Pretty short weekend of gaming since we were out of town for a wedding. I took a couple games with me but we never found time to break them out and play.

Got in a couple races in Hot Rod Creeps with my daughter on Sunday, could be a good card based racing game, but it does seem to suffer from the "the more the merrier" disease.

Also played a couple quick games of Biblios. We quite enjoyed this one and it will probably stick around for quite awhile, glad I caved and picked it up.

Started playing a bit of SimCity (2013) as well this weekend but not really enough to get too deep into it!

Hope everyone has a great week!

We're still moving small bits of my stuff over to her place and rearranging things but we managed to play a little bit over the weekend.

Board Game: Pandemic
Our game of choice for Friday night was Pandemic since my replacement board for the new edition arrived the other day. Our first game was a complete disaster; an Epidemic on my first card draw which triggered a chain outbreak. By the end of her third turn, the third series of chain outbreaks happened and ended the game. Game two was going great! We managed to get red eradicated very early in the game and black cured soon after. Blue was starting to add up but I kept pulling cubes off to keep it under control while she cured yellow. I drew my cards pulling two blue which gave me enough to cure it on my next turn and win. Her infection phase, however, was less than favourable. One blue cube gets added which causes 3 outbreaks leaving us with one too few cubes to fill the necessary spots, instantly losing the game. It nearly made us cry to know that we had lost immediately before I could cure the disease that destroyed us with a mere 2 moves.

Board Game: Carcassonne
On Sunday we decided to play Carcassonne (with a bunch of the expansions thrown in) as we wanted something long but light. We were constantly passing each other on the scoring track until she finally outpaced me. When the last tile I was placed, I had 3 farmers touching a fair number of finished cities that scored me a bunch of points and put me ahead of her. Unfortunately for me, I forgot that we still had to score the commodities tokens; we were tied for barrels and she was the only one with wheat and cloth which gave her back her lead and beat me by about 15 points.

We pulled an all nighter.

We started with

Board Game: Dominant Species

Followed by

Board Game: Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization

and then ended with

Board Game: Diplomacy

We had 4 players and at least one player in every game had not played before so we had to teach each one.

All told we played from 1:30pm on Saturday afternoon until 9am on Sunday morning! It was awesome fun!

We started off the weekend's gaming with a play of Elder Sign in which we successfully kept Yig at bay:

Board Game: Elder Sign
Board Game: Elder Sign

Amanda Sharpe ran close to the edge, risking devouring with a low stamina for much of the game. Joe Diamond headed into The Abyss to confront a Dark Young and win the final Elder Sign when the doom track was only at 5.

We played a couple of games of Hive. The second one was especially fine, as there was a moment well into the game where the two queens were connected by a single sinuous line of ten pieces. That was cool.

We also played a couple of games of Jenga. In the second of these, the tower was a variant of my daughter's design, with alternating tiers of three and four blocks.

Board Game: Jenga

On Saturday, the mailman brought Martian Dice, which I had bought to round out a gift order. I immediately improved the game by adding tokens for scoring and a felt lining for the dice cup.

Board Game: Martian Dice
Board Game: Martian Dice

Over the course of the weekend, I played four games of Martian Dice. I like its subtle pacifism ... life is good if you can get through a turn without tanks and death rays.

In a completely different vein, I got to play some Chess on Saturday evening, which was nice. My opponent was even rustier than me, and I made short work of him.

Board Game: Chess
Board Game: Forbidden Island

The weekend saw two games of Forbidden Island. First, with my daughter, we played the Volcano Island Variant layout at Normal difficulty. We lost with the meter on 5, when the last palace and last temple were destroyed, eliminating our chances for the Cup and the Stone. Playing again later with a couple of friends who were new to the game, we lost much more quickly. Both Garden tiles were destroyed, so goodbye to the Statue of the Winds.

Finally, I had my usual Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game meetup with Br. Goat. He staunchly stayed with his monofaction Peeping Yog deck all evening, but I rotated through three decks, each of which punished him differently. It was the debut of my Shub-monofaction deck The All-Mother's Cravings. In two games, this deck showed itself capable of easily bringing into play cost-5 heavy hitters, with no domains built above 3. (Thanks to One of the Thousand, Priestess of Bubastis, and Seeker of the Mysteries, along with Arthur Todd, who was sacrificed to bring The Lord of the Woods into play in both games.)

Then it was time for my Carcosan Air Force deck of government agents and byakhee. Do not trifle with Paul LeMond when he has a shotgun! CAF used G-AAMX for the first time, thinking it wouldn't be much of a muchness, but it probably made a decent difference by burying some of Yog's more threatening cards. (Hard to know, though.) In our fourth and final game, Phantasmagistry had a Zoogeriffic time of it.

Nice weekend of gaming, starting with a first-time play of Odin's Ravens with my girlfriend. We really enjoyed it, and immediately played another. She trounced me twice, but I really liked the game, and expect it to get many more plays to come. This is OOP, but a new version has been kickstarted. I prefer the original art, so I bought a used version here on the Marketplace, but when this comes back out, I think it could be a nice success.

Next, we went to a friend's house for an evening of games where we played Love Letter.

Board Game: Love Letter

I have played this many times with my son as a two player game, but this was my first four player attempt. The other three had never played before. It was different as a four player, but I honestly like both equally. Again, this was a huge hit, and we played multiple 4 round games of which I won zero.

Finally, I got a chance to play Biblios for the first time.

Board Game: Biblios

I really wasn't sure how this game would go over with the group, since we've previously played games with a more obvious thematic element. I was really pleasantly surprised. Everyone really enjoyed it. After the first game, I honestly expected everyone to be done, but they asked for a second game right away. I lost both. Miserably. The fact that I still enjoyed myself immensely shows what a great game this is. I feel like I need a few more games to get a handle on some of the strategies in this subtly deep game. The basic rules and mechanisms are so simple, that I didn't really plan out my plays very well. I'm starting to realize some things I could have done differently, and I'm already anticipating a chance to try again.

It wasn't until I wrote this that I realized that I didn't win a single game this weekend. In all of these games, I was "teaching" it. I think that I can be competitive in some areas, but I'm coming to realize that with the people I play with, I really just like the process of playing. I don't need to win to have a good time.

I did not play much this weekend, mainly played Agricola: All creatures Big and small with my wife. I thought for sure I would win as I had the homeworkshop and building and filling stalls pretty good. I made a few miscalculations and my wife ended up winning by two points. For some reason I was thinking I only needed 3 cows and horses to avoid the -3 points. Should have just left them alone a got more pigs and sheep instead.

Board Game: Clash of Cultures

I also set up and ran through a game of Clash of Cultures by myself in preparation for game night this Saturday. Making sure I have all the little rules down so I can explain the game without missing anything important. I sent out links to the instructional video so if I do miss something major none of the players can be to upset next week, at least not with me if they did not do the homework.

Friday
1x - Alhambra

I took a half day to spend some extra time with my wife for her birthday. We started things off with a game of Alhambra over coffee. This was the first time we played with the official 2p variant rules. My wife won convincingly. The 2p variant is definitely a shorter, lower scoring game than the way we had been playing it.

Saturday - Game Night
2x - Pandemic

Board Game: Pandemic

We had 15 adults and who knows how many kids at our monthly hosted Game
Night. We had a 6p game of Railways of the World in one room, a 4p game of Castles of Burgundy in the dining room, and I was teaching/supporting a 4p game of Pandemic in the Kitchen while the kids were playing kickball outside, the Wii, or Playstation downstairs.

The four players I was introducing Pandemic to were three regulars who are still relatively new gamers and a newbie. It was also the first time I was involved in a game of Pandemic with more than 2p so I was interested in seeing how it would play out. We played with 4 Epidemic
cards.

I have to say it was one of the most engaging and fun games I've ever
witnessed and everyone was talking about it still on Sunday. They ended up losing due to too many outbreaks. Had we avoided that last outbreak we would have ended up being one Player Card in the draw deck short to get to the player with the card set for the last cure. Down to the wire. Two of the players had to leave so I jumped in and we played a 3p game with 5 Epidemic cards and this time won thanks to finding our first cure in the first round.

Sunday
1x - Kingsburg

My oldest was upset that she didn't get to play a game at Game Night (wanted to play Battlestar Galactica) so asked if I'd play a game with her after lunch and before she finished her homework. She chose Kingsburg. I was the Carpenter and she the Miner. I quickly got out to a big lead and in the last two years she was quickly closing the gap and pulling up even before the last battle. She felt comfortable because she had the military advantage, however she did not realize I had a building which allowed me to receive 1 VP for every 2 resources at the end of the game which was the deciding factor.

meeple Keep playing...

Lindy and I have really been enjoying Carson City. We have played 6 times now, 2 this past weekend. So far we have not tried the river side of the board.

I also played Timbuktu with Lindy on Saturday and Mexica with her on Sunday, both games that had not been played in awhile. I am thinking they would both benefit from at least one more play each since when we have not played a game in awhile the first play is like re-learning the thing and it really requires a second play to truly enjoy it. Lindy takes after her Dad a little too much and forgets nearly as bad as I do.

I also tried a solo game of Puerto Rico on Sunday. I really should have another go of this as well so it would get a little more established in my head as a solo game.

5 games this weekend.

The wife and I played 4 games of Dominion with all expansions. This was pretty unusual because she almost never wants to play Dominion with just 2 players. She ended up winning all 4 games, though 2 of them were by just 1 point.

We played 3 games of 10 Days in the USA, and she won 2 out of 3.

We played 1 game of San Juan, and I won 35-25, thanks in part to starting the game with a Guild Hall. I finished with 4 tobaccos and 2 indigos.

We played 1 game of Zooloretto, with my son acting as my "assistant". Basically, he pulled the tiles for me and placed them in whatever truck he felt like. Sometimes he listened to me, sometimes he didn't. He was also in charge of putting the animals in the zoo. The wife and I tied 26-26, with 1 coin each. Per the rule book's recommendation, we "rejoice(d) in the shared victory!"

My son and I played 1 game of Sorry!. He had a very improbable win, thanks to 2 Sorry! cards late in the game, with my 2 pawns parked right in front of his safety zone.

The son and I also went to the FLGS to pick up Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game and some expansion ships, after I convinced my sister to a "I'll pick out my birthday gift, and you pay for it" deal. (Plug: Thanks to Rivendell Games for excellent customer service and a good selection of games in stock.)

My wife and I learned Android: Netrunner, which is brand new for us. 3 plays. I love this, she likes it better than Race for the Galaxy (yes, a different kind of game), so that's good. Looking forward to exploring this a lot more.

Also, one play of Suburbia, also new for her (I'd previously played once).

Sunday - No RPGs & that means board games! Two other guys and myself got together for some games.

Summoner Wars - 1x - While waiting for our 3rd player, I knocked out a Mercenaries (me) vs Cloaks game. I lost.

Guilds of Cadwallon - 2x - This is a new one that I got in the mail on Friday. I read the rules and played a game with just the base game (no kickstarter extras) and we played on a 3x3 board. This is an intersting game and out of the box it plays very quickly (15-20m tops). I think it might work out to expand into the kickstarter bonus cards to get a longer game.

The End of the Triumvirate - 1x - I taught this one to the two other guys and I fear that I failed to explain this one properly and it went over like a lead balloon and ended in a military victory for me. I was told it would be given a second chance (I had been bringing it around for months), but I think one guys is out for future plays.

Eminent Domain - 1x - One guy and I taught the third player this one and this play was fantastic. I like this game, but this play turned out great. Probably the best finish yet. It was a 3 way tie, 36-36-36. The tie breaker (remaining resources and fighters in each players empire) gave the victory to the new guy (5 fighters to my 3 fighters and the other guy's one resource). Believe it or not, Produce/Trade is the card that ran out. I think that is a first for me.

A fantastic end to the evening.

My wife asked me a few days ago if I still had this one in my collection or if I traded it, but a quick scan revealed it under a thick layer of dust. Turns out we hadn't played it since 2005!

Anyway, we played a single round in which I made a fool of myself playing the fellowship.

Not a heavy duty game weekend. This is a better game than I thought it would be. It's a great 'dessert' game.

Then it was time to bust out a game I bought from a geek auction some time ago:

Board Game: Bombay

This was just too short for two players. I think we need to add at least 2 more rounds next time. Lots of fun though.

And finally,

Board Game: Carcassonne Big Box 3

This game really captures what playing is all about. Always love it.

I got a few games in for the first time in months.

Friday

Ticket to Ride I won this game of 4 players, 2 of them new.

Escape: The Curse of the Temple Played 3 games of this with 4 players, 2 of them new. Won the first game before the 7 minute mark, I got out of the temple on the second game before the doors closed for the first time, we had never had such quick wins before. For the third game we added curses, but still won fairly easily.

Saturday

Lost Temple. First game, I think I will like it more than Citadels because the district building seems tacked on, while this has a neat race mechanic. Came very close to winning.

Watched/supervised a game of new people playing Escape.

We had a group of four together for games on Saturday night. We played three different games including:

Escape: The Curse of the Temple x3
We played using curses/treasures for the first time and won once and lost twice. This game is always fun, but I fear it's starting to lose a bit of its lustre. Regardless, it will always be a great gateway game.

Kemet
This was the second time I played Kemet and it was a very competitive game where everybody was within reach of victory. In that sense, the endgame seemed fairly reminiscent of it's spiritual successor, Cyclades.

Tumblin-Dice (x2 - games to 201 points)
By the end of the night the booze was flowing quite heavily, which meant it was time to roll some dice. Always a hit, Tumblin' Dice once again did not disappoint.

I manage to get some Sunday FLGS action last weekend after coming back from a business trip!

Board Game: Eclipse: Rise of the Ancients
= 1 Play (NEW)

Kent and I play a 2P game, but this time I finally get to use some of the modules from the Eclipse: Rise of the Ancients expansion for the first time. We used the Rare Technologies, Developments, and Wormhole options. In addition, Kent selected to use the Magellan Race from the expansion (ancient explorers who have the cool ability to have their colony ships get resources), while I decided to use the Hydrans (who excel in science). We both explored early, but I got hemmed in really bad by a lot of ancients and this enabled Kent to build up his fleet earlier.

External image

Hemmed in by ancients!

I eventually managed to overcome the ancients, but since Kent had a head start he then managed to take out the Center with his dreadnoughts, and ended up right up the front of my hexes. I built cheap interceptors and sent them into the center to pin down Kent, and this worked for just a turn. Knowing I was just delaying the inevitable I abandoned my systems and worked my way to the sides in order to explore more hexes, knowing that Kent would not manage to wipe out all my hexes. I was right as despite Kent having neutron bombs I managed to have keep 2 hexes on the last turn.

External image

Kent(grey) cuts right through my empire (blue)!

In the end Kent's huge advantage in hexes wins out, as he gets a total score of 33 (Reputation from combat 8 Hexes 17 Discovery tiles 3 Science 5) versus my 23 (Reputation 10 Hexes 3 Discovery 6 Science 4), and he revels in his first victory in Eclipse (he also says he likes the Magellans a LOT!).

Board Game: Cosmic Encounter: Cosmic Incursion
= 1 Play (NEW)

Kent then wanted to try this out, and I manage to convince the 2 gals to join in this game, as they didn't like the first play of this before. I also bring out the new aliens plus the Rewards deck from the Cosmic Encounter: Cosmic Incursion expansion for the first time. We again play with the shorter game variant (4 planets instead of 5). Vangie got first blood and also an early lead, and I also negotiated with her and exchanged colonies, so she was up 2 with me behind at 1. However, Kent managed to evict her ships from his planet, and allying with Julie got themselves to score and we all end up with 1 colony each. Later on Kent, Julie and I get up to a score of 3 to Vangie's 2. By that time all the races we played are known, as Kent is the Filch, Me the Vulch, Julie the Hacker, and Vangie the Vacuum.

Julie then gets to attack Kent, and I “suggest” to her to ask me to be an ally so that we both get to 4 and thus win, and she did invite me (together with Vangie) and together we overwhelm Kent and Julie and I win with a score of 4 each to Kent and Vangie's 3!

This game ended up much better than the first play last February, as the negotiation and wheeling and dealing was more open so I hope this can continue to be played in the future!

Board Game: Escape: The Curse of the Temple
= 3 Plays

Since I then had to leave in order to pick up my wife we only had time for a quick game, so what better choice than this dice chuckfest! After an explanation to first timers Kent and Vangie, we set out in the dungeon. We were lucky to have 2 gem activation rooms immediately, so we make use of that to get rid of gems while Kent and Vangie gets used to the game. We only manage to get rid of a few gems by the first gong, so we needed to rush and explore more and get rid of more gems. We got split up yet still managed to get rid of gems, but had a long way back to the safe room by the 2nd gong and thus Vangie did not make it back and lost one of her dice. We continue to explore and get rid of gems and luckily we find the escape tile with several tiles to go and Kent and Julie manage to get out first, with Vangie and I getting 1 extra die each from them. I get out next, leave 1 die to Vangie, and she JUST manages to get out before the last gong expires! Whew we all get out frazzled but safe!

I also got in 2 plays last Monday as my son Shawn and I wait for my wife to finish her groceries.

We teach teach Ann (who is a substitute staff when 1 of the others has a day off) this, and we play using the basic game scenario. Ann initially makes several mistakes in rolling the dice, but we all manage to stick together. However, I notice we were running out of time so even with still 3 gems left I pushed everyone to search for the exit tile in order to avoid getting buried like in the last game. We find it and thus each must attempt to roll 4 keys to escape (3 remaining gems + 1 = keys). Shawn then Ann get to do so and I am last, but as each gets to give me 1 of their dice after they escape I then manage to roll the 4 keys to escape!

External image

We were then joined by Julie, and thus try another game. This time we start with 14 instead of 11 gems since we were now 4 players. This game had a bit more difficulty as we did not manage to stick together as much as the first game, and Ann lost a die since she failed to make it back to the start tile during one of the gongs. In addition, I had to add a reserve gem in order to reroll all black dice as I got left behind and had all of my dice locked with no one to save me. Despite this, we managed to regroup and get rid of all but 2 dice, and this enabled us to escape again, with me being the last guy again to leave!

Other games played during the week:

Board Game: Agricola
= 2 Plays

I had to travel to Indonesia last Monday evening until Saturday, but I brought along enough components of Agricola in order to continue my soloplay series using the E deck, and manage to get in 2 games during the trip.

Game 1 (Game 5 of the soloplay series): As a review I kept the hedgekeeper/Carpenter/Mendicant/Seasonal Worker occupations when I left off previously, and I manage to play the Renovator, Plow maker, and the maid card which gives me an even easier time in increasing the space in my house in order to grow my family members, which gives me more actions. In addition, the minor improvement cards also help a lot by putting a lot of food on the future actions spaces, and this puts off a lot of pressure in getting food and in addition to a baking strategy I cruise to an excellent 68 point game, which is higher than the target of 64 points, and I decide to keep the renovator in order to maintain my ability for fast family growth until the next game.

Game 2 (Game 6 of the soloplay series) : This game can be summed up simply by 1 word: Quarry. I could play the Quarry immediately due to my previously kept occupations, and this provides a HUGE stone accumulation ability starting from turn 1. I also had the woodcutter occupation, which gave me an extra wood every time I pick up wood, and this had the effect of me being able to build the high point major improvements which you normally have difficulty in getting in a regular game since stone only comes out by midgame. As a result I manage to get my highest score even in a solo game with 76, and I of course keep the woodcutter since the extra wood advantage is huge in soloplay!

Finally, in addition to the 2 games of Escape: The Curse of the Temple last Monday, Shawn and I played other fast dice games at the FLGS as my wife did the groceries.

Board Game: Zombie Dice
= 1 Play

Shawn and I start “Dice Monday” with this simple but fun dice game as we teach this to Ann. Shawn quickly gets to 10 brains first first, while me and Ann try to catch up. Shawn then gets stuck on 12, but then rolls 2 more brains and hits 14 (1 more than the required 13). Since he was first Ann and I have a last chance to eat enough brains to tie or surpass Shawn, but we both get shot and thus Shawn is the best zombie with a score of 14 to my 10 and Ann's 9.

Board Game: King of Tokyo
= 1 Play

We play this after the frenetic games of ESCAPE. Me (Alienoid) and Shawn (Cyber Bunny) get knocked down to 2 life due to the Gas Refinery explosion, and Ann's Brockenbar then finish us off with her Nova breath. Julie's Gigazaur then stubbornly stays in Tokyo in order to try to get to 20 VP while trading blows with Brockenbar out of Tokyo, but the bear proves mightier as Brockenbar finishes off Gigazaur who does not get out of Tokyo when it was down to 2 life! Ann thus gets a win in her first ever play of King of Tokyo!

Anna and her Brockenbar for the win!

Played a few games of TM over this weekend, both three and four player. I like this game more with every play, and I already rate it a 10. I think this one goes to 11.

Also played:

Board Game: Ruhrschifffahrt 1769-1890
Three player. Still loving this game. Would like to play more, but Terra Mystica keeps getting in the way.

Board Game: Le Havre: The Inland Port
First time trying this, despite owning it for some time. Very nice, relatively fast two player.

Went to board game afternoon and FLGS...This was the only game starting and coming in at 225 mins of play time was my afternoon of gaming.

Having never played the series before, it was lots of fun, and I did well enough to come in second!

My weekend really started on Thursday evening, when a friend came down with a box of games. Saturday we played a few quick three players before he woke up - Doge and A Dog's Life - and then the rest of the morning and early afternoon was devoted to a very long game of Fortune and Glory: The Cliffhanger Game. After that we played Mansions of Madness (I got to do ALL the puzzles!), which finished just in time for me to leave for my hockey match (in which I scored a hat-trick!!). After I returned we played a couple more games before bed, Cutthroat Caverns and Lords of Waterdeep. I think the friend enjoyed his weekend of gaming, and it was a change of style for me, with many of the games being long themey games, whereas normally I'm more into euros, and won't touch anything over 2 hours in length.

Sunday was a day with my parents, and my dad decided, for some unknown reason, to try to teach my kids Checkers. It ended up as more of a team game with my daughter "helping" my father, while I had the two boys "helping" me. I'm sure it wasn't high quality draughts, but there were a few times where one of us pulled off a sneaky move on the other. After that my son chose a game, one of his favourites - The Great Game of Britain.
