Not much gaming in this weekend, only time we had was when we were at a Destination Imagination competition with our 8 year old and we got to play some games in between events and early Sunday morning before the running started again.

Played a couple games of Ugg-Tect, kids loved it and it did manage to draw a crowd with a bunch of 8 and 9 year olds acting like cave people with their parents.

Also played a lot of Chef Cuckoo! with the kids, they all really enjoyed that as well.

After the competition we went to have dinner and during the hour or so wait that we had for our food we broke out Rory's Story Cubes in all it's variants to keep everyone entertained and had a good time, maybe a bit too good of a time since the people that sat at the table next to us got up and left after about five minutes, oh well.

Got in a game of The Great Heartland Hauling Co. and Carcassonne with my wife on Sunday morning before the kiddos got up and we had to start running around again.

Dance Central 3 got played a bit on Sunday Evening, my wife and I use it as an exercise tool when we can't get out of the house.

Tomb Raider (2013), I also played this a bit this weekend. I don't think that I have ever played a re-boot game this well done. Absolutely fantastic.

Played a 6p game of 1817 on Saturday. All but one of us were experienced 18xx players (the one exception had one game of 1856 under his belt). I thought it was pretty interesting but we played for 8 hours, and after about 6 hours of any game I tend to stop caring I would play it again but I'd rather play 1844 or 1846.

Due to my travels and busy schedule, I managed to get just 1 play of this extremely light filler. I taught this to some of my 40k buddies, and it was an instant hit.

I proved to be the best zombie by being the first to 13 brains versus Kent and Chris.

Kent and Chris played another game with Randel plus another guy, and Kent won despite having a slow start.

Despite this, I was mollified since I finally got my copy of Macao, as well as 2 starter sets of the Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game, and 1 each of the Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game – TIE Interceptor Expansion Pack and Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game – Y-Wing Expansion Pack! Looking forward to getting them played!

We played King of Tokyo with a coworker friend couple. It's always a bit of a tightrope since the guy of the couple loves games and the girl couldn't really care less about them, doesn't really want to attack her hubby, etc. We played two games of KoT leaving him to want more and her to want to do the dishes

I had a great weekend of gaming:

Friday with a group of friends:

King of Tokyo
Suburbia
Cosmic Encounter

King of Tokyo and Cosmic Encounter were fun as usual. Also, we played Suburbia for the first time and it was a hit with all of us. Great game!

And Saturday with my wife:

Jaipur (x3)

I've been wanting her to try this one for a while, and it is the first game she really liked. Yay!

shake Not much gaming this weekend...

Sunday
1x - Alhambra

Friday night I had a pre-teen devotional at church with my oldest daughter where we participated as a team in a number of challenges in which we won, had fun, and were awarded a big bag of M&M's.

Saturday I got in a good long run and a nap, but no takers on playing a game.

Sunday I thought was going to be another goose egg on getting anyone interested in a game. In fact, I almost started exploring my solo game options when my wife graciously offered to play a quick game of Alhambra.

While referencing the rules during the game I noticed that there are special 2p rules which we were not aware existed. Smile. Laugh. Yet, another game we've played quite a bit that we learn needs some tweaking. Ah, well. The rules look reasonable and should lead to a quicker game and lower scoring. So we'll try it next time it gets to the table.

As for the game, my wife beat me soundly. We played with the Bureau de Change and The Worker's Huts mini-expansions from The Vizier's Favor box.

meeple Keep playing...

Got in a three player game on Saturday. I continue to like this game more and more with each play.

Good gaming weekend. Also played:

Board Game: Luna

Enjoyed this as much the second time as I did the first.

Board Game: Milestones

Fun, relatively light, euro. Entertaining.

Board Game: Snowdonia

First play, though did not finish due to time constraints. Really liked the game. Theme nicely drives the rules, making learning relatively intuitive.

Board Game: Guildhall

I agreed to play this in exchange for another person agreeing to play Kemet. This did not appear to be a game I would enjoy at all, but I was pleasantly surprised.

A rather pleasing card game with lots of interesting decisions and strategies. Highly recommended.

Well, it's one shinier isn't it? ... Okay, why don't you just make five a bit more shiny and then that would be the most shiny? ... Because these go to six.
I played quite a few games:

Defenders of the Realm - A three-player games: after six defeats in a row, that was our first success in more than three months.

Twilight Struggle - I played it twice and lost both games.

Smash Up - A three-player game: Zombie Dinosaurs won, Robot Wizards placed second, Ninja Pirates came third. So far Zombies have won almost every combo they played in.

Cosmic Encounter - A five-player game that ended with some thrills.

Dirty Pig - An introductory two-player game.

Cyclades - An introductory five-player game: I hadn’t played it since early December.
It was a very satisfying game as, although none of my opponents had ever played Cyclades before, they understood quickly how the game works and played very aggressively: I was delighted to see that my teachings had been listened to as one of them (the guy who then won) offered almost everything he had to secure the first god and then be able to buy both the Harpy and the Pegasus, thus removing the only defender in an opponent’s metropolis and conquering the second one he needed to win.

RoboRally - A short introductory six-player game: we played only seven or eight turns before running out of time and put the game back into the box.

Didn't play much this weekend, just played a few games against my mom and wife on Sunday.

Started out with a game of Thunderstone Advance that I took last place in.
Then I won a game of Code 777, and finished off winning a game of Fluxx.

Decent little filler that was played at the end of game night to kill some time. I think it works as long as it doesn't get played too often.

Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game

Played a three player game. I picked Hulk as one of the heroes to be added and tried to see how well that worked for me. It sort of did but didn't. I couldn't buy the highest hero cards, never damaged Loki, but I had little issue beating up the other villains and a couple of times being pure overkill. We won, but I came in third. I need more plays of it, but it temporarily gets into my Top 10.

Hanabi

Best gateway co-op going. Theme is there mostly due to the art, but the player interaction is what sells it. The way clues are giving out there's no alpha player either. Scored 17 on our first game and 23 on the second with being one random draw of a card from a player's hand from scoring 24 and another round from hitting 25. The difficulty in getting a perfect score is really countering going through the deck before completing all of the five stacks. Doing the stacks is bad enough but the end of the deck forces you to play cards versus discarding them which is difficult to do since discarding gets you clue tokens back.

All three were new to me so I'll go more into detail during the monthly new to me geek list.

Started out with another solo play of Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game utilizing both sections from the Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game: Space Marine Pack 1 scoring a hard-fought win, losing both members of the gray team in the final room. After rolling 0s to lose my troops, it was fitting that my roll on the Launch Control Room with only two tokens came up 0 for the win.

Doing some house cleaning Saturday I also stumbled on one I didn't know I had,
Board Game: Formula Motor Racing
It's okay as a filler game, but not something I'll suggest on a regular basis. Still, I played out a 17-race season, just to say I had done it. Playing a season adds the dimension of avoiding a color you might otherwise play to draft forward because it helps the points leader too much. Still, not much relation to Formula 1 racing here, Reiner Knizia or not.

Board Game: Lords of Waterdeep
Finally, on Sunday I re-read the rules and pushed around a solitaire four-player Lords of Waterdeep I'm hoping to get the Friday night game group to try this one, although I don't know that this is their sort of game. Hope springs eternal!

Friday night I played a game of Elder Sign with my daughter. It was our first go with my newly-fabricated revisionist neo-orthodox Lovecraftian glow-in-the-dark Elder Sign tokens:
Board Game: Elder Sign

The Ancient One was Shub-Niggurath, and I played "Ashcan" Pete, while my daughter was Kate Winthrop. We lost horribly, as the adventures were overrun with monsters and the dice hated us. It was cool that my newly-acquired Elder Sign: The Log of the Persephone – Promotional Adventure Card came up, but it soon acquired a forbidding monster, and we never attempted it. We only had five Signs when the doom track maxed out as a result of "Ashcan" being devoured. Kate was only able to put up about nine hours of struggle after that -- certainly not enough to banish Shub-Niggurath.

I managed to come out the overall winner in our three sets of three games each playing Hive this weekend, although my girl won the final game. Both of us explored aggressive use of the beetle, and so we had some hilarious beetle battles, creating three- and four-high stacks while contesting around and onto the queens.

Board Game: Hive Pocket

The gaming highlight of my weekend was a play of Antike Duellum, thanks to We got together at an FLGS, and I think this was the first time C Hs got to play this game of his. We had some rules fumbling as we played through, but the whole went pretty smoothly. There's so very little randomness, that the thing quite nearly approaches being a perfect information game, and yet the historical civ-building and warfare theme is solid.

Board Game: Antike Duellum

He played Rome and I was Carthage. After nearly two hours we were tied up at 8/9 VP each. C Hs thought he had a fatal strike to make, but I had an event card that gave me a reprieve. Even so, it took another three turns or so until I had mustered forces for my reprisal. The game finished with my six galleys bearing down on Croton. (I had already sacked Rome.) Contra-historical win! I'm definitely interested in the Greeks v. Persians scenario too.

Weekly gameday at the club

Had my first game of Chaos in the Old World last week, a 5 player game (so we played with the Chaos in the Old World: The Horned Rat Expansion expansion). It's a nice game, nice mechanics, I ended up finishing 4th but 2-4 were very close in points. I'd like to play again. Finished the night with an 8 player game of The Resistance: Avalon with the Lady of the Lake. Arthur's side was up 4-1 but the Assassin did manage to guess who Merlin was for the win.

Saturday

The wife and I invited a couple of our friends this weekend for a day/night game session. We started with a small filler the wife got me for Xmas, La Guerre des Tuques, based on a Cult movie from the 80s for all Quebecers. Nice little game, it's essentially a snowfight between two teams, we played guys vs. gals, and smashed them We followed up with a game of Dixit, always fun for folks on the artsy side. I won the game, very close though, everyone enjoyed it quite a lot. We then played two games of Coloretto, I really wanted my wife to try it and it was a hit. Took the 1st game, finished last in the 2nd. After homemade pizzas, we played Flash Point: Fire Rescue using the Brownstone board from Flash Point: Fire Rescue – Urban Structures playing on Rookie level with advanced rules since it was the 1st for my friend's fiancée. Another hit, everyone enjoyed it.

Having just discovered this hobby earlier this year, we managed to snag one a couple of our friends over for game night this weekend. "Sweet!" I thought to myself, "All these games we've been playing with two we can finally enjoy with a larger group!"

Of course, to get them on board I had to entice them a bit: we'd play Euchre for a bit, then switch to another game soon after. "But," I added, "No pressure, of course. We can play them if you like." Rookie mistake.

I brought the games out after three hands of Euchre, and idly mentioned them at first, letting them know we could switch gears at any time. I figured maybe the box art would grab their attention. Another round of euchre and we tried bridging the topic again, asking them what kind of games they'd played. Crickets. The next round we explained each game in a bit more detail, and how much fun they were, and how far board games had come since Monopoly. Silence.

Well, long story short, we played seven rounds of Euchre and four great board games sat on the shelf unplayed for the remainder of the night. shake

Upon parting for the evening, we told them we'd love to have them back over for a rematch, but that next time they'll have to try something new. Hoping game night #2 is more successful!

Battlestar Galactica -- I decided to play as a "normal" character rather than as a CL for the first time in a long time. Pulled Roslin and was a Cylon for the entire game. Cain became a Cylon at midgame and we got the win on Population at 5.
Android: Netrunner -- 3x
Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization -- got a 4-player game in with one new player and two who'd played once before. Sadly, we didn't get to finish as the game ran long and the Meetup was ending.

Sunday
Taluva -- 4-player game with two newbies.
Pandemic -- the deck brutalized us. We'd eradicated blue but were wiped out on outbreaks before we could make any more progress.
BSG Express -- had never tried this before. It's interesting and works pretty well. I won as the only Cylon before the second set of Loyalty cards were distributed.

Earlier in the week, out group played Game 5 of our Risk Legacy campaign and I played a few games each of Android: Netrunner and A Game of Thrones: The Card Game.

Only got to play one game this weekend, thanks to most of my gaming being at a Tuesday night meetup.

I did break this out and it proved a hit, even for my sister with no attention span. This game was played once before, almost a year ago, and those that gave it a chance liked it and those that didn't (ie saw all the dice) thought it was boring without even getting it.

The game is awesome and does what it wants to do perfectly. I will bring this out a lot more, now that I know the rules much better.

Slow weekend. We only played one game of Homesteaders Can anyone tell me what a REALLY great high score for this game is? From searching through the forums, the 50's and 60's are normal scores. My son-in-law had 87 yesterday. He swears he is paying for all his workers and takes his debt when he needs to. None of us can even come close. The scores were 87, 55, 43 and 33 (yep, the 33 was mecry) I never did have enough trade chits to do what I wanted to do.

Eclipse x 1: First game with the expansion, losing effort, 43-41.

Courtier x 1: Not convinced of this as a two player, a single player and the programmed player are just not enough to stop a run away win if the cards break wrong. Loss.

Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization x 2 (wins): Three players.

Started the campaign with 4 friends. I took the role of overlord, and promptly got my ass kicked on the intro scenario. Pretty safe to bet that first mission is un-winnable for the OL if the heroes are even moderately competent.

I'm also kicking myself for buying the conversion kit and giving them some pretty good hero choices

Board Game: Star Wars: The Card Game

One play with the girlfriend. Our first. I was the Imperial Fleet, she was the Rebels. I got my ass kicked (starting to notice a trend here)

Board Game: The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game

One play with the girlfriend. Played through the first mission of the core set together, a first for us. Previous attempts dragged when she would have trouble remembering all the rules, or claim it was too late and we could finish it later. 3rd time's the charm.

It was a tough weekend for a number of reasons, but we managed a couple of games of this on Saturday evening. We hadn't played it since June last year, so it was about time it made it back into the rotation.

Of the big three carders (this, Race for the Galaxy and Glory to Rome) I find this to be the lightest and easiest to play. While I feel it lacks the depth of the other two, I must admit that I enjoyed this a lot more this weekend, maybe because, at 18 plays in total, I'm starting to enjoy the idea of actually building a city and watching how the cards work together, rather than just racing to twelve buildings.

In the end honours were even - I lost the first game 55-41 but sneaked home in the second 40-37, my 6-point buildings saving the day.

Happy gaming!

Was able to get 4 plays of Escape in Sunday night, including our first loss. We played with 4 adults which seemed easier than with 5 because of fewer number of gems and the 5 player games included 3 children age 9,11, and 12.

Our Sunday RPG group couldn't really meet, so two of those guys and myself got together for some board games.

Sentinels of the Multiverse - x2 - We played 2 games:

The Dreamer vs Chrono-Ranger, Ra, and Absolute Zero in Rook City.
&
Warlord Voss vs The Scholar, Omnitron-X, and Tempest in Atlantis.

Both games were a loss for the heroes. We managed to flip the dreamer and defeat 5 of the 6 required projections, and we got Warlord Voss down into the teens.

King of Tokyo - 2x - We played 2 games and the winner of both was our host.
