One of the greatest things about working in the automotive industry is getting two shutdowns a year! I spent mine with friends and family this year, taking a bit of time off from everything (including the internet) to recharge and bond. Here is what I have played so far this shutdown. I still have one more day off, and tonight will still see a few games hit the table I hope.

Coup- played a quick game of this one.

Empire of the Sun- second time playing this one. Second win as allies but I am still really struggling with the rules/strategy on this game. It just isn't moving together for me yet.

Pandemic: On the Brink- 3x playing this one with 6 epidemics and four players. Lost every one.

Tichu- second time playing this. Second time I was crushed.

Glen More- taught this one to three other players they all liked it and want to play again.

Junta-played a seven player game of this. It was my first time playing it. The coups were a little tedious but we really got some good laughs out of the assassinations.

Axis & Allies- Played with my eldest daughter. We both enjoyed it.

Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition- my first time playing this version one on one and I really struggled as the Allies. The Japanese navy is just a beast in this game.

My intercalary days were full of eldritch and squamous horrors. I played three quite entertaining games of Cthulhu Gloom, and one of Elder Sign.

In the latter, I and my daughter (playing Miskatonic professor and student) were both devoured by Yig. We weren't even close to sealing him out of our reality, and he had us for appetizers.

Board Game: Elder Sign

Oh, we also played some Scrabble Slam!, which was pretty lacking as games go.

"Gates of Moscow" scenario from the Eastern Front expansion. I haven't played this game with my girlfriend in six months, and this play reminded me why - we trash-talk, we pout, we whine, we get genuinely upset and we are generally not our best selves.

Oh well, there are plenty of other games we enjoy playing together - even Combat Commander: Europe! - and there are other people that I'll play Memoir with, so there's not really a problem here.

Played two games of this awesome party game. We laughed for a while playing this game. Highly recommended and I can't wait to get in more games with the right party group.

We play this game to every screw your neighbor goodness. This always gets rambunctious and crazy. Two games in which I lost, but had a good time.

I had Friday off, so my weekend started on Thursday...

Thursday I played Dice Town and King of Tokyo with the King of Tokyo: Power Up! expansion with my wife and son.

Friday night we had some friends over. We started with a 5 player game of Wits & Wagers. Fun game! I won going all in on the last answer. I forget what the question was, but my bet was on "Less than all given answers" - I was the only one who bet on that and it's a 5 to 1 payout.

Next we played Dice Town twice. One of our guests had to leave (4:30 AM wake up for work Saturday) so we played Dice Town again 4-player. I won both of these games. Both times I got lucky with lots of Queens at the end and was able to steal 4 cards and get the last few high point property cards with the best poker hand. Both times it was 4 Queens and an Ace kicker.

We wrapped the night up with a game of Dixit. This one I was doing poorly in throughout the game, but started gaining ground in the end and ended up in second place. On one turn my clue was "Juliet" (my wife's name) - She gave me the "you're in the doghouse" look and said "This is going to make us or break us." I was sweating bullets thinking I'm sleeping on the couch tonight. After the hand was finished, I looked at her nervously "So which is it?" She said "Made us" with a half-smile. Whew - dodged a bullet with that one.

Saturday was my wife's Birthday. What we did that day was her choice. She choose to play Guillotine with my son and I. Later she decided to go boot shopping while my son and I played Dice Town. He's been requesting Dice Town quite a bit lately, even more than King of Tokyo which kind of surprised me.

On Sunday we went to a friends house for couples gaming and there were six of us playing. We started with 25 Words or Less. The first time my wife and I played this we totally sucked at it. This was our second time playing and we didn't win, but we improved quite a bit. Fun little game.

Next we played I'm the Boss!: The Card Game. This game is a blast with 6 players! I explained the game and started as "The Boss". The first round was a wash as the pot went negative and no one got paid. The next four rounds were great, lots of hilarious card-play and negotiation. But the final round was brilliant. The guy who was Boss for the final round is a great guy, but typically very slow to catch on to games. Throughout the game he was making what came across as "bonehead plays" (questionable, at the very least). At the beginning of the final round, I was the clear leader and the target of the other players. The Boss started the pot with a negative card. I had a positive card, two +/- cards and a move 1 in the color he played. I was sitting to his left. Given the pot started negative and I had the +/- cards, I felt pretty secure getting a piece of the action. I showed him one of the +/- cards and said I'd discard it if he made me a cousin. He agreed. a couple plays later the pot is worth positive 2. Play is going around the table and people are playing "piece of the action" cards but the pot doesn't get any higher than 2. I forget exactly how it went down, but it ends up the Boss made the pot negative 12, moved my +/- card to himself and was in for 4 shares. He ended up winning because everyone else lost money (I was in for 2 shares myself) and he gained a bunch by making a huge negative pot and reversing it for himself, screwing everyone else. I don't know how he did it, his timing was perfect and the round just seemed to fall into place for him. We all laughed in awe as he stole the game.

After that we played Apples to Apples. My first time playing and I found it enjoyable.

All in all a great weekend of light gaming.

One of my new Christmas games has become quite the hit with Stacey and LIndy, especially Lindy. We played it 2 times Friday, 2 times Saturday and once on Sunday. It is very addicting. The only negative observation is that it takes longer than it says on the box. MOst of our games come in around 80 minutes. We could delete one round but so far no one is willing.

Also on Friday Two by Two with Stacey.

Saturday
Also, 2 games of Boggle with Melissa and Lindy and one game of Fresco, another Christmas game, with Stacey & Lindy,

Sunday
Also one game of Fairy Tale with Stacey and 3 games of Boggle with Melissa and Lindy

On Friday, December 28 I invited some friends at my place for a whole noon-evening-night of games. The games we played were:
Battles of Westeros - A demo game with a friend who wanted to see how Battles of Westeros works. He wasn’t too impressed.
Tannhäuser - As a third friend came, we left Battles of Westeros and played Tannhäuser with the Operation Novgorod expansion.
Defenders of the Realm - When a fourth friend came we switched to Defenders of the Realm, that ended with a loss.
Roborally - Finally, we closed our meeting with the Moving Targets scenario.

On Sunday, December 30 I played Defenders of the Realm with a couple of friends again: again, it was another loss for us (the fourth straight). Then we switched to Roborally.

My family and I spent this entire week (and Christmas) in my wife’s home province. Of course, I bring several boardgames with the hope of introducing my nieces and nephews in law to this wonderful hobby, as they have never yet tried these kind of games! All I can say was that the effort was a definite success, and on our last evening we had 3 separate groups each playing a different game at the same time!

Board Game: King of Tokyo
= 2 Plays with me, 3 without

King of Tokyo is of course the easiest game to serve as a “gateway” for the kids (and there are a LOT of kids at my in-law’s place). We initially begin by having a 4P game with myself + 3 of the older kids (young teens). In the first game my God Daughter Mariel proves the King (or Queen) of the Hill and knocks out everyone for a KO win. For the second game it became a 7P brawl as the younger kids join in (I have Brockenbar and thus 7P is achievable) and while I initially just moderated I ended up coaching young Marion, which didn’t help as Andrea pulled off a great VP win!

The next 2 games (in which I moderated) were all 7P. I remember 1 game where Eater of the Dead proved crucial since with so many monsters dying the owner of the card got several VPs for the win, and finally in the last one Shawn got a lot of good VP die rolls and he sealed the win by getting good damage rolls versus Mariel (who was in Tokyo) when he was at 19VP. She vacated the city and Shawn’s cyber Bunny entered Tokyo for the last VP and the win!

Of course, this was 1 of the games played in our last evening. This time, it was the young ones (ages 7-10) who had a 5P game. I did not get to supervise since I was busy handling the 7 Wonders group, so I’m sure there were mistakes made, but I did get to see 7 year old Marion get a great card assisted 5 point last turn damage to defeat his cousin 7 year old Jodelle in Tokyo to win the game on KO!

Board Game: 7 Wonders
= 3 Plays + 1 without me

The first game had me play together with my daughter Sharlene and Shawn, with all the bells and whistles of the expansions. It was a great game and my Alexandria B just barely edged out Sharlene’s Roma A with a score of 70 versus her 69, while Shawn’s Petra A had 43 points.

The 2nd game had me and Shari teach this to Mariel and Jason. We played with just the base rules and Sharlene had a huge 48 points from Science to win with 69 to my 53 to Mariell’s 42 and Jason’s 39.

We immediately try another game, this time with the Leaders expansion, with Shawn joining us. Sharlene again goes heavy science which JUST manages to overcome my heavy blue strategy as it was she who this time edges me out by 1 point, with a score of 57 to my 56, Shawn’s 51, and Marielle and Jason’s 46.

In the last evening, I teach the basic game to their cousins Ella Mae, Eron, and Brian, as they join Sharlene and Jason for a 5P game. Experience plays a big factor as Sharlene wins with 52 vs Jason’s 45, Eron’s 42, Brian’s 38, and Ella Mae’s 37.

Board Game: Pandemic
= 2 Plays

Shawn and me teach this to Sharlene (with the roles and special actions cards from the expansion included). We play the first game in easy mode, and with me as the Scientist, Shawn as the Medic, and Shari as the Field Operative we win, eradicating the black and red diseases in the process. I find the Field Operative to be a cool role!

In the second game, play in normal mode. We changed the base of operations to Manila instead of Atlanta, and this time I was the Medic. Shawn the Operations Expert, and Sharlene the Troubleshooter. We again win the game, eradicating Black, BUT were 3 cards short of defeat!

Board Game: Morels
= 1 Play + 1 without me

I teach this to Marielle 1 morning, and with Shari’s guidance proceeds to outcook me as she wins 53-35. Sharlene then plays versus her, and in a tight low scoring game Shari just edges out Marielle 30-26.

Board Game: Ticket to Ride: Europe
= 3 Plays (without me)

I teach this classic gateway game midweek, and the kids have 2 5P games with me just overseeing them. In the first one Marielle manages to put ALL her blue trains in a straight monster of a route and wins, while in the second Sharlene dominates and wins with her red trains.

In the final evening, Marielle just edges Shawn by around 5 points, while Andrea’s hoarding of cards backfired and she fails to lay trains on time and thus finishes way behind the other 2, in a relatively loose 3P game.

Board Game: Through the Desert
= 3 Plays (without me)

I again teach and just oversee this game, and Sharlene then Marielle pull out wins in the 3 games of this Knizia classic, with Marielle winning twice.

Board Game: San Juan
= 1 Play

Played a game of this with Shari and Shawn 1 evening. They both connive against me and Shari ends up winning 30 to my 25 and Shawn’s 20!

I would definitely say that my efforts in repacking then lugging around the games for this trip was very rewarding, and the right boardgames can definitely become the focal points of interaction and bonding between people of all ages! Best of all I have introduced my nieces and nephews to something new and different!

As a side note, I also got in 13 plays of Le Havre (The Harbor) on the Ipad. I really suck in it though since I keep on losing to the bots, but it is still fun to play!!!

Played a 3 player game on this on Thursday night. This is very quickly becoming my #1 game. So far it's the only wargame I can get my usual group to play.

On Sunday night we had a 4 player game of Pillars of the Earth.

Wife and I played a copy of Italy and included Power Grid: The Robots. We had 2 Robots and us.

In the end my wife won yet again and her record against me was 8-0. My favorite game and yet she keeps winning.

Now today we say down and played Power Grid: Brazil/Spain & Portugal with 2 Robots as well. We played Spain side. In the end the robots scripts were written in that they built as many cities they could and that caused the Steps 2 and 3 came fast.

In the end I my wife and I both had 16 powered cities ,but I WON by having more money. WOOT! I beat my wife.....at Power Grid. Well actually it was 2 Robots and me defeated my wife at PG.

Last CABS meeting of the year was a long one for me. I opened the doors on Saturday at 10:00 am and closed them at 2:15 am on Sunday. Sixteen hours of gaming. Well, gaming and socializing.

I got to start off with a three player game of Fleet. If Santa didn't stuff your stocking with this great game, go grab a copy for the New Year. Clever game that gets better for me with each play.

Next up was a three player game of Clash of Cultures. My third game and one where I wanted to try a different strategy. This play showed me that you cannot force a playstyle from the start when your Objective cards don't align. Fun game, with a poor result for me.

I got in a league play of 1st & Goal. A brutal slugfest of a game between my Scranton Scorchers and the Toronto Thunder. Tough to score on the Thunder, and the second half saw them playing constantly on my side of the field. My Scorchers blocked a field goal attempt in the fourth quarter to pretty much seal the win, 10-0. The only thing worse than playing against the Thunder is actually playing the Thunder. Tough, tough team to win with.

I also got in my first real play of Archipelago. Teaching wasn't as difficult as I expected, and the medium length game didn't last as long as I expected either. Interesting first play that ended in an unsatisfying three way tie in a three player game. Unsure about this one yet.

I finished the long day with a five player game of Hansa Teutonica, which was sadly my first play of it this year.

Not many games, but I had a really good day at CABS.

We were four at home.
First we played Vinhos.
Board Game: Vinhos

Bad weather during half the game and low scores in the end.

Then we played The Downfall of Pompeii.
Board Game: The Downfall of Pompeii

The two girls announced clearly they were teaming against the two guys... and put it in practise with the first omen and then with lava coming. We had to counter to survive... but in the last move, I put a knife in the back of the other guy to win the game with ten survivors. devil
Here is a pict of the game

12.30.12

I went to the cafe Meisia in Belleville, not being sure it will be open this day. A few people finishing a Trajan. Once they were done, we settled for a three players Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar.
Board Game: Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar

My first play of this game (although I bought it at Essen in October). I opted for a strong production of corn ang being first in the center pyramid and, in the end, shared the first place.
Now that I know the rules, I'll play this one regularly.

I played a couple games of SW XWing minis. Won one and lost one. Vader was a definate deciding factor in both.

I also played a couple games of 7 Wonders with both expansions and got 2nd place in both. Not sure if Cities is really worth the extra stuff it adds. I like Leaders, but Cities not so much.

I played a game of Dungeons & Dragons: Conquest of Nerath Board Game. I can say that I love the concept of D&D meets A&A, but the starting position of Nerath in a 4 player game is pretty crappy. They have no advantages and once black pushes them out of the north its a really tough slog. For the team game of 2v2 Capital capture I could see it going on much longer than is fun, but I don't like the quick point grab vitory system either. Oh well.

My favourite chance to play other than Star Wars was a game of Runewars. I won another game with this one with humans and made the Uthuk player upset as he was double teamed by the Undead and Elves while I came in and flanked both of them to get an "Easy Victory" as he put it. I thought it was a great victory as I got both them to attack him by making him seem like a bigger threat. Meta-gaming is all part of it I say.

My wife learned "Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer" and would have tied me except that I picked up a Mechana Construct on the last play that gave me a win by 2. She didn't say so, but I think she prefers Dominion, which we had played several times over Christmas in Houston.

Maybe I'll spring Thunderstone on her next.

Two plays of this, which lay under the Christmas tree for my other half, from me. We managed a single win each and then put it aside, both convinced that the tension produced by the game was best experienced in small quantities.

She's more into her Pratchett than I am, and really enjoyed the references and the figures on the cards. As somebody who lives outside that whole universe I enjoyed the game and didn't feel that I needed a knowledge of Discworld in order to get into it. Tense stuff, though.

A rather light holiday weekend for gaming. Finally got to try this out, though.

Also, Star Trek: Catan snore. While not precisely putting lipstick on a pig, it's still the same old game.

1 play Friday and 1 play Saturday. These were the first two plays of this game which we got for Christmas from my wife's parents. I really like this game, the theme is a lot of fun and the artwork is great. My wife likes it too, although she got a bit upset when I pulled out a win in our second game.
