TF2 - Played with fellow VGGers Matt, Alex, Amy, Adam, and Nick. We couldn't get Mann vs Machine working, so we played payload and king-of-the-hill maps. Once again I went to bed too late and am paying for today. On the bright side, Nick was gracious enough to gift me the Rainblower. If you don't have a clue as to the significance of that weapon, I pity you. ♪ "Fill my eyes... with that Pyrovision" ♫

Rogue Legacy - Still trying to get to the final boss. I have the slime and the fire ball bossed to beat and it's not going so well.

LUFTRAUSERS - Took a chance on this today since I saw it on sale and it looked good. It's a simple and fun arcade shooter that I am enjoying so far.

I finished my first run of the game yesterday and now I'm working on various challenges. At least tentatively, I'd like to meet the highest scoring threshold for all levels, and also speedrun all levels.

Going through some of the early levels with the Chain Gun, War Drum, Stone Serpent, and Mask of Tezcatlipoca (power shot / power bomb / scatter shot) is an outrageously good time. I managed to survive some of the ambush rooms in the spider tomb without getting hit.

Superb game, btw. Easily the best TR ever made.

Update:

Got all the way to the end, and met the highest score threshold for all but two levels. I also did speedruns of a handful, though I need to back and finish the rest.

Fighting the final boss with two Jade Hearts and the Fist of Tezcatlipoca was oh-so delicious. Especially the part where you get mobbed by Lava Golems... The scatter+power shot effect on the chain gun, with regenerating ammo no less, makes that pretty hilarious.

I died once during the part where the individual spike tiles keep shifting. If I can make it through that part then I can easily clear the scoring threshold and unlock the Spear of Light. I got the Spear of Darkness for beating Xolot in under 10 minutes.

I think the only weapons I don't have are the Rail Gun and Spear of Light.

I finished off my German military campaign on a large 'donut' map, epic speed. I started in the industrial era and quickly spread out to capture as many barbarians as I could. Assimilating them and upgrading them into my army. It meant that I didn't have to build any military unit for a long time, although my income suffered in the beginning, I was able to stay afloat with the gold I was getting from the destroyed barbarian camps. Naval power was not a factor in the game and I teched up to get my Panzer tanks as soon as I could, then rolled over everyone in a couple hundred turns. I don't usually use nukes, but I did this time. If you have nukes and your opponent has a larger army than you, you can use it to destroy a good chunk if you place it properly, if you are using it to capture a city that you want to productive, it is too destructive and clean up takes a while. Overall, a very fulfilling match.

I had a moment when my let me guard down and the enemy sunk my best Carrier fully loaded with 4 elite Jet Fighter squadrons with a sneaky sub attack. *note to self, always guard carrier with subs and destroyers.shake

Played around two hours of this today. I'm still not convinced this game is as good as I was led to believe it is... my main issue is with the amount of backtracking you need to do, coupled with respawning enemies every time you re-enter a location. This is definitely in my Top 3 annoying design decisions in games. I'm at around 30% of the game. I'm likely to finish it, but I'll have to see how it goes. If it doesn't pick up mechanically soon, I'll probably be bored of it before it finishes.

I spent a decent amount of time playing Path of Exile with two of my friends. I think I like the game slightly more than I did when I played it last year, but it's not making that easy. I need to punch in an Account Unlock code every time I play, because my IP keeps changing - a minor annoyance, but still. Worse were the random crashes I was getting due to some Creative Drivers - I solved that, but now the game started to hang with some sort of Exception error which I can't even view... so I'm letting my partners in looting down, which I'm not a fan of.

Also played some Titan Quest: Immortal Throne for fun. I really like that game's casual approach to the hack&slash genre.

Before the day is out I'm planning to try out Among the Sleep. It's supposed to be very short, which is fine by me because I'm terrible at horror games. I'm not sure if I'll even manage to get through the rumoured two hours of gameplay laugh

Played with Rudy, Amy, Adam, Alex and Nick. As usual, TF2 is a lot more fun with a group that just wants to play a goofy game and talk trash. This is probably the largest group Rudy and I have pulled together so far for TF2 - the army grows!

The downside is that every once in a while, someone will decide to stand on your corpse and piss rainbows.

Almost to the end of Assault on Dragon Keep in TVHM, so I should be able to go after the high drop rates from the final boss soon. I'm at the point where I can take the chance with Golden Keys whenever I want anyway, but it helps to get something other than pistols and class mods for other characters.

I've been completely sucked into XCOM for the last several weeks now. I made excellent progress with my Classic quasi-Ironman campaign this weekend - my first assault on a Battleship is paused as I type. The game gets significantly easier and less interesting towards the end, especially once you've got multiple high-ranked, second-generation psionic troops with Mind Control. I'll definitely use the Second Wave option (More Than Human?) that makes psionics very rare in my next playthrough. I've also downloaded Enemy Within and will probably give that a try too, though I think EU is a very clean design strategically and is quite playable and replayable by itself. EW has some neat toys, but in some ways I think it's only going to muddy the waters. Amazing game overall, easily the most fun I've had with a strategy game in years.

We also downloaded Mario Kart 8 yesterday for family gaming. By the time it finished downloading, the kids were already off to Grandma's for an event today, but my wife and I managed to give it a thorough testing in their absence. So far we're about 50/50. But we're both such hacks that we only play at 50cc and sometimes only barely manage to beat the AI. The game looks fantastic and it's great fun to play, but the lack of meaningful GamePad use is extremely disappointing. At the very least, I'd have expected that you could race head-to-head with one person on the TV and the other on the GamePad. Nope. Five player? Nope. Any cool minigames/variants that use the GamePad? Nope. Instead you get... a horn. And a map that you won't have time to look down at. It's incredibly sad. As one commenter elsewhere noted, if Nintendo is this lazy and uninterested in doing cool things with the GamePad on one of their premier titles for the system, how can they possibly expect to interest any outside developers in it? I still expect the game will get tons of play with our kids, but it really makes me wonder what the heck Nintendo is thinking.

After watching the (mostly) absurd characters from the pro wrestling promotion Chikara last Sunday, which heavily features 3-on-3 matches, I decided to get back into KoF for some trio matches with characters almost as bizarre. I'm not very good at it in the first place, but it had been a while since I've played a fighter other than Injustice anyway, so I had to resort to Very Easy difficulty. As I usually end up doing in this series, I spent most of my time playing around with characters seeing which ones I might be surprisingly comfortable with and not really making a decision, though Kula Diamond's special attacks are pretty easy to pull off.

I'm nearing the end of this game; only one crystal left to get in the dark world. I think this will be my second time completing the game. It's so highly revered that I thought it would be good to re-visit. It's mighty fine for a game that is over twenty years old! Some of those bosses though...whew! I have to rely on the Megaman tactic of going in with plenty of health restoration at hand. There's no way I could beat some of these guys without health potions! It also helps that I'm playing on an emulator to abuse quick saves. It would be incredibly frustrating to have to traverse the entire dungeon over again after being killed by a boss!

Playing this has made me nostalgic for some older sprite-based games; Seiken Densetsu 3, FFT Advance 2, Breath of Fire 3, Minish Cap...good times.

I finally finished my Classic run on Enemy Within. That was quite a roller coaster ride. I'm glad I did it, but unless I learned from my experiences more than I thought, I think it might just be a tad too stressful to be as enjoyable for me as playing on Normal. So I will probably go back to that lower difficulty level for future plays, and perhaps challenge myself with speedrunning (against the in-game calendar, not my play time).

On the flipside of that though, I kind of wish the final mission was harder. Because the section-by-section thing is so choreographed, it's way easier than the average late game UFO landing, which can force you into simultaneous gunfights with multiple groups of aliens, and not be predictable. I like how the alien placement and movement in Enemy Within creates these dramatic scenarios, but it makes the final mission feel kind of weaksauce by comparison. At least it feels that way given that I know the precise alien placement in that final mission.

The highlight of the final mission in this playthrough though was realising that

the only enemy left alive was a Muton Elite I had under Mind Control. I ordered it to drop a grenade at its feet, and hey presto, game over.

Also in the last couple of days...

Mario Kart 8
It's very Mario Karty, and it's purdy. Until I go for 2-3 star ratings on 150cc, I won't really be able to say much about the influence of the subtler differences. That said, it's great to play with my partner, which is primarily its purpose for me. The track design at least is solid.

State of Decay
Still too early for me to have an opinion on this one way or another as I'm only an hour or two in. So far I can say that there are things I like and things I don't like. What will win out in the end, I can't say. Still, it's passed the threshold test that I'm curious enough to find out. That's a big hurdle for a game to overcome for me these days. So many games...

I was enthusiastic when I repurchased this game from GOG.com months ago. I remembered enjoying it pretty often when it was new, and it continues to be glorified by all the praise its fans bestow upon it.

The first couple times I played the GOG version, though, my spirits were dampened just a bit. The initial build-up was slow, and later the interface made the game tedious. It was still good overall, but these drawbacks caused me to put MOM on the back burner for a while.

But these last couple weekends I've been playing it again--and enjoying it more. Played twice this (past) weekend.

In the first game, I was determined to win by casting the Spell of Mastery. Played with blue and white magic, and as usual I expanded like crazy until I was bringing in lots of gold and mana. Managed to stay on good terms with the other wizards for a long while, but the two females, Sharee and Freya, then declared war on me, compelling me to obliterate their presence from the two worlds. The males, Tauron and Tlaloc, remained peaceful until I started to cast the Spell of Mastery, whereupon they attacked and captured some of my border cities. It was too little, too late for them, though.

In the second game, I decided to try the other three colors of magic--red, black, and green. And I started with the Gnolls as a race, just because I've had the least experience with them. I was playing on Easy, just fooling around and relearning how things work. Merlin shared a continent with me and wasn't too happy about that; he declared war on me early--and soon suffered defeat for it. My other opponent, Rjak, stayed on his continent for half the game, and I got so busy expanding that I ignored him--to my detriment. Well into the game, Rjak's armies suddenly invaded, and I couldn't stop them from capturing all I had taken from Merlin. That half of my continent was inhabited by High Elves, too, which produced all the best troops. By that time, even my elite Gnoll units were weak in comparison to other races' high-end units.

Rjak was relentless too. Turn after turn he'd take my cities. I scouted out his capital, hoping to find it weak, but it was well guarded. I decided I'd have to play defensively and try expanding on the Myrran plane, where a lot of territory was still up for grabs. I didn't know if I could pull it off, and if I could, it'd be a long game.

I had a lone galley parked next to my coastal capital, right across from Rjak's home continent. One turn, that galley was attacked by a trireme. I won, but I wondered what was up. Over the next several turns, more triremes showed up, loaded with powerful enemy troops. Rjak was making an all-out amphibious assault on my capital city! If his heroes and enchanted top-level troops landed, I might lose instantly.

So, I cast Stone Skin and Eldritch Weapon on my galley and attacked the invading fleet. With the help of Black Sleep spells and Web, my galley sank five or six triremes over the course of several turns, and Rjak got no troops onto my shore. He had also shot his bolt, losing his best hero and elite troops at sea. Now it was my turn.

I saved the game and loaded my heroes and best units onto the galley, setting sail for Rjak-land. When my army arrived at his capital a few turns later, the defenses looked formidable. I didn't think I could defeat all those wraiths and priests and other units led by Rjak's second-best hero.

But I did. I lost a hero or two and more than half my army, but I took the city. Since Rjak had many more cities, I expected to only banish him temporarily. Surely he'd cast the Spell of Return and show up again--but by then I'd be in a stronger position. However, for some reason I don't understand, Rjak was not just banished, but defeated. End of game; I won.

All in all it was an interesting and very satisfying gaming experience. I'll be back to play MOM some more--maybe next weekend. Right now I need a break.

Played through this and beat it in probably 2 hours.

I... Liked it... ?

I mean, it was BARELY puzzley and I knew the way it was going to turn out pretty much by level 6, but it looked good and had great music.

But like, in truth, most of the game was "go right to the button that activates the next thing. What? Can't get to the button? Well, I guess you have to move a thing until you can!"

Sometimes you had to find the right thing to move, and other times you had to realize that there even was a thing to move. But overall, most levels were little more than an exploration of how a particular impossible object functions. I did enjoy the box, and the level that was pretty much just a cube, but I find it hard to get really excited about it. And yeah. Very short.

If you are willing to pay 4 dollars for some very pretty art with the occasional puzzle - go for it. This is all I felt like I got from it.

Tried out Payday 2 during the free weekend. Seems like a cool game. It's basically a Left 4 Dead style game about bank heists and other robberies instead of zombies.

Also, played some Dungeon Keeper: Gold Edition (GoG version). Man, there are some weird thematic oddities in this game that really bother me. Like, the way that your dungeon doesn't seem to be connected to the outside world in any way. You gather monsters through a mysterious portal to some kind of monster realm or something. And adventurers come and attack you (even though you are completely isolated and haven't done anything to anyone yet) by digging through tons of earth to get to your lair. And YOU, the player, are not a Dungeon Master sitting upon a throne or something, but rather a mysterious floating hand that casts spells, gives commands, and slaps minions, and you seem to embody the main room of the dungeon itself, the "Dungeon Heart". Maybe I just need to read some background story info for the game or something. Still, it's a really cool game, and (sadly) still one of the best ones out there for evil lair/dungeon building.

Also, Overlord II for about an hour. Not sure if the game is really just bad, or just not my style, but I really didn't enjoy it. The controls for "sweeping" your minions somewhere were plain unresponsive and didn't work very well. And when it did work, the minion pathing was terrible and they would get stuck on stupid little bits of scenery all over. Super annoying. The humor didn't do it for me either.

I hardly played any videogame. I've been to the Koryu Uchinadi Gasshaku (training camp) - 5 days training this martial art. First time I've met Patrick McCarthy, a living legend in martial arts. 6:00 up, training from 8:00-18:00, after that, dinner together. Back home around 21:00-22:00, shower and to bed.

However, I did manage to squeeze in two short skirmishes of CoH, me and another AI American against 2 German AI opponents. Figured I had some reacquainting and practicing to do with this game, since there seem to be some VGGers still playing online on a regular basis.

Lost both matches on a pretty low level. Crept in my bed, knowing I still have to do a lot more practicing before I even dare to get my behind kicked by human opponents. Humiliating.

Between the house warming party at friends, traveling and working on our Iceland vacation photos with the family I didn't get much chance for gaming.

I did however manage to get a few rounds of Galcon: Legends in, tried Draw a Stickman: EPIC (both from the latest Humble Bundle) and continued to work on 10000000 on my tablet.

Galcon was pretty fun until I got to the first three way battle. I had to shift the difficulty down quite a bit before I managed to win that one. Aside from that little snag I like the game. I'm still a bit sad that I've not yet found an android variant of "Pax Galaxia" but this is pretty close. EDIT: I might actually just have found one: Starlink

Brian was busy watching some hockey game (apparently it was important) and so I played ranked matches.

Just so you know, I suck as Wehrmacht. It's just terrible. I always forget my veterancy which is HUGE.

Will edit in more details about Americans later.

I said I'd talk about the Americans but actually it's the Panzer Elite that needs a scolding.

Here's what happens: I get going. I'm winning the beginning of the match. We keep going. Then, he gets booby traps, and then I spend so much manpower on replacement guys that there's no way I can win.

It's ridiculous and even several times when I specifically avoided the booby traps I still lost half a unit of riflemen. What's up with that? If I move in and immediately move out then all 6 of my guys should survive. Seriously. This is a huge problem. I have no way to avoid it. So I'm going to google 'avoiding booby traps' to figure out if there is some way to take them down without taking the point and trying to get away.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that's the main reason I've been losing in the end of the game, and I have no problem with losing guys for not paying attention, but seriously.

With all that extra manpower I could have had more rangers, more Shermans, SOMETHING that could handle his stuff - and I could have taken those points without having to retreat all the way across the map to reinforce first. Well, in those cases where I paid attention.

Again, I'm not complaining about losing men for not paying attention, but if I am paying attention I should be able to get away.

(apparently the way to do it is to go PAST the point and then you can start capping again).

That makes sense - I kept pulling back instead of pushing forward.

Cool. I will totally destroy the next PE player who tries that crap with me. It's perfectly clear to me that had I not been losing guys like that, and had I not been delayed, I would have won that match. Ugh. 50 points I could have gotten easy with a couple quick caps.

I loves me some Fire Emblem. Just got this copy off of ebay for about $10, so I am a happy camper. I've played the GBA sequel already, so we'll see how the first GBA game holds up...so far so good.

Along with Fire Emblem my auction win came with the sequel (which I'll probably sell off as I own one already) and a couple of Harvest Moon games (Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town and its sequel). Played the first one for 15 minutes and will likely never play again. They'll get sold off with the extra Fire Emblem.

Played a bit of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl (Pearl). I've been craving more simplistic games lately, so this is about as simplistic as they come.

Finally, finished off LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 (Console/PC). I quite liked the structure of this game using Hogwarts as sort of the story mode Hub and Diagon Alley as the overall Hub (also, fittingly, the place where you buy everything). The lack of any kind of map is a bit frustrating at times, and also feels like a missed opportunity to work the Marauder's Map into the menu system.

I drove from Saskatoon to Winnipeg and back this weekend, which made for a lot of driving - and not a lot of game playing. However, I still had a couple hours when I got home on Sunday to finish off a game of Faxanadu, which is an old favourite of mine.

I also got a couple games of Hearthstone in. I've just started playing this game, and I find it really addictive. It looks like it'll take a while to get a decent set of cards, however.

In addition to some Team Fortress 2 with some fellow VGGer's as listed above, I played a lot of Card Hunter this weekend.

This is the best free-to-play online game that I have ever played. Imagine a simple card driven dungeon crawler that is a gigantic valentine to the early days of 1st Edition Dungeons and Dragons and that's what you have here. There's even a couple of ongoing sub-plots! One is the sibling rivalry between your GM and his older brother, and your GM's unrequited crush on the Pizza Delivery Girl!

If you haven't tried this, do yourself a favor and give it a look.

I think this is the first ever game I've bought from a brick and mortar retailer, and definitely the first game I've bought on release day!

We've had a lot of fun playing this over the weekend, it's not as easy to set up as Mario Kart Wii, due to the greater range of controller options, but is more customisable, which is nice. And it looks amazing.

Edit: Plus I like the speed in 150cc.

This has been a surprise hit with me. I don't usually like platformers much, but this has an addictive trancelike quality that makes you want to keep going. It's relatively hard for me, even on the easy setting, but I have almost made it to the end of the second world, with a "Perfect" score on each level. However the unlockables are more difficult to get, I've got a few so far. Just silly quirky fun.

Still plugging away at this, hoping to see the end credits before too long! As is common with JRPGs it seems, the story has devolved into something cosmic and the human element has been somewhat lost.

I picked this up in a bundle recently and for some crazy reason I decided I wanted something so light it almost floated away... It's a casual puzzle and hidden object game (though if you really want to, you can skip every single hidden object scene by playing a domino game instead).

I completed the main game in about 4 hours, and the DLC in a further 1 hour.
