There have been requests for new genres and we want your input:
Poll
Rail Shooter:
Rail Shooters follows a specific route, limiting the player's movement around the screen as they shoot targets. These games often feature an "into the screen" viewpoint, with which the action is seen from behind the player character.
Metroidvania:
Metroidvania or Castleroid is a portmanteau name of the games that inspired the genre.
Metroidvanias have interconnected maps with locked doors and/or other obstacles blocking access to some parts of the world map. Special items, tools, weapons, or abilities are used to gain access to restricted areas and may also be used to locate shortcuts and secret locations. The careful design of levels and character controls encourage exploration and experimentation, and returning to earlier parts of the game to progress is practically genre defining.
Hack and Slash:
This will be for the Musou/Musō (E.g. Dynasty Warriors) type of "hack & slash" and not the ARPG kind, which should already be covered by Action RPG.
Hack and Slash gameplay requires quick moves and devastating attacks to take out massive hoards of enemies relatively quickly. Swords or other melee weapons are typically used, but projectile based weapons may be present. Combat and violence is usually emphasized above all other game or plot mechanics. A dodge mechanic may not always be present, as the player is expected to repeatedly "hack away" at their opponents.

Image Policy Update
Concerns have been raised recently about the viability of the screenshot limit for game galleries. The image limit was first put in place back in 2010 and originally allowed for 7 screenshots at most. This was increased to 12 in 2011 and then to 24 in 2015. To bring VGG into line with the BGG and RPGG policies, the image limits have been removed entirely from the VGG image policy.
The reasons for the change are as follows:
• BGG and RPGG have never used limits in their rules.
• It is hard to keep track of the limit without manually counting each image. The image number displayed on a game gallery can not be used because it includes logos, creative works, promotional images, box art, media bundles, bug images, and so on.
• The limit does not account for things like good quality screenshots added to a game with bad tv camera screen-captures.
• The limit gives the impression that it is enforced by the system. Like everything in the image guidelines it relies entirely on the community's understanding (or interpretation) of the rules and a majority vote through the flawed system that is GeekMod.

As you all know we have been doing some community goals, in which we try to play games in different challenges and formats. As 2018 is drawing to a close we are close with a number of those goals but have not yet made them. An overview as where we stand:
Beat 1800 videogames
https://videogamegeek.com/geeklist/235210/videogames-beaten-...
At the moment we are only just above 1500 games beaten. But every game helps. Did you beat games but have not entered them, do it now!Play the top 201-300 games on the VGG ranking list
https://videogamegeek.com/geeklist/234718/community-goal-201...
Very close to this. 8 games are still on the list to get played, no need to beat them 5 hours of game time is more then enough:
206 / Call of Duty
218 / Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U - Cricky 1 hour (26th Dec)
231 / God of War (2005) - Taibi (possibly)
253 / Suikoden - Taibi (possibly)
254 / Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
259 / Battlefield 3
269 / Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations - Cricky 1 hour (26th Dec)
276 / Paper Mario - andrewhodkinson 3 hours (24th Dec)Play games on 5 different platforms
https://videogamegeek.com/geeklist/235508/community-goal-201...
We have 19 users at the moment, but we need 30 who have played on at least 5 platforms. So we are still looking for 11 users. Not yet on the list, go over there and do so now.Collectively play on 51 different platforms
https://videogamegeek.com/geeklist/235516/community-goal-201...?
45 platforms have been played on and logged this year. Please help us with the last 6!

This is just a quick notice about some of the events and activities taking place this month.
2017 VGG Multiplayer Event
One of the great things about video games is the ability to play with anyone anywhere, especially your fellow VGGers. So we are celebrating this in our yearly multiplayer event. What do you have to do? Just play games with other people and then tell us about it in the weekly geeklist or another topic. As it is summer we are going to extend this event until the 15th of august!
Main thread: 2017 VGG Multiplayer Event
There is a special microbadge for participants.
Frumpish's Fifth Annual Browser Game FLASH-O-RAMA!
During each of the four weeks of August, a new browser game entry will be added to the FLASH-O-RAMA GeekList. Play it and then post a screenshot of your highest score in the scoring thread. At the end of the week the person with the highest score will earn 4 points. The people with the second and third highest scores will earn 3 points and the people with the fourth, fifth and sixth highest scores will earn 2 points. All other entrants will earn 1 point.

If we run a character tournament this year will you participate?
Previous tournaments included the Tournament of Heroes (2012) and the Tournament of Villains (2016
).
Poll
If we host another character tournament what category or theme should we use?Poll
How the Character Tournament works:
1. A nomination thread is held in which everyone suggests characters.
2. Then a vote is used to narrow the nominations down to just 64 characters.
3. Each of the 64 characters is paired with an opponent. The winners are decided through voting.
4. The winners move onto the next round, of which there are six.
Everything is recorded using an elimination chart.

We have been mulling over the idea of adding Metroidvania and/or Dungeon Crawler as a genre(s) and would like your input:
Poll
EDIT: While were at it, I figured we should get the community's input on the Hack & Slash genre.Poll
Genre Definitions:
Dungeon Crawler:
A dungeon crawler has the player navigate a labyrinthine environment such as a dungeon while battling various monsters, disabling or avoiding traps and looting any treasure they may find. Dungeon crawlers are usually party based and typically feature a first person view window. They have traditionally lacked meaningful plot or logical consistency despite often being paired with the RPG or roguelike genre.
Endless procedurally generated dungeon terrain and randomly placed monsters and treasures are common. The 1980s may be seen as the "golden era" due to the simplistic graphic style and the need for repetitive tiles or similar-looking graphics. Some distinguish "dungeon crawlers" from rogue-likes and RPGs with stories and character-interaction, while others use the term to describe any game which features ample amounts of dungeon exploration.
Metroidvania:
Metroidvania or Castleroid is a portmanteau name of the games that inspired the genre. Metroidvania games generally feature a large interconnected world map the player can explore, though access to parts of the world is often limited by doors or other portals that can only be opened after the player has acquired special items, tools, weapons or abilities within the game. These can then be used to defeat more difficult enemies and for locating shortcuts and secret areas.
Metroidvania games include tighter integration of story and level design. Most of the time a Metroidvania game doesn't have discreet levels that you can't return to; returning to earlier parts of the game to progress is practically genre defining. The careful design of levels and character controls encourage exploration and experimentation.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metroidvania
Hack and Slash:
Hack and Slash, or hack and slay refers to game-play, typically with a sword or other melee weapon that requires quick moves and devastating attacks to take out massive hoards of enemies relatively quickly. Combat and violence is usually emphasized above all other game or plot mechanics. A dodge mechanic is not always present as the player is expected to repeatedly "hack away" at their opponents. The genre has it's origins in the pen-and-paper RPG Dungeon and Dragons.
