It was a very rough week between overtime at work, and other things going on. I did try to make relaxation a priority this weekend. Saturday I had a work friend over for some games, and then Sunday we had a rotating cast of friends and family show up and leave at various times for gaming and Tacos.

Just one game. My wife asked to play Lords of Waterdeep on Saturday night and we played a quick 2-player game. She has been asking to play this regularly since we got it a few months back (July, I think.)

It's quick, and for some reason it's more enjoyable than it ought to be. We bought a set of "DnDeeples" from BGG user relax, and they add to the experience.

October means getting ready for winter for the most part with weekends tied up with raking, mulching, picking up...good old New England fall activities. This did hit the table however and what fun it was. Played 3 games and if we weren't so beat would have played 3 more easily.

We had a bit of a gamesnight on friday, where all couples split up to either go get together for drinks or boardgames. Most of the men were in the drinking group, most of the women in the gaming group (because we are nerds).

We played a game of Star Wars Customizable Card Game until Maevre showed up - once again we couldn't finish it. Tegarend is doomed to replay the intro game of SW:CCG with me until the end of time. I like the game, though! CCG's are always a bucket of very expensive fun.

Maevre had brought a ton of games, but there were all playable with two. We're all coupled, so we can play two-player games any day of the week. So we started a game of Die Macher instead! Die Macher is a German game in German about German politics. It doesn't sound all that interesting but it was! It may have helped that we've had our own local elections recently an that the zingers from that event were still clear in our head.

External image

Die Macher by julia_nienaber, on Flickr

But the game itself was pretty good too - there was so much going on it was very hard for us to pick a strategy or see who was winning, but we still felt we had a lot of control about what was going on. We (the girls) were very surprised about how interesting it turned out to be - even the auctions that I usually hate were fun here.

And after a while the theme seemed to turn into simulation as all our party programmes became more and more alike to appeal to votes on the national level.

After a lot of flip-flopping, pandering to voters, bribing the media, taking bribes from lobbyists and diluting all our standpoints to a safe center view. I emerged victorious!

After that we played Among the Stars - a kind of 7 Wonders in Space. I think I prefer 7 wonders, but this was a nice light variant on the mechanisms.

A friend came over and we played a game of
Airlines Europe.

Then one game of High Bohn Plus

and then finally 2 games of Pandemic

In Pandemic it started well and then like always took a nasty turn and we all failed.

I went thrift store shopping this weekend and this was the only complete game that I picked up, while the other one I'm going to part out... We got home from the local, well half hour away, Goodwill store and started checking pieces to see if they were all there or not. And then we sat down for a quick game of Clue Jr. before heading off to bed. That was the only physical board game that we played this weekend. However we also had family time by geocaching, a hobby where we are the game pieces, in a high tech scavenger hunt.

Tried a four player game. There is a good game lurking here somewhere, but sadly this isn't it. The consensus was that the good components and interesting concept are marred by very poor game mechanics.

Doubt this will see any further play.

Friday
2x - Castles of Burgundy split 2x2p games with my wife
1x - Dominion 3p game with Base, Seaside

Saturday

Saturday I completed Tough Mudder KY with 7 friends in cold, slippery, wet clay conditions.

We had one guy who fell victim one hour in to the cold shakes that significantly slowed our team down, but we stuck together and it came and went as we worked our way through the 11 mile course and interesting challenges. We had a great time together.

We are all a little stiff, battered and bruised but generally feeling great the day after. We haven't ruled out doing another one (in milder conditions). In fact, we have a few friends considering joining us if we do.

Sunday
1x - Summoner Wars - won Benders vs Shadow Elves

My BIL and I finally got Summoner Wars back to the table after a bit of a drought. I sent a few waves of Commons that lured his Summoner out but was left sitting on little magic, a depleted draw pile, and three Champions in my hand at once. So it was time to go all in.

I discarded two Champions to make a decisive last ditch move to end it before my BIL (with a pile of Magic and lots of cards) could get away from me. It proved successful. Had I blown it he had two Wall event cards and was ready to retreat to the corner and block himself in while he planned to crush me.

meeple Keep playing...

Played 2 games of 4 players right in a row. I enjoyed this one quite a bit. Great looking game and components as well as some really cool mechanics. The individual changing rondels are slick.

Tigris & Euphrates With 4 players, it was great to get this favorite out. It never disappoints. Tho I have to complain that every stinking time I attack, the other guy always randomly has 3 to 4 of the color in question! *end whining*

For Sale Played 4 games of this right in a row to end the night. This game is amazing.

With a 2 months old kid at home, my playing time is much reduced now. Even though I was able to play a little 18XX game.

An OK experience, as the others were mostly new to the system, but was fun to watch their moves and see how much experience counts on these games.

We had a bunch of friends in town this weekend, all of whom are hot on Dominion. So, we played many, many games of Dominion with all expansions. I picked the cards in advance based on themes like Thanksgiving, Halloween, the election, Veterans' Day, etc. Everyone had a great time, and some have already asked me to set up another Dominion day.

Traded for a copy of AH Nexus Ops awhile back (before FFG decided to reprint it) and it has sat on my shelf.

As part of recovering from surgery this last Friday, I tried to convince my family to play a few games with me. You'd think they would give a guy a break considering the circumstances, but it was like pulling teeth to get anyone to play. Sigh.

With time on my hands, I sat down with the rules for Nexus Ops and decided to enroll my son to play. He had always liked the pieces (and who doesn't?), so I thought he'd bite. Sure enough, he did.

After struggling a little to understand the combat rules, we waded in. Immediately, I got the upper hand. After a few battles did not go his way and he lost the monolith and a rubium dragon, the boy announces, "I don't want to play this anymore."

Sigh II.

Sure, it was relatively minor surgery, but heck. Does a guy have to nearly die to get some game action around this household?

And how does one get a 12-year-old to stop bailing on games he is behind in? I keep thinking I've raised this boy right, but then he wants to quit any game he appears to be losing (except card games, go figure).

Ah, the challenges of modern parenting. shake

Anyway, given how simple Nexus Ops is and my own Eurogamer proclivities, the game has good depth and is one of the better light wargames I've encountered, with decent strategy and some interesting options for troop selection and movement. Plus, you've got to love the fluorescing pieces. (Where'd I leave my old black light from the '70s?)

Went to Maryland for the weekend to visit a good friend of my wife's, who happens to love board gaming, and I really wanted to play this new game that I just recently acquired in a trade.

I have the iOS version (which is amazing), and so I already knew exactly how to play and everything. We played three games of it over the weekend, and everybody loved it!! The best part was that all three of us each won a game! Loved it.

Lost Cities - Also played this game three times with my wife's friend. I could play this game all day. It's incredibly quick, light, and fun.

Flash Point: Fire Rescue - Got in two plays of this over the weekend. Once with the regular map, to introduce the wife's friend to it, then once she knew what she was doing, I opened up the new 2nd story expansion. It was pretty cool. The ladders and windows change things up a bit, and add a little more variety for when the base game gets a bit stale. Such a great game.

Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game - Got in one amazing play of this. Check out the session report I just wrote HERE to find out more about how awesome this one is.

If Wishes Were Fishes! - Brought this one along, and the wife and her friend HATED it! My wife had always enjoyed this one. She was even the one who told me to bring it! I think watching her friend struggle and then hate it, kind of swayed her into hating it too. I had a blast, and destroyed their not-into-it butts.

Escalation! - Great simple card game. Play a higher card (or cards) than the previous player, and the one with the least amount of cards at the end wins. My wife won this one, which was good because she was starting to get a bit discouraged.

Ubongo: Duel - Watched my wife and her friend play this one. This is possibly my wife's favorite game, and she was BARELY beaten out by her friend on the last puzzle! It was great to watch!

Such an awesome gaming weekend!!!

5 x Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game.
1 x Abaddon.
2 x Carcassonne.

Played two games of Carcassonne with my wife. She loves this game! Played with Carcassonne: Expansion 1 – Inns & Cathedrals plus Carcassonne: Expansion 2 – Traders & Builders expansions.

Then my buddy came over on Sunday and we tried to do some 1v1 games. Took out Star Wars. First game took 45 minutes including rules explanation. We ended up playing 5 games! After wards, we had dinner and played one more game of Abaddon before my buddy had to go home.

He enjoyed Star Wars a lot and said he's looking forward to coming back for more!

Friday
Lindy was almost desperate to play Clans again since we had played it twice during the week and I beat her both times. This was one of those games she usually beats me at so it hurt her vanity that I won twice in a row. Well, this time it was back to her winning. But it was close! We also have been enjoying Botswana a bit this week and so played that again. It is another good Knizia game after all.

Saturday
No games played. I had a funeral to attend.

Sunday
First off, LIndy and I played a game of Dungeon Twister: Prison. She won again. This is one of those I do not win often. Later on, Botswana hit the table again, and in the evening we played Nuns on the Run. I ran 2 novices while Lindy was the Abbess and Prioress. She captured me the third time 3 turns from the end.

6 games played this weekend.

Dominant Species is enough of a brain-burner that I only play it every month or two, but this weekend, it was time to break out that enormous box. The Birds player won by > 50 points, scoring nearly 100 points in the last turn alone! (36 points for Ice Age, 45 points for Survival, and then a Domination action). I managed to eke out a third place "victory" (out of four players). After having played this with three and with four, I think four is preferable. Playing two species apiece isn't that much fun - it's too complicated to think about.

Also, a quick Sunday night game of Innovation, in which my opponent nabbed the last achievement by using Bicycles to cycle her enormous score pile into her hand, and then using Suburbia to tuck them all, thus getting Monument. Clever play.

With the gamegroup:

Finally played my first game of Citadels, and 8 player game, I ended up 4th in a really close game. It's fun, simple, but since too many of us had never played, it went way too long. We followed this up with a 6 player game of Panic Station, where the Humans managed to burn the Hive after identifying two infected players (even mistakenly accusing a 3rd!)

With my Friday Night group:

One 5 player game of Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game, where I played The Rebels with another using 2 ships both. I used Wedge from the Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game – X-Wing Expansion Pack, my friend used a Y from Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game – Y-Wing Expansion Pack, for the win! Only one of our X-Wing went down. Against us, 4 ships as well. 2 Tie Advance from Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game – TIE Advanced Expansion Pack and two regular ties using some cards from Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game – TIE Fighter Expansion Pack. The Ion cannons are very powerful, and the EMpire learned that the hard way

We followed up with 5 games of Escape: The Curse of the Temple. First game using all treasure/curse room tiles, and we had a humiliating defeat, with only a handful of crystals. Second game we had an easy win going to the basic tiles, and 3rd game an easy win as well with about 3 cursed tiles. 4th game was a loss and 5th was a win, both using about 6 curse tiles.

We then ended the night with another "Escape", this time Survive: Escape from Atlantis!, 3 of us had not played before. I ended up winning in a tie, with 12 points out of 3 survuvors.

My friend Logan came over last night and he brought this. So Logan, my wife, and my two daughters and I played. I didn;t start out with much of a plan this game. My oldest daughter started out strong. She quickly built a building that made all her clients count as laborers, and then she was going to start vaulting as much as she could. We thought she was the one to beat, but out of no where Logan was able to build a few marble and stone buildings quickly in the end and took the win!

I love this game, 2 players to 5 I think it is just a blast to play!

The kids went off to get something to eat and watch their show, so then we brought this to the table. Figured the walking dead was going to be on in 2 hours so lets get in the mood for some zombies.

We played the scenario escape in a truck. I played the zombies, my wife played the Sheriff and Sally, Logan played the drifter, and Jenny. I knew I was in trouble when for my starting zombies I rolled a 3, then next turn all I need to roll is higher than a 3 for more zombies to spawn..... I roll snake eye! WHAT!!!!!!!!! Heroes found the keys early, and then it wasn;t long for the them to get the gas. On;y having 3 zombies the first couple turns really hurt my chances at doing much early so it was a pretty easy win for the heroes. LOVE this game tho. Always a lot of fun!

Two hands of Cthulhu Fluxx after dinner at friends' on Saturday, of which I won the first (via Penguin Therapy), and all five of us lost the second (via Inevitable Doom).

Board Game: Summoner Wars: Master Set

On Sunday morning I was delighted to lose a game of Summoner Wars to my daughter. I have been experimenting with different handicapping methods to give her a better shot against me, and playing a four-card hand seems to be the solution. But she played her Cloaks pretty flawlessly, and I made a couple of serious blunders with my Shadow Elves. The game ended with Vlox Backstabbing Selundar, just like it was supposed to.

Board Game: Chess

I paid $1 for a little 1942 pocket chess game with peg pieces at an estate sale in our neighborhood on Sunday afternoon. My daughter wanted to try it out with me. She's not as good at chess as she is at Summoner Wars. I spotted her my Q, QR, and KKt, but I still won.

Played a lot of Zombicide on Friday. My friend came over and we tried the 1-3 player mission a few times. All 3 times we lost before we could find the second survivor. Then when my neighbor and his brother got home, we went over there to try the mission where you need to open the bunker and get in. Failed on that one too.

My one friend left, so the three of us played a game of Yggdrasil on easy mode, and scraped by to win that one. It was a good boost after all the zombie crushing I got.

Three-Dragon Ante: Emperor's Gambit x2

A friend brought this over. It's not bad, but I would definitely house rule when you draw up to four cards to refill your hand. Rules state you flip a card on top of the draw deck to see what you have to pay. Card numbers can range from 1-13 so there can be a huge swing in cost. I can see paying two coins per card drawn. The numbers are about the same, but it would offer greater flexibility on managing your hand. Really feels like it needs an expansion to flesh out the game. I see there is an earlier version as well so that might help.

No Thanks! x3

After talking with one of the players about game types they like I decided to give this ago. They loved it. I'm now two-for-two in getting casual gamers to really like the game.

Summoner Wars

Finally got to play this with somebody who could be a regular partner. I gave them Phoenix Elves and I took the Shadow Elves. I did a really stupid move that could have cost me the game, but I survived and pulled out the win. The guy played well though and he's interested in trying out other factions.
