Won this in the Humble Bundle giveaway. So far it's pretty fun but also kind of generic and difficult in unexpected ways. Almost like a puzzle/platformer type thing but without a jump button. Or missing a piece of the puzzle. I'm just not good at it - I'm the missing piece. It's beautiful to look at though.

Went back to this game after some time away. It's sort of adorable, a really cute little place to explore, where the focus isn't even on solving the puzzles, but how many different ways can you solve them. Last time I played I had wanted to find all the options in the first level before beating it; this time around I just decided to find a single way to solve each puzzle before moving on, as I was looking to make progress to contrast my frustration with

Ys Oath, where earlier in the week I took down Dularn v2, and then last night beat the penultimate boss with little difficulty. And now I am on the final boss of the game, and holy crap he is all sorts of unreasonable. I tried for at least a halfhour to beat him last night, but even equipped with the one-use-only instant-revival necklace, I didn't even come close. So I ground a few levels today and finally beat it. That was a game with tough bosses.

My SolForge draft is back to 1-3, because I am insufficiently good at it. Hearthstone reset their ladder, which means briefly I'm able to win a few games because I'm super-low ranked again. I beat Saturday Morning RPG, but out of stubbornness and I don't recommend it.

And finally somewhere in there was more Starbound, where I got a character to tier3 in an attempt to catch up to tickmanfan and tankexmortis, who were in the same game as me, but seem to have progressed to tier12 already, and basically beat the game. Anyway, the game is still totally awesome.

And although it's not something I played last week, the current humble weekly bundle is all about multiplayer games, and I'll be looking for people to try Wanderlust ($1 tier) with and put it on a future games played list.

A nice little puzzle game/platformer. It's fun. The puzzles so far have all been very linear and straightforward which is nice, in my opinion, but if I was looking for a serious challenge it would not really come through on that (yet).

I thought I'd pick up a Pikmin game after constantly hearing about them on Nintendo podcasts I listen to. The time limit in Pikmin 1 didn't sound like something I'd appreciate, so I went with this one. The Wii version is basically the Gamecube game upgraded to use Wiimore pointer controls. The graphics are noticeably more basic than what the Wii could deliver. I've played about an hour, so I'm still in tutorial stages, but fun enough.

Yesterday, Steam decided to stop cooperating shortly before my computer in general felt it was the appropriate time to be difficult.

So I let it go for a while and went back to my PS2, putting ridiculous characters through ridiculous matches. It's kind of surprising that even a game from 2009 looked like it was from 5 years before then. Still, people got thrown off of cages and hit with sledgehammers, so there was fun to be had.

Starbound is currently the go-to game for me to play with my wife at the moment. Unfortunately it's such a huge time sink that our board gaming is taking a bit of a hit as a result, but it sure is a fun time sink. We made it to the fourth sector before calling a time out to allow us to do other things. But that moratorium ends today and we're going back in.

In the intervening time I went back and played a bit of Civilization V. I try and use the achievements as a guide to exploring the various options in the game, rather than staying within my comfort zone. This led me to have two very different experiences. The first one was playing as Venice. They are a somewhat weird hybrid between a regular cilivisation and the AI city states that vanilla Civ V introduced into the game. I can't say that I was much of a fan. They are certainly quite powerful. The doubling of trade routes means that you can easily generate obscene sums of money. But the trade off is that apart from the starting city (i.e. Venice itself) you can never found cities, only puppet city states using the Merchant of Venice unit, or gain new puppeted cities through warfare. As choosing city positions is something that is very important to me, and in addition to that I like to micro manage my cities, I felt like playing as Venice was a little to hands off for my liking. Worse still, I opted to go for the Venice-specific in game achievement, which had me conquering the holy city of the religion Venice followed. This was a piece of cake to do, and mostly relied on me never founding a native Viennese religion and then opening up a whole lot of trade routes letting an external religion in. The actual conquest was trivial. My war chest was so large that I could walk all over them in an instant. But I was on such good terms with the other Civ at the time, and they were on such good terms with all the other Civs as well, that my sudden betrayal turned me into a pariah for the entire rest of the game.

I was only going to play that one game of Civ V, but it was probably the least fun I'd had playing a Civ game in such a long time, I felt that I needed to not leave it at that. So I started a game up as the Shoshone. They are almost the polar opposite of Venice. Their expanded city boundaries at founding makes building new cities a breeze. There's no worry about positioning for short-term and long-term optimisation, you can place them in what amounts to their optimal long-term positioning, and they will instantly have access to all the key resources in the 2-3 hex distant range to make the city thrive from the outset. And their scouts are the best scouts in the game by a mile. The ability to choose (from a limited, rotating selection) the output of any goody huts is incredible. It guarantees a turn 1-5 +20 culture boost, which amount to a 15-20 turn head start on unlocking things in the culture trees. And remaining goody huts are guaranteed to offer something useful. No more crudely drawn maps or locations of nearby barbarian tribes. I had my fastest BNW win, at 346 turns (some time in the 1920s I think) as a diplomatic victory. I played on Prince, my default when playing Civs I am inexperienced with, but I think the Shoshone are so effective that I will henceforth only play them on substantially higher difficulty settings.

Had a busy week with work, but made some progress in FFX (finished 4 or 5 temples so far, in Bevelle now). This is primarily for family gaming, as my kids absolutely love the setting, characters, and plot (and aren't bothered by the crappy script). Bad dialogue aside, this really is a great Final Fantasy - the combat system is the best in the series IMO, and the expert version of the sphere grid makes for some interesting development choices.

I've continued plugging away at FTL: Faster Than Light as well, though I'm slowing down a bit after the last couple weeks of heavy play. It took me quite a few tries (on Normal) to unlock Stealth B. And that, of course, isn't the easiest ship to work with - I think I've yet to make it to Sector 5 with it. With Kestrel A/B, Engi A/B, Osprey A/B, and Stealth A completed on Normal (all with AE disabled), I think I'm ready to put this one on the back burner for a while. With so much more to explore, I'm sure I'll be back eventually.

Finally, I finished the last hour or two of God of War (2005) this afternoon. I must be getting old, because the last few fights seemed more difficult than I remembered. I used to be able to blaze through the game on God Mode, but just finishing it on Hard was frustrating now. Oddly, it's only the fights that I've found challenging - I blazed through all the platforming parts of the game that everyone hates and even got the "take no damage on a Hades pillar" achievement. Strange.

I hope to keep working on my backlog of almost finished games and wrap up Pikmin 3 tomorrow as well. Dark Souls after that, though I still have some work to do there.

Played with Seth, SuperChutney, and Peristarkawan. I still stumbled through the game like I did last time, but at least now I remember the differences between the classes. If I had to pick a favorite right now, I'd probably say the Lookout, since it suits my "behind the scenes" play style in team games better than the others.

Played with Rudy. We tried out a "zombie" game type which was pretty typical of zombie mods of FPS games - teams start out relatively even, any humans killed add to the zombie team - and did our usual run of King of the Hill matches. I stuck with my usual standby of Medic, while Rudy mixed it up and played a different class every few rounds. We were enemies as often as teammates because of automated team scrambling.

This is where I put in another call to arms. Anyone else that's into TF2 (or willing to try it) should join us next time. Hang out in the BGG guild chat on Steam and we'll cross paths sooner rather than later.

I finished one more level on Flidais after not having any time to really sit down at this. Once again, I just LOVE the solution I formed and am a little stunned I figured it out.

Nonetheless, I have one more level to solve here before what I assume is a defense, and then... ON TO THE FINAL WORLD

Damn this game is just exciting.

Oh, I just want to add, a thought about the previous level's defense mission: I think that one may actually be impossible without using the control triggers.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
Because the level basically shoots the meteors at you randomly, then ends with a necessarily long sequence that requires you to aim at the same part for a while, I think you have to be able to control the angle of the laser with those controls. I can't see any way the laser could sweep back and forth consistently enough that it kills everything. And that's even IF I managed to make the laser constantly fire (the fuel for it is danged hard to make)

Actually...I didn't get to play any of this game this weekend, but I DID get to spend about 2 hours doing troubleshooting trying to get it to work on my system...

We had some friends over last night, and we played a little bit of QWOP and CLOP for some entertainment. Being social and doing apartment hunting has taken up most of my weekend, so no real gaming for me.

Moar Skyrim!

This is probably the last time Skyrim will be my entry for this list. Pretty far along with my Warrior - having a blast with the Dragonborn DLC (island of Solstheim).

Dragonborn is a must-buy for fans, and night-and-day better than Dawnguard and Hearthfire. I was pleasantly surprised to discover a respec option for perks, which allowed me to pull two perks out of heavy armor, now that my smithing skill is so high that the Juggernaut perks are largely irrelevant for hitting the armor cap. Cool.

I carry around 15 or so Vigorous and Extreme healing potions, on the off-chance I'll run into several high-level mages at once, but I've only had to use one of those potions in a single instance (Necromage and Master Necromancer on opposite sides of me blasting away with Thunderbolt). My default set of gear has no magic resist or elemental resistances, but as a Nord I have 50% cold resist, and as an Agent of Mara I have 15% magic resist to all types. When squaring off against mages, however, I swap in the Dragon Priest Mask Otar, which grants 30% resistance to all three elements, and a necklace dual-enchanted with 42% fire and shock resist. With that setup, I have 87/87/95 resistance to elemental magic, so it really does take a couple of expert level mages nuking me with everything they have to make a dent.

I probably shouldn't carry around 30 high quality health potions, since even Dragon-breath barely affects my health bar, but there's always that nagging thought, "what If I run into 4 Electromages who somehow spread out and surround me!"

laugh

In other news, joined the Stormcloaks and conquered Solitude. Christ that was boring. I wanted to see one of the Civil War questlines, but they are every bit as bad as people say.

Played a bit more of this just to unlock some more cards, try and see what the challenges are all about, and because I was in the mood for something turn based and relatively relaxing. I also played a bit more Poker Night at the Inventory, and managed to win everyone's collateral. It's a game I continue to enjoy, even though I otherwise don't have much interest in Poker.

I recently picked my savefile from this up again after a bit of a break, and played a few hours this weekend. I'm in sequence 5, and taking my time doing this and that in Tuscany; I have two story memories left in the sequence at this point.

I'm still missing eight treasures in San Gimignano, and three of the feathers (or maybe the feathers are in Tuscany at large ... one of them is at the theater, and it's not clear to me whether I can get to it right now or not). I haven't quite figured out how much effort I want to put into trying to find the remaining treasures myself vs. just buying the treasure map.

Other random notes: minstrels are totally just reskinned beggars, which is kind of funny at first but then it turns out that they're still irritating. At least the people carrying boxes aren't generally as bad. The Assassin's Tomb was fun. It's not clear to me whether it was supposed to be possible for me to do that without murdering all of the guards; it would at any rate have been far more annoying.

Although there are some bits and pieces where the controls are still annoyingly imprecise (the rooftop race, in particular, took way too many tries), the experience has so far been way smoother than that in ACI.

After winning Civ V in the humble giveaway I decided to give it a spin. 4 Player small continents game as the Native American Tribe. For Some reason Russia was on my continent too as well as two city states. Pretty early on I got into a scuffle with Russia and only *after* attacking her capitol the game told me "uhm by the way, cities shoot back now. You should only attack them with 4 or more strong units."

Gee, THANK YOU for your timely warning!

Also I invested 250 gold into my nearest city state to become friends only to lose that position the next turn because that amount gives you *exactly* the influence required to become friends.

Since I couldn't afford to renew my friendship this quickly I lost control of them and Russia snapped them away. Great! Most of my gold wasted AND a two front war!

I was able to turn it around and wipe out the Russians after which I was able to make peace with the city state. Now I've got the continent to myself and am exploring the world but my excitement for the game is already thinning. I'll try some more later but so far this is my first disappointing Firaxis game.

My adventures continue. I'm collecting words of power and doing some minor quests in between.

Last night I freed Gray-Mane from Thalmor custody and returned Meridia's Bacon. I think I'll try to complete the quests from Riften, Whiterun, Mage College and maybe the companions. And then head for the civil war before finishing the main quest line.

I mean I'm having fun and there's so much left to do but I'd rather return with a different character than doing everything with this one.

I should really stop picking up this much stuff. I have way more things than I'll ever be able to sell. I also have way more gold than I'll ever need. If I sold all the things I've hoarded I could probably BUY Skyrim from the empire...

And with two sessions during the weekend I was able to play through the whole game. I didn't expect the end to come this quickly but it did. Enjoyed the game again, still have some exploring to do.

I'm still enjoying the resurrection of this old game. Played a couple scenarios and then started a campaign. I guess I've got two parallel campaigns going now--one as the Keepers and one as the Storm Cult.

I was well into the Keepers campaign and enjoying it, when I made the mistake of checking the game settings. In each scenario, I faced enough resistance to make the game interesting; my enemies sometimes hunkered down in their cities, but pretty often they'd put together a strong force and come after me, or they'd harass me with raiders. After dealing with that successfully for several scenarios, I thought, Hey, I'm pretty good at this. But when I looked, it turned out I had been playing on Easy.

Oh well. By the time I finish the campaign I'll be better at it, and maybe I can play the next one on Normal.

I also downloaded Age of Wonders 2: The Wizard's Throne and Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic, just so I'd have them handy on my hard drive. Unfortunately I didn't check the hardware requirements. The games run, but they're slow and choppy on the netbook computer I always use for these GOG games. I remember them being slow and choppy on the PC I originally played them on too, back when they were new. The graphics also look too busy, and I'm not sure I like all the new bells and whistles. The original AoW is very pleasant.

While visiting GOG.com, I noticed some of my games had been updated. I don't know what that means, but I didn't want to miss out on anything, so I downloaded and installed the updates. Afterward I had to reinstall an unofficial patch I use for Master of Magic. I have one for Master of Orion too, but I didn't install that one right away; I wanted to test the original game without the new patch--so I played a short game of MOO also.

Played a bit more in Diablo 3. We're getting most of the way through Act II.

Now that we've stared getting gems and socketing things, I was very happy that they added an option to remove gems from sockets - we were always reluctant to socket things in Diablo 2. Overall I think they may socketing and managing gems much easier, and I'm happy about that.

I'm now really torn over which skills I want to use for some slots - do I want the rapid fire attack that fires off tons of shots, or the cool lightning orb arrows that fry whole groups, or the spinny drone blades? In practice, I'm not sure how much it matter, but they all seem cool and different.

On the other hand, some of my skill slots have one skill that just seems much better than the others.

On another note, I'm being driven nuts by the plot at this point, where you have to help someone who is pretty obviously evil and going to betray you, and there's not even a clear coherent reason WHY you are supposed to help him.

Finished the story on Friday...now the long slog of collecting everything. Load times are a little bit too much in this game, so it makes fast travel and Level Free Plays a bit onerous.
One of my buddies is a huge Warhammer geek, and for some reason or another I hadn't downloaded Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team onto his PS3 for him...so I rectified that on Thursday night. I didn't play, but I had fun watching. I kind of love twin stick shooters...simple fun.
