Lots of games have been inspired by video games, and vice versa. Sometimes a board game inspires a video games which then goes on to inspire a board game---ad infinitum.

Name your favorite board game inspired by a video game. What do you like about it? Do you think it's a good translation?

Name a video game you wish someone would do a decent conversion to a board game with. Why do you want to see a translation? What aspect of the game do you want to see cross over?

Are there any board games you wish were either in a direct-translation videogame format (ala boardgaming-online) or a translation which takes full advantage of computing tech?

The Castles of Burgundy 3
City Tycoon 1
Glory to Rome 1

Anno 2070 x 14 hours

Bolded apply towards my pledge--- both games are crossed off my list now too.

So, obviously I've been thinking about video games this week--- I discovered Anno 2070, which is a delightful cross between Antiquity and Roads & Boats. It's a city building game with a light combat element which focuses on managing supply lines--- your citizens demand fish, so you must build fisheries. Once that demand is satiated they demand hard liquor--- no problem, I'll start a distillery. Now they demand fast food, which requires starting meat factories and flavor enhancement centers, then combining the two to create fast food chains. Then they demand...

You see where this is going. Every time citizens become "satisfied" with what you are offering them, they grow into a new type of citizen which opens up new portions of the tech tree & also has new demands if you want those citizens to transform into the next level of citizen.

The game features environmental management features, multiple factions to play with completely different supply chains, scenario-based play if you want solid objectives, but also a continuous play mode which lets you simply build your city up. The game manages to differentiate itself from other civ building games in that the only units you can build are sea and air based--- no tanks or anything like that. So aggression is annoying, but largely favors defensive play so far as I can tell. Especially against the AI.

Overall, I like it alot. I'm kind of surprised there isn't a boardgame based on this system--- it's really good.

No new games this week, though technically that was the first time I played the physical copy of Timeline (not on iOS).

My games are feeling sad, being loosely packed away in boxes instead of proudly displayed on their shelves.

Nothing new for me this week, though I nickled both Eight-Minute Empire and Escape from the Aliens in Outer Space (and now I need to print out new maps for the latter, as I'm quickly running out). That's some good mileage for a game I wasn't sure was going to be a hit anywhere!

Weekly Plays:

The Castles of Burgundy - 1 (BAJ with Mike and Travis)

Yup, that's it. Busy catching up after my week off, and came down with some sort of bug late last week that I'm still fighting. Bleh.

I did finish building (via cardgamedb) a set of decks for all 7 Netrunner factions, after I got the cards sleeved. I have 4 physically constructed, with just a few overlapping cards that will need to be subbed in and out depending on which I'm playing (Hedge Fund, Archer, and Dyson Mem Chip... yes, I'm running a deck with no Sure Gambles, probably a sign that I am insane).

While it was a great week of gaming, most of it was just more of the same. I'm continuing to play the games I love and only adding in a couple of new ones. While I've played T&E lots, this was my first time ever playing F2F. I talked the other players to playing with open scoring and holding their tile in their hand so that the screens weren't needed. I ended up winning in a 3-player close game.

Skull & Roses was a lot of fun and one I will probably pick up at some point. Piquet was as interesting 2-player trick taking game that I will try to play again at some point. I'm not sure how it compares to Triumvirate or Clubs but it was fun. Northern Pacific was another fun, quick play. It's a nice distillation of shared incentives and temporary
alliances to a 20 - 30 minute play. Lastly, Continental Divide was an interesting game. I'm not sure if I have a handle on it yet but it was fun. I hope to get to play it some more.

I also came up with a card game that felt a little like TotR. Hopefully, I'll get in a couple of more plays and then maybe see what's involved with adding it to the BGG database.

Mice and Mystics
As I mentioned last week, I reread the rules on minion placement, and this made the second scenario go from impossible to incredibly easy. Now on to chapter 3.

*Kingdom Builder
This game was interesting. I wasn't crazy about it. I do like the depth of strategy that can be involved here, but in a 5 player game I feel I got a terrible start. I was last to play, and based on the moves taken by other players, most buildings were already gone by the time it was my turn, and I was left with no good places to place given my card, and only 1 okay place. I think I only ever took one other building, and that was through a lot of hard work. Although, I still managed to win the game by one point. So I guess I did well. I do like how the strategy is so subtle.

*Tales of the Arabian Nights
I finally got to experience Tales. I've always wanted to try it for just the storytelling, but based on reviews, I wasn't convinced I wanted to pick it up just to try it out. It was enjoyable, and shorter than the average game due to luck by Dr. Ward, Jennifer's college professor from undergrad. It was enjoyable, but I feel there is very little you can do to actually control the outcome of your game, so I would pass on picking up a copy myself.

*Yspahan
I got to try our copy of Yspahan. It's very simple and doesn't have a lot going on, but it was pretty fun. I re-skimmed the rules and felt bad with how much I messed up rules-wise for such a simple game, so now I'll have to try it again. I think the new rules will make it a much better game now.

This now brings our list of owned but never played games down to 7, as follows:

Tigris & Euphrates
Warrior Knights
-both of which I have played before, but am missing any recorded plays of.

1870
Eurorails
Iron Dragon
Letters from Whitechapel
The Princes of Florence
-of which all except Letters has been acquired at BGG.Con or as recently as within the last month. 1870 I really need to plan to be able to get to the table, but otherwise Eurorails and Iron Dragon are the only two I expect I'll have difficulties with.

Once I knock those games out, then it's on to my unplayed expansions. Then continuing my focus on nickeling and dimeing games from my collection.

- HB Custom Biotics

I will explore Shapers now.

3rd game of Seeland in a row and i always want to play it again. Awesome family game.

Western Town is my favorite board game of 2012. Really interesting, very well thought out game, perfect blend of development, planning, interaction, playing time. I played for my gallows : i ran my gold mine a lot with the support of my people, make cow boys with my gunsmith and i hung them for VPs.
