An "in perpetuity" list of TRS-80 Model I/III games beaten by VGG members (the year in the title will be changed annually, as this is expected to be a low traffic, easy-loading geeklist).

When you determine that you have "beaten" a TRS-80 game, add it as an entry on this list. Your entry should describe your accomplishment (in what manner was the game beaten - this should not involve a bat!) and provide a brief description of the game and your experience with it. Also note if you beat the game on original hardware or via an emulator.

Heck, if you even PLAYED a TRS-80 game this year then please add it to the list as well, along with the information requested above!

EDIT: Updated year in title. Come on, play a TRS-80 game this year and share your experience here!

Video Game: Missile Attack

The game that served as the inspiration for this list!

(Additional inspiration was provided by my web browser, which takes extended lunch breaks when I try to access long geeklists filled with large images - exactly what happened when I went to add this game to the global 2013 games beaten list...)

Missile Attack is a Missile Command clone for the TRS-80. It features fast action gameplay. You have two ABM missile bases with which to defend three cities. Incoming ICBMs sometimes split into MIRVs as in the arcade game. However, other features of the arcade version are absent: you don't seem to be able to earn replacement cities and there are no bombers or satellites - just wave after wave of incoming missiles.

Video Game: Missile Attack

I played Missile Attack on David Keil's TRS-80 Model III emulator for MS-DOS (running in DOS Box) to gather screen shots for the VGG entry. I beat the game during the third play of the screenshot session. During the first two games I quickly ran out of ABMs and lost my cities. This was mainly due to trying to set up interesting screenshots by launching strings of ABMs.

A surprisingly short time later (after generating hundreds of "not very usable" screenshots) a screen came up stating simply "You made it through the war. Nice shooting!" Sure, things had sped up a bit in the final levels - but had I really been playing that long? (No I hadn't - see the stats below.)

Video Game: Missile Attack

Despite the excellent gameplay, Missile Attack does strike me as a bit unfinished - particularly for a product from Adventure International and Cornsoft. The game lacks many features commonly found in arcade style games for the TRS-80 (such as the Big Five Software classics). There is no multi-player hot seat option, no high scores screen and no in-game instructions. Indeed, there is not even a start button! Play starts automatically after the title screen has displayed for a brief period of time.

The short overall play time and lack of a high scores feature keep Missile Attack from attaining classic status. A great effort that "could have been a contender" - but still worthy of a few plays now and again.

Video Game: Missile Attack

Date beaten: 10 APR 2013
Final score: 14,625
Total play time: Around ten minutes (!) based on the time stamps on my screenshots - that's just getting warmed up in any other port of Missile Command!

Video Game: Blitzkrieg (TRS-80)

Another "surprise" that came up while "playing for screenshots."

Blitzkrieg may be a twist on Activision's Kaboom. Bombs rain down from the top of the screen in increasing numbers, but instead of trying to catch them you must dodge them. The game starts out with a yawn inducing stretch where there are only a few bombs on the screen at once and you only occasionally need to move your man out of the way.

Video Game: Blitzkrieg (TRS-80)

The number of bombs on the screen gradually increases until the game reaches its max. There are no levels or breaks, just a continual ramping up of the difficulty. Your challenge is to survive the bombing onslaught with just three lives.

Video Game: Blitzkrieg (TRS-80)

The satisfaction of achieving victory is diminished by the fact that the total play time necessary to do so is something short of two minutes. That strikes me as "level one", not "game over." But then you won't find Blitzkrieg on anyone's Greatest Hits list...

Video Game: Blitzkrieg (TRS-80)

Date beaten: 18 APR 2013
Final score: N/A
Total play time: Between one and two minutes based on the time stamps on my screenshots.
