Yet another busy weekend of work. I did have a friend call and say he had gotten Legendary in, and asked if I wanted to give it a try, so I rounded up a couple of the usual suspects and we went at it. I also convinced them to try Samurai, as it was on my un-played list, and I wanted to get it knocked off.

Four games of vying pengueeples, and nothing else.

I totally erred in failing to bring along a small game or two to a martial arts test on Sunday where I sat around for hours without entertainment before my class was examined. Grr.

This was a relatively light week of gaming for me, with only 8 plays done, of which half were sologames.

Board Game: Thunderstone Advance: Towers of Ruin
= 4 PlayS
Christmas usually means lots of idle time spent at the mall waiting for the wife to finish her holiday shopping, and it was exactly 1 such time this week where I had a chance to try out Thunderstone Advance: Towers of Ruin solo. Confident that I had enough experience with the game coming from my first 3 multiplayer plays, I select the Tower of Contempt scenario (using the 4-4-4 setup), as this was one where I have not tried during the multiplayer games. Needless to say I was soundly thrashed, as Orseg’s minion’s really gave me the whup ass. A couple of dragons even managed to breach the dungeon and they wreaked havoc on the village as my outmatched heroes vainly did their best to stem the tide. To add insult to injury, Orseg easily escaped and the scores weren’t even close, as I lose 99-41.

Thoroughly humbled, I try a more manageable scenario and thus go back to the Tower of Corruption scenario, versus Stramst’s undead in the wilderness. This time the heroes managed to defeat Stramst before he escapes, but they just manage to win with a score of 66-62.

The next day saw me waiting for my son at his university, and I thus had another chance to play solo. This time I play the Tower of Compulsion mission versus Belac. It was a good fight as I intentionally let several kobolds with negative VPs escape in order for them to wreak havoc on their own camp. Belac just manages to slip through my party’s fingers and upon counting I lose by 1 point 35 to 34!

My final solo game of the week had me use the randomizer cards for the first time, and this saw me fighting Stramst again, and he had his undead horde and treemen ally with some burnmarked versus my party led by Aria, Glammercast, Sternkin, and the Thundermage. I discover a very nice combo using the Royal Summons spell coupled with the buff from the Glammercast’s songs, as the horde of regulars suddenly become a bunch of super powerful warriors. This enabled me to overcome Stramst’s hordes, as even though he escapes my heroes win with a score of 83-63!

TDA is really starting to grow on me and this game is really a solid start for me on the deckbuilding genre!

Other games played during the week.

Board Game: 7 Wonders
= 2 Plays
Played 2 quick games with the gals at the FLGS. I also teach Mark (who is 40k and WHFB gaming buddy) how to play this, and he caught on quick enough to dive straight into the games with both the 7 Wonders: Leaders and 7 Wonders: Cities expansions.
Game 1: Me 72 Julie 62 Mark 54 Vangie 49
Game 2: Me 68 Julie 57 Mark 53 Vangie 39

Board Game: Dungeon Petz
= 1 Play
I finally get to bring this out after several months of inactivity, and had to refresh the gals on the mechanics. I also teach Mark, so we had a 4P game. Vangie caught on quickly, but Julie initially had difficulty remembering what to do as her pet immediately suffered since she didn’t have food to feed it! I had an early lead but was overtaken later in the game as the other 3 crowded me out of a pet, which meant I did not get to sell in the final round! Despite doing well at the end game exhibitions I failed to catch Vangie as she wins 44 to my 43, Mark’s 36 and Julie’s 32.

Board Game: Pandemic
= 1 Play
Me and Julie earlier had a 2P game on normal difficulty, as I teach her how to play. She was the scientist and I was the generalist, but I used a Special action card to become the medic. This was not enough as the diseases piled up, and we had outbreaks snowballing on us as we tried to help each other get the cards. The yellow and black diseases were cured but due to the outbreaks from the red cubes we lose the game as the outbreak meter reached 8!

Empire of the Sun- Played the 1942 scenario. This was my first time playing this one and there is a lot of game here. I had a hard time wrapping my head around all the rules, exceptions and strategies. I played the Allies and managed a win.I look forward to trying this one again in the near future after I reread the rules.

King of Tokyo- Had some laughs with this one. We played three or four games.

Coup- Continued the laughs with this one. This is a great little filler game that we enjoyed. Played three times.

I'm a contributor of a game club here in my city and we play almost every Saturday. And this Saturday was very productive for me.

I always enjoy knowing new games and I played some for the first time:
Mr. Jack in New York: I own the game but this was the first time I've played. I already played the pocket version and liked, that is why i bought this one. Despite being a longer game, this game is better than the pocket version!

Samurai Sword: Second time I play, just to confirm that I really don't like this one.

Seasons: Poorly explained... I get the game after the second season of the first year. But by this time, I already draft random style.
It's a good game, but not my style (creating combos and Magic style stuff).

Lords of Waterdeep Never played before and played two times this day. The first was very cool, but the second time two guys starts to making the game sucks. The Intrigue Cards are cleary unbalanced. Need some more plays to know how I really feel about this game.

We played a 4 player game of Runewars using a variant from http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/69379/bloodshed-in-ter.... We played for points having the endgame decided at the end of year 6. It was getting late and everyone decided to concede to me with 25 points (Next closest with 18), 12 from Dragon Runes and 13 from area control. The cool part for me was that I did it with my least favourite race the Uthuk. Last time I played Uthuk I got squished into Jelly!

Did quite a bit of gaming this weekend. Friday night I made plans with a bunch of the guys to go see The Hobbit in 3D at the Imax. I got to my friend's house about a half hour early for a quick game of Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation (Deluxe). We would play this game all the time, and have only used the classic characters, so this time we tried out the variant characters. I was the Fellowship, and was able to get Frodo to Mordor. The movie was awesome, I didn't know how they would make a single book into three 3-hour movies, but they have did a good job with the first one, keeping it pretty full and action packed without any uninteresting downtime.

On Saturday, went to my friend's house and played a game of DungeonQuest with him and his wife. I was Tatianna, and couldn't make it to the treasure room thanks to a bunch of dead ends. I did find a lot of loot on corpses and in crypts, so I was able to make it out with 570. My friend's wife kept getting attacked by monsters, and then fell into a bottomless pit. My friend made it to the treasure room, woke up the dragon twice, and still had a single hit point left and grabbed some loot to get out, with over 2000. He unfortunately (for him anyway) ran into a giant centipede that automatically did some damage, so he was done for, and I got the win.

Another friend made it over during the game, so we tried out Urban Sprawl for the first time. It was long, but pretty cool. One friend got a huge lead early by grabbing all the factory vocations that he could, which gave him some great payouts, but the other friend ended up taking first after building in some very valuable areas. I was last pretty much the whole game, trying to take over the lesser value rows that they weren't fighting over, but the payouts just weren't enough for me to keep up. It also didn't help that I won very few elections that way. The game ran pretty long for our first time, but I liked it, and it was pretty easy to teach and play. Doing well is the tough part.

Another friend arrived, so the five of us started a game of Sid Meier's Civilization. The new friend, and the wife were both new, and after a few turns, my friend's wife knew she wasn't going to want to go in for the long haul, so after some debate, we just decided to end it. She went to bed, another friend called it a night, so the three of us that were left played a final game of Railways of the World using the Railways Through Time expansion for the first time. We chose the medieval era, ancient Greece, the wild west, and the future maps. It was an interesting game, and slightly tough to wrap our heads around all the different maps and options (isn't time travel always that way?). I took first, thanks to a large point gain on one move that gave me a couple bounties at once. I like how this expansion scales with the number of players, as you just add more maps with more people. I would like to try it with 5 or 6, just to add in more bounties across the different maps and see how it plays out.

On Sunday, wen tot my parent's house. My wife, mom, and I played a game of Thunderstone Advance. It was my mom's first time playing, and she needed help adding up her attack each turn to decide where to go (we had Glamercasts and Dwarven Ale in the mix, which adds attack and strength across all heroes, which was tripping her up). I simply gave her the numbers and she made the decisions, and in the end, she won with 44 points. Her Glamercasts and Dwarven Ale heavy deck won out over my multitude of Dancing Swords. I had 35 points. My wife got last with 28 points, which was surprising as she had the strongest start and killed a couple monsters before the rest of us got our first.

After dinner, we played a game of Castles of Burgundy, which my wife slaughtered us at. She had board 8 with a single field, which she filled up entirely with chickens and goats, for massive points. On top of that, she got both bonus tiles for sold goods. I got five other bonus tiles for buildings and scrolls, but it wasn't enough. I had a hard time getting what I wanted because I was last in turn order the whole game. I still took second, and my mom got last.

We finished up the night with a a game of Monopoly Deal, that my mom destroyed us in. Not much more to say about that, her wall of money was impenetrable.

Used this to introduce 18xx to some family members, and they seemed to enjoy it pretty well. There was some rules confusion of course, but hopefully we will get in an encore play before I leave town after Christmas. The scores were ~3300, ~2400, ~2200.

Also played a bunch of PitchCar Mini with other family members and that went over pretty well. I'm having a lot of success getting non-gamers to play it, so it was definitely a worthwhile purchase.

Lastly played some Bohnanza, which came down to two two-way ties: 17-17-13-13. I got 2nd place due to the "cards in hand" tie breaker. Of the top two players, one did buy the 3rd bean field and one did not. I really like the extra bean field rule as it adds another good decision to the game.

anyway I'm half asleep as I write this so sorry for the lack of detail soblue

This weekend was a back to back double night of fun at CABS. Friday night was the annual general meeting with free games given away and free pizza eaten. Both of inferior quality, but it was free! Saturday was a "normal" CABS meeting, so 16 hours of gaming and a food truck to keep you going.

I arrived on Friday hoping to sneak in a league game of 1st & Goal, but I couldn't find an opponent who wasn't busy. Instead, I got in a game of Sentinels of the Multiverse using another CABbies set without the oversized villain cards. Playing without them made me realize just how awesome those cards are! We had a three player slugfest with Apostate that looked grim early, but we managed to eek out a win with all three heroes at seven health or less.

Next up was pizza and a light game while dining. Tahiti was a game I Kickstarted last summer, and I finally got me copy a couple of weeks ago. It's light, family friendly, pretty and enough strategy to keep you mildly engaged. A good game to play with non-gamers, or with gamers who want to socialize while playing.

Which is something I can never do with my next game, Agricola. The more I play the 'Gric, the more I appreciate it. In fact, I've begun to ask myself if I'd rather play whatever the new shiny game I just played for the first time, or play Agricola. It's slowed down some of the game purchasing. Well, a little anyway.

I finished Friday with a play of another game I adore, Ninjato. I've had 19 plays of Ninjato in just over a year, and I enjoy it every time I play it. I can't imagine this one leaving my collection.

I made it an early Friday, because I knew I had a long Saturday. I was helping run a CABS School session of Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game. We were running just the Core Set in the afternoon with four demo tables available, so no waiting. We had a number of takers on the game with all four tables in play at one point.

In the early evening, we ran two 100 point games using team play. Team play is really interesting as you have less control over half your squad. You've got to guess what both your partner and your opponent are going to do. I'm really enjoying X-Wing so far. Between the demos and the big games, I got to play three times on Saturday and would have enjoyed more.

Next up was a dinner break and some lighter fare (in food and games). I played filler dice and card games of A Fistful of Penguins, Can't Stop, and 12 Days. Nice light games to give the brain a break, before I finished off the evening with the super awesome game, Agents of SMERSH.

If Tales of Arabian Nights, Pandemic, Arkham Horror and James Bond had a love child, it would be called Smersh. And, I'd adopt that child. A storytelling co-op spy themed game where your choices matter, but fate might be fickle, Agents of Smersh is just plain fun. I've had four plays in just over a week, and I still want to play more. If the rulebook was better, and it is a bit rough, I'd give this one a 10.

Sunday I got to play "look at the new shiny games and try to learn the complex rules" to Clash of Cultures and Archipelago. Really looking forward to getting those on the table.

Hasn't hit the table in a while, but Saturday saw a game of Alien Frontiers with my husband.

Board Game: Cartagena

Sunday, our daughter was over and we taught her one of our current favorites...Cartagena. This was the first time we've played it as anything other than a 2-player game and it was quite different. It was also the first time I've ever won a game.

Christmas season has started already so we were out and about most of the weekend visiting family and friends, but we did manage to get one game of Pastiche in Sunday evening before bed.

My wife and daughter love this game, and I like it well enough to play it most of the time, even if I did want to play something else, haha.

Once again I did the same thing that I always do in this game, I race to get the finishing points, forgetting that everyone gets one more turn after I do that, and they have the extra knowledge that the game is ending to try to maximize points by finishing paintings and getting paint colors to count towards unfinished paintings. So I came in last place again, even though I finished out the race to 40.

My wife 51
My Daughter 46

For the second week in a row, Castles of Burgundy consumed our plays this past week which only included this weekend since I was up North for the week helping my parents.

Saturday
3x - Castles of Burgundy

I won 192(#5) to 191 (#3) in a very close game, of course.
I won 219(#8) to 121(#6) in a blowout!
I won 224(#6) to 150(#1) in convincing fashion to end the evening

Sunday
1x - Castles of Burgundy

My wife successfully (or finally?) inflicted her revenge 193(#5) to 182(#7) thus brining our CoB play total to 41x--the equivalent to Innovation, another favorite of ours.

meeple Keep playing...

Introduced a friend to Dominion on Sunday, played a quick game with the starter set before delving into a peculiar and awesome Seaside/Dark Ages setup.

My girlfriend loves board games as much as I do, and she and I have very similar tastes in games, but she can't stand all the shuffling in Dominion (and to be honest, I can't blame her). So I'm glad to have another friend to share this game with.

Also, not a play, but on Sunday afternoon, a friend called to let me know that the local comic book shop had put the two Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game expansions on 50% off clearance. What ensued thereafter was nothing less than a full-on battle for my soul between the demons of greed and cardboard lust, and the better angels of my nature. You see, my board game shelf is physically incapable of handling any more games, so I have no reason to be shopping for new ones at all. But on the other shoulder were all the old arguments that you've all made to yourselves a thousand times before - "When else am I going to get it this cheap?" (Stuff you don't use is worthless, no matter how cheap...) "With the expansions, we'll play it twice as much!" (Two times zero is... help me out here, people.)

Anyway, long story short, I bought 'em. But I was tormented! Tormented, I tell you!

Large-ish scale game, with home brewed scenarios. Lots of chaos, lots of fun.

Two games of San Juan. First was a teaching game that I won. Second game the other player was playing a number of buildings as I was slower in building but going for higher VP in what I built. They built 11 structures so I was planning out what I was going to try and pull off before it ended. I figured playing the violet structure that gives me +1 VP for my other violet structures would put me in the running. She then played a 5 VP card, and I lost by 1.

One game of LoW. Again, a teaching game where I won, but all things considered it was close. Definitely need to play it again with more players as two players seems a little lacking in tension.

Last week, we had a slumber party & we played King of Tokyo: Power Up! (as resident alpha male, of course I won ) and Hanabi, in which we scored a pretty respectable 16 points on our first try.

For the rest of the week, I played a solo game of Paths of Glory, a 2-player game of Dungeon Lords: Festival Season with Pluizebol and finished my fourteen Gold/Diamond edition Legend of the Five Rings decks.

Friday night, we played some quick games before heading out to the Hobbit.

Zombie Dice was silly and random and fast. As usual someone rolled the big opening brain haul (I got 1), moved steadily toward 13 (I got shotgun) and then triggered the end (more shotguns!). My wife took him close with a huge last turn, but fell just short. For 10 minutes it has a good bit of tension (of the push your luck variety).

Then we played the highly requested Piece o' Cake in which I managed to win all 4 kinds I kept. That alone was pretty surprising, but neither the 10 or 11 cake winners could overtake and even my wife's radical eat a lot strategy fell short. My first win at this!

I do love the angst such a simple looking game can produce. How to cut? Which piece to take? That is the whole game, but some delicious decisions in there.

Not long till we had to go get in line so I pulled out Pick Picknic, which is quite a hoot with 5, lots of clashes over corn and foxes jumping birds. Frenetic (not just because we were watching the clock) and despite one fellow seeming pulling a fox on every turn, it was my prodigious corn pile that was the clear winner.

Oh and the movie was great. Enjoyed it immensely.

Saturday was a little slow after our late night, my wife was out at a baby shower while I helped my son with a project. He got finished and we talked about trying out Eurorails, I even had the box on the table when his friend showed up at the door and they went off to play. *sigh* So I played a little Reiner Knizia's Decathlon as a solo game, trying to beat some personal bests.

When my wife got home, after the usual unwinding, we played a couple hand of Parade. Kinda like Piece o' Cake, it was picked up on a whim in the FLGS one day and has had staying and playing power beyond its slight appearance. First hand was a bruising battle, with not clear majorities and indeed my wife broke two of mine at the end, ensuring her win. The second game went much more my way with nice majorities in 2 colors and single low cards in the others. Made for a good score for me.

Sunday was a Christmas preparations day (lights fully up, ingredients bought). I had an evening game penciled in, but my wife had a rather extreme reaction to some mushrooms we got from our neighbor (I was fine) so we abandoned that in favor of an early night.

Eclipse was the main event of the weekend, but our third game. From Friday to Saturday, things went thusly (all four players):

Smash Up (2 plays)
7 Wonders: Cities
Eclipse
Rex: Final Days of an Empire
Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game
Seasons

Every game was a first play for everyone! Eclipse was the most well-received of the heavier games. Smash Up was also a hit. We were somewhat underwhelmed with Legendary, but perhaps this was due to the suggested first play set being too easy? Also underwhelmed with Rex, which ended way too quickly in round 3. Part of the problem was that with just 4 players, the board is just too wide open. Seasons we liked enough to try again.

Saturday was a Christmas/holiday party at a friends house and we broke out CAH after everyone had a couple drinks in them.

We played with as many as 12 and as few as 7 as the night wore on. We made sure to play with the 2nd expansion and the holiday pack first after loading our initial hands with core and 1st expansion cards.

Lots of "good" stuff in those sets.

I won two black cards and had a lot of fun.

Finally, after three weeks of no gaming due to a ridiculous work schedule (read 60-70) work weeks. I got some gaming in.

Played a 6 player game of Red Dragon Inn 3 in which my wife won. I had a good shot, but towards the end I had to take 6 alcohol which lead to my demise pretty fast.

Taboo
Next we played a six player game of Taboo. Boys against girls. Like always, the Men captured a complete victory.

Lifeboat
Finished up the night with a five player game of this, again, my wife one.

Well my weekend started off bad. Friday, my 6 year old had the flu and I was supposed to work Saturday and Sunday. By the time I was supposed to go on call on Saturday my son had passed his flu my way. Thankfully by Saturday evening it had started to pass.

Saturday:
Vampire Hunter
Board Game: Vampire Hunter

It was an interesting game, we especially liked the way the tower lights changed the game board. As a team, my son, my wife and I all killed Drakos.

Sunday
I went into work late, and got off early. Gotta love 4 hour days, spent more time getting ready for work and driving to and from than I did at work. Got home, and we played:

Defenders of the Realm
Board Game: Defenders of the Realm

My wife, whom claims to not be a board gamer requested this one and two others that we played today. It was so close, we had defeated three of the four generals, and were preparing to attack the final one, when he moved into Monarch City.

played this with my son while my wife went to take a nap, not sure who won, as the table shook, and everything fell.

Then we had company come over and we played:

The Adventurers the Temple of Chac

We taught this game to a new friend that came by last night, I died multiple times, and my wife died once. The 6 year old was the victor.
