Okay, this year, I'm actually buying things in January.

Thanks, ponies.

Though, I'll also mention now that while I'm figuring on minimal board game purchases, now that I effectively have an eReader, I figure to get an RPG (electronic) book every month or so. (Might be slower, as buying them faster than I read them wouldn't be much use.)

I found out about the MLP CCG when I happened to spot some of the booster packs at Target. Since then, I've been seeing those, but not the base sets....

Well, today, we happened to spot the base decks at Target. And I impulse bought them. Kinda. I've been contemplating it for a little bit, and the few comments I've seen have been somewhat positive.

Anyway, there's three main decks, each themed around two of the mane six. Target just had Twilight/Applejack, and Rainbow Dash/Rarity (which does take care of all the favorite ponies in the household...), so I got those two. If I like the game, I'll make sure to get Pinkie Pie/Fluttershy, and contemplate a couple boosters or something.

Good lord, I'm getting involved in a CCG again. Someone shoot my wallet now....

My plans are to concentrate on D&D nostalgia and expanding my GURPS collection for the year. But DriveThruRPG is having a New Year's sale on several main RPG books to encourage people to try out new systems.

I've seen a few interesting things about Pendragon, and have been contemplating trying to adapt the Passions for other duties, so here we are.

I also contemplated Artesia: Adventures in the Known World (enjoyed the first graphic novel) and Savage Worlds Explorer's Edition, but I'm trying to keep to a minimum of things I don't have time for.

I've been a fan of Mystara since GAZ1: The Grand Duchy of Karameikos came out. Or, should that be: since X4: Master of the Desert Nomads came out?

Any way, I've been very happy to see the Mystara community come together to put out such a nice product as the Threshold net 'zine. This one had more varied content, and I had some problems with an adventure that didn't clearly state where it was til the end, and never mentioned what system it was using (AD&D 2e as it happens).

There were some articles I didn't care so much for (such as the Mystara Vaults of Pandius), but the adventure wasn't bad, and there was some very good 'hollow moon' material.

And now we get to something I've been wanting to buy for the past few years. Sadly, it's out of print, and all the prices I've seen are well over cover price. So, it's time to go PDF. This is probably a good one to go PDF with, but the price is a bit higher than my comfort level with electronic files.

Now, to find time to read through it.

Thaumatology is a big book, and there's been several supplements to it. So this month, I got one of the main ones, to help round it out.

I'm also trying out the current incarnation of Pyramid with a three-issue subscription ($20 for three $8 issues). I know there's back issues that look interesting enough, but this will help me decide what I think of the 'zine as a whole.

I often don't pay that much attention to various fan-projects out there, but Threshold is an automatic pick-up for me.

This one was... a bit too much. Over two hundred pages on the Sea of Dread, and it's not done yet. I'm still going through this one. Part of the problem is I'm more interested in the southern Sea of Dread, and the magazine is mostly focused on the northern parts of Ierendi and Minrothad (though it is making those parts more interesting). And my reading queue has been overloaded lately so my RPG reading time has dropped off.

Princes Celestia & Rarity Theme Deck
Equestria Nights Booster Pack

I've managed to hold of going crazy on the FIM CCG, but when I spotted the first expansion (Equestria Nights), I grabbed a booster and the Celestia deck. While the game's not bad, it's not great either, so I'm thinking I might just stick with that pattern for each release, no matter how much the completist in me says to get one of each of the pre-built decks.

Dragon's Peak
Empire of Ice
Pirate Seas

So, while toodling around the Toy R Us on the corner (yes, that close!), I noticed they were offering $10 off on all the Skylanders 3-packs, and I picked up Dragon's Peak adventure set for the extra level and Sunburn. Had fun with Skylanders again (ironically, just about the one-year anniversary of picking up the game last year).

So, the next day, I came back and picked up Empire of Ice.

And yesterday, I picked up Pirate Seas. I'd held off on it because we already have the character (Terrafin, who is fun). The last level pack looks to be pretty rare at this point, so I'm not likely to get it. Also, I was hoping to get a couple extra characters that haven't reappeared in the later games (so the original packages are the only way to get them), but no luck.

Also spent time at GameStop pondering a deal for a used PS3, extra controller, and two used games for $230 (~$250 with tax), and barely talked myself out of it. For now.

While I was at the GameSpot I noted they had a used copy of Curious Village. It wasn't until I got home and checked things that I realized that that was the out-of-print first game in the series, so I went back and got it the next day.

Currently, I've been working my way through the ending portions of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future (which I gave Smudge as a present quite some time ago), and plan on starting this one when I'm done.

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
Fullmetal Alchemist and the Broken Angel
Guitar Hero
SingStar Queen

While toodling around the GameSpot website I noticed they had a dropdown for older systems along with the normal modern console selections. Nothing for the PS2 was available online, but a couple titles popped up available copies at a store in Redwood City, which is pretty close. Since the stores here dumped all their PS2 stock ages ago, I was intrigued....

Pretty nice store. Only one person on duty, but she was attentive and knowledgeable. Seems to be more used game focused than the closer stores, but the PS2 stuff is on permanent 75% off sale. Star Ocean is what I was there for, but we decided to take a chance on the FMA game, and Smudge is interested in the other two (we do have a guitar controller already), and we got it all for less than the $10 I was expecting to pay.

They also were selling three used DS games for the price of two, which was tempting, since it was trivially easy to find about four I'd like to get. But that's outside the current budget.

GURPS 4th edition has just hit it's 10th birthday, and Warehouse 23 is celebrating with a 23% off sale. I don't have a bunch of spare money, and I've been too busy with other reading to do a lot of RPG reading (though I finally finished the last couple issues of Threshold), so I just got the next big-ticket item on my list. I'd have liked to have gotten it in hardcover, but didn't want to spend the extra money + shipping. Oh well.

Okay, I couldn't resist spending a bit more money on the Warehouse 23 sale.

Ritual Path Magic has been the intended 'next GURPS purchase' for a while, since it's a very popular magic system, and I've actually been putting off some of my Pyramid reading, as it expands on it. Divine Favor looks good, and is cheap (just over $3 on sale).

Way back when, I tried the (extensive) Caesar III demo and liked it, though I never got around to getting the game. This last weekend, GoG had a sale on it and the two other games built off the same engine (...and a bunch of other stuff). I've heard good things about the series on Three Moves Ahead, and Pharaoh especially, so I bought that, and have been spending too much time on it since.

With my RPG reading surging forward again, the issue of Pyramid celebrating the 10th anniversary of GURPS 4e was well timed. Of particular interest was Kromm's article on what he'd have included in the Basic Set if the concepts had only existed at the time.

I decided to get another subscription as soon as I had money, and got it just in time, since the next issue came out the next day. Spaceships isn't a current focus for me, but should come in handy at some point.

It's hard to argue with free. Though figuring out my unused Steam login to redeem the game nearly derailed it.

Anyway, the high-concept has always sounded fun, though presumably more city-builder than I really care for. So, I'll get around to it... someday. Yeah....

And another massive issue of Threshold is out to disrupt my reading!

Davania is the barely-seen southern continent of Mystara. I was kind of lukewarm about the idea of an issue dedicated to it. But so far, I'm really liking it, more so than the two Sea of Dread issues.

Smudge has always liked the Tomb Raider games, and while they aren't entirely my thing, I certainly admire them. (And complain about why I can't just work my way along ledges and grab things, and the like when a game like SW:TOR forces me into run-jump-die-a-lot gameplay.) So we've been looking at the reboot for some time (SquareEnix does not hurt either).

75% off at GamersGate, plus a coupon they sent me some time ago (expires on the 12th!) makes it an easy decision.

Another monthly RPG purchase, now that I've finished reading Threshold #5. I need to get all the companions, but this one contains some math I want to start coming to grips with, so it's first.

Way back when, I did a fair amount of gaming with a not-quite local group. They were big into Diablo when it came out, and Diablo II when that came out. In between, they enjoyed Darkstone.

Personally, the 'action RPG' doesn't do as much for me, the plots are generally too thin. But they can be a nice bit of mindless mayhem, and I ended up playing a decent chunk of Darkstone during a LAN weekend.

I also ended up with a copy of Dave's disk. I played through the game later. So, as a (very weak) apology, I bought a copy on GoG this weekend, when it was on sale.

GoG started a big fall sale with a free copy of the original M&B. I've tried out the demo before, and it's not entirely my thing (the first-person viewpoint is just too restrictive), but they do have some interesting ideas in there. I don't know if I'll ever get around to trying it again, but I'd like to.

Heroes of Might and Magic: A Strategic Quest
Heroes of Might and Magic II Gold
Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete
Heroes of Might and Magic V: Gold Edition

I've managed to miss a few deals on interesting games as GoG rotates through them on a quick basis during their fall sale.

This one I went back and forth on a bit. I've got too much on my plate as it is. ^_^ But, I've been wanting to try out the 'new' HoMM games and see how they are. I've been wanting to get III Complete, since it contains the second expansion I never got. I've been avoiding re-buying I and II, but I recently thought about playing II again, and stopped because it was performing too clunky. Anyway, this was a package price that shaved about $4 off the sale price.
