Video Game Guide to Data Entry: Series and Franchises

This is the Data Entry Guide for Series and Franchises, the main guide with all the general info and some other things can be found at Video Game Guide to Data Entry

Create Series

A series is a group of game that are tightly connected by some of the following characteristics:

  • Name - The games have a common name and only change a number or subtitle (i.e. Mario party, Assassin's Creed, Prince of Persia, Final Fantasy)
  • Story - The story continues from one game to another. (i.e. Suikoden, God of War)
  • Mechanics - The games are tied in a line of similar games with different themes. (i.e. Mystery Dungeons)
  • Setting - All the games happens in the same worldsetting and the publisher regard them as a series (i.e. Ivalice Alliance)

The Create Series window

A series is created when two or more games are tied together by some of the above characteristics. One important thing about series is that all the games in it should be on the same genre, or in a few exceptions, you can see the evolution during the titles. For other cases, use a franchise.

Primary Name

Same as for the game entry, the name with which the game is best known. For foreign games, if there is a widely known English name, that name is preferred, otherwise use the native language name.

Add Videogame Franchise and Videogame

If this series is part of a Franchise (see below) that is part of the database, you can select it here already, even if that franchise is Pending approval. Same for videogame titles.

Description

All the descriptions must have an attribution. Descriptions from other sites, except those listed below, cannot be used. A description should give a good intro on what is the game and what it is about. Preferable, these sources should be used:

  • A Good User Summary - A good user summary will mention part of the defining characteristics of the game besides explaining some of the game play. On top of the text add '''User Summary'''
  • Publisher\Developer Website - On the top of the description write [http://link.to.article From the Publisher\Developer Website]
  • Game Manual\Game Box - On the top of the descriptions write, '''From the Game Manual\box'''
  • Wikipedia - ANYTHING taken from there must include a link back to Wikipedia (it is required by their license). This should be done using our wiki-formatting as: [http://www.wikipedia.com/SomeArticle From Wikipedia]

Create Franchise

A franchise is created when you have games of different genres tied together by name or universe. (For example: Halo 3 and Halo Wars are in the same 'universe' but otherwise unconnected) Generally, a franchise is needed in one of the following three situations:

  • To tie two or more games that have absolutely nothing in common game wise and aren't clearly a sequel one of the order but share a title or an universe (i.e.: Halo 3 and Halo Wars)
  • The franchise has a clearly defined series of games and one is released that is not on that sequence (i.e. Suikoden has the main series and an spin-off, Suikoden Tactics)
  • Two parallel series exist for the franchise (i.e. Street Fighter will have a few series under it so it deserves a franchise)

Basically we use a franchise to tie things that should be together but to which a series does not apply.

The Create Franchise Page

The franchise window has the same fields as the series one, please revert to it for a better explanation of each of those. The only big difference is that here you link which series already on the database, are part of the franchise.
