I just saw the new Total Recall and was pretty impressed by the whole world (the acting less so). It left me with a hunger for more of this gritty futuristic setting and conceptual writing it was based on.

So with this list I want to ask you what boardgame, rpg, videogame, novel, film, or other gave you the most satisfying scifi experience? I'm looking for the kind of gritty future earth stuff - no space operas or monsters. I guess you could call it cyberpunk - but I don't want to limit it to just that.

What board or card games best represent the scifi setting?

We've got all games in the Android setting of FF, including Android, Netrunner and the other one slips my mind.

Other than that I'm having a hard time thinking of anything else.

In the RPG domain, I'm completely lost.

Shadowrun I know, which has some hacker elements going on. But the world is a mashup with magic also playing a part.

Any good readings here?

The most recent find I came across. A 2012 text based adventure. No, that's no typo.

Other than that:
- Deus Ex series fits the bill perfectly.

As far as books go, the classics are best:
Philip K. Dick is lord and master of this domain, but I guess a few Gibson's would be in place as well as Neil Stephenson. Anything else?

And for movies, the one that brought me here in the first place:
Total Recall. Source Code was pretty nice as a concept, though the execution was lacking. The mother of the setting: Bladerunner.

Board Game: Time Gradient
Manifold: Time by Stephen Baxter was an incredibly satisfying book. I asked someone I worked with about it, and he said, "It's big. It's REALLY BIG!"

For the first 1/5 of the book, it was a bit slow, and I was trying to figure out what was going on, then all of a sudden--BAM! The pace picked up, I couldn't put it down read it in just a few days.

It's hard science fiction, but more than that...it's big...REALLY BIG!

This is when you start noticing the trend. I've got this thing for indie role playing games...love to read 'em. This game sounds incredibly interesting, and the scope (like the Baxter book above) is BIG. So big that you might be playing medieval scene one minute, then another scene in the big picture that takes place 5,000 years later. Again, a really cool ruleset, and hope I get to play sometime...hopefully at BGG.con.

I always thought the classic PC game Fallout had a pretty gritty feel to it.

This RPG is pretty cyberpunk.

Wink nudge

I cannot speak for any revisions that have been done in the last decade or so however.

The vast setting for Traveller provides an amazing variety of color at tech levels ranging from Stone Age all the way through alien super-science. Tons of published adventures and settings books provide amazing variety. It's an old game, so the computer technology is kinda lame, but there's something for everyone here.

The Firefly universe isn't quite cyberpunk, but it's certainly gritty, and evocative. There's a Firefly RPG that looks pretty neat.

A fairly recent (2006?) sci-ci film that really engaged me was "Children of Men." It is not cyberpunk by any means, but does such a good job of a near future dystopia without the space opera.
