started an interesting list documenting his experiences with various fighting games. Since I have somewhat inadvertently found myself playing a lot of WWII-themed video games in the last year or so, I figured that I could do something similar for games that I've played about killing Nazis. This list also covers games that I have played in the past. There are some games which I have played but have not yet beaten or permanently abandoned and I have chosen to exclude those. I occasionally get to play board games on this theme, so I have left myself the option of adding those, but this list is primarily about video games.

When I list a console's name in bold, that means that I either own or have owned a copy of the game listed on that particular console. By "discovered", I mean not when I learned of the game's existence, but when I actually acquired and got to play the game. I have greatly expanded my library since I've had access to affordable used game stores in the last few years.

Right now, I have SEGA Genesis, SNES, SEGA Saturn, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Windows with which to play games.

Games on my radar:
Operation Europe: Path to Victory 1939-1945- Genesis
Panzer General- PSX
Panzer Front- PSX
Medal of Honor (1999)- PSX
Medal of Honor: Underground- PSX
Call of Duty: World at War: Final Fronts- PS2
Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood- PS2
Secret Weapons over Normandy- PS2
Commandos: Strike Force- Xbox
The Great Escape- Xbox
Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII- Xbox
Blazing Angels II: Secret Missions of WWII- PC
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault- PC

When I picked this up on PlayStation, I didn't really know exactly what to expect. I had seen my uncle play either this game or the original Panzer General once or twice, but I didn't really know how the game worked. I was so enmeshed with this game that I was able to overcome the often frustrating difficulty and beat this thing, even though it took me a couple of years to get through all of the campaigns. There are very few games to which I have gladly devoted so much time and effort.

Another old favorite. I discovered this one at a computer store maybe a few months after I got Allied General. I was blown away by this game at first and it seemed very advanced and interactive. The scenario builder, as deeply flawed as it is, was a lot of fun. Unlike the first two games, which for all their merits can be plodding in places, this one is fast and furious. It lacks the depth of the originals, but it is a much more accessible game. Since I played this on the family computer (I didn't get my own PC until 2004), my dad became interested in this game and STILL plays this game on occasion. He played religiously until at least 2007 or 2008. It's just that good of a game.

I played this game on PS2 and I found that it in no way lives up to the reputation of its predecessor. It is a generic first-person shooter with typical mechanics and a little bit of theme. If navigating the levels were a bit easier, I would consider revisiting this one, but I'm in no rush.

I am a huge fan of the PSX MOH games, so when I got my PS2, this was among the first games that I got. The game feels a little simplistic now, but at the time, it seemed like the height of sophistication. Of all the MOH games, it seems to have to best level designs and of the WWII FPS games that I have played to date, it is rivaled only by Call of Duty 2: Big Red One in that category. On a technical level, this game has some issues with movement and object contact glitches and the AI is atrocious. However, the atmosphere and music are epic and the graphics, while they were obviously improved upon by later sixth generation titles, are still passable if you can overlook how terrible the gun flashes look. I played the PS2 version back in the day, but I ended up beating it on Xbox in November 2013. Regardless of which version you end up playing, this is a good game and a must-play for anyone who likes WWII-themed games.

Despite my disappointment with the rough, uninspired Medal of Honor: Rising Sun, I was still stoked when this game launched and picked up fairly early. The game was an improvement over Rising Sun, but really didn't improve on Frontline in any meaningful way. The game was considerably easier, but it still took me a couple of weeks to work my way through. The final boss fight against that Nazi officer was pretty memorable, but I recall that the game sagged in the middle. Actually, aside from the boss battle, I don't recall any of the levels in the game. Now that I've beaten Frontline at long last, I am tempted to revisit this game since I haven't played it in years at this point, but I have better games lined up that I have not yet played.

MOH's last hurrah on the PS2, Vanguard was programmed by the B-team while the A-team worked on the more advanced Airborne game. This game was released at a time when the developer needed to tap into the broad PS2 market for funds to afford to do interesting things on PS3 and Xbox 360 and this game was just an attempt to raise revenues. There are no fatal flaws here and some parts of the last mission recapture that old epic war movie feeling that the MOH series has always done so well. However, you'll find yourself using a small handful of the same weapons over and over against the same enemies over and over. There are many Panzers and you must kill them all. Despite the low rating and the many criticisms of the game that I raised in my review, I actually kind of enjoyed it. In this case, brevity was a virtue since a game this repetitive would have made me rage-quit had it dragged on any longer.

One of the most overrated games of the sixth generation consoles, COD: Finest Hour had a large fan base when it was released. To its credit, the game allows you to play as the Russians and the British and has a tremendous variety of weaponry, unlike MOH: Vanguard above. However, this game deserves more demerits for incompetence than accolades for effort. The mechanics here are awful, the dialogue might as well have been written by Tommy Wiseau, and most of things that you are asked to do are just plain stupid. To speak just of the Russian campaign, which is the start of the game and yet the hardest part, you will be fine on foot for most of the early part of the mission. Then, you find a T-34 and have some real problems as you first have to drive through part of Stalingrad where there are dudes with Panzerfausts on every corner and roof, not to mention Panzers. Then, you get to take your T-34 and shoot down a squadron of Ju-87 Stuka dive bombers. No, that is not a joke. This game had potential, but the vision of the war that it presents is so redneck that I am surprised that Chuck Norris wasn't doing voice work during the American missions.

After Finest Hour, I was honestly afraid to play this game. However, I soon discovered that the COD family has other games with a great deal more merit than Finest Hour. This game still has some mechanical roughness, but the game runs much more smoothly as a whole and provides more and better mission variety. While it doesn't feature either the British or the Eastern Front, it does take you from North Africa, to Italy, to France, and finally to Germany. Playing a large chunk of the war and not just from D-Day forward is refreshing. Unlike in Finest Hour, where portions of the game where you controlled vehicles were maddening, things aren't too bad here. Tank controls are still a little rough, but the gunnery controls on the B-24 mission were pretty good and that was an excellent mini-game.

I had this one on hand for a couple of years before I seriously played it. Since it was a game which was also released on the new consoles, I was expected Treyarch to be lazy about the PS2 version, but I was pleasantly surprised in some ways. The mechanics are smoother than in Big Red One; you can actually walk on most land that isn't cordoned off. However, the story and dialogue are back to Finest Hour lows as you have to grow and mature with a group of soldiers under a shell-shocked and abusive sergeant. I won't say more until I've finished my review, but I will say that it is better than MOH: Vanguard.

This game more than any other is the one Xbox game that I always regretted missing out on. While I had no way to know it until I was almost halfway through the game, this game ultimately involves battling the Nazis. In an America divided into several nations in the 1930's, you eventually run afoul of a group of Nazi operatives/renegades/something not clearly defined trying to steal artifacts and conquer the Midwest. Since this game is a piece of alternative history, the Nazis you encounter are also using fantastical aircraft and weaponry like hurricane-generating zeppelins. All things considered, this game is really cool and well worth a try.

I looked for this game for quite some time and having acquired it, I have mostly found it lacking. I might yet return to it, but as it stands, I don't see that happening this summer.

I beat this one earlier this year. It is remarkably unremarkable, the Medal of Honor: Vanguard of the Call of Duty franchise. It is cool that you battle in both Europe and in the Pacific, but otherwise it is bland and rather uninteresting.
