Random Ruminations

It seems to be part of my nature to reflect on all my experiences--even the hobby experiences many people consider trivial. And I reflect best when I'm typing. So, here are some of my thoughts on games and gaming. Enjoy them if you can, comment if you like.

My latest game purchase, Master of Orion - Conquer the Stars, has got me wondering about myself again. So here I go on yet another introspective ramble.

Not sure why it is, but I've never been able to start into a game without feeling at least a bit of trepidation. It's supposed to be fun, and I should be excited. And I am--but I'm also aware that it's going to be a challenge, and I wonder if I'm up for that.

So, last time I wrote about the six "wargamey" PC strategy games I keep installed and play as often as I can. Besides those, I have six other games installed--for variety's sake or just because they're good games I can't get enough of.

Reading what others write about video games, it's pretty clear to me that I'm in a small minority simply because I prefer strategy games, and turn-based games at that. Furthermore, I care nothing about economic games, political games, or anything else besides games of conquest. I'm an old wargamer who wants to continue playing wargames, but only solo on the PC. I'm not much good at them, but they're more psychologically rewarding to me than any other kind of game.

Yesterday I uninstalled all but 12 of the 27 games I'd had installed. It's my way of doing what board gamers call a purge or "culling the collection." It's often so tempting and easy to buy new games, but then we realize we don't have nearly enough time to play them, much as we might like to.

MOO is one of my most-played games and still one of the most satisfying. But why not MOO2? And why do I keep looking for good alternatives, like Age of Wonders and Dominions? And then why, even after finding these other highly satisfying games, do I keep coming back and playing MOO over and over again?

I was in the process of buying DROD: Gunthro and the Epic Blunder yesterday evening, when a sale on Icewind Dale II caught my eye. It had been on my wishlist, probably because I enjoyed playing the first game in that short series, but I didn't feel I had time for yet another RPG; I'm already playing one, and I have another on hold.

Life must have a lesson in store for me lately. I've run into no end of frustration--the kind that would have sent me into a rage not long ago. Now I'm just sighing and adjusting.

It started with my old friend Master of Orion, of all things. I play it when I want something very familiar--something I know how to play and feel in control of. On average level, I can win more often than not, sometimes too easily. But not lately. The last two games I played ended in disaster. All the AI players ganged up on me and defeated me politically before I was able to expand far enough to defy them

Very strange, at least to me: right now I could be downloading a free copy of Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, a highly regarded game, but I don't want it.

Last week, Epic Games was offering Civilization VI for free, and I created an account just to nab a copy of that game. And I'm grateful for the gift; I've been enjoying it.

Reflecting on my gaming behavior, as I always do, lately I've caught myself jumping from one game to another. I don't usually leave any half finished--I complete one and move on to another--but for a week or so, my normal desire to replay a game has been overpowered by a compulsion to do something with one of the games I feel I've neglected too long.
