VGG Image Policy

Welcome

Welcome to the Video Game Geek (VGG), the area of Geekdo dedicated to Video Games. This manual will be dedicated on how to enter data into the system. All the conventions we chose and all the main cases. If you have any doubt about the process that is not covered here, please ask at the How to VGG forum.

Design Goals

The idea behind images in the VGG database is to allow users to clearly identify the game, and to pleasantly navigate the database. There are rules for the images to deal with two issues: the first is that the game galleries need to be useful, easy to navigate and not cluttered with many duplicate images. The second is to respect the rights of the intellectual property rights holders.

General Rules

These general rules apply no matter which gallery the image is been submitted:

  • YOU MAY NOT UPLOAD IMAGES FROM OTHER WEBSITES for now, this may change later with very strict rules;
  • We are not allowing explicit images for adult video games until we can implement some adult filter for the website;
  • You must own the image in some way or have permission to use it for this purpose. If it is a game cover or screenshot, it must be a scan of your own game cover or a screenshot of the same;
  • If the image is an original piece of artwork, you must have written permission of the intellectual property rights holder to upload it;
  • If your image is declined, seek out the reason and correct the problem. Do not try to upload again in the hopes it will get through geekmod;
  • Images must be in normal RGB format. CMYK isn't universally supported by all browsers yet and will be blocked by the upload system;
  • If you got written permission to use the image from the intellectual property rights holders, remember to add them on the 'Comment' area when uploading;
  • Animated images are not allowed;
  • Watermarked Images are not allowed;
  • Images must be cropped, correctly orientated and without glare;
  • Images outside the size guidelines should not be submitted and will be declined;
  • Images without captions should not be submitted and will be declined.
  • Since not all rules can be covered adequately, we reserve the right to judge any image to not be in the best interest of the VGG and remove it. This would be a very rare situation and we hope it never happens.
  • You are not allowed to link images from a personal gallery to a database entry.

Policy for Video Games

Guidelines for the Covers and Media Gallery

  • The Following images are allowed on this gallery
    • 1 (ONE) box cover shot per [release]
    • 1 (ONE) box back shot per [release]
    • 1 (ONE) physical mediabundle shot per [release] (should contain all disks, tapes, etc. that come with the game in one image)
  • Scan Resolution Limits: for front and back cover scans of all Video Games (i.e. the tangible products) the resolution must be:
    • Maximum scanned image size: 1400 x 1900 (reverse for horizontally formatted items).
    • Minimum scanned image size: 400 x 700 (reverse for horizontally formatted items).
  • Images outside of these size guidelines should not be submitted\approved;
  • For front and back cover scans, we prefer actual scans to pictures;
  • If a picture/photo (i.e. non scan) must be used, it should be no larger than the scanned resolution limits above;
  • All captions for Cover & Media Images must reference the release ; the release nickname is best
  • Images without captions will be declined.
  • If you have images for a release not yet in the database, we invite you to submit the release.

Guidelines for the Screenshots Gallery

  • The screenshot gallery should have at most 12 screenshots;
  • Each game entry should have only 1(ONE) screenshot for each type of screen it has. For example:
    • Combat Window;
    • Title Screen;
    • CGI Screen (a.k.a. cut scene);
    • Dialog Screen;
    • Etc...
  • For console or handheld titles, a good quality photograph from the TV or handheld screen is allowed as a screenshot, but it must meet all the other standards for submission;
  • You can upscale a screenshot of an older console to show more close to how we saw on the TV, give the resolution.
  • Screenshots limists applies for the game and not for each entry. If the difference on the screen among platforms is very different, you may submit a new set of screenshot per platform.
  • If you do that, use the note field to explain to the geekmodders why you are adding a similar screenshot.

Guidelines for the People Gallery

  • This gallery should contain photos of people that are related to this game;
  • Cosplays should not be uploaded to this gallery, but to the specific Character gallery;
  • There is no size limit for this gallery.

Guidelines for the Creative Gallery

  • The creative gallery should contain only creative images that apply to this video game;
  • Images related to specific products, should be uploaded to that product gallery;
  • If you have written permission, copy it on the Note field;
  • There is no size limit for this gallery.

Policy for Series, Franchises and Platforms

Guidelines for the Logo Gallery

  • The logo gallery should contain only images of the logos this item had. You can submit 1 (one) image for each version of the logo;
  • All the logos should come from materials you own. Scans of boxes, manuals, etc;
  • There is no size limit for this gallery;

Guidelines for the People Gallery

  • This gallery should contain photos where people are the main focus. It must apply to more than one item of this group;
  • Photos that apply to only one item of this group, should be updated under that item;
  • Creative material like caricature should not be uploaded here;
  • There is no size limit for this gallery.

Guidelines for the Creative Gallery

  • This gallery should contain artistic or creative images regarding more than one item of this group;
  • Images related to one item only, should be uploaded to that product gallery;
  • You must own the rights to this image, or have written permission of the rights holder to upload;
  • If you have written permission, copy it on the Note field;
  • There is no size limit for this gallery.

Policy for Characters

Guidelines for the Screenshots Gallery

  • The following are the limits on the number of screenshots for this gallery
    • 1 (ONE) screenshot of the character in play for each versions it has;
    • 1 (ONE) screenshot of the in game character portrait, if different, for each versions it has;
    • 1 (ONE) screenshot of the CGI rendition of the character for each versions it has;
  • If a character version has more than one color scheme, or a different set of "clothes", use only the default one;
  • There is no size limit for these images.

Guidelines for the Official Artwork Gallery

  • Only 1 (ONE) scan of an original artwork for each source (a manual is considered one source);
  • Scan Resolution Limits: for artwork scans

  • All the logos should come from materials you own for this company. Scans of boxes, manuals, etc;
  • There is no size limit for this gallery;

Guidelines for the People Gallery

  • This gallery should contain photos of members of this company;
  • Photos of specific members can be linked from that member gallery here;
  • Creative material like caricature should not be uploaded here;
  • There is no size limit for this gallery.

Guidelines for the Creative Gallery

  • The creative gallery should contain only creative images that apply to the company as a whole;
  • Images related to specific products, should be uploaded to that product gallery;
  • You must own the rights to this image, or have written permission of the rights holder to upload;
  • If you have written permission, copy it on the Note field;
  • There is no size limit for this gallery.

Policy for Video Games Releases

Guidelines for the Covers and Media Gallery
