prey on those weak little birds?"

During the epilogue of Dragon Age II a picture of Shale chasing some chickens is present when Varric is flipping through Cassandra's book.
