What games are you playing for the first time this month, January 2014?

These lists are posted at the start of each month, so that when we start playing a new videogame, we can post our initial thoughts on it. (Thanks to Ncik for the suggestion to change the format).
These don't have to be games that you've beaten, or abandoned.. just simply games that you picked up and started playing this month.

Please feel free to add a new entry each time you start a new game, as this will be useful for generating statistics.

I am playing the Gamecube version on the Wii. I have previously played Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands (Wii), which is a direct sequel to this game, and enjoyed it very much. There are a lot of similarities.

Obviously the Sands of Time is a much older game. The textures look blurry, the camera control is clunky, the Prince's movement is slower. It feels a little more "manual", less automated. But it's essentially the same kind of game. I believe this is the one which introduced the Dagger of Time, which allows you to rewind time, which is a nice touch. You have to keep charging it up though.

Early days.

I picked this up (along with many many other games during the holiday sales on Steam, GOG and Origin) and got to try it out at the start of the new year. I had only played a few other KoF games before, but I'm glad to finally see the characters with a crisp new look rather than the pixelated style that started to look really low quality in the later iterations of the "King of Fighters [year]" games. I'll have to play around with it to find which team suits my style, but I remember being a fan of Iori, Athena, and... well... I guess that's why I'll have to test the waters again. K', maybe?

I picked up the Ultimate Edition for PC. I managed to play for a good few hours last night, and I'm really enjoying it. The fighting system is different than NetherRealm's (and before it, Midway's) Mortal Kombat games, actually utilizing directions to block and using three varying strengths of attack (which may be punches, kicks, slams, etc.) rather than just "high" and "low" attacks, though the old standbys of sweeps, uppercuts and juggling combos are still there. What really sets each of the heroes and villains apart is their character-specific powers (used with the B button on the Xbox controller), which can vary wildly. Wonder Woman does a simple stance/weapon change, "super-super-strength" is activated for Superman, Hawkgirl actually takes flight during battle, and Harley Quinn opens a gift box that grants her a random one of four bonuses.

The entire game is an exercise in "cool for the sake of it." Super moves are over the top, even for comic characters, and the story is a blatant excuse to have heroes and villains of the DC Universe all battle each other indiscriminately at a roughly equal level of physical power (Batgirl versus Doomsday? Sure!). Transitions between zones in levels that have multiple fighting areas are ludicrous, involving as much crashing through scenery as possible. But really, I wouldn't have it any other way. I tried out KoFXIII before this, but the sheer ridiculousness of Injustice will probably have me come back to it more often.

ninja Having just finished Far Cry 2 on Jan 1st (and really enjoyed it), another open world with a different flavor seemed in order. A nice influx of Xmas cash from my Dad combined with Holiday sales from both Ubisoft and Steam allowed me to go a bit crazy. Of my few purchases, this is the one I've gotten deepest into--four or five missions into it now. Initially a bit frustrated with my mouse and keyboard controls until I got the hang of the Parkour move. Now I'm really enjoying just roaming around the rooftops looking for pinnacles to climb. Combat reminds me a lot of Soul Calibur, with its "block and counter-punch" style. Barely scratched the surface yet--just put a serious beatdown on my little sister's loutish boyfriend and stand at ~1000 florins with no money spent except one visit to the Doctor. Does anybody know if the Clock Tower of Florence is climbable--maybe only as part of the storyline? ninja

After Ubisoft's long sale Steam followed suit, and since the original CoH and its expansions have been my most-played games of the past few years, I'd been looking to pounce on this since its announcement. At 66% off it was a no-brainer to snag this one. Couple of missions in. On the job training.

surprise After the great fun I had with FC2, ten bucks for the Deluxe Edition is surely gonna be worth it. At this point, I've only "escaped to the titles" and climbed my first Radio Tower. Gonna hold off and savor this one for a time, while I focus on ACII. surprise

Picked up an Xbox One last week and am enjoying Need for Speed Rivals. Also got Battlefield 4 and FIFA 2014, but Need for Speed has been my favorite of the three games.

I really enjoyed Burnout 3 back in the day and thought Burnout Paradise was pretty good on PS3, and Need for Speed seems to be a lot like those games, which is a good thing in my book. A fairly arcade-style racing game, not as demanding as the sim-style Gran Turismo or Forza games. As Penny Arcade said, it's also sort of like a caRPG or MMORPG for cars given all the quests and leveling you'll be doing. I'm enjoying the racer campaign now and hoping to try the police one afterwards.

Battlefield 4 seems to be a $60 beta, which is unfortunate. The single-player campaign has crashed several times. The multi-player online generally won't load at all due to server issues or has very long queues. I think Modern Warfare 2 was the pinnacle of console FPS and this seems like a bit of a step backwards. Fairly disappointing. Doesn't even have couch co-op like MW2 did.

FIFA 2014 seems a lot like the FIFA 2010 that I had been playing for the past few years. The player movements seem a bit less predictable, which is a good thing, but all in all, not a big upgrade by any means.

Mostly looking forward to Titanfall in March. I was going to wait to get the new console until then, but decided to pick it up a couple months early.

As a consequence of odd offers from Amazon, I managed to pick this up, and the sequel, Pacific Skies, as Steam keys for a total of $0.99. So far it seems alright. I feel like I am get to get into any really meaty and interesting dog fights, but the potential seems to be there.

And even if it's not, I think I may have gotten my money's worth already. (Not even counting the fact that I'll probably end up close to break-even once I sell off the trading cards for both games).

I've started in on this. It is unclear to me whether I will finish it; certainly I've heard or received enough advice of the form: "play a bit in each city, and then stop and go on to one of the better games".

So far I find the controls unintuitive (I'm using a gamepad, and I had to remap the controls, since most of the "obvious" buttons (head, feet, etc.) were in clearly wrong places, but this also means that I don't know where e.g. "high profile" was supposed to be (I've got it on L1).

Also, the game instructional text leaves a lot to be desired (I'm not sure how many leaps of death I took off of the first viewpoint before figuring out what I was supposed to be doing, and it's not made clear from the fighting tutorial why I might want to use the heavier attack).

My wife picked up a couple of used wii games for the kids... this one came with a 'dance mat' style controller and has around 15 different games. There's a a free play mode (which we mostly played) as well as an outdoor adventure mode and a multiplayer mode.

My wife, kids and I all had a go at it and it was a lot of fun. I think the kids are going to enjoy it quite a bit.

Of the ones I played, I enjoyed the minecart and speed skating the most. Many of them require you to run on the spot (which always reminds me of "scary feet, scary feet" from Sulley's morning workout in Monsters Inc ) or step/jump between the various directions, so it provides quite the workout... perhaps more even than the wii fit, since you can run pretty hard and you can actually jump on the mat, which you couldn't do on the balance board!

Another used game my wife picked up for the kids. This is basically a single player game with an added 'assistance mode' for a second player.

When my wife and I tried it, I didn't actually get to be player 1, and player 2 doesn't actually get to do a lot, so my experience so far is limited... the way the perspective worked looked very confusing and my wife often complained that she "didn't want to be upside down!". I don't think it's one our 3 y/old will be able to do just yet, but it's Mario, so I'm sure he'll be excited to give it a try.

Another Gamecube game for me. The idea is to play through my Gamecube games (e.g. I just completed Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time). Also, I have a copy of Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World waiting.

Completing Xenoblade made me want to play this, as I suspect it has broad similarities (i.e. they're both epic JRPGs with real time party battle systems).

I've just posted the first entry of my session report:

I got Skyrim as Christmas present and have played... (checks) ...err, 50 hours of this so far this month. How is that even possible given everything else I've played this month!?! Anyway, wow, it's really pretty. Annoyingly one of those games where you chargen time is kinda wasted as you end up with a full head helmet obscuring everything you created a lot of the time, but hey ho. I've reached the high 20's level so far, and I doubt I'll finish it this month, but I'd like to actually complete this game at some point. Of all the Elder Scrolls games I've owned in the past, I've never actually completed any of them...
