Already March, and I'm just now getting around to spending money on games. What's the world coming to?

Still, just as well, I've got credit cards to pay down, and last year was kind of over-budget.

Europa Universalis III: Heir to the Throne
Europa Universalis III: Divine Wind

I haven't been doing a lot of computer gaming recently, but GamersGate is having a 75% off sale on a few Paradox titles for the Ides of March, so I decided to round out the collection some.

And a little more from the Ides of March sale today. Normally, I have zero desire to go after the little DLC addons, especially ones that have no real game purpose, but it was a set of six of them for fifty cents, so what the hey.

And the Ides of March sale has a few different products today. I ended up getting the big package deal, since it had almost everything I wanted (The Republic isn't in it), and was just slightly more. The annoying thing is that it included a second copy of the first game. I don't think I can gift the components of a package deal, and the first copies I have are what my account is already tied to.

I've been following the blog of Black Diamond Games in Concord for some time (very enlightening on the world of hobby retail, and well worth following), and we went up to take a look at the store today.

Within its core focuses, it's very good, though it is less diverse than I would have thought. Anyway, I picked this up off the discount shelf. A few other things were tempting (like the Heart's Quest books.... ), but I've been wanting to get more of the BESM genre books anyway.

I bought this shortly after the announcement, and after a couple months of no communication on the matter, it went live yesterday.

Of course, I'm still working through the original story arc on my main, so the main thing I'm going to be seeing for a while is some inadvertent leveling up.

I was also hoping that the announced plans to make Cathars a playable race was going to be part of the expansion, but still no actual word on that (which was announced before the expansion was).

And heck, why not buy one of the tiny add-ons with virtual money while it's on sale? (I don't think I'll ever have enough of them for anything else.)

Captain's Log #37

Smudge special-ordered a Laura Croft mouseling miniature from Reaper Miniatures a little while ago, and it finally came in at the FLGS. It was pretty obvious that they'd just got a shipment in from their distributor, because there were a bunch of things there that weren't the last time we visited. I picked up Rivers to the Reich, which I would have preordered if I'd felt I had the money at the time, and the next Captain's Log for my collection. I'm only five years behind on them now....

I thought the idea behind Skylanders was kind of interesting, and the initial reviews indicated the game was actually nicely thought out. So, when I spotted the little-known PC version of the game for $20, I impulse bought it.

Of course, the spending hasn't stopped there. We've gotten a controller for the system so that me and Smudge could play it together (and there's pressure to get a second one). And I just got a three-pack with more figures. Between those, and a pair that I bought last December (on sale), just because they were neat figures, we have one of each element now.

We finally went through a couple old console game collections that had been donated to us a while back and figured out what to keep. Since that put such things on my mind, I stopped by a GameStop this last Sunday for some used game shopping.

Of course, they only really carry fairly current stuff, so only the DS section if of any use to us. I ended up picking up a couple things that were cartridge-only, so I also went over to Toys R Us to get a DS cartridge storage case for those and any others I pick up.

If this stays on my mind much longer, I may try to scour Amazon for good deals....

Okay, I'm doing a series of reviews on Paradox's games, I won't get to this one for ages, I haven't even looked at the last two expansions for III—why did I preorder this?

Well, I know I'll play it. And sooner rather than later; schedule be damned. Certainly, I have no doubts it'll be a good game.

....I'm off to play it now.

Okay, I keep hearing good things about the various Lego games, and GamersGate is having a sale on all of them right now. Somehow ( shake ) I've gotten enough bonus currency from them to basically get any of them for free, and I've been paying attention to co-op games lately.

So, what to get? After a little thinking, I decided to try the initial Batman game, since that should be new stories, rather than just playing through something that Smudge and I already know.

Mark is not only my regular FtF opponent, but my games benefactor. He showed up with this at our latest game day, still in shrink. We've played around with the system a little, and Mark wants to get further into it, and he figures if I have one of the titles myself, it'll be easier.

Can't argue with that logic....

And another endless wait courtesy of MMP is over with.

I'm still somewhat surprised that I ended up anticipating this so much. I mean, if I'd wanted I could have gotten the original modules when they were still in print in the late '90s, but I just wasn't interested in PTO infantry combat. (Naval combat is something else again. Need more of that in my gaming life.)

But, I guess I can't read people talk up the PTO in ASL for 15 years without catching the bug. And the completest in me probably has a hand in it.

So... now's the time to finally actually play a DTO scenario! modest

I was cleaning out my wallet, and came across a couple of old Barnes & Noble gift cards that I had gotten years ago. I have been slowly draining them of money, but mostly I just forget about them. Turns out one of them still had the full amount ($25) on it, so I decided to take care of them once and for all.

I've been in an RPG mood lately, so I decided to expand my GURPS collection. Powers wasn't my first choice, but it is high up my list, and was available for a little over $25, so there you go.

RuneQuest Sixth Edition
Midgard Campaign Setting

I've been meaning to start expanding my RPG library with some PDFs... as soon as I get an appropriate eReader. But RPGDriveThru had a Black Friday sale with a number of larger items for $5 each.

I've never really encountered RunQuest myself, but it was my roommate Baron's primary game way back when, and at least one of the wargaming group is a fan of it, so I grabbed the new 6th Ed version.

The other is a large setting book, which is the type of thing I enjoy, and I'm looking to see what is out there these days. I don't really know anything about it, but it seems to have done well for itself. Kinda wish it was for something more familiar to me than Pathfinder, but that's going to be rare these days....

Smudge and I have been Final Fantasy fans for some time, basically dating back to when I discovered the excellent Final Fantasy Tactics while doing testing for Virtual GameStation.

We never got into FF XI, though we kept an eye on it, and do have the first two disk soundtrack (very nice, by the way). So, when the rerelease of FF XIV hit a couple months ago to positive reviews we decided to give it a try at some point.

As it happened, there was a sale on the game the weekend before Christmas, so we got it for the price of a month's subscription (which it comes with).

So far, not bad. Not great, but not bad either. Very, very pretty. The only MMO that Smudge hasn't seen a host of modeling/animation goofs in.

Total for the year: $388.23

This is the cheapest year I've had since I started keeping track of my gaming spending (okay, it only beats 2011 by $15). I think ~$400 is somewhat representative of the past several years of spending, going back to when I got back into wargames.

But, I have really run out of time and space (I'm always out of money), so I expect my spending to slump now. I've got the reprint of C&C:A Expansions 2 & 3 on preorder, and that's about all I expect to get from GMT next year. I'll still be getting more ASL, however.

I'm not even sure what came out this last year that I'd like to get. I just haven't been paying as much attention lately.

Edit: I'd forgotten FF XIV. So tied with 2011.
