We didn't play a whole lot this weekend, but we did get two brand new to us games in, well technically Goblins Drool, Fairies Rule! isn't new to us since we played it at Gen Con last year, but it just showed up in our mailbox on Friday so we'll call it new. Played it several times over the weekend with my daughter, who was the main decision maker in Kickstarting it. It's a fun rhyming game with some wonderful art on the cards.

Also played six games of Indigo. Picked this up based off of a couple geeklists over the last month or so and it did not disappoint. It's a tile placing/route building game where you are trying to get gems of different colors to your edge of the board for you to score them. Played this with two players, with my daughter and also played one round with three when my wife joined us. I think everyone really enjoyed this one with my daughter even saying that it had to be in her top 5 games that we have played.

Also did a bit more organizing of our game shelves, worked on the other side yesterday, I still need to add trim to it, but I wanted the games on it. Gotta cull the blu-ray and video game collection that is hogging up the bottom shelf.

Have a great week folks!

Ooooh, and this just landed on my desk this afternoon.

Kemet, play number 3. Good time in general, but I made the mistake of reaching for top white technologies and stopped paying attention to board position. Ran myself broke and then had all my armies wiped off the board, and my lack of presence allowed one player to sweep an early victory.

Made the classic mistake of paying too much attention to teaching new people how to play and not enough attention to looking at my board and figuring out what my faction was supposed to be doing.

Friday - Gateway Games & More
1x - Hanabi - New to me
1x - Castles of Burgundy - Taught 4p game
1x - Love Letter - New to me

The wife and kids were still on their road trip with my father-in-law, so after a long week I thought I'd take advantage of the rare open Friday night and head out to Gateway Games & More in Eastgate and meet BGG user, edelen, for a night of games.

When I arrived, Dan et. al. were just getting started with a warm-up game of Hanabi which is a new game for me. I've heard a lot of buzz about this one so was excited to give it a try. It exceeded my expectations and I can see how this light, yet intriguing co-op is hitting a lot of tabletops. We scored 17 pts in our 4p game. On my Wishlist.

Board Game: The Castles of Burgundy

I brought Castles to provide a refresher for Dan and an introduction for two of his eurogamer friends who joined us for a very contested 4p game of back and forth. The game ran a bit long as it was a first play for some competitive/AD players, which was fine with me for I normally only get to play it as 2p. I think since we all played Board #1 (Dan, stated I was not allowed to play #8) we were all pursuing the same tiles and focused on the same initial needs to start. As the game unfolded we each had a bit of an individual strategy unfolding and I noticed the constant lead and player order changes that I don't see as often in my typical 2p experience. In the end, edelen won with a huge comeback (from where?) 216, 207 (myself), 206, and 176.

We had time for one more light/quick game, so someone pulled out Love Letter, another popular game right now. I thought it felt like a quicker version of Citadels. For the most part the game play was going over my head or though it unprocessed, as turns were happening too fast for me as the newbie who hadn't had enough exposure to the logical relationship between the cards rendering me an insignificant factor and easy target in the game. An interesting deduction based, micro-game. Not sure if my gaming group would like it, or get it... but I'll let the experience simmer for a bit and see what happens when I see it on a shelf for the first time.

The best part of my Gateway Games & More experience was finally meeting

in person and sharing a fun night of gaming.

Saturday
1x - Troyes - First 3p game
1x - Innovation - Badly defeated in 3p game

In keeping with tradition when my wife and kids are away, two friends came over at 7:30 am for a couple of early games before our crazy schedules kicked into high gear (I had to paint the deck).

Board Game: Troyes

I introduced the guys to Troyes which went over very well, liked by all. This was my third game and first time as a 3p game. It really shined with three.

Each of us were doing something slightly different with an eye on each others decisions, lots of buying each others dice. As the last turn unfolded my goal was to buy some white dice and go for a 6p bonus for the cubes I had in the Cathedral only to have my friend take that very action for far less to keep me from getting it. The end result, that six points was the difference between me winning by 1 and placing last by 1 (48-44-43). Awesome.

Board Game: Innovation

We only had an hour left so we pulled out Innovation a game I've played often over the past year but mostly as a 2p game. I felt like I was observing and facilitating this game more than participating as I kept getting myself in a tough spot and constantly out played by the smallest margins. I obviously lost, 5-4-1. Still, another fun game over coffee.

meeple Keep playing...

The first weekend of this month was devoid of gaming for me, as I was on the road, giving presentations at a seminar. This weekend I started to recover somewhat.

On Friday evening I played a game of Hive with my daughter.

Board Game: Hive Pocket
Board Game: The Castles of Burgundy

Saturday we played The Castles of Burgundy with the second expansion, which all seemed to fall my way. Not only did I get the park in the first turn, I later got goats, and exploited them efficiently for a beautiful 5-hex pasture of cows, cows, cows, goats, and sheep, the goats scoring with both cows and sheep. I got bonus tiles for pastures and mines, she got rivers. Final score: 176 to 129.

Board Game: Hive Pocket
Board Game: Martian Dice

On Sunday, we played more Hive, and some Martian Dice. My daughter won both of those games. Er, clobbered me, actually.

Board Game: Hanabi
Hanabi seemed to be the game of the weekend. Cracked open my AbacusSpiele version I got from GamesSurplus and played it five times: once at my FLGS with four (scored 17), twice with my son (12 & 1--yes, 1--playing with two is hard!), and twice with my son and his friend (17 & 16). Can't stress enough how great this game is for what it is and for its cost. One of the best values out there and an SdJ nominee to boot! I think it may win; it's that good. Just buy it!

Board Game: Loopin' Louie
Played about 25 rounds of Loopin' Louie. I found a full-sized version in immaculate condition at a thrift store a few years ago for just $2. Best $2 I've spent on a game, because we've gotten a ton of plays out of this, and we always have fun. Just can't beat it. Got a smaller one for my nephew for Christmas, and I'm told they love to play it too. Definitely earned its ranking as one of the best children's games, but I like it too!

Played a four-player slugfest of The Castles of Burgundy, which was brought to my FLGS board game night by none other than Mr. CoB himself, Bill Kunes. Truth is, I sorta begged Bill to bring it, since I learned the game last year around this time but the rules had slipped my slippery mind, plus another player besides me owns the game and had not yet played. Like I noted, an epic battle of four, but I somehow managed to triumph thanks to one sweet piece of advice offered by Bill early in the game. I repaid the kindness by stealing the pig farm hex that probably would have locked the game up for him. Yeah, I can be an SOB at times. Thanks, Bill! Great to finally meet you in person. Rematch anytime!

Board Game: Spite & Malice
Played a few more rounds of Spite & Malice with my son. This was a $1 pickup at the St. Vincent de Paul in Milford, Ohio. My son loves cats, and I think that drew him to the game. I lost track how many hands we played, but the final outcome was about 50/50. Not a bad little card game, and definitely one I can see as a stepping stone for kids to something a little harder. Now if I can just teach him how to play Tichu or Haggis...

Got together with a friend on Thursday (holiday here in Sweden) and played a lot of games.

Board Game: Small World: Tales and Legends

Started with Small World using Small World: Tales and Legends for the first time. Things got quite close and Friend E won by 100/97/96 over me and the wife.

Board Game: Trump, Tricks, Game!

Then we played two rounds of Trump, Tricks, Game! which I won comfortably both rounds (aka I had more points after 3 hands than either managed after the full game)

Board Game: Würfel Bohnanza

Then on to the new game of the day: Würfel Bohnanza. Friend E won this one, which I must say wasn't a very good game. It's a sort of Yahtzee but with cards that tell you what you need to roll instead of some fixed combinations. E won, just ahead of the wife and I was firmly in last place after failing a roll or two early in the game.

Board Game: Carcassonne: The City

A classic game. My friend loves Carcassonne: The City and he's quite good at it (after our first 30 games he was ahead 28-2!) but recently I've managed to beat him when we're playing multiplayer. Today I got the better of him and won by 11p with the wife trailing by another 25p.

Board Game: Mahjong

Speaking of classics, we rounded off the evening with 3 rounds of Mahjong which we shared fair and square by winning one hand each.

Sunday

I come back from a trip to Bali, Indonesia, and immediately get some gaming in in the house!

Board Game: Sentinels of the Multiverse: Rook City
Sentinels of the Multiverse: Rook City

I continue to try out the new villains and environments from the ROOK CITY expansion, as I again use Mr. Fixer and Expatriette, joined by Shawn (his first game!), who uses Ra. We fight versus the mutant Plague Rat in the toxic environment of the Pike Industrial Complex. In this game the environment proved to be more dangerous than the villain, as the deadly chemicals damage BOTH the heroes and the villain's cards! Plague Rat also managed to infect both Mr. Fixer and Expatriette, and it looked very bleak for the heroes as Mr. Fixer and Expatriette were both incapacitated early in the game! However, this game was a case where the powers on the reverse (knocked out) side of the heroes proved to be more useful then when they were healthy, as the 2 managed to support Shawn's Ra very well by removing ongoing (usually the infected status) cards as well as giving Ra an extra use of his fiery damaging powers. In addition, 1 of the environment cards negated the damage from the different vats and villain cards, and this enabled Ra to blast and chip away at the Plague Rat, and he thus manages to finish off the villain in a truly "fiery" ending!

Board Game: Thunderstone Advance: Towers of Ruin
Thunderstone Advance: Towers of Ruin

I play a solo game wherein the Dwarven Armsman and Disowned fighters are joined by the Human Criochan fighter and Patternmage Wizard versus the evil Belac and his minions composed of Djinnbound Corrupted, Avian Corvaxis, and the deadly Giant Worms. The early game had me easily defeating the level 1 corrupted, which unfortunately also had the side effect of letting me gain a lot of curses. The basic regular soldiers did a Yeoman's job as I bought a lot of Pikes, which really helped me draw a lot of cards whenever I entered the Wilderness. This meant I managed to level up several to the Criochan and Armsman Fighters, supported by a couple of Pattermages. However, this led to a lot of monster and curse cards clogging my hand, which forced me to waste time to get rid of them, and thus later on the more powerful monsters managed to escape. I then manage to buy several of the powerful Dancing Swords (which can fight by themselves!) and coupled up with the levelled up fighters had me easily defeat the boss Belac. Despite that, it ended up to be a closer game than i thought, as I manage to win by just 2 points, with a score of 42 to Belac's 40!

Board Game: Indonesia
Indonesia

No, I didn't actually play this game, but I have to say that the trip to Bali was memorable since my wife accompanied me and it was the first time for both of us to Bali (and her first time to Indonesia as well), and we had a great week attending a trade show then going on a tour around the island. Bali is much more commercialized then I expected but it is setup very well for tourism and the Balinese (as with all Indonesians) were very nice and accommodating!

A friend came over on Saturday. We played one very tense game of Kingsburg. It was the friend's first play. Her and my wife went for the embassy. I went for the farm. The end-of-year enemies were brutal - 3 of 5 were the maximum possible strength for that year, and the other 2 were at the middle value. Somehow, I only lost 1 battle. On the final battle, my wife would win if the die roll was 4 or higher, and my friend would win if it was lower. It was a 4 exactly. Final score: wife 48, me 43, our friend 41.

With the wife, along
with 1955: The War of Espionage, and Final Frontier.

She really liked Final Frontier (figured she would), but
I found it one of the most annoying games - I really hate
stuff where you have to constantly check an opponent's stuff
to make decisions. Primary reason I dislike Pax Porfiriana,
or Illuminati.

On my own front, I am trudging through A Lesser Wrath/Sommar Skrala (ALW
alone). I think I understand it, but I'm not done with the Sea Lords
rules, so I'm still playing this. Don't want to get distracted again.

Over the weekend I played:

RoboRally - A five-player game: as it's often the case, newguy won.

Formula D - A five-player game: we used the "city circuit" on the board's back and it didn't impress me, the regular circuits are much better.

Twilight Struggle - The USSR won: I misplayed the "Lone gunner" card as Defcon was 2 and the USSR player used it to make a coup in a battlegroud state, which ended the game. My bad.

Also:

Board Game: Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game

This was a three player game with the Greeks, Egyptians, and Spanish. We called the game due to time, but it was fairly clear Spain was going to win a military victory.

Board Game: Seasons: Enchanted Kingdom

A rather overlong game of Seasons with the expansion. The game was fun and I won by one point, but it lasted about twice as long as it needed to.

Board Game: Power Grid

I hadn't played Power Grid in over two years, and I had forgotten just how good this game is. We had an incredibly close game the whole way in which three out of the four players could power 17 cities at the end, the fourth was able to power 16. The winner won by a single elektro.

Board Game: New Amsterdam

Another excellent game of Nieuw Amsterdam. This continues to be one of my favorite new games. I came in second, though the winner won by quite a bit.

Board Game: Last Will

Haven't played this one in a while. I really like the game and its sense of humor. I won with quite a large debt load. I'm still waiting for Uncle's inheritance to show up. whistle

RPG: Das Schwarze Auge (DSA) (4th Edition)
Not much of board gaming last weekend. Just a solo game of Agents of SMERSH on friday but on saturday we spend a whole day on roleplaying. We played "Das schwarze Auge" with our RPG group, which plays together since more then 3 years. So, even with a lack of boardgames, I had a great weekend full of dice rolling!

Picked up a couple of games used from friends and both of them saw play this weekend.

Friday, my husband and I played

Board Game: Haggis

Glad to finally play a trick-taking game that's good for 2-3 players. Played several games and my husband won all of them. We played a couple more games on Saturday and I finally won one of them.

Saturday also saw our first play of Metropolys.

Board Game: Metropolys

I thought this one would be right up my husband's alley and I was right. I got rid of all my buildings first but he was a lot more successful gaining points so he won.

Sunday, my husband was too tired for me to teach him Helvetiasoblue, which arrived last week after ordering it used so we pulled out a quick game we haven't played in a while...

Board Game: Tsuro

This was close, but I won when my husband's last tile forced him off the board right before I would have had to do the same with my last tile.

Played a few games with the family this weekend: my lovely wife, my 15-year-old son, and my 12-year-old daughter.

Sunday my girls and I played one of my wife's favorites, Le Havre (too long for my son). My wife secured the victory with 190 pts utilizing a nice fleet of ships and several profitable shipping runs. My daughter (162) and I (158) finished neck-and-neck, but quite a ways behind. For the first time I didn't worry about food or taking on loans -- clearly I haven't quite mastered this strategy yet!

On Saturday night the four of us played Castle Panic. We had a few struggles, but won without ever feeling like we were in too much danger. We've maybe outgrown this title, except that it's one of my son's favorites.

We also played Acquire on Saturday night, another family favorite. My wife nipped me by a mere $1600 at the end. My daughter is definitely starting to pick up the strategy in this one; she finished only a few thousand behind my wife and me. This isn't my son's favorite type of game, as long-term planning isn't his strongest suit. He made a good showing, and demonstrated some good decisions, but struggled with knowing when to keep stock & when to trade it in, and finished with about half as much money as my wife.

All in all, a fun weekend of family togetherness!

Finally got to try The Boss with the The Boss: 5-6 Player Expansion in a 6 player game last week. It's a great game but the 5-6p expansion adds a new location, Saint Louis, which has some pretty cool new effects. There's a -2$ and a 4$ Gun where the winner gets 4$ and all other gangsters lose one in a massive shootout! The 6 player game is quite different as well since it is played in pairs, 3 teams using shared resources (gangsters) makes for a different game. I ended up winning a close game with a partner that had never even played the base game before

Followed that with a 6 player game of Libertalia , a game I really enjoy. I also took the win in a close game, I used the Freed Slave quickly in the first round along with all my higher ranked characters to gain lots of doublons and nice booty, kept my Granny Wata and played Carpenter on the last turn of round 2, as all others used the Granny, and played it in round 3 to get another 10 doublons. I managed to get 3 maps in rounds 1 and 2, and ended up winning the game by about 5 points.

6 nimmt! to finish things off, 2 games with 8 people. The first was a variant which allows players to play lower or higher cards. It's very chaotic and I frankly didn't care for this variant. Neither did the majority and we ended up quitting and going back to the main rules for the 2nd game.

And finally a game of Tsuro with my wife at her parent's place, always a fun little game!

Just arrived Thursday so we broke it out Saturday night. Since it's space you get to play with inertia. Very cool game once you wrap your head around the movement and timing of when the planets move.

I also got in a quick 2 games of Friday and lost handily.

And lastly did a PnP of Jasper and Zot.

Played this 4 times with my 13 year old son. Really fun game, this will be a family favorite for sure. I can see this game getting a bunch of expansions.

Also, played Agricola 1x and played San Juan once with my son.

and another friend came over and played games.

Board Game: Zombie Dice

I lost horribly as Ben and the other player had turns where they scored 8 brains. It's a decent filler to kill some time.

Board Game: Sushizock im Gockelwok

I can't remember where I placed, but I know I didn't win. It is still a game that is a little too heavy on the dice rolling for determining your fate, but solid none the less for a quick game.

Board Game: Indigo

Ben and the other player tied, and I was one point behind as the game does lead to rather close scoring. A really good filler abstract.

Board Game: The Lord of the Rings

And for the Knizia trifecta...we lost this on the final board as we were about 2/3 of the way on the pathway. We drew horribly for tiles, and I think one player drew four straight event tiles. I need more plays of various co-ops, but this is rather good. If In the Year of the Dragon is brutal, this is sadistic in a fun way.

All four games were new to me and thus will be expanded upon during the monthly new to me GL.

Bought for 50% off at one of my LFGS. (pumps fist)

Legion Supplies

Also found these for my Mage Knight cards. The store only had the one, but the company has ones in different colors so I'll likely load up on more for all of the cards in Mage Knight and Defenders of the Realm. FYI, they are bigger than Pro Decks, but they come to the edge of the Mage Knight box when on their side. I think three will cover the base game and the expansion.

Board Game: Tobago

Saturday Lindy and I dug out Tobago. It had been nearly a year since its last play and was the 37th play. It was really good to get this house favourite out again, and not surprisingly, I have already had another family member (Stacey) pass by and say, "hey, I want to play that."

Board Game: Mississippi Queen

Later in the day I taught Stacey Mississippi Queen. She rather liked it so hopefully it sees a few plays in the next while.

Board Game: Factory Fun

Later Stacey and Lindy joined me for a game of Factory Fun, which is one of their favourites. As I have said before I rarely win this game and do much better solo where I don't have to rush to think about my choice of playing piece. However the other weekend I won with a record score of 109. This weekend I further destroyed my old track record with a winning tie with Stacey of 85.

Board Game: Pick Picknic

Sunday the girls went away for most of the day so I did not get many games in. They did, however play Pick Picknic in the patio while I barbecued hamburgers for lunch.

4 games played this weekend.
