There have been requests for new genres and we want your input:
Poll
Rail Shooter:
Rail Shooters follows a specific route, limiting the player's movement around the screen as they shoot targets. These games often feature an "into the screen" viewpoint, with which the action is seen from behind the player character.
Metroidvania:
Metroidvania or Castleroid is a portmanteau name of the games that inspired the genre.
Metroidvanias have interconnected maps with locked doors and/or other obstacles blocking access to some parts of the world map. Special items, tools, weapons, or abilities are used to gain access to restricted areas and may also be used to locate shortcuts and secret locations. The careful design of levels and character controls encourage exploration and experimentation, and returning to earlier parts of the game to progress is practically genre defining.
Hack and Slash:
This will be for the Musou/Musō (E.g. Dynasty Warriors) type of "hack & slash" and not the ARPG kind, which should already be covered by Action RPG.
Hack and Slash gameplay requires quick moves and devastating attacks to take out massive hoards of enemies relatively quickly. Swords or other melee weapons are typically used, but projectile based weapons may be present. Combat and violence is usually emphasized above all other game or plot mechanics. A dodge mechanic may not always be present, as the player is expected to repeatedly "hack away" at their opponents.
