User Summary

Elcor are massive, grey colored aliens that stand on four muscular legs. They are native to the high-gravity world Dekuuna which has led the Elcor to evolve heavy bodies and thick, tough skin. They are conservative, deliberate, and slow in their movement and actions, an evolved response to an environment where a fall can be lethal. Elcor lips are multiple vertical slats situated in what is normally the location of the mouth and these "lips" are capable of holding on to protruding objects like cigars with no effort. Elcor speech is heard by most species as a flat ponderous monotone. Among themselves, scent, extremely slight body movements, and subvocalized infrasound convey shades of meaning that other races do not pick up on or understand so the elcor go out of their way to prefix all their dialog with an emotive statement. They have highly-attuned olfactory senses.

Because of their size, need to roam, and evolution in the open air most elcor find the confines of space travel uncomfortable and may grow restless on long trips. Their conservative nature has led the elcor government to be extremely stable. Despite this, they are always welcoming to outsiders. Their culture is built on small, tight-knit groups, and being traditionally migratory in nature they travel between to capitals, one for the wet season and one for the dry season. Modern technology has rendered the tradition obsolete, though elcor still observe it.

Elcor are invested in entertainment and the arts with many creating masterful works or becoming actors. Cultural artifacts fascinate people enough to warrant archiving objects related to the topic. Despite the general tendency for stability and the benign, elcor do have outliers among their people with psychopathic tendencies that can crop up from time to time; an elcor serial killer once prowled the Citadel. Some elcor earn their keep as bouncers to established clubs or merchants in their own right.

The slow speed and immense size of the elcor makes them easy targets. Fortunately, their durable hide allows them to shrug off most incoming fire and elcor warriors don't carry small arms; their broad shoulders serve as a stable platform for the same size of weapons typically mounted on Alliance fighting vehicles. The elcor do not maintain a large fleet of military starships. They do have several cruisers and carriers at their disposal, though their real value is in troop transport.

Trivia:

- The line on an advert in Mass Effect 2 stating "you have not experienced Shakespeare until you have heard it in the voice of an elcor" pays homage to Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country where Chancellor Gorkon states that "you haven't experienced Shakespeare until you have have read it in the original Klingon."

- The elcor speech pattern is a subtle reference to HK-47 from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, in which dialogue is prefaced by a stated emotion or verbal style.

- The elcor won the "Best New Species of the Year" award from the official Xbox magazine.

- The political structure of the elcor was loosely inspired by the Talmudic scholarship of Judaism.

- The elcor were originally going to have mouths similar to those of humans and asari, but this was changed due to the extra work needed to lip sync their speech. Instead, elcor mouths were changed to their current state where a short animation could be used repetitively without it being noticeable.
