Welcome to the 2014 RPG Geek Newbie-Friendly Play-by-Forum Initiative!

See the News Post about this event here: RPG Geek Play by Forum Initative - 2014 Edition

We're glad you've taken an interest in our Newbie-Friendly Play-by-Forum (PbF) Initiative. We've assembled some of the very best RPG Geek Game Masters (GMs) who have taken the time to put together games suitable for new players. The games being offered are shown below (one per geeklist entry). There are almost 50 games being offered - two full pages of geeklist items. Each item should clearly indicate how many slots the game will take - if you don't make the cut-off for one game, add yourself as an alternate or jump at another. We had all tables fill up quickly the past 2 years - don't wait to sign up!

Please note, some Game Masters are offering a 2nd table of a given game. Those games will have more than one geeklist item to separate out the different tables.

You will not need to buy any rules nor will you be required to read piles of system notes - but be sure that these games can be addictive and you may just find yourself buying some things before it's all said and done. Most games will provide a character for you and some will allow you to make one yourself. Our goal is to keep it as simple as possible.

I've asked the GMs to make these games ultra-short. Given the speed of play-by-forums (i.e. slow!), it will still take several months to run online - but only require a posting frequency of once/day (i.e. check in once a day to see if you have any actions or roleplay to add). Checking in more frequently is, obviously, fine too

We have a brief FAQ for how we tend to run Play-By-Forum games along with some examples. Check it out here: PLAY-BY-FORUM (PbF) - FAQ & REFERENCE

RULES
d10-1 These special newbie-friendly games are open to anyone who has not played in an RPG Geek Play-by-Forum before.
d10-2 Each new player is allowed to join only one game until Wednesday (5-March) at which time they may take one additional seat at another table. We filled up so quickly last year - jump in now!

People do, for whatever reason, drop out of games so if you are really keen on a game, put yourself down as an "alternate" - there is a reasonable chance you will end up in the game when the inevitable happens! If you list yourself as an alternate for a full table, it will not count against your "one virtual seat" at another available table.

Feel free to ask questions about any game on the list directly under that geeklist entry. If you want to sign up as a player, make that clear in a post under the geeklist entry. Do not assume that asking questions about a game implies you are playing - be direct and specific if you are signing up (though ask as many questions as you want before committing). Otherwise it is first come, first served until the table(s) fill.

I hope to see many of you take advantage of this opportunity to get into the games! We got some amazing players from the 2012 and 2013 crop of Newbie friendly games. Looking forward to gaming with some of you, virtually, in 2014!

RPG Item: Dungeon World Roleplaying Game

Dungeon World is a world of fantastic adventure. A world of magic, gods, demons, Good and Evil. Brave heroes venture into the most dangerous corners of the land in search of gold and glory. You are those heroes. You go where others can't or won't. You conquer the unbeatable and laugh in the face of Death. There are monstrous things lurking in the world. Are you ready to face them?

Dungeon World is a fast-paced, easy-to-learn role-playing game where the story is always moving forward in interesting ways. A failed roll of the dice NEVER means "nothing happens" -- it just might not be what you were expecting! Given the 2012 Golden Geek RPG of the Year on this very site, Dungeon World combines the best of old-school adventure and new-school gameplay.

RPG Item: Book 01: The Warlock of Firetop Mountain

The adventure on offer is entitled The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, and will be loosely based upon the classic interactive gamebook by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone.

Deep in the caverns beneath Firetop Mountain lies an untold wealth of treasure, guarded by a powerful Warlock – or so the rumour goes. Many have set off for Firetop Mountain in search of the Warlock's hoard. None have ever returned. Do you dare follow them?

This adventure will take 4 players. The rules will be explained as we go, and characters will be created as part of the game. If you'd like to play, please add a comment directly to this geeklist item indicating your interest.

RPG Item: Numenera
THERE HAVE BEEN EIGHT PREVIOUS WORLDS.

'Each world stretched across vast millennia of time. Each played host to a race whose civilizations rose to supremacy but eventually died or scattered, disappeared or transcended. During the time each world flourished, those that ruled it spoke to the stars, re-engineered their physical bodies, and mastered form and essence, all in their own unique ways'

'Each left behind remnants'

'The people of the new world—the Ninth World—sometimes call these remnants magic, and who are we to say they’re wrong? But most give a unique name to the legacies of the nigh-unimaginable past. They call them...'

NUMENERA

'Set in a far, far distant future, the Numenera RPG puts a new spin on traditional fantasy, creating something unique to reinvigorate the imagination of gamers everywhere. Player characters explore a world of mystery and danger to find leftover artifacts of the past: bits of nanotechnology, the datasphere threaded among still-orbiting satellites, bio-engineered creatures, and myriad strange and wondrous devices that defy understanding. Numenera is about discovering the wonders of the worlds that came before, not for their own sake, but as the means to improve the present and build a future'

'With streamlined, intuitive rules, Numenera allows players to create characters in minutes and puts the emphasis back on story rather than laborious mechanics. Numenera is the latest creation of one of the biggest names in roleplaying games, award-winning designer and fan-favorite Monte Cook'

1 I'll be running the Beale of Boregal scenario which is specifically designed for new players.

2 Characters will be generated together as part of forum play.

3 I and the players need to commit to checking/posting in the thread once a day(more is good too)

This adventure will take 4 players. The rules will be explained as we go, and characters will be created as part of the game. If you'd like to play, please add a comment directly to this geeklist item indicating your interest.

Rats in the Cellar
RPG Item: Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set (Second Edition)

Damn your penchant for ale! "A free night of drink"
Brock the tavern-keep promised, in return for a little help
ridding the cellars of a rat infestation. And so here you
are, stuck in the tavern's cellar while above the patrons
partake in merry- making, feasting, and drinking.
Oh well...the quicker you start exterminating Brock's rat
problem, the quicker you can partake of Brock's ale. And
free ale, at that!

The now legendary B/X set (1981) was my first journey into the world of Dungeons & Dragons. I was 11 at the time - and just fell in love with the Erol Otus cover on the Basic set (the Advanced Set had a Wizard scrying on the scene taking place on the Basic cover which was so cool!). The little 64 page rule booklet that came in the box just fueled imagination. It's my first love - and I'm really excited to be running this game for people who have never experienced the joys of role-playing.

I need 5 players for this fun but super-short (it's a 3 page adventure!) adventure. Character sheets fit on an Index card and we will work on characters as a group via the forums. This is a real classic folks... an old-school RPG and we're gonna game like it's 1981!

RPG Item: Camp Myth
In Camp Myth you play a member of one of the mythic races, either a Centaur, Cyclops, Dryad, Fae, Harpy, Kappa, Kitsune, Leprechaun, Minotaur, or Redcap.

Your parents have sent you to Camp Myth to learn more about the other mythic races and to earn a few merit badges. The first one you've decided to try is Kraken Fishing.

We'll need up to 5 campers to have the most fun with this adventure. We'll start by making characters (don't worry, it will be fast) then we'll go fishing!

Rules taught, no experience necessary. No more than 5 players.

Please post a comment below if you'd like to go fishing for the big one!

RPG Item: Call of Cthulhu Quick-Start Rules
Call of Cthulhu is a horror adventure role-playing game based on the writings of H.P. Lovecraft. The adventure will be set in the 1920s in Arkham, on the eastern seaboard of the United States. It is a world where ancient gods lurk behind the veil of everyday life. In this game, you play ordinary people, investigators, in search of the truth. This truth might get you killed, it could also cause you to go insane.

We will be using the "Quick start Cthulhu" rules. They can be downloaded here. The rules for Call of Cthulhu are quite easy to learn and will be taught as we play. It is a game where wits, gathering information and careful planning matter more than combat. We will decide together if you prefer to create your own character or use a pregenerated one.

RPG Item: Mansions of Madness (2nd Edition)

We will be playing Mr Corbitt, a short adventure taken from Mansions of Madness. Mr Corbitt is a kindly man in a quiet neighbourhood. All is not what it appears though. This adventure is open to three investigators. [/q]

This adventure will take 3 players. The rules will be explained as we go, and characters will be created as part of the game. If you would like to play, please add a comment directly to this geeklist item indicating your interest.

RPG Item: DragonQuest Rulebook (2nd Edition)

After many weeks of travel, the characters arrive in a large coastal town with their resources dangerously low. The characters find an inn and have dinner. After their meal, the bartender starts a conversation with the characters as they are new faces in town. Explaining their plight and need for employment, they are told of the public notices posted in the town square.

The characters adjourn to the square, where they indeed find notices of openings. Only one draws their interest.

ENTERTAINERS WANTED

Seeking skilled male and/or female entertainers for engagement in small settlement beyond the mountains.
Must be willing to travel through rugged terrain. Prima donnas need not apply.

See Rory at the Inn of the Daring Damsel between sundown and closing.

Game would be run under DQ second edition rules, and would probably (though not necessarily) use pre-generated characters.

RPG Item: Do: Pilgrims of the Flying Temple

Do: Pilgrims of the Flying Temple is a description based storytelling game in which you'll take a role of a pilgrim. The pilgrims are children that are adopted by a temple and when they reach teenage, there'll be a rite of passage: The pilgrimage. The temple monks sends pilgrims out as peacekeepers to solve wordly people's problems. They are taught to solve problems without weapons or armor, with ingenuity, compassion and a good heart.

The pilgrims will be helping worldly people in their worst problems and this usually gets the pilgrim herself in trouble as well. Every pilgrim has her own unique way of helping people and getting in trouble. In this world, anything is possible. There's no gravity in the Universe until someone claims a planet for themselves. Animals are floating around space, pilgrims can fly and magic can happen anywhere in any form.

RPG Item: Do: Pilgrims of the Flying Temple
This game is light and easy to learn, no knowledge of the rules is necessary. Character creation is also very easy and does not require any previous experience. This game is about telling a story together, about helping worldly people and each other and growing as a pilgrim and finally making a choice about staying in world or in temple. This all happens by writing one sentence at a time, each player on their own turn. Trouble for each pilgrim will be created by the other players as a group effort.

I'll take 4 players. I'd like everyone to check in on the game daily and post when it's your turn. This game shouldn't take too long to play through, so you're not committing to the game from here to eternity.

Project Ninja Panda Taco is a collaborative story-telling game where each player, acting as a Mastermind, attempts to take over the world, while preventing their Nemesis from doing the same. Yep, world domination through Masterminds, Minions, and pretty much anything you can dream up. Who hasn’t thought “I could totally run this planet and I could do it with Rednecks, a cyborg-cow, and a Nerf football”?

Any Mastermind can try to take over the world but only the smartest and most creative succeed. The Masterminds always need some help to pull off their plan so they ask Minions for help. Minions love to help, and love to receive items for helping, but Minions are also incredibly simple-minded, and may not always help a particular plan succeed.

Enter the world of the Masterminds and find out how you will take over the world.

Return to the Mountains of Madness!

RPG: RPG Geek - Mountains of Madness

The Eye of the Gods. For as long as you can remember, your beloved husband searched for the Eye: the gateway to a new world and a life of everlasting peace. Some say it’s a myth. Others say it existed once but the fates have destroyed it to prevent contamination of our world with a would-be-paradise. But a few believe. Your husband got close - and promised that after he found the portal, he would return and take you and your children through to a safe place, free from the daily worries and dangers that plague the world you live in now. That was almost 20 years ago - and he never returned from his expedition to the Greymoor Mountains - better known as The Mountains of Madness.

And then, ten years ago, your headstrong oldest child got it into their head that they'd find their lost father, and come back to rescue you. Again: nothing. Did they die, or go mad? Or did they simply forget about you and terrible, horrible, no good, very bad Empire that crushes your hopes and dreams underfoot every day?

Well, you're not going to wait around any longer. Now that the other children are grown, the whole family is coming along to find the Eye. You’ve got a guide (and his little dog too). You’ve got twenty years of pent up passion. You’ve got mad hot parenting skillz. Bring on the madness, bring on the pain - this family's getting back together, runaways be damned!

Now, if only those Imperial soldiers hadn’t captured you all at that last checkpoint…

This short adventure is inspired by the January 2012 RPGG site-wide game, RPG Geek - Mountains of Madness. It won't matter if you played that game or not, though: this will be some light-hearted, fast-paced fantastical fun with swords, crazy hermits, and terrifying giants. We'll be using the rules from the great (and free!) Lady Blackbird RPG (which bear no relation to those used in the site-wide adventure). No experience necessary, and the rules will be taught along the way (though, since they fit on half a sheet of paper, that won't take long!).

One more note: this adventure may share most of a name with a Lovecraft story, but it is not a horror game.

The game can seat up to five players. Post a comment below to join the quest...ummm, re-quest...ummm, re-re-quest for the Eye of the Gods!

RPG Item: Deathwatch

Welcome to the Front Lines, Battle-Brother!

For this years PBF Initiative I want you to join the Deathwatch! A group of genetically altered super human soldiers who have one goal in life. Destroy all Xenos and enemies of mankind! For the glory of mankind and the God Emperor.

We will be playing a short adventure but will not be using the rules for the base game. Instead I have opted to keep things a bit easier and will be using a Basic Roleplaying hack to play Deathwatch. This will be an action packed adventure since you will take on the role of a space marine fighting machine.

This game will take on 4 players. Please post to this geeklist to indicate you are interested in playing or to ask questions about the game.

Do you have what it takes?

Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition is the latest version of the world's first HP Lovecraft based horror RPG. Lurking behind the facade of the world we know, alien intelligences with unguessable motives lurk. You'll play as a normal but unfortunate human who comes across an outbreak of the weird and uncanny into common-place 1920s America. The full rules for 7th edition are due for release later this year, but we'll be using the Quick Start rules to play

Call of Cthulhu 7th edition uses the latest version of the BRP rules created back in the 1970s and 80s for RuneQuest. The latest rules feature streamlined character creation, combat and skill system. I've plenty of experience with previous versions, but this is the first time I'll have run 7th edition, so we'll be learning together!

The adventure on offer is entitled Dead Light, the first release for Call of Cthulhu 7th edition. It's set in the Eastern seaboard of the United States in 'Lovecraft Country' in the 1920s.

This adventure will take up to 5 players. The rules will be explained as we go, and characters will be created as part of the game.

RPG Item: Fiasco

Fiasco is inspired by cinematic tales of small-time capers gone disastrously wrong – particularly films like Blood Simple, Fargo, The Way of the Gun, Burn After Reading, and A Simple Plan. You’ll play ordinary people with powerful ambition and poor impulse control. There will be big dreams and flawed execution. It won’t go well for them, to put it mildly, and in the end it will probably collapse into a glorious heap of jealousy, murder, and recrimination. Lives and reputations will be lost, painful wisdom will be gained, and if you are really lucky, your guy just might end up back where he started.

As a relatively new RPG, Fiasco has players set up a situation collaboratively, using dice rolls and charts from a Playset. The playset determines the general concept of the session, and players use the charts to narrow down the concepts until they have a situation ripe for exploring (and exploding!). layers then play out scenes, based on the situation and their own creative decisions. Halfway through some disruptive elements are introduced, and at the end, each character's fate will be determined. There is no game master. Four players will take part in the game, with one experienced RPGer explaining the rules and guiding everyone through the process of creating their own unique fiasco.

The Fiasco text provides playsets, but owning the game is not required for this game. Instead, we'll choose from the many freely available playsets. We'll whittle down the choices to these four:

RPG Item: JP05: House Calls
JP05: House Calls

It’s not so much the case load, the overdoses, and the severe lack of disrespect that walks into this hospital everyday that makes me want to take a bottle of pills to each and every inbred patient here at Mercy General. And it's not so much that health care is a joke, a whole lot of guess work, and the antibiotics du jour that drive most of us to binge drinking, sleeping around, and moonlighting. It's not the free clinic days, the group sessions, and the unending paperwork that convinced me that being a doctor isn't really want I want anymore. It’s not even the way this place is organized with the mirco-managed precision of a Chinese-Italian fire brigade.

What it really comes down to is this: with $250,000 in student loans, what else am I going to do?

RPG Item: WH03: Flight 1180
Fiasco takes to the skies aboard WH03: Flight 1180! In this playset by Fiasco-veteran and writer Will Hindmarch, the airplane serves as a pressure cooker where all the passengers stories are mixed together and set to a boil. You should probably buckle up, don’t you think?

Baggage. Even if you think you checked it all in the terminal, you’re bringing some on board with you. Baggage. Everyone’s got some and in the confines of an aircraft it surrounds us and mingles together. Is this your bag or mine? Is there a better metaphorical juxtaposition in air travel than “baggage carousel” where your personal baggage gets to ride the horsies?

RPG Item: Saturday Night 78
Saturday Night 78 New York City, 1978. Last year, the city endured the chaos of the blackout of ‘77 and the terror of the Son of Sam killings. This year, Studio 54 makes millions by giving beautiful plebs and dazzling celebrities a place to party at $20 a head. Condensed sweat rains from Studio 54’s mirrored-laminate ceiling—sweat evaporated from the brows of celebrities, maybe—and falls back on the dancers below.

This is a time of rock and disco, of reckless hedonism and casual sex, a time before consequences. Debauchees high on blow, poppers, or Quaaludes dance and laugh and lust and cry in swank clubs and dirty dives all over the city. Whoever your characters are in the daylight, come dark they transform into sordid stars or disco royalty, beautiful disasters or pitiable victors, ricocheting off each other into the glittering wreckage of imploded parties. Every Saturday night the city’s alight with spectacular fiascos.

RPG Item: EL01: Transatlantic
EL01: Transatlantic MID-ATLANTIC, LATE DECEMBER 1932

You are a week out of Southampton en route to New York. Your 42,000-ton vessel, Morning Star Lines’ new flagship Leviathan, ploughs through these frigid waters at 29 knots. On this luxury cruiser’s maiden voyage, the Captain has been directed to quietly contend for the glorious Blue Riband — the accolade awarded to the fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean.

Topside, you enjoy a salty Gibson while pulling the heavy double wool of your coat closer to your body. Friends make merry with lively talk amongst themselves — it’s a din barely overheard above the hammering engine and thresh of the ship’s mighty propellers. Spray from the bow’s cleave manages to catch your cheek even this far aft. You smile, playing the cocktail’s onion lightly on your tongue. Your gaze draws across the dull, slate waters wondering at the marvel of it all: New beginnings? Maybe this time things will be different? Perhaps your dreams are within reach? What could possibly go wrong?

Regardless of the playset chosen, you will have a situation you want to play, because you will have chosen the relationships, needs, objects, and locations to be used in your game. Characters can, and probably will, be working against one another, but the players will be working together to produce a story worthy of a Coen Brothers movie.

Obviously, Fiasco can lead to mature themes in play. But if that doesn't deter you, casting will be held in the comments below!

This adventure will take 4 players. The rules will be explained as we go, and characters will be created as part of the game. If you would like to play, please add a comment directly to this geeklist item indicating your interest.

Mouse Guard

The lives of mice are a daily struggle for survival—the weather, wilderness and animals are uncaring and savage. But mice are a doughty people. Though all the world stands against them, they refuse to give up! They have claimed the Mouse Territories as their own: a network of cities, towns and villages where mice thrive and prosper despite all that stands in their way.

A band of selfless heroes makes it all possible. Called the Mouse Guard, these fearless mice blaze trails through the wilderness, escort travelers from city to city, and protect mice cities from predators and the fury of nature. In the Mouse Guard Roleplaying Game, you get to be one of them.

The Mouse Guard Roleplaying Game is based on the award-winning Mouse Guard comic book and graphic novel series written and illustrated by David Petersen. The game is intended for all ages and uses a simplified version of designer Luke Crane’s multiple-award-winning Burning Wheel rules system.

Do you have what it takes to fight for the ideals of the Mouse Guard?

In this particular adventure, you are escorting the Lord Verquam, a well know merchant around the cities of the mice. He is opening up a new trade route, and is eager to see his new warehouse and establishments up and running. You must assure his safety from Lockhaven (the main bastion of the "Guard Mice") to the village of Barkstone.

Of course, that is only how the adventure begins, what twists are turns are yet to be seen!

This adventure will take 4 players. The rules will be explained as we go, and characters will be supplied before the game, and it is first come first selection of the characters available. If you'd like to play, please add a comment directly to this geeklist item indicating your interest.

My Little Pony - Fate Accelerated

From gallery of Shadow Hexagram

Welcome to Equestria everypony! In this realm where ponies, unicorns and pegasii co-exist, many threats are still lurking in the shadows.

Will you have what it takes to go on a fantastic quest to save your town, only armed with the magic of friendship? Will you preserve peace and prevent your place from being destroyed?

To play this hack of this famous cartoon, we will use a system that is particularly adapted to emulate such settings:

Fate Accelerated, or FAE, is a condensed version of the popular Fate Core system (2013 RPG GoldenGeek Game of the Year) that brings all the flexibility and power of Fate in an easily digestible—and quickly read—package. With FAE, you and your friends can step into the world of your favorite books, movies, and TV or you can create a world of your own. And set up is simple—you can be playing in minutes. Whether you’re new to RPGs or an expert gamer, FAE brings something special to the table.

A few things to read before in order to play this game within the 3-month period of the 2014 RPGG PbF Newbie Initiative:

I will only take 4 players at our table.

Character creation isn't very long. If we could have all our PCs (Pony Characters) ready to kick out in a week's time, this would be awesome.

Players & GM (this is me) are required to log on and post at least once a day to keep the game moving.

No knowledge of the rules is needed. It is a completely newbie-friendly game. I'll explain them along the way.

Having fun together is all this game is about. If the magic of friendship makes you feel uncomfortable, please drop me a Geekmail or let's talk about this all together.

More seriously though: please do signal anything you feel uncomfortable with, in private or in our Out-of-Character thread.

The Creed Against Violence: this is a very important aspect of our game. Fights and acts of aggression are not how ponies solve things. It doesn't mean they will fall victim to any acts of violence, but they will find other ways to solve those issues. And honestly, this is something I would love to see more in roleplaying games once in a while.

This adventure will take 4 players. The rules will be explained as we go, and characters will be supplied before the game, and it is first come first selection of the characters available. If you'd like to play, please add a comment directly to this geeklist item indicating your interest.

Trail of Cthulhu is Pelgrane Publishing's role-playing game based on the works of the H.P. Lovecraft and Chaosium’s Call of Cthulhu and using the GUMSHOE system, developed by Robin Laws. Players take the role of Investigators, individuals who have somehow stumbled on mysterious events related to the Cthulhu Mythos.

Whereas, Call is firmly rooted in the 1920s, Trail moves the clock forward to the 1930s. The world is the throes of global economic depression and the rumblings of war lurk just over the horizon.

Beneath all the misery wrought by man, the lurks something far older, far more sinister. Ancient, pre-human dangers exist that can destroy humanity with little effort; our species is momentarily spared only because it slumbers. Most of humanity is ignorant of this. You are not so lucky.

You are a sailor, soldier, or Marine; you are a G-Man; you are a tweedy Treasury accountant. Whatever you are, you cannot find solace in ignorance no longer. You know of the existence of ancient, inhuman beings, twisted cults and sleeping titans ready to wipe us away.

You are Project Covenant.

In this adventure, your Investigator is an agent of Project Covenant, a secret conspiracy within the United States government formed after the federal raid on Innsmouth, Massachusetts that uncovered the existence of clear and present occult dangers to safety of the United States and humanity at large.

The present mission is to investigate and shut down production of a film which has been flagged as a possible occult threat if released to audiences.

I will take up to 5 players and used pre-made characters to get into the game as quickly as possible.

This game has a Mission, the Agency that gives you the Mission, and the bad-ass Agents (you). I think Hollowpoint would make for a nice first-time out PbF because the play is meant to be quick and the deaths even quicker. Character creation appears to be quite easy (and fun) so we should be able to jump right in.

There's no sense in describing the theme of our game, or the era in which it takes place, because ALL of us will be deciding that when things get moving. The graphics above and below are just meant to tease. Really we can go straight up Bond with this or even turn to horror and sci-fi if we want. The only constant is that you'll be a bad-ass Agent.

(When I read this game I imagined Leverage had a baby with Heat. And then the baby dreamed of Cowboy Bebop.)

TOON!

TOON! The Cartoon Roleplaying game is set in the crazy world of cartoons, where anything can and usually does, happen. Animals speak perfect English and are usually plotting to cheat each other, blow each other up, eat each other or otherwise commit mayhem.

But Nobody ever Dies!

You'll be able to play all your favorite cartoon stars that you've seen in the papers, movies or tv.

TOON! Is a Role-playing game, where you pretend to be a hero, pirate, space pilot or whatever...just like you did when you were a kid! An “Animator” runs the game and describes the world where the “Player Characters” participate in.

TOON! isn't like any other role-playing game! In most RPG's the idea is to plot and plan—to think before you act—and make sure your character survives, thrives and becomes more proficient at everything her or she does.

FORGET ALL THAT!

Survival? Who Cares? You can't die, so you've got nothing to lose by jumping right in and having fun!

Think before you act? No Way. If you take the time to think every action through, the game will get bogged down and nobody will have any fun. The action in TOON! Is meant to be fast paced...so always go with your first instinct and write it down, even if it doesn't make sense. When was the last time you saw a cartoon character do something logical?

ACT before you THINK.

It doesn't matter how stupid, weak or inept your character is. Poor die-rolling doesn't mean a bad character. Half the fun of TOON! IS failing...because of the silly things that happen when you fail! So “bad” characters are just as much fun—maybe more fun—than “good” characters.

So to repeat: Forget EVERYTHING you know and ACT before you THINK!

This adventure will require 5 player characters and is taking place on the set of a new movie where several of the actors have been fired and refuse to leave. Rules will be explained as we go and character selection will be first come, first pick of the pre-made characters.

Sirius Recon - An EPOCH Adventure [MATURE GORE/HORROR]

You and your fellow astronauts have been sent on a mission to find out what happened to the foundations of restructuring a planet for colonization, that could be hospitable in the Sirius system. RPG Item: All Flesh Must Be Eaten Revised Edition

All Flesh Must Be Eaten

I don't know how or why

...but the dead

....they walk among us

...and they are HUNGRY!

All Flesh Must Be Eaten is a role-playing game of the horror genre. You are a player character, whose overall goal is to survive, while sometimes achieving smaller goals...such as rescuing others or searching for food.

At the heart of all Role-playing games is the question “What if...”

In the AFMBE world the question is “What if you were faced with a world gone to Hell, where ravenous undead sought living prey?” What if you had to fight for survival, sometimes against former friends and loved ones?

Would you be curious to find out the cause of the horror? Would you delve into the heart of the zombie-infested areas to discover the truth? Would you brave death to end the threat?

What if there were no cause, no solution? Would it be better to simply flee for safety to ensure the survival of the race?

By taking on the role of an AFMBE character, players such as yourself have the chance to answer these questions and more.

In this particular adventure, you are a group of people riding on a Charter bus line, who have been riding on the long path from California to Texas, by way of El Paso. You stop at a small bus station, but no one is there to greet you nor drive the next bus you are supposed to be riding on.

Of course, that is only how the adventure begins, what twists are turns are yet to be seen!

This adventure will take up to 6 players. The rules will be explained as we go, and characters will be supplied before the game, and it is first come first selection of the characters available. If you'd like to play, please add a comment directly to this geeklist item indicating your interest.

The System:
The Pathfinder Roleplaying Game is a traditional role-playing game released as a spin-off of Dungeons & Dragons ("D&D"). Released in 2009, Pathfinder may have become the leading RPG by sales - possibly surpassing even D&D itself. The game features high-fantasy with elements similar to what you would find in popular fantasy movies and TV series (Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit, Legend of the Seeker, Conan, Princess Bride, etc).

The game rules for Pathfinder are fairly voluminous and can be intimidating to the uninitiated, which is why this PBF will be run 'rules-lite'. Tell the GM what you want to do and the GM will try and figure out the most efficient method of legally achieving your goals and even roll the dice for you. All you have to do is focus on the roleplaying and decision making, and leave the mechanics and the results of your actions to the GM.

RPG Item: Pathfinder Society Scenario 5-08: The Confirmation

The Adventure:
The adventure offered is The Confirmation, a Pathfinder adventure for 4 Characters.

An introductory Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for 1st and 2nd level characters.

Almost all Pathfinders undergo extensive training for three or more years to learn the tricks of the trade, and their last test before graduating from the ranks of the initiates to the status of a full Pathfinder agent is the Confirmation, a special research project that involves considerable fieldwork and is designed to simulate the initiates' future work as a Pathfinder. Even the noteworthy field commissioned agents sometimes participate in such trials as a way to familiarize themselves with the Pathfinder Society’s rules and expectations. Although Confirmation is typically an individual affair, the society recently discovered a site on the Isle of Kortos that would be perfect for initiates but perhaps too dangerous to handle alone. Successfully uncovering this site’s secrets will not only contribute to the society’s body of knowledge but shape the exciting careers ahead for each of the prospective agents.

Important things to note:
1) This scenario is designed for play in Pathfinder Society Organized Play, and the players will be required to register as members of Pathfinder Society if they are not already members. Don't worry, registration is free! If you run into any problems, the GM will be there to help you along. At the end of the scenario, the GM will issue to you a Chronicle Sheet for completing the scenario. You may apply the Chronicle Sheet to any of your new characters and the credit will be recognized when you use that character at any officially sanctioned Pathfinder event.

2) Posting rate: In order to be fair to all the other players and to keep the momentum going, players are requested to check in on the thread and post at least once a day on average. From time to time, it is expected that real life will get in the way, and players will be expected to give notice to the others either by posting or a geekmail to the GM. This is not meant as a policing measure, but because we care about you and we wonder if you're ok when you don't post. Rest assured that if you do miss a post once or twice and forget to give notice, the GM will NOT kick you off the PBF . The adventure should take up to 3 months (probably shorter) and that is how long you will be committed for.

3) For your convenience, and so we can get to the action quickly, we will be using pregenerated iconic characters, unless you have prior Pathfinder Society experience and can create a new 'Pathfinder-Society-legal' character ready for play.

4) This should go without saying, but please be considerate about the feelings of other people, even when making 'in character' comments. That said, PBFs are also about being creative and expressing yourself and jointly creating a story. Rest assured that the GM will not be policing and scrutinizing every post for political correctness. Just be yourself. If things get out of line, the GM will geekmail you.

Thank you for understanding and accommodating. To sign up, please post 'Sign me up!' below this geeklist entry! First 4 signups will form the party. See you in Absalom!

RPG Item: Monster of the Week

There are monsters out there ...
and you are mean enough, smart enough,
crazy enough, or hurt enough, to fight them.
Maybe you'll defend your hometown from evil.
Maybe you'll take to the road and hunt them down.
Maybe you have magic powers to fight with.
Maybe your name appears in an ancient prophecy.
One thing's for sure.
You aren't going back to your old, safe life.

S.T.A.M.P. Needs You!
The Supernatural Threat Assessment and Mitigation Protocol is a secret and globally active force against things that go bump at night, during the day, or whenever really.

Led by the mysterious and elusive Council, S.T.A.M.P. sends field teams with diverse operatives into all corners of this world and beyond to fight the threats to humanity which others cannot (or will not) take on.

From gallery of znirp81

But do you have the assets that S.T.A.M.P. needs?

This is your (only) chance to prove it!

...

This is a recruitment drive for the Monster of the Week shared universe of S.T.A.M.P.
On RPGG, most S.T.A.M.P. sessions take place as Voice over IP-run adventures (VoiP); this introductory event is run as Play-by-Forum and presents the rules of MotW as well as the setting, and provides players with a glimpse of what is possible.

Each player creates a distinct Hunter based on a "playbook" template, a recruit to STAMP. After initial training in their specialties, teamwork, and STAMP tradecraft/protocol, recruits will be sent out on a first real mission in teams of three.

All Hunters will jointly go through a briefing, and then be split into teams of three Hunters and sent after a specific supernatural threat. Whoever is still alive after their mission will attend a debriefing and be cleared for full S.T.A.M.P. agent status.

Well done you!

A number of established S.T.A.M.P.-players and Keepers have agreed to contribute and take over tables or play NPCs.

General Information:

Monster of the Week (MotW) is a game powered by the AWE (Apocalypse World Engine), just like Apocalypse World, Monsterhearts, Dungeon World Roleplaying Game, Sagas of the Icelanders, and tremulus. This means that heavy emphasis will be put on the unique archetype of each character, on decisions and their consequences. The rules are simple. Play proceeds by in-character descriptions, the "fiction", which occasionally triggers dicerolls. Combat and, in fact, magic are no exception to this principle. The "Keeper" never rolls dice, but will often ask hard questions, and has their own set of moves to pace the action. 2d6 is your friend here.
While MotW can be blasphemous, graphic and violent, the S.T.A.M.P. shared universe tends towards the pulp side of things. Players will be able to identify their comfort zone and/or triggers.

For more information, read the awesome review here: Hunting vampires, Mongolian death worms, and terrors from the beyond – Powered by the Apocalypse!

To sign-up for this adventure please post your willingness to participate directly to this geeklist item. This game will take up to 12 players. Everybody who signs up will receive the Monster of the Week microbadge. (like so: Microbadge: Monster of the Week RPG fan) Everybody whose Hunter actually survives the mission will receive an Agent of S.T.A.M.P. microbadge. (like so: Microbadge: Agent of S.T.A.M.P)

It Came From the Late, Late, Late Show

Have you ever watched a movie thinking you would do better than the stars? With It Came From the Late, Late, Late Show you can! ICFTLLLS is a game of bad movies in which the players are the stars.

Stunt doubles and commercial breaks. Stock footage and refreshing makeup. Bad dubbing and talent coaching. The world of (bad) movies is at your fingertips. And yes, acting appropriately stupid pays off!

The Movie
Finnish lake in the Midsummer's night. Lots of booze. You wake up in a boat with your memory gone.
Do You Remember What You Did Last Midsummer's Eve? is a movie for up to 4 actors and actresses. Please post your willingness to act directly below on this geeklist (or just to ask questions). The system is taught as we go. The game starts with character creation.

In this mashup made in cybernetically-augmented simian heaven, you'll play as a member of a team of Helper Monkeys in a gritty future filled with all manner of menacing threats.

This homebrew adventure uses the HelperMonkey.com rules, which can be freely downloaded here. In addition to these core rules (which are only 20 pages in length), we'll be using some additional Hats to help add some Psi-punk flavor to the game. Don't worry, everything you need will be provided.

Note: HelperMonkey.com uses Fudge Dice.

The Mission
A message just came in over the HelperMonkey.com network:

#Help this is Private Rufus. Was using the base's mainframe for shopping sites. Need evidence deleted before officer finds out. Caution, robots shoot on site.

Are you primate enough to save Private Rufus from a dishonorable discharge?

This mission is for up to 4 primates.

RPG Item: Players Handbook (AD&D 1e)

Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (AD&D) is a fantasy roleplaying game set in a world of magic, monsters and adventure. You as a player control a character who is a step above the average citizen, has seen a bit of the world and is keen to explore it. You might be a fighter, thief, magic user, cleric or one of many other character classes. Together, your characters stride forth to adventures full of both danger and reward.

The rules used in this adventure are from the first edition dating back to the 1980s and before. An almost identical set of rules called OSRIC can be downloaded free and can be used instead so rules are easily available.

From gallery of sirsly
The adventure:
The Chasm of Eastwold.

This small provincial market town is disrupted after a hole opens up in a busy street following a short earth tremor. Strange smells are witnessed. Rumours are rife. Fear spreads and civil unrest is imminent. The town council are concerned about lost trade. Residents are angry about lack of progress. Nobody wants to go beyond the edge. Finally, the town Marshall appeals for brave souls to investigate and so bring order back to Eastwold...

This adventure will be for 4 new players. I will assume that a player has none or a little experience of role playing games or wants to try something new. Players will generate and start a character from scratch (first level) and be expected to post at least once per day
