I apparently had a rough Monday, and did not get the lists up!

I only got to play one board game this weekend, which was a horribly drunken game of King of Tokyo. I also played Don't throw up all over my wife's van game, which I ended up losing.

Sunday I played a bit of Dungeon Defenders with my Son, and a bit of Jak and Daxter, because I picked up the trilogy version on the PSN market.

Not much gaming this past weekend. Went to my wife's work Christmas party on Saturday. Once there was just us like-minded folks left, we played some Cards Against Humanity. It was a hit as always, with some of them deciding to buy the game afterward. I should buy some stock in CAH, every time I introduce new players, someone ends up buying it.

Sunday, played a game of At the Gates of Loyang with my wife. After a rocky start, I was just two coins short of getting to 19 for the win. I think it's the best score I've ever gotten.

Haven't been able to board game as much since moving to Montreal this past August. Partially because I don't know as many people here, and partially because my wife no longer works nights and weekends.

But I did convince her to play Le Havre: The Inland Port, which we both enjoyed (I love regular Le Havre, she despises it). From the previews I didn't think it would be as good as it is. I particularly like the spatial puzzle aspect of managing goods in your warehouse.

We also tried out Agricola: ACBS with the new expansion, and both felt that it improved the base game noticeably. We've played the base game enough that it was starting to feel samey, and this expansion adds an element I find crucial in Le Havre and Agricola: randomness in the starting conditions. Highly recommended.

Lastly I played a very interesting game of 1830 that saw a few company dumps and lots of stock trashing. Scores were ~8800, ~7200, ~5400, ~4200, with me coming in second, which I was pretty happy about.

Chicago Express, Oltre Mare and Keyflower were all new to me.

Chicago Express impressed me, great game played with great company, can't go wrong.

I have not played many trading games, so the trading started slow in Oltre Mare and then picked up, I wondered about playing with 4 (we were playing with three), maybe more trading would happen earlier and more often as more cards were out and you would think twice about waiting to draw the next turn.

Keyflower seemed okay, I would play again but it did not jump out at me as the other two did.

Board Game: The Castles of Burgundy

Friday
1x - Castles of Burgundy

Saturday
2x - Castles of Burgundy

It was a lets-play-Castles-with-the-correct-turn-rules weekend. Our first 33 plays of this game we played with player taking one action with their dice in player order and repeat. After learning that was incorrect we played a few games this weekend correctly with the only real significant changes being quicker games and decisions are more combo based.

I suspect this will be a light gaming week as I am heading north to spend some quality time with my mom and and help them out. My dad and I might get in a couple of games of M44 if time and energy permits.

meeple Keep playing...

We're not Jewish, just festivally promiscuous. My daughter insisted on a game of dreidel Friday, and it was a fitting way to kick off the sort of light gaming that pervaded the weekend. She rolled gimels like nobody's business.

Board Game: Tic Tac Doh!

We had our usual Components: Looney Pyramid Games games over Saturday lunch, with some Tic Tac Doh! that she dominated, but also our first game of Treehouse in what seems like ages. I won Treehouse.
Board Game: Treehouse

On Sunday evening, we played some Summoner Wars with our two newest factions, base decks only:

Board Game: Summoner Wars: Vanguards Faction Deck
Board Game: Summoner Wars: Jungle Elves Faction Deck

The game had a strong opening for the Jungle Elves, who drew the first summoner blood by sending in the starting Lioneer with a Chant of Negation to get past the Guardian Knights. Vanguards had a pretty devastating play of Holy Judgment (three Priests attacking various targets including Abua Shi), and after that, the tide turned ineluctably against the elves.

We wrapped up the weekend with a couple of quick games of Pharaoh.

Finally got to try out Galaxy Trucker, a game that's been on my short list for quite a while. It was a lot of fun - although it seemed pretty random at the time, the other players were able to build consistently better ships than I was, so I guess I'm just not very good at this one.

Tried to sell some members of our local game group on Android: Netrunner. This is a hard game to teach, and I don't think I really hooked them. I'll have to work harder on figuring out how to make this game "pop" on the first play through.

Introduced a friend to Agricola. This is a game that I wish I could get to the table more - I think it would be worth it to try to get good at it, but I only manage to play it every month or two. Anyway, he enjoyed it (the family version) despite losing pretty badly, so that's promising.

Finished a long-running game of 1989: Dawn of Freedom - as the Democrats, I was holding my own into the Late Year, and then everything just fell apart. Moral of the story - never get complacent. Even if you dominate East Germany with the Monday Demonstrations, a dedicated Communist player can while it back, bit by bit.

Started up my new Dogs in the Vineyard campaign on Sunday. What a brilliant, brilliant game. All the players seemed to enjoy themselves, and though there were the expected hiccups in our play due to limited rules comprehension, I still managed to put together a very satisfying town, with some interesting conflicts.

Good weekend.

Game night with a couple of relative newbies, so we stuck to lighter, gateway type games.

Kingdoms 3 player. I won the first two rounds and so had a big lead going into the final round. Of course this was a recipe for disaster, as I tried to play conservatively and was the target for bashing by the other two and ended up coming in last.

Small World 2 player. I tend to find this game kind of brainless other than the role selection, but this play showed me there is more to it than I might have thought.

Lords of Waterdeep 5 player. It was funny to watch the people who got saddled with mandatory quests: the guy who always wins, and father and son vindictively bashing each other, while I piled up the points and ran away with the win.

7 Wonders X2 5 player. A new player won the first game and tied for most points the second game. I was sitting next to him, so I guess I should have been paying more attention.

We were mostly busy with househunting and going out last week, but we did manage to play our first game of Innovation. The first play went pretty much as Quinns describes here. Every once in a while we looked at our newest card and went "And I can do that twice per turn for the rest of the game? That can't be right? right??" only to have that particular engine fall apart two turns later and us having to go hunt for a new one.

Quite nice! I love card games.

I received my Kickstarter package of Agents of SMERSH last Thursday and initiated a frantic search for players that evening. Muddled through the less than stellar rulebook, but I had a good time. Friday night CABS meeting, and Smersh was the hot game. I got in two more plays (winning one finally on the third attempt).

Highly entertaining game that I'm looking to playing again and again until I wear the Book of Encounters out.

In other news...I also got in another league game of 1st & Goal, managing a fairly easy win where the dice meant mostly my way.

I also got in my first play of Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar. A fellow CABbie was one of the BGG contest winners and was kind enough to bring it along and teach it. Lovely game in every way, added to my Wishlist. I expect this to be on many game of the year lists.

Not many games, but all of them highly entertaining.

Friday Night: A 2 player game of The Manhattan Project. I am really happy with how well this game plays with 2. My wife likes it so this will see a lot more play in my house.

Saturday: Went to my FLGS for open game day and played:

Innovation one two player game. I lost. Bringing my losing streak in Inno to something like 6 or so games. shake

Caylus We were joined by a third player and after discussing the available games, we settled on Caylus, which I have not played in about two years. Such a great game. I tried a new (to me) strat going for the building track on the favor box (I usually concentrate on money and VP's) and hit a personal best high score.

Went home and got ready to host a 4 player game of drunken Eclipse. Yes, several of us were drinking heavily (and I paid for it in the AM). My buddy to my right drew the +3 Computer tile in the first round, armed it on his cruisers and ruthlessly pummelled me with it for the rest of the game. Try as I might, nothing I could do could stop his advances. I am cooling on Eclipse quickly after seeing this happen a couple times. A couple lucky tile flips in the first 30 minutes too often determine the outcome of this 3+ hour game. This bums me out considerably. Especially considering everyone else in my group still wants to play Eclipse. yuk

Not during the weekend, but last night (Tuesday) I had a 4 player game of Power Grid in which I built out from 11 to 17 cities in the final turn, powering 16 cities and winning on the tie breaker by 14 elektro. What a finish no one (even me) saw coming.

Archipelago

The more I play Archipelago, the more I want to play Archipelago. Becoming one of my overall favorites.

Star Trek: Fleet Captains

A three player game with the Star Trek: Fleet Captains – Romulan Empire expansion. Just an ok experience. Went through a lengthy rules explanation, only to have the game end fairly early and anti-climatically.

In preparation to watch the new movie coming out this week, I played a couple of games of LOTR: LCG Hobbit expansion. We died horribly against Tom Bert and William despite the heroic efforts of Gandalf, Bilbo and the gang of Dwarves. We were using a Spirit and Leadership decks and simply could not compete with the 3 Trolls threat (Troll Camp x2 is murderous) and attacks.

AND

Board Game: Fleet

Played first three games of SHCD (3P Cooperatively). We got quite good at it, even beating Sherlock himself (scoring over 100 points) in our last game. This is definitely a new favorite, though slightly worried about what to do once all ten cases are solved...

Played two 3P games of Fleet. Very tight, fast game. Can definitely see this hit the table frequently solely based upon the deep decisions in such a fast-paced game.

The main event for the week was Saturday as I had some games at my FLGS before I attended the Christmas party of my 40K gaming group Team Eye of Terror (EYOT for short!).

Board Game: Eclipse
= 1 Play
The day started with me having another 3P game with Kent and Keith at the FLGS. We decided to try out the alien races for the first time, and I used Draco while Kent used the Eridani and Keith used Orion. The game was kind of weird as less exploration was done in favour of research , upgrades, and building ships. The Orion overextended themselves early since Keith explored a lot, and thus had to pull back his influence discs to avoid bankruptcy. I take advantage of this by using several influence actions to take over the vacated hexes, but I also nearly get bankrupt and it was only because I researched Advanced Economy that I was able to support my actions. Kent’s Eridani burned all of his money advantage by turn 2, as he ended up isolated from me and Keith due to the tile placement, and he spent a lot of actions preparing for an assault to the Galactic Center, although he did manage to kill off Ancient ship midway in the game. Things came to a head late in the game as I gambled and assaulted the Orion’s home planet, and the dice went my way and I push Keith off that valuable world! Kent successfully takes over the Galactic Center but in doing so I notice he left his backdoor planets (worth 3VP each!) undefended and I research Wormhole Generator tech and build 2 interceptors and send them off towards those 2 planets. Kent counters by building starbases in 1 tile and crushes 1 interceptor, but my other one nukes and takes over 1 entire system! Keith makes a last ditch attempt to recover his homeworld by putting all his chips into a counterattack fleet, and attacks my major armada. However, I upgraded them to include defensive shields, and he ended up missing a lot and 1 lose 1 cruiser but destroy his fleet. At the end game the Orion’s empire collapses due to bankruptcy and the Descendants of Draco rule the galaxy with a score of 26 to Kent’s 16 to Keith’s 9!!!

Board Game: King of Tokyo
= 3 Plays (+1)
After our Eclipse game we included Karl (Keith’s and Kent’s brother) and teach him KoT. We had 2 furious games in which Keith (or was it Kent) won the first, then I win the 2nd, which was a game I relished since I don’t remember the last time I won this game! Both were by KO!
Later in the evening KoT was also played at the Christmas party and it proved to be the perfect event starter for the evening. 2 6P games were played, but I did not join the first one. I did watch and saw how Mark got a very lucky roll as he got 9 points from the Complete Destruction card which was just what he needed to get a 20 VP win! I joined the 2nd game and here Paulo was extremely sneaky and low key and relied on the Energy Hoarder card to silently accumulate points for also a 20 VP win!

Board Game: Glory to Rome
= 1 Play
I bring out Glory to Rome after the Kot games at the FLGS and teach it to Kent and Keith. They initially were confused on what to do but midway they started getting it. Kent went Merchant crazy and this proved to be the key as he got almost all of the Materials bonus cards to win handily with a score of 34 to my 21 to Keith’s 8.

Board Game: Warhammer: The Game of Fantasy Battles (8th Edition)
= 1 Play
The last game at the FLGS was another Gladiator cup league game versus Jojo’s Daemons. In this game the side that controls the center objective wins the game, and the key point was that my skinks and magic managed to kill off Jojo’s Tzeentch Greater Daemon, and that enabled my Slann Mage to gain magic superiority which proved critical in helping my infantry defeat Jojo’s Khornate units in bloody hand to hand combat (no mean feat as them Daemons killed a LOT of my lizards!). I win with a Glad Cup score of 16 to Jojo’s 3, and that means my 6 League games are done and I now await the date when the finals will be!
After this game we then proceeded to Lucas’ house for the Xmas party, which was opened by the 2 Kot games I described above.

Board Game: Alien Frontiers
= 2 Plays
After KoT the group broke up into 2 groups. 1 group played a 2 vs 2 WH40K match, while Kent, Keith and I teach Alien Frontiers to Paulo. It is our first 4P game and it proved to be tight as all focused first on growing their fleet. Paulo had an early lead on landed colonies but Kent soon caught up and in a masterful move landed 2 colonies in 1 turn which made him overtake Paulo for the win with a score of 9 to Pao’s 7 vs my 6 and Keith’s 5!

Board Game: BANG! The Bullet!
= 2 Plays (New)
While the Warhammer 40,000 (Third Edition) group continued their game, Gelo brought out his copy of BANG! The Bullet! and taught us how to play. We had 2 5P games and I must say the fun in this game really is in guessing what role each player is using, except for the Sheriff of course. The first game ended hilariously as Dynamite exploded and killed Gelo, who was the Sheriff, as the outlaws win (I was the Renegade!). In the second Keith was the Sheriff and he had the character who could select one of his draws from the discard pile, and thus selected the draw 3 cards ability every turn and built a formidable defense. The thing is he didn’t know I was a Deputy and he kept on shooting at me together with Neil, who turned out also to be a Deputy! Dang! Keith ended up finally winning the game!
Bang is a nice party game, but I must say should be played with more players (5 or more!) to be truly enjoyed!

Other games played during the week.

Board Game: 7 Wonders
= 2 Plays

Played 2 quick games with the gals at the FLGS

Game 1: Julie's Rhodes Side A does a balanced approach with a heavy emphasis on science, and she gets 61 points which overcomes me taking advantage of Halikarnassos' discard ability as I get 54 by building expensive blue cards + the black mercenary card. Vangie had a hard time using Catan side A (first use!) as she could not focus on a strategy and thus ends with 45.
Game 2: I use my Olympia's side B ability to build a free building per age to great effect as I immediately build the stages to activate that power early in the game, and this time I go heavy on military structures (I do not normally go military) in order to deny Vangie the red cards as she had a leader which rewarded each red card, and I also build a lot of blue cards to get a score of 67, which just manages to edge out Vangie's Rome A and heavy blue focus (64 points) and Julie's Giza side A and again heavy science focus (62 points), as I finally get a 7 Wonders win over the gals after some time!

Board Game: Agricola
= 2 Plays

Game 1: The 3 gals were present, so we manage to get a 4P game in drafting cards from the Gamer's Deck (G deck) only! The Seed Spreader minor improvement proves a big help in giving me a planting strategy and this gives me enough food in order to finally have a develop a few pastures and max out my family, although I fail to renovate my home. This was enough to give me 28 points and the victory over Vangie's 25 and Julie's and Janine's 14 points each.
Game 2: This time we used the Agricola: Farmers of the Moor expansion, and used only the advanced Minor improvement cards (level 2). I go horse crazy and end up with a lot of the valuable animals, and this plus my points from the Major Improvements and vegetable focus enables me to get a score of 33 vs Julie's nice balanced farm (25 pts), Vangie's upgraded stone house (24 points), and Janine's balanced farm as well (21 pts).

Board Game: San Juan
= 1 Play
A quick game of this favorite was done to close the day. Vangie usually ends up winning as she gets to build the powerful 6 card buildings which give her a ton of bonus points. That day I did not give her the opportunity as I built as quick as I can (assisted by the bonus from the library) and thus get 12 buildings in to finish the game while the rest were still at 8-9, and some monuments give me the extra points over my cheap buildings to overcome Julie's and Janine's Chapel and Vangie's Residence as I win with 23 vs Julie's and Vangie's 19 and Janine's 18!

This was a very light gaming weekend thanks to some Christmas-related activities and nice weather. I played 2 games with my 2-year-old.

Cartagena - He decided to "assist" me by telling me which pirates I should move. Meanwhile, he moved only 1 pirate the entire game. I had fallen into his trap. Apparently, the game was to end when one of us had just 1 pirate reach the boat first.

My First Skip-Bo - My son assisted my wife, while I was on my own. We played with 10-card Skip-Bo piles. They won, and I still had 9 cards left.

Mage Knight Board Game
Played this twice. My brother was teaching it to me and we played the introductory co-op campaign. We did quite well and I ended up winning the game by a decent margin. We then tried the "Blitz Co-op" mode from the rulebook. We ran out of time at the end to conquer the two cities, but it was still a lot of fun.

Thunderstone Advance: Towers of Ruin
Played a 4 player game of this and barely won with 36 points. 2nd place had 34 points. I really like the "Advance" changes over the base Thunderstone. This is only my 2nd time playing Advance, but I really like it.

Article 27: The UN Security Council Game
Learned and played a quick game of this with the same 3 I played Thunderstone Advance with. I don't like politics, but I did enjoy this game.

Wiz-War (eighth edition)
Learned and played this twice. It's a very cut-throat game, but I had a blast with it.

Carcassonne
I've probably played around 40 games of this on my ipad over the weekend. I'm trying to get to 2000 ELO score (against AI opponents), and it's taking forever since it goes up 1 at a time every game I win.

This was supposed to be a weekend of Magic the Gathering and party games with a couple of friends, to celebrate our birthdays in December. However my house was a house of ill people last week - with two of my children both ill with a bug, then both my husband and I getting it later in the week, so we had to cancel. My husband spent most of the weekend in bed, but I did get a chance to show him Love Letter and Haggis, which we'd tried out on the Friday night, but he'd missed.

Apart from that it was just a few games with the kids - our usual Sunday HeroQuest, which we play whenever we have a quiet weekend, and also introduced the kids to Can't Stop, as well as playing Save the Animals - a Ludo variant my son likes.

Played a lot of Robinson crusoe over the weekend either solo or with my wife. We were playing cursed island. Lost most of the games. One game we only got three turns in. Finally on Sunday I was able to beat the scenario then with my wife we beat it, going to play it a couple more times then moveon to Jenny.

Forbidden Island also played a few games of this. One with my wife we were able to get out with plenty of tiles still. My kid was excited to hear we were playing the game plus made it off the island. Sadly in our game we had all treasures and were a turn away from winning when the whole island got flooded.

Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game played one game of this, also watched some people play. People are getting ready for kessel run I take it. Wish I could, but I'm busy during the days of the event.
Great gaming week.

We had a trade-tastic weekend, playing only games we'd traded for!

On Saturday, my husband and I hiked 12km across Britain's muddy South Downs with Last Will in our rucksack, and our overexcited Cocker Spaniel bouncing along in front. Luckily, it was a beautiful sunny day although bitterly cold. Cardboard and rain don't go together.

Our mission was to reach Brighton by 4pm where we did a no-postage trade of Last Will for Lords of Waterdeep with the lovely

If you're reading this - thanks so much, hope you enjoy Last Will and it was great to meet you (and chat about Agricola in a railway station, which isn't something I get to do that often). I played a quick match on San Juan on my iPhone on the train home.

Despite having been squelching through freezing fields since 10am, we immediately played Lords of Waterdeep when we got home at 6. It wasn't what I expected at all, and in a good way. I expected a dry euro a bit like Caylus but with a better theme. Instead, the game was easy to learn with lots of take-that and quest completion. On first impressions, definitely a keeper.

On Sunday, we played La Citta and Mexica - both older games we'd traded for our copy of Trajan with the wonderful

Again, we were delighted with the trade. La Citta seemed surprisingly deep given the simplicity of the rules and intuitive play (compared to modern euros like Trajan). Mexica was similar - simple rules, moderately deep play.

I could certainly imagine introducing Mexica or Tikal to my mum this Christmas, which I couldn't say about - say - Troyes. It made me wonder whether eurogame design has taken a wrong turn somewhere - making rules more complex without proportionally increasing the fun factor or strategic depth.
