Had to work again this weekend, so I didn't have a ton of time to game, but I plan on making up for it this four day weekend!
Friday night I went over to a friends for AGOT, and then we wrapped up with a tight three player game of Sentinels. we lost against Grand Warlord Voss, after tenuously hanging on for half the game with sub 10 HP with everyone.

2012-11-16
A Game of Thrones
Sentinels of the Multiverse

2012-11-17 - It was our friend Sara's, and almost our friend Jason's (her boyfriend) birthday, so we had them over for Taco Rice, games and drinks.
Bang!
Flash Point: Fire Rescue
Fast Flowing Forest Fellers

2012-11-18
Dominion - Jamie and I haven't played this in months. It was an exceptionally tight game, with her coming out ahead by a nose.

Only got a couple solo games of Upper Deck's Marvel Legendary in this weekend.

The solo game seems like it's a bit easy(won both games) and while it is fun, I can't wait to give this a run in a full 5 player game where we are working together to try to win. Really simple and fun deck building game, that folks say is along the lines of Ascension: Deckbuilding Game, which I own and ashamedly haven't played yet.

I was one of the doubters about this game, the re-using of artwork bothered me a bit, but once I got my hands on the game and actually got to play it, I am glad I got it.

Thinking about hosting a game night this weekend and just playing card games, I think I have enough that I can keep us busy for a few hours.

Busted this out at my war game club this weekend.

We played the first two scenarios, Fat Lipki and Hedgerows & Hand Grenades. Germans won the first, Allies the second.

This was my first time playing Combat Commander, and I'm very impressed. Easy to learn, but still plenty of strategic depth. Very fast, very chaotic - both good qualities in a squad-level game.

It was an ebb tide for gaming this weekend, as a houseguest, a speaking engagement, and transit difficulties complicated my schedule.

I did get in two three-handed games of Pharaoh, both of which were won by the new player, an old grad school colleague of mine. He was favorably impressed with Looney Pyramids.

Board Game: Caldera

In other Pyramid developments, I had received my new Treehouse set (in the green pyramidal bag) this week, which got me the sixth and final rainbow stash that I needed in order to play Caldera. My daughter (an experienced Volcano player) beat me in our very first game. I did like the victory condition and the Power Play rule, but it seemed like the win might have been a function of first-move advantage, because both of us were able to power through quite consistently toward the required three trios. I'll have to experiment with defensive play in future sessions.

We didn't play our usual Saturday lunch games of Tic Tac Doh! because I had thrown the 'mids into the cool new Treehouse bag, but accidentally left one of the larges at home.

Board Game: Summoner Wars: Vanguards Faction Deck

We played only one game of Summoner Wars. Reinforced Benders came on strong with two Magic Drains in the first four turns, causing a wailing and gnashing of teeth among the Vanguards. In the end, though, Stalwart Archers and Guardian Knights were able to hold the line against a deluge of Deceivers, and the Archangel flew deep into the Bender territory to defeat Tacullu (with a little Stalwart Archer backup).

Very light gaming for me.

With my game group I played Level 7 [Escape], a 4 player game trying the 3rd level. We all managed to escape, but ine thing is for sure, I didn't enjoy it much. The game stalled, none of us had much of a good time, it was my 4th game playing it, I'll likely try it solo once before I decide if I give up on it.

We followed that up with a 6 player game of Escape: The Curse of the Temple, using only base tiles, but playing with 4 rookies and someone who had only tried it once. We almost made it, 4 of us escaped, the other 2 couldn't, and we lost. It's very chaotic and fun with 6 people!

On Sunday I gave it a shot playing solo with 6 curse/treasure tiles for a win, and followed up wither another win using all 13 curse/treasure tiles. It was fun as well.

A very late running gig on Friday night washed out my plans for Saturday gaming.

Sunday saw a lot of work done on my Battlelore variant. It's probably a bit much to call it a Battlelore variant now to be honest as it has morphed a long way from the base game.

I love Battlelore - activating units by cards allows for a decent solitaire game - but I had played all the scenarios several times and wanted something more. I wasn't happy with the direction taken by the expansions either. I've added numerous other armies and sketched out a campaign system.

The rules have been through three iterations now. The first rule set was very close to Battlelore. Due to my inability to leave things alone, the second rule set dropped in the combat rules from Hordes of the Things. Not completely satisfied with that, the third and most recent iteration of the rules is poised between the previous two versions, and seems to provide the flexibility I'm looking for. Lots of playtesting on paper has been done and the results look reasonable - yes, that unit of peasants could take out that dragon, 1 in 1,679,616 times!

Sunday was spent tidying up the rules and army lists and completing the first full game with the new rules: Orcs vs Elves. I controlled the Orcs, and won a closely contested battle which nearly swung away from me when that bloody Ent tore bloody great holes in my line! Lots more playtesting to be done but I'm very pleased with the results thus far.

Also had an interesting idea for the campaign system - a re-themed fantasy version of Eclipse, with Mana instead of Science as a resource, using hexes from Mighty Empires. Hmmm...

Friday
1x - Agricola
1x - Eclipse

My oldest daughter wanted to take a break from homework and surprisingly asked me if I was interested in playing a game of Agricola. Sure! It has been a while since my oldest wanted to do anything with me, let alone play a game. Things were close the first few rounds, but for some odd reason she did not expand her rooms the entire game which limited her ability to grow her family. She realized this error about mid game, so I expect a rematch at some point which is great.

My hope is that when the kids get some time off from school at Christmas that we can play some more games together. We always have fun when we do.

From gallery of bkunes

Earlier in the week my wife and I played a 2p game of Eclipse and she beat me which she obviously felt good about to the point that she said "Leave it out. Let's play it again before putting it away." So Friday we were able to play another game. I won this time with strong tech and an overwhelming swarm of ships that pinched the outer edges of the known galaxy.

Hopefully she found the game more approachable and we can get it to the table more often... with a few others included would be ideal.

Saturday
1x - Apples to Apples Junior

My youngest and I sat down to consider a few games for our annual collaborative pick for the family to open at Christmas. Consequently, she got in the mood for a game. She offered up Killer Bunnies or Apples to Apples. My wife and I opted for the latter while my oldest passed. We tried the Apple Turnover variant (treat green cards like red, and red like green). We played to seven points with my daughter winning big.

Sunday
1x - Alhambra

A couple weeks ago my wife picked up an expansion for Alhambra, a game we borrowed once and really enjoyed. She also got a 50th Anniversary edition of Diplomacy. The problem with Diplomacy is that it is a 6 hr game. Fortunately our friend we borrowed Alhambra from was interested in it and we agreed to trade. My wife now gets a game she likes and my friend gets to try a game he's always wanted to play (he is going to try and figure out a way to play by email with a bunch of us).

I read the rules for our box of expansions, but opted to play the base game first to refresh our memory of the rules and basic game play. I trailed the entire game yet managed to gradually close the gap down passing my wife in the final scoring by two points with a 23 bonus for continuous walls to her 12.

meeple Keep playing...

Went to my local board game cafe on Saturday and tried Sewer Pirats, Timeline: Inventions, and Timeline: Discoveries with my husband, daughter, and son-in-law.

Board Game: Timeline: Inventions

Board Game: Timeline: Discoveries

Timeline is such a simple idea for a game but quite engrossing from a trivia point of view. We all seemed to enjoy the Inventions version better than Discoveries. I also really enjoyed Sewer Pirats and picked up a copy despite some pieces being cockroach miniatures. My daughter suggested that I paint the cockroaches in my copy bright, cutesy colours to get rid of the ick factor for me. My husband didn't enjoy it as much as I did, so here's hoping I can get him back down into the sewers sometime soon.

Board Game: Super Munchkin

After the cafe we came home and my daughter and son-in-law taught me how to play Munchkin with the Super Munchkin set (not my husband's kind of game for a couple of reasons and he was out at a hockey game). Once I got the hang of it, I really enjoyed it. I can definitely see why some people love it and others hate it.

After that, we tried a card game my son-in-law had picked up called Crash (can't find it on this site). It involved running a bank and its most interesting feature for me was that you were allowed to embezzle funds from your hand into your personal fortune as long you could sneak the card out and hide it without anyone catching you.

Board Game: Carcassonne

On Sunday, pulled out Carcassonne for the first time in quite a while and had a game with my husband. He won, but it was close.

We invited some gaming friends over for the weekend, and had a full weekend of gaming - starting Friday lunchtime and continuing until Sunday evening, starting at 8am and finishing near midnight each night. We'd bought a few new games - Seasons, Fleet and Tzolk'in - and one of our guests had bought Keyflower, so we had several new games to try, as well as some new expansions. The surprise hit of the weekend for one of our guests was The City though - I hadn't realised we'd acquired it since he last visited, and he was totally wowed by it! He played it at least six times on the first day, and several more times over the rest of the weekend!

We also tried out our newly acquired Ravenloft (I've played it before, but not my own copy) - and had a complete disaster of a game! I nearly died before my second turn, and definitely died before my third - before I had my fourth, all 4 players were lying down, although we had just managed to explore enough to find the place we were looking for. I'm not sure if this was due to bad shuffling of the encounter deck by me, or we were just really unlucky, but the encounters were really terrible, and we never got enough chance to build up experience to counter them!!

= 2 Plays

Got to play this using the roles and special action cards from the Pandemic: On the Brink expansion. On Sunday I taught this game to my nephew Ethan, and together with my Shawn we had a 3P easy mode game. Despite the new roles we drew classic ones (except Shawn, who always plays the Medic) and Ethan was the Ops expert and me the Scientist. Despite the easy mode the deck ran out before Ethan could cash in the 5 black cards to find the last cure, and we lose!

Earlier in the week me and Shawn had a 2P game. He was the Medic and I was the Troubleshooter, and we JUST barely found the last cure before the deck ran out (4 cards remaining!)

The next step is to increase the difficulty rating to normal!

Board Game: Morels
= 2 Plays

Played this Saturday with Shawn in the house, with me winning big 46-18.

My wife Betty also requested a game Friday, and this was tightly contested and despite a huge 25 point cider-flavored Chanterelle dish from Betty, I still managed to just outdo her with a score of 51-49!

Board Game: Stone Age
= 1 Play

Shawn managed to convince Betty to play this with us on Sunday, and this is the first time we got to try the Stone Age: The Expansion expansion. The extra symbols proved critical as Betty absolutely creamed us, as she got 188 bonus points from the cards (all 9 symbols collected!) and had a HUGE score of 276 versus my 194 (I focused a lot on trading) and Shawn's 130!

Board Game: Small World
= 1 Play

Got in a 2P game with Ethan after our play of Pandemic Sunday morning, and Ethan's good play of spreading out with Amazons, Ghouls, and Dwarves outdid my use of Tritons, Wizards, and Kobolds. Etha wins 111-94

Board Game: Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small
= 1 Play

Had a nice game with Shawn Saturday in a coffee shop in a mall while waiting for my wife to finish shopping. Shawn experimented with the storage building and got 13 points from it, but he didn't get enough animals and I win 41-31.

Board Game: The Castles of Burgundy
= 1 Play

Managed to visit the FLGS early Saturday morning, and got a 2P game versus Julie. She did a great job in filling out her board and overcame my shipping strategy to win 228-204.

Board Game: Puerto Rico
= 1 Play

The CoB game was immediately followed by a game of this classic, this time with both Julie and Vangie. This was the first time I used buildings from the Puerto Rico: Expansion I – New Buildings (the library and the statue). Vangie had a building strategy going and together with good bonuses from 2 of the 10 cost buildings overcame Julie's shipping strategy (36 points from shipping!) and my balanced approach to win 56 to Julie's 49 to my 46.

Board Game: Super Dungeon Explore
= 1 Play

My son Sherwin (17 yrs old) finally managed to get his hi school buddies to come over and thus I managed to bring this out again. As they were 6 guys I let them use 6 heroes but used the 4P variant rule where I spawn 5 skulls worth per spawn point instead of 4. I kept the pressure on and even managed to kill a couple of heroes, but they were resurrected and finally defeated Starfire after wiping out all the spawn points.

Other games played during the week:

Not so much as I had an official business trip at the start of the week, but I did manage to visit the FLGS thursday and got in a game of:

Board Game: Ticket to Ride: Europe
= 1 Play

4P game with the gals. I manage to complete my 21 point ticket and thus I won with a score of 123 vs Julie's 116, Janine's 101, and Vangie's 95.

Lots of games this weekend. Friday night, a friend had a group of s over to play game since another friend of ours was coming into town for the week. Before everyone got there, four of us played a quick game of Hanabi. We got a score of 19. Unfortunately I threw out a 5 early since we needed a clue, and I picked the one card out of my hand that we needed to keep.

Then the four of us played a game of Power Grid: The First Sparks. I did alright and got second place, but being towards the front in the turn order did not get me a lot of food, since another player was hogging most of the mammoths (he won), and someone else was wiping out a bunch of fish before I got there. It was tough.

During the game, everyone else arrived, so we split into two groups. I played a game of Defenders of the Realm with three others while the other five played Legendary. We came close to losing a bunch of times, but acquired some well-timed special cards that helped us stave off defeat and defeat the generals.

Both games ended around the same time, some of the players played D-Day Dice, and I played a game of Isla Dorada with three others. Things went right for me this time, I was able to finish my destiny, get all my treasures, and avoided my curse to win it.

It was getting late, and a bunch of people left, so four of us remaining finished the night with a game of For The Win.

Saturday was the monthly meetup which I showed up late to, thanks to some toilet problems. But I fixed it, and headed over and still got in a bunch of games in the 12 hours I was there. When I arrived, three others were looking for a game, and we played a game of Carcassonne with Inns & Cathedrals. I thought a huge city was not going to get completed, and I jumped on the fields that another player was taking, and I would have won, but the city was completed within the last few turns, and it gave the player whose farms I joined enough points to win it.

The four of us recruited another player, and we all played Last Will for the first time, which was a lot of fun. Three of us went bankrupt on the final turn, with two players having 16 pounds in debt, and I only had 8 in debt.

After that game, I joined up with some of my friends for a 5 player game of Navegador. It was a tough one, and I ended up taking second by only 3 points.

Then four of us went to play Ticket to Ride with the Team Asia map, and recruited 2 others for a full set of three teams. My team was behind the whole game from placing trains, but our tickets were long routes worth a lot of points, so we thought we would have it. Unfortunately, at the end, we got last, 5 points behind the leader, with second place only losing by a single point. It had to be the closest game I ever saw of TtR.

Then the 6 of us played a game of Taluva, playing it in teams of 2 that sat across from one another. My team was close, but couldn't finish it out before another team used up two sets of structures and won it.

It was starting to get late and players left, so I taught two other players For The Win, and ended up taking them both. Then we played a game of Torres, using the non-random card variant where we start with all 10 cards. The special scoring card gave us 40 points at the end if each of our knights were on a different level. It was tough to do, but two of us succeeded and I ended up winning the game by 6 points.

Four of us were left at the end of the night out of the initial 30+ that started out the day. One player taught us how to play Bullenparty, which I won by a single point.

When to my parent's house on Sunday, and played my mom and brother in a game of Launch Pad that I dominated in. We all got the employees needed early, but my card draws were much better, so I got out more rockets, and destroyed theirs.

Then I played my mom in a one on one game of Ticket to Ride with the Legendary Asia map. She took lots of mountain routes and ran out of trains quickly. She drew extra tickets twice during the game, and I only drew them once, and was unable to complete one at the end, which gave her the win 120-92.

Quite a game filled weekend like I hadn't had in a long time. Good stuff!

Friday Evening:
Played a solo version of Dungeons & Dragons: The Legend of Drizzt Board Game using 2 characters against the dragon (Shimmergloom? 3rd senario... I think) & won that.

Saturday Evening:
We had our monthly boardgame night.
Started out the evening with a couple of games of The Resistance. The first game the spys won; the second game was won by the resistance (7 & 8 player games).

The highlight of the evening for me was a 5-hour, 4-player game of Mage Knight Board Game. I recently received this game as a gift and had played 2 solo games prior to now. The other 3 players had never played before. I started teaching the game around 7:00pm and we were playing soon after that. After what seemed like about 1 hour, I looked at the clock and it was past 11:00pm. So much fun!!

Board Game: Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island
Gave this a shot over the weekend. It took us a while to learn the rules. The rulebook is full of mistakes and bad English, though sometimes it's just plain funny. We played the intro scenario a number of times, and only won it when using a handicap (the dog). I am happy that it was tough, although the exorcism scenario that we tried seemed solvable, so we'll see how future plays go. For now, it's a nice meaty co-op game with replayability and fun risk-taking decisions.

We also played this 3 player. There were some fun new chips in our game although the characters we drew seemed a little uneven. One player could give everyone wounds. Mine always gave me a benefit while also benefitting the other players, including by letting them get rid of a wound, so that was kind of off. I like the new rules for attacking whomever you want, BUT it does make the game longer. It is no longer of filler length when played with 3.

I played a 100 point game with some friends on Saturday, 3 who have played before and 2 newb's. It was pretty close actually, the Rebels won with only 1 Y-wing left that had 2 hull. The new players ended up hitting a few asteroids along the way, but it was pretty fun all around.

After that we all sat down for a 6 player game of Rex: Final Days of an Empire. I was Jol-Nar and quickly allied with Letnev and Xxcha. Not the best combo as we had a hard time getting influence. It was only with the Letnev's traitor cards coming into play in nearly every battle that allowed us to capture the 5th fortress in turn 7. BUT - Letnev pulled out his secret victory condition of having the most troops in the Galactic Senate at the end. (It also helped that the 2 newb's were playing Sol and Lazax devil )

For the People- Played this one for the second time. Wow there is a lot to this game. I love the nuances in it and can't wait to get it to the table again. Quickly moving into my top ten games.

Paris Connection- A quick four player game of this. First time I played it. It was OK nothing special.

Article 27: The UN Security Council Game- Another first. i liked this one but I for the time and type of game I would rather play Intrique.

Smash Up- Also a first time played. Kinda fun but a little long for what it is.
