You’re planning the perfect gaming meal for your group, complete with entrée, main course, and dessert. You might even start (or end) with a drink. Or perhaps you want to lay out your meal otherwise to your tastes.

What will your group be having? Imagine your group is what ever size best suits the meal you have planned.

Your group wants an evening of dexterity games! That’s not to say they don’t want meat—but they want the meat on them bones.

What will you serve them? A drink to start? Two? A light luncheon with a buffet to tempt? A meaty main course?

Your group wants an afternoon of economic games! They want a closed economy or two, perhaps some vicious stock-crashing, maybe even some engine-building. In the end, they just want to make the market go.

Will you serve them a starter course? or will you dive right into the main meal? What dessert will tempt without being (too) frivolous?

Your group don’t want to play CCGs, but they want a CCG-style evening! They want to build tableaus and they want heavy card interaction—maybe some deck construction even.

What will they eat? Will it be a large group? A small group? Some preconstructed LCG play, or some CCG-style board games? What will you have for drinks? for hors d’oeuvre?

Your group wants a night of serious euros! Just enough theme to keep us feeling classy, but none of those dice, please—this isn’t Vegas.

Do you have an apéritif in mind? Or jump straight to the entrée and then the main course? How heavy will the main course be? Long, with many dishes?

Your group wants betrayal! But not out in the open, not right out there for everyone to see. They want to savor the betrayal, to suspect each other of being far worse than they are and far better than they’d like to be. Really they want a proper Red Scare.

And you will give it to them! One of them is the skuldugger; one has the knife but has yet to use it. One person’s plans (or perhaps several people’s plans) are not what the others’ are. Dish by dish, they’ll eat their revenge cold.

So what will you serve? Cold meat to start? A chilled dessert? Or a main course flambée?

Your group wants theme! Lossa lossa theme. They don’t want spreadsheets and they don’t want realia. They don’t want the theme to end with the title and box cover. They want narration before optimization, deadsheets before spreadsheets.

What’s on the menu? A stiff drink to start? A barbeque? A decadent dessert?

The Cult! The Cult! The Cult of the New! The Cult of the New is having a party, and you’re hosting it. They want a full-course meal, with drinks, entrée, large main course, dessert—the works.

But they only want new games. Say, anything released this year. They should go well together—create a narrative of sorts, a flow to ease the passage of the Next Big Things into this group of gourmands.

Can you come up with something to sate them?

Your group hate each other! And they want to hate each other even more by the end of the night. And they want to savor doing so over a long, poisonous meal.

Will you start or finish with absinthe? Or will you open with the pufferfish? The meal should be long ... but not too long.

Highlights of games played 11/26-12/2:

Zahlen-Mobile (Joe=5) - Got in my fifth play of this. Speed-dice-rolling games are tricky beasts; this one gets it right. If you want to know the thing that's _most_ pulling me toward going back to Essen sometime down the road - well, OK, it's the people. But finding unusual, off-the-radar games like this is #2 on the list.

Foppen (Joe=45) - this is an old favorite, which I hadn't brought to the table in 2013; it was good to play it again.

Banana Republic (Joe=13) - I like the game, but I've never loved it (those 13 plays are over 19 years), and so it remains on the outskirts of my collection; if it took up more space, it would be gone by now. Not that I don't enjoy it - I just would usually play other games.

Steam Park (Joe=3) - of the Essen winners for me, this is the one in greatest danger of leaving my collection. I like it, but I'm worried it might not be a game I need to control my ability to play.

Glass Road (Joe=8) - this game is holding up very well for me. I think the resource mechanism is _extremely_ clever, both in terms of how glass and bricks are produced and in terms of how everything is tracked.

Nauticus (Joe=5) - having played twice with three and three times with four, I definitely prefer the game with three. It's _good_ with four, but it's the three player game which really stands out to me.

Russian Railroads (Joe=11) - reached a 10 rating for me. Previously, the most recently released game to hit a 10 rating for me was Race for the Galaxy. I'm continuing to really enjoy this game - and it's going over very well with others, which will make it easy to keep getting to the table.

Twin Tin Bots (Joe=4) - I've played this now with 2, 3, and 4, and have really enjoyed the game with each number.

Board Game: Shephy
Games Played

Expedition: Northwest Passage - finally got to try this one. I love the idea of exploration games but generally find very few that I actually like playing. I enjoyed my first play of this one. Worker placement with tile placement. Has some neat mechanisms such as determining where the water will be frozen potentially locking your ship and making you set out by sled. It's a race game but you don't have to make it through the troubled waters, only get home safely. The only down side I see is prolonged AP but if you can play with people that make quick decisions-after all the frozen tundra is spreading, better hurry!-it's a fun game

Nations - a second play of this one and I still find it enjoyable and the way the cards come out makes the game feel quite different.

Age of Industry Expansion: Belgium & USSR - tried one of the new 2 player maps, Belgium and it's very good. I think I like Great Lakes a bit better because of the luck involved in the strikes on the Belgium map but still quite enjoyable as a 2 player map for AoI.

Steam Park - Cute dice roller, optimal word being cute otherwise I probably wouldn't bother with it but I love Marie Cardouat's whimsical art

Pick-a-Polar Bear - hehe haven't tried with all 3 yet but could be fun! Ever so much more silly than SET I love this filler.

Shephy - I rarely play solitaire games although I find them very attractive in theory - I get way too distracted by, say, BGG!. I have a few I haven't tried yet but need to get to the table. I like the little drawings in this one and it plays quickly 10-15 minutes and it can't really be that hard to win, right, you just have to increase your herd of sheep, right? Doh, it's very hard especially if you don't look at the deck ahead of time! Even knowing the cards it was difficult. Now I must play it until I win...

Board Game: Trick of the Rails
Games Played (11/24 - 11/30)

1849: The Game of Sicilian Railways x1
My second playing, and with 4p this time. We got all those niggling rules issues sorted out. This was a very satisfying playing, very demanding. In the end, with final scores of like $7012 we had a tie for the victory. Very tight and exciting finish. I hope to play this one more.

Canyon x1
I took a few games to play with my wife's relatives over Thanksgiving. This one went over fairly well.

Hanabi x1
I love this clever little cooperative card game. My wife's family enjoyed it, too. The temptation to cheat just a little was evident during our game, and I had fun teasing the guilty party.

Love Letter x1
This one has been a total hit locally (especially for my wife, who counts this as her current favorite game). I upgraded my components slightly with some little red plastic hearts as the tokens of affection.

New Amsterdam x1
Another play: 4p. This was the first time I've played where I felt like I executed a strategy and stayed flexible in the right balance to win it. I think I finished last in the previous game. I'm learning!

Stephenson's Rocket x1
I really need to track down a copy of this again. This game is quicker to play than I remember, and gives satisfying decisions. I can't think of another game that fills quite the same niche.

Trick of the Rails x1
I played Kevin's copy. This one really struck me. Its also NEARLY impossible to track down a copy, although I managed it. I should have one en route from Australia at the moment, hopefully it arrives. This is a game that I hope to play a bunch of times, since it feels like there is a lot to explore.

Friedrich A particularly intense game. I was Prussia against 3 aggressive players. Managed to keep Russia in tied up in East Prussia for 5 or so turns, and the Hanoverians had enough cards to keep the French at bay. I had to use a bulk of cards to beat back the Austrians and destroy the Imperials. After a several turn respite Prussia was on the ropes again. The Russians were hung up on a strong spades area so I didn't have to worry about them, the Austrians were within 2 fortresses but I was hanging on in another strong area, the Imperials within 3, but they were weak. The Hanoverians had mostly collapsed, but the French need a couple of turns to regroup. Then France fell out of the war, and Austria won a well deserved victory the 2 locations which I held no longer required by Austria. I think we were about turn 12 or so.

Freight Train I'm a sucker for train themes and Freight Train is a nice set collecting game. I was doing fine the first day, but the winner did outstanding in the final round. I faded to a tie for second.

Catan Histories: Settlers of America – Trails to Rails Nice variant of Catan - where catan now has a cube delivery race grafted on top. A bit long but it works. Since Catan is one of my favorite, it is nice for a change of pace.

Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 3 – The Heart of Africa Pulled this one back out - I rather like the impact and management of terrain and the way the colors are grouped. Plays well as 3 player.

Can't Stop A frequent end of night dice rolling and teasing each other to make that "one more roll"

Alhambra I've not gotten this to the table recently. I always enjoyed its two forms so set collections - money to by stuff and majorities of building types to score. While not terribly interactive, you do have to pay attention to what others are collecting. I used it to get a player that does not like to branch out to try something different.

Pandemic Explained to some others how to play. Once they were familiar with the mechanics, I've let them drive. they've won once, came within a turn once, and failed miserably another time.

Glen More Enthusiastically brought to game night. However, it struck me as another of the nondescript points engine game, where you have to commit to how you will collect points and hope that the tiles turn up in the order that they won't be grabbed out from under you. I did like the way it uses the tile selection to turn order. Jumping ahead to grab a tile, can prevent you from having turn for a while. However, being too much of a bottom feeder has it penalty as well.

Ultimately a game I don't mind playing but not a game I would suggest.
