Okay, I admit it, the main purpose of this geeklist is to draw the attention of those of you who look at geeklists but don't look at the Forums to the ongoing User Poll:

The Geek Annual User Poll 2013

Results so far are really interesting, but I don't want to do a full analysis until the poll has had a little more time to get votes in. So if you haven't answered the poll yet, please do so!

The response so far has been astonishing, with over 3500 users completing the main poll, but last time 4000 users answered it and I'd like to beat that, especially as Aldie's stats show a 10% increase in visitors to the site and +22% new users. I take the blame for the lower response rate for posting the poll during the holidays.

In addition 3000 users have also completed the additional Supplementary Poll and Opinions poll. Seems like there can't be too many questions!

This geeklist picks out some of the interesting highlights so far, but leaves a lot of items uncovered, saving them for a full analysis later.

Here is the poll thread. So who has answered? The main demographics are:

3359 Males (92.2%) and 286 Females (7.8%).

That is a massive rise in the proportion of females, with last poll (2011) being 5.6% Potentially this is partly due to the poll being highlighted in the Women & Gaming forum.

2.3% of people said they would have selected 'Other' if that had been an option (2.4% last year).

The vast majority (three quarters) of us* are aged 26-45. There are only a tiny population (0.6%) who are 18 or under. Also very few who are over 55 (2.8%). Maybe those older are not gamers? But probably they just don't spend much time on the internet and actually there are a lot more gamers over 55.
There was not much change in those numbers, but there has been a shift in age.
In 2010 11% were 25 and under, in 2011 8% and that has dropped to 6.5%.
In 2010 13% were 46+, in 2011 16%, that has increased to 18%.
So it seems the geek continues to have an aging demographic....

* Well the 'us' that answered the poll, which is arguably representative of that portion of the BGG-viewing public who are both registered and answer polls. For the purposes of this geeklist and the full analysis I'm going to treat this as being representative of the views of the entire population of BGG users. Which is probably wrong.

So far the poll shows 57% of respondents from US, up from 52.5% last year - showing a reverse in the increase in the proportion of users who are from outside the US that the last poll showed.
Canada and the UK remain the next two largest geek nations, each with 8% of the vote.
Germany jumped into 3rd with 4%. Australia remained at 4th with 3%.
The next largest countries are the Netherlands, Spain and Belgium (all with 1.7%). All of them down, with the Spanish proportion continuing to drop - down from 4% in 2011 and 5% in 2010.

The total proportion from Europe dropped 5% to 27.5%.

40% of respondents continued to say that they enjoyed playing RPGs, with 3.4% saying that it is their favourite game time (about the same as 2011).

Euro boardgames remain the favourite game type with 49% of the vote (and 92% of users enjoying them), followed by Ameritrash/Thematic at 20% (79% 'enjoying'), Wargames at 7% (40% enjoying). Wargames were the only one that showed a significant change (down from 10%/45%). The shift in voters was to Co-operative (up from 4% to 8%).

Videogames continue a slow decay in popularity, down to 57% enjoyment from 2011's 59% and 2010's 66%. Only 1.1% of users say videogames are their favourite game type (down from 1.7% last time).

34% of us enjoy playing game online, but this is clearly a time-filler with only 0.1% of us saying online gaming is our favourite kind of gaming.

Yep, thats it for the analysis so far.
I'm going to let a few more votes come in (4500 users would be great!) and then do a full analysis when the responses slow down to a trickle.

However, if you took the poll early on you may have missed the additional questions that got added:
