Pretty decent gaming weekend for us, for the first time in a long time we got 1 game in each evening.

Friday started with our first game of Long Shot. Bought this on clearance awhile back because my wife was wanting to take it to a conference for work that was themed around horse racing, but she didn't take it and we had just never bothered to learn it. Quick easy and fun, this could be a great party type game with a few folks getting together. The stickers on the horses are horrible and don't want to stay on, might have to get the paints out to paint the numbers on there permanently. First game was won by our daughter, she placed 2nd and 3rd with horses she had purchased and had nice sizable bets on both. I think she won by around $75.

Saturday evening we got our first play of Fresco in. I quite liked this one and my wife did as well. It's a nice introduction into the worker placement type games that have a bit more depth than Lords of Waterdeep, which was my first choice for the evening. My daughter didn't quite grasp everything right away and it took a couple rounds to get her to use her workers to paint, I think she still had Pastiche in her mind. But she did catch up to me and almost passed me at the end, we'll have to see if she requests it anytime soon.

Sunday saw a few plays of a PnP version of Dungeon Roll. It's really a neat take on Zombie Dice that has a bit more depth to it and a bit more fun. Gladly kickstarted this one for $15. Can't wait to get our hands on the actual game. Oh, and there are 38 hours left to pledge!

Other than that, no video games, no rpg'ing for me this weekend. I am looking forward to going to a local gaming meetup that happens once a month this evening for the first time, I'm trying to be a more "social" gamer, instead of keeping it within the family.

Last week, I played
* Guns of August, both the Mons and the Marne scenarios and the grand campaign scenario (up until turn 7). All of it solitaire. Nice game, chit-pull works especially well solitaire.
* Twilight struggle with Pluizebol. Her first time as US, and she creamed me! Very nice play on her side.
* 3 (or 4, I forget) more rounds in my on-going game of World War II: Barbarossa to Berlin with David. The Germans have stopped advancing and have in fact abandoned all their conquests in the Caucasus (because the critical Winter '43 has passed). Totaler Krieg has been called for. German trenches are placed in Kiev, Minsk and the spot just north of Odessa (I hope that was a mistake on his side). My Russian mechanized fronts have STILL not materialized, and I am getting kind of desperate here ...

Board Game: Macao
= 1 Play (NEW)

I was out on a business trip midweek, and immediately visit the FLGS last Saturday after coming back. I break out my copy of Macao for it's first ever play!

The game turned out to be a brain burner due to the advanced planning required. I managed to avoid any penalties, but the gals did not and some ended up with -9 VPs due to the punishment markers! I win with a score of 60 vs Julie's 49, Vangie's 39, and Janine's 32. This can be a painful game, much more so than Trajan!

Board Game: Lost Cities
= 1 Play

Shawn and me play a close game of this Friday evening. After 3 rounds the accumulated scores were:

Me: 26+26+24=76
Shawn: 15+23+32=70

Other games played during the week:

Board Game: Dominion
= 1 Play

I teach my daughter Sharlene this game. We play the First Game scenario. I manage to buy most of the provinces, but Shari collars most of the Duchies and in the end this was enough make her eke out a 41-39 win!

Just 3 plays for the entire week due to my busy schedule. I will be travelling again by land this coming week, but I hope to get more games in!

Board Game: Tobago
Friday night's only game was Tobago since we were looking for something short-ish before we had to head out and hadn't played it for a while. We both got into a situation where we had no valid cards a time or two but didn't want to blow an amulet on getting a new hand. Things seemed fairly close for most of the game but I managed to secure a win by hitting a string of high value cards on the last one.

We were late to start things on Saturday but eventually began with Archipelago, another we hadn't played for a while and I had been wanting to open up again. I thought I was doing pretty well when I managed to get two wonders built and some decent revenue; she ended up triggering one of her ending conditions by building enough towns. I thought my wonders would be enough to secure a win, but she ended up accidentally scoring on one of my victory conditions (she had 1 port) while I had nothing to meet the criteria. It was the next thing on my to-do list which would have earned me 2 points - enough to at least tie her and perhaps win the game in a tie-breaker. Argh!

Board Game: Star Trek: Fleet Captains
We decided that we'd continue the theme of playing things we haven't played for a while and took out Star Trek: Fleet Captains. We had only played it once before but were rather unimpressed by the whole thing despite hearing so many people gush about how great the game is. Well, we played our second game and were rather glad when I finally won. Neither of us are still overly impressed by the game; I just don't get all of the excitement about this one. What's so great about it? I'm just not feeling it. If anyone can tell us what's so freaking great about it and makes it so fun, please let me know in a reply to this item - we both want to like it but just can't find a reason to.

Board Game: Puerto Rico (with two expansions)
Puerto Rico was our last game for Saturday night. Once again I thought I was doing okay but things stuttered occasionally. I had a decent amount of VP chips but was floored when I looked over and realised she had way more than I did. I struggled to catch up but by then it was too late; I couldn't get anything going again and she steamrolled me by 21 points. It seems like every time we play, she somehow destroys me with shipping, even when I'm doing fairly well with it; she's just always one step ahead on that one.

Board Game: Dominant Species
Dominant Species was the game of choice for Sunday. We had always played it with one person controlling one animal each and decided to try a few more to up the competition between animals. We tried 3 each but quickly found that it was just too much to juggle after two turns, so we decided to restart with two animals each. Things were still a little tricky but were at least more manageable. My mammals struggled to keep up for a while and eventually passed by birds thanks to somewhat poor planning on my part. Her reptiles were really far in the lead while her insects lagged behind but continued to nip at the heels of whatever I had in last place each turn. Mammals eventually came close to catching reptiles and my birds finally got enough traction to outpace the insects, snatching me the victory.

Got my first played of this one in. It was a 2 player game with my wife. I really enjoyed it (and my wife did not hate it!) so that is good. We did a few things wrong, but overall the game plays smoothly and it is fun.

I also played:

Friday night: 2 player game of Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar with my wife. I hard charged the sciences for the first 3/4 of the game and got to the top on 3 of the 4 tracks, scoring the Monument that gives points for maxing sciences (33 for 3 of them). In the last leg of the game I concentraded on the Crystal skulls and managed to get 4 of the earlier spots on Chichen Itza scored by games end. This resulted in my highest score to date fo 79. Still not sure how some people are scroing 100+.

Saturday: A trip to my FLGS where I played Tammany Hall. A buddy of mine went on tilt when I slandered him at the end of year 12 and cost him the mayorship for the 3rd term. We ended up tearing each other apart in the 4th term and another player coasted to a ridiculously easy victory. After that, we played 4 player Battlestar with the Pegasus board. I ended up having a Cylon loyalty card handed to me by the sympathizor (who was alos a cylon since we had no reds at Kobol. We had the humans against the ropes with 1 morale and 4 population when the humans used Kains OPG to win the game. I later found out the her OPG is only usable at distance 6 or less, so I will count this one a moral victory for the Cylons.

Played a second (late night) game of BSG at a friends house later that night. We got a single boarder fairly early and took about 12 shots at it (including some +2's) but were unable to hit it and once we had a declared Cylon, she just activated the boarders until we lost. Amazingly, we were already at distance 8 by the time the boarders finally took us down (thanks to a distance 4 jump shortly after Kobol).

Well, as I suspected Lindy and I are playing a lot of Seasons. She loves it and will hardly play anything else these days. We played it Friday night, 2 times on Saturday and once on Sunday. We have played 11 times now.

I also went over to my mom's on Friday for a bit and played 4 games of Mexican Train with her.

Saturday I went into town and played 2 games of Crib with a friend there.

Sunday, with only one game of Seasons, left me feeling very game deprived. To compensate I played one solo game of Roll Through the Ages and 2 games of solitaire with cards.

11 games played (including one game of Le Boomb to determine starting player for Seasons.

3 games played this Saturday:
Risk: Star Wars – The Clone Wars Edition was first out. It followed the basic script, as the Republic (me/Wife) spread out in the early stages forcing the Separatists (two friends) to call Order 66 on their 7th turn with only a 37.5% chance of converting. (A card was played to stop Darth Sidious from moving forward once). Anyway, a fatal mistake by our friends left a short path open to Darth Sidious, which my wife could capitalize on. Our friends were so focused on attacks that they failed to recognize how to defend properly.

At this point friend #2 left and we continued with only 3 players:
Witch's Brew
An old classic that hadn't seen play in 3+ years! Our friend who have a knack for playing new games won this one handily 42/31/31

And finally we played 2 hands of Mahjong

Board Game: Thunderstone Advance: Towers of Ruin
Broke this game out for the first time last night. Used the suggested starting layout of bad guys, villagers, etc.

I had fun, but the game took way too long. Obviously it was our first time, so things should speed up in future plays, but I am not sure how much it will reduce from the 3 hour marathon we had.

So far the only drawback was what we perceived as very little interaction between the two players. Outside of curse cards, we didn't mess with each other really at all.

This could easily be fixed in the future with different cards and / or more experience playing the game. But for now that was the major drawback that stood out for us.

Final score of the 3 hour game was 44 - 37. The final boss was worth 5 points, making killing him have a real impact on who won the game. That is good game design.

Not a great gaming weekend in terms of volume, but certainly terrific in content.

Played Bora Bora for my second time against two experienced euro players who were seeing it for the first time.

I very much enjoy this game, and had a good time playing and teaching it. Can't wait to try it again.

My wife humored me by playing 3 games of 2-player Dominion. (She's not a fan of 2-player Dominion but likes 3-5 player.) All expansions, random selection. She won the first 2 games by 3 points and 5 points. I won the 3rd game in a blowout.

I played one game of Star Wars: Epic Duels with my wife, her mom, and her uncle. My son picked Darth Maul for me and Vader for my mother-in-law. My uncle chose Anakin and Obi-Wan for my wife and him. My son "played" with us for maybe 10 minutes and then took off to play with other toys. After a lot of hiding behind battle droids and storm troopers, the Sith lords made their move. I took out Obi Wan with a bunch of Sith Speed cards. Vader took out Anakin (appropriately) with an All Too Easy.

Played with my son:

Tyrannosaurus Rex

On a somewhat regular basis, I invite people from the MMA gym at which I train to come over and watch a ppv UFC event. I usually get a good mix of ages from both genders.

Cue my insidious secretive plan to convert them to gamers. devil

I tend to "accidentally" leave a game with lots of eye candy set up on a card table in the dining room to grab attention. This weekend it was X-Wing.

I played one game to demo it then turned it over to them. I also introduced several of them to The Adventurers: The Temple of Chac. When they are sufficiently hooked, the next step will be to introduce them to BGG.

Summary: I got some people interested in gaming and GSP defeated Diaz. Great weekend!

I had a fun games night on Friday and some solo gaming on Sunday night.

Friday:

Hanabi
What a great little cooperative game this is. It is so unique and a good workout for the brain. I knew it was going to be interesting after reading the rules, but it surpassed my expectations. I predict it will see a ton of play time in the future.

Lords of Vegas
This seems to be getting played almost every other weekend, as it is frequently requested by some members of my game group. It is always a good time and we had a very competitive game that came down to a tiebreaker at the end.

1812: The Invasion of Canada
We finished the night with a game of 1812, and as usual it was fun and competitive the whole way through.

Sunday:

Warriors of God: The Wars of England & France, 1135-1453
I sat down with the rulebook and began playing through the game solo. I wasn't able to play it through to the end as I didn't start until 9 PM, but I definitely enjoyed it. I'm going to give it another go tonight. Perhaps I'm a solo-wargamer after all.

Five plays of five different games this weekend.

On Friday Blue Moon City got yet another play in the current rotation, my SO drawing a double contribution out of nowhere at the end of the game to snatch victory 12-11. Apart from one game where I fouled up, all our plays of BMC have had scorelines of 12-11 or 12-10, making it always a really tight and stressful experience. I now have all four expansion tiles, and the larger board makes things interesting as the central tiles get completed and you need to move further away from the obelisk to achieve your aims, although the Meeting Hall helps in this regard.

While I was adding to score to the BGG database I noticed the absurd price this game is now commanding on Amazon. It is a great game (I think), but really? I think I bought mine for £20 a couple of years ago, but would never sell it. It remains one of my favourites.

One play of Mystery Rummy: Jack the Ripper, which is getting a lot of love at the moment, far more than when we first bought it, now up to 11 plays this year alone, with only 7 in '11 and '12 combined. The first round was a shocker for me, as my SO romped into a 56 to -6 (yes, that's minus 6) lead, but I managed to claw back so that we finished 112-109 to her. Had she not been lucky with her blind guess during the last round's voting I would have won, but them's the shakes.

A quick game of Backgammon to finish off Friday's play saw me extend my losing run to 7 games in a row. Again, this game is getting a decent amount of play at the moment. No more needs to be said.

On Sunday we dug out Orient Express for the first time in a while. While we both managed to work out who had committed the crime, I made my decision a station earlier. However, even though my SO got there one stop later, she had rolled a red number, which meant that the clue stayed face-down, and the game is scored by face-up clues, with no provision I could find for a tie-break. In the end we agreed it was a draw, but I was left with the moral victory and again cursing my SO's absurd ability to roll dice well.

We finished the weekend with a game of San Juan. This was an epic tussle, and we are both really getting into this game now. My SO won 53-45, her Palace eking out the 10 extra points needed to ease home, while I had all three monuments and the Triumphal Arch. It equalled my highest ever score, so I am pretty happy with that.

The decision to limit our TV time (even though we only watch DVDs) has had an immediate impact on the amount of gaming we do. Now I just need to persuade my other half to let me get Assyria to the table again...

Happy gaming!

I started the weekend with some solo plays of WoA. Played adventure 6 which I got through after 4 hours. The campaign got easier as I went along. The Second and Third boss was easier then the first. Although the 3rd phase did give me a little more trouble then the 2nd phase due to some really bad rolls.

Board Game: Seven Dragons

On Sunday I started the day playing some Seven Dragons with my 8 year old. He likes the game until the very end when he loses. laugh

Board Game: Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small

I ended the weekend with some All Creatures Big and Small. My wife and I played with the expansion for the first time. We really like using the new buildings. Having 4 different buildings per game adds replay and keeps the game interesting.

Friday
I received The Stars Are Right as a gift last week, and got to play it for the first time on Friday evening. It turned out to be awfully difficult for for my daughter; I don't think she'll be up for this one in the future. I liked it, though, and I'm trying to decide which of my friends would best enjoy it.
Board Game: The Stars Are Right

Saturday
Three good games of Hive. We experimented with Hive: The Pillbug (using Ladybugs to stand in for the Pillbugs). I won that game, and then we went back to our standard play with base bugs, Mosquitoes and Ladybugs. We had a bitchin' beetle battle piled on my Queen, and I won just the same. Then I lost the third game.

Sunday
Won a three-player game of Forbidden Island pretty comfortably at Normal level. Each player retrieved at least one treasure, and all used their abilities.

In a three-handed game of Cthulhu Gloom the Village of Innsmouth won by force of population, recruiting guests and killing them off. Even with two characters still living, the Innsmouthers had buried Phthiya I'yi, Barnabas Marsh, Zadok Allen, and Brown Jenkin, along with having won Nyarlathotep.

I won two games of Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game pitting my Suck My Kiss tattooed cultists and tentacled seductresses against Goat's Bark at the Moon.

Then the evening continued with two five-handed games of Cthulhu Fluxx, both of which succumbed to Inevitable Doom. In the first, the Secret Cultist produced a winner anyhow. But not in the second.

And we concluded with the first game of Aquarius I had played in a long while, and the first time I had ever played it with five players.

We were busy on Saturday, but on Sunday we had a quiet day at home, which meant several hands of Magic the Gathering with my husband while the kids were playing, followed by an afternoon gaming session with my two boys (5 and 3) - Ubongo, LEGO Create It, Heroica Fortaan (making our own map) and FITS. The youngest couldn't join in FITS, but did with the rest.

Got my first playthrough of Thunderstone Advance in with the wife on Saturday evening.

We really enjoyed it, even though we missed a rule or two which will change things a bit the next time we play (what, you mean you have to attack a monster if you go to the dungeon?).

It definitely goes into the personal collection, although that means I'm going to have to order another copy for Ravenwood's library.

RPG Item: Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Beginner Box

We also took Sunday afternoon to run the wife and my girls through the Pathfinder Beginner's Box. It was my first time DMing in, oh, about twenty years or so. Once I shook the rust off, things went fairly well.

The eight year old really enjoyed herself, particularly since she got to stand toe to toe with (a young) dragon.

The eleven year old is taking this RPG stuff pretty seriously, and has started creating her own character, sketch and all. Hopefully this means there will be more Pathfinder sessions in coming weekends!

Been wanting to play this for so long -
finally started my video coverage of it.

Also just (phew!) got my KS copy of Tammany Hall,
and shot off a two player (again seems to work ok as written
for three) game of it with the wife.
Looking forward to vidding it - though it's a simpler game than
I hoped.

Saturday
1x - Battlestar Galactica - New
1x - Railways of the World

We had over 40 people (24+ adults, 16+ kids, lost count along the way) at our monthly Game Night this past Saturday. At my table we finally got Battlestar Galactica out of the box! We had six newbies. A couple of us actually read the rules and watched a few videos online prior to familiarize ourselves with a working concept of the game.

The end result was a blast. We had one cylon in the first round who waited until early in the second round (Sleeper phase?) to reveal themselves. It was one of two guys I never suspected. I had been suspected by one guy who checked my loyalty card only to be disappointed.

After the second set of loyalty cards were distributed I learned I was a cylon and I opted to stay covert to try and do damage behind the scenes while the revealed cylon took most of the attention.

In the end I was able to sabotage a skill check to lose our last population and win the game and ultimately revealing myself as the second cylon. Most people said they thought I was but were not sure how to respond.

We learned a lot of things, got a few things wrong, etc. which may be typical for a first game, especially amongst all newbies but everyone had fun and it will definitely see more table time.

After our game others were saying good byes and heading out, but those at the Railways of the World table were really dragging behind. They looked like they were just getting started... after 3 hours! So I was asked to help some of the players, all but one was a newbie to the game who struggled to effectively teach, guide, and play at the same time. It didn't help that they had a terrible cube distribution on the map. One couple started hinting they were losing interest and ready to go home, so I offered for myself and another guy to take their place.

We jumped in and the game picked up. We were the two cabooses in the game but quickly started shaking some things up and causing some excitement. It wasn't enough to pull off a win, we still finished as the two last finishers but others saw some things we were doing and we were able to point out some things to them so they would feel better about the game and how they were doing in the game to salvage it.

Another great, yet gone too fast montly Game Night. Just so many good games, great friends, and not enough time.

meeple Keep playing...

Friday CABS meeting this week with me trying to fit in game commitments around other stuff. First up was a rematch of the first scenario in the Commands & Colors: Napoleonics Expansion #2 – The Russian Army. Last weeks match was a tight affair, this one, not so much. My Russian Light Infantry got steamrolled in a Bayonet Charge by the French Line fairly early in the game. Instant four Banners for my opponent, and a gaping hole in the center of my line. I held on for awhile, but lost 7 - 4.

Next was my last match in this round of the CABS Android: Netrunner league. I was going against the league leader, and I had a chance to move into first with a big win. It wasn't to be, however. We split the match dead even, with our Runners winning and us tying on overall Agenda points. I've come to understand that I'm an awful Corporation player, at least once I got rid of the tag'n'bag approach.

Finally, with my "have to play" games out of the way, I was able to start running demo games of Dungeon Roll. Luckily enough for me, I had some other CABbies interested in the game enough to teach and play several games before I got started. Dungeon Roll is fairly easy to teach, easy to play, and fits perfectly as a filler game. You've got to like dice games, of course, and if you do, Dungeon Roll can be great fun.

Next up was a game I just love, Sentinels of the Multiverse. Five player game with one new player. We took on Grand Warlord Voss in the Tomb of Anubis. Somehow, Tempest kept up the torrents of cleansing rain to keep the heroes going in the face of multiple Forced Deployments. Great fun as always.

I finished up the night with the hottest game at CABS lately, Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar. You'll see multiple games of this going on at once. Thanks to the game donation from Rio Grande, many, many CABbies have been able to play this game. Many of them, like I did, then go out and get a copy for themselves. If you're headed to Origins this year, this is just one of the many new Rio Grande games in the library for you to try at the convention.
