What games are you playing for the first time this month, September 2013?

These lists are posted at the start of each month, so that when we start playing a new videogame, we can post our initial thoughts on it. (Thanks to Ncik for the suggestion to change the format).
These don't have to be games that you've beaten, or abandoned.. just simply games that you picked up and started playing this month.

Please feel free to add a new entry each time you start a new game, as this will be useful for generating statistics.

Seems like it is focused on battle. Nice battlesystem. Little bit irritated on the camera so far, and it feels like you don't see enough to left and right. But it seems like a good game.

Having completed Assassin's Creed last week, I finally got round to firing this up tonight and played for almost 3 hours. So far I'm not enjoying it as much as the original... I'm not as interested in the setting (Florance vs the Holy Land), I also feel very unfocused at the moment, with no assassinations to work towards, just little quests to progress the story of Ezio and his father and side quests to beat up cheating husbands, not to mention the 73 viewpoints to scale!

I also find there's something odd with the graphics/animations... for example, climbing seems to be a lot easier but the animations look a lot more repetitive as if he's just bounding up the side of a tall building.

One other big downside to getting the game running was having to install/patch the Uplay system, create an account and then register my copy of the game. The frustration level is at least as high as getting GFWL to work for the Batman Arkham games.

So, I noted on the Beaten geeklist that I'd finished SR3 the other week. My sister's playing through it as well right now, so although SR4 is kinda tempting, we've agreed we'll play through that at roughly the same time. As a result, given SR2 is only £10 on Steam right now, I thought I'd give that an install and a play.

First impressions are it does look graphically kinda dated. The game originally came out a year after the original Mass Effect, and side by side it really doesn't compare very well even against that standard. Plus, even on my PC of today I can't run this game with High graphics settings without it chugging along at under 10fps.

Flip side, it is very interesting to see all the concepts that then made it through into SR3 (all the same styles of side missions, clothing, car acquisition, gang/police star ratings, etc.). It does have a slightly more serious feel to it (the core missions feel more rooted in movie-style reality, as opposed to the cartoon-style reality of SR3), but the comedy is still there.

Flip flip side, this is one of the worst portings of a control scheme from console to PC that I've ever seen! I was frustrated with SR3's lack of mouse control when driving, but this is even worse. No mouse control over any of the menus, and who the heck chooses Left-Control and Left-Shift to be the keys to navigate left and right on a menu!? It still says "Controller" setup on the Options menu, and the whole control scheme feels absolutely rushed in porting and poorly designed. Combine these things together and it makes some segments (especially the "drive a car to chase someone whilst shooting them") really annoying and overly difficult.

I'm trying not to let that last points affect my enjoyment of the game, but I've got to be honest and say it's really not helping. I'll likely finish the game as it's still fun, but I would have been disappointed if I'd have paid full money for this at the time.

ENTRY FOR DISHONORED-DLC, City Trials

It's nice when DLC adds instead of just "flushes out". This DLC adds 10 challenges with expert unlocks and a series of extra conditions to obtain the achievements.

These challenges are places to test your stealth, combat, and other qualities. It's a nice addition to the game and one that I'll probably spend up to 10 hours on to everything! I've just finished the first stealth mission so far.

I picked this up in the current indiegala bundle, and because I was firing it up to get the Steam Trading Cards I decided I'd give it a go.

It's a 3rd person action game which looked and felt like it was trying to be Dead Space.

After playing games like Assassin's Creed and Batman it felt like the character was very sluggish. Granted Dead Space is also rather sluggish, but in that game it really works to create an atmosphere.. plus the guy is wearing a huge environment suit, unlike the psychiatrist in Afterfall. Also, for a lot of the time, I wasn't allowed to run, though it did become an option later, when I was being chased, but seemed to go back to just walking again afterwards.

There's potential for an interesting story, but the cut scenes, where the game takes over control of the character, just seemed too frequent. The voice acting is not up to scratch either, and the delivery is very stilted (maybe it works better in Polish)

I'll probably give it another try to see if I can get into it more, but, at the moment, I don't see myself playing this to completion.

I've never been huge into racing games, but this is heck-a fun! The visceral wrecks are just great to watch. And the open-world thing really works. Way more fun to just drive around than it is in most non-strictly-driving open world games.

Too bad the 'Legendary Cars' DLC is no longer available (Back to the Future Delorean, Ecto-1, Knight Rider, General Lee)

I decided to fire up my bundled copy of Burnout Paradise and check it out. It turns out that it is great fun. Very easy to get in a couple of races between running errands and watching football. It's not a very deep game, but that's part of its charm. There's plenty of grindy stuff to do like unlocking vehicles and upgrading your Drivers License, but none of it seems to pressing. I particularly like that you have to smash new cars off the road to unlock them in your "junkyard". The Road Rage challenges are particularly fun, and of course the motorcycles are icing on the cake. Not even the dedicated motorcycle game series like MotoGP seem to nail down that crotch rocket sound like this game does.

The big negative in this game is the lack of camera views, specifically a dashboard view. There's a view toggle, but it only switches between a bumper view and a 3rd person view. I can't say it's a deal breaker but having played the excellent arcade racer, Driver San Francisco and the dedicated race sim Forza Motorsport 4, I have come to expect a certain level of polish and immersion in my racing games. Oh well, I'm enjoying this one anyways, and the start up costs were nothing.

I finally got a steam coupon I could use... 90% off Faerie solitaire, which meant I got the game for just £0.40

I fired it up to grab the steam trading cards and decided to give it a go... ended up playing on and off for the best part of 2 hours... For solitaire, it's a bit addictive (of course I went through a phase of playing Spider and Free Cell on my computer, so I guess it's not such a surprise!)

Having seen my sister playing this on her PS3 recently, I picked this up on Steam as it looked like it could be fun. I've played for about 4 or 5 hours now, reached B license rank, and... I found out that Longshot abandoned the game about a month ago for all the reasons I'm now already bored with the game. It just doesn't seem to be offering anything. The only reason to strive further in the game is to unlock new cars, and that simply loses its appeal real quick. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what I was hoping to get out of this game, but conversely it doesn't seem to be offering anything to get either. Maybe it'll turn out to be a "dip in and out" game where I simply play half an hour every now and then, but in terms of a game to get lost in for several hours in a sitting, I'm not seeing anything here that grabs my attention.

I forget when this was, but at some point in September I fired up MacGuffin's curse to collect the steam trading cards and thought I'd give it a go... Although the theme itself doesn't grab me, it's actually quite an interesting 2d puzzle game. I plan on giving it some more time, but at the moment whatever "light" gaming time I have is being taken up with Faerie solitaire of all things!

After playing the free demo on Steam, I bought this game. On Steam, it's something like $19, while on the game site, the game is available for less than $7, including a Steam activation. Did that, works like charm and saved myself some money.

Game is a turn based wargame. WW-2, part of the Russian front. One of my favorite wargame themes. So far, this has been a great game. Very easy interface, and everything a wargamer wants: terrain, Zones of Control, supply lines, weather. No politics, no production. Just a set number of objectives and a set number of reinforcements.

AI has the tendency to try & cut your supply lines to choke, as opposed to many games's AI, which just hang back and try to bludgeon you into submission.

Haven't started a campaign yet, but for that money (and for a boardgamer / wargamer like me) quite a load of fun.
