What games are you playing for the first time this month, July 2014?

These lists are posted at the start of each month, so that when we start playing a new videogame, we can post our initial thoughts on it. (Thanks to Ncik for the suggestion to change the format).
These don't have to be games that you've beaten, or abandoned.. just simply games that you picked up and started playing this month.

Please feel free to add a new entry each time you start a new game, as this will be useful for generating statistics.

Got this on sale. It's a WiiU launch title. Never played any ME before but could be interesting. Or tragic.

Apparently it's much the same as the PC/360/PS3 versions of ME3. There are a few additions for being a WiiU launch title, like using the Gamepad and an extra weapon. It has a couple of DLCs but not the whole set I believe.

So after a boardgame and keeping half of an eye on the Belgium - USA soccer game I decided that I wanted to play game. I did not feel any empathy to go trucking last night so I decided to start up Portal 2 that I picked up during the Steam Sale. I just awoke a big nemesis so I'm not really that far in the game but I love how it looks and feels. Not sure if I will succeed in finishing this game but I love playing it for now.

This is a science fiction rogue-like in which you play an explorer who is delving into an ancient, alien, research facility trying to find the cure for a zombie plague that has struck your adoptive home world.

I picked this up during the recent steam sale, and, so far, I'm really enjoying this! The challenge level is everything you'd expect from a rogue-like, including the danger of starvation! This is one that I will probably be playing a lot more of in the future.

We started playing this yesterday with my SO. I had tried it a bit earlier, but I don't count 30 minutes and not making a lot progress as really playing it, so I'm posting it as a new to me in July -game. So far we've really liked it.

I won this in the Games for Geekgold lottery back in August 2013 and only recently got round to trying it out... it's a zombie shooter with a 3rd person isometric view and reminds me of a cross between Killing Floor and Diablo games.
I've only played about 30 minutes (though steam lists it as 2 hours because I initially ran it to collect steam trading cards).. and I've only tried Barricade mode, where you defend a 'barricade' against wave after wave of armed and un-armed zombies... Machine-gun zombie is particularly nasty!

It's kinda fun single-player but it probably works better in co-op mode. I'll definitely give it some more play and at least try the other modes and maybe set up a multiplayer game.

This looked like an interesting game, but I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to play it, since I don't really do horror films either. I started playing today and it turns out is very scary for someone like me. So it might take me forever to actually get it played, since I need my SO to sit next to me when I play and still I can only take it so much at one time

A Source Engine based game that started life as a Half Life 2 mod, in which the Axis and Allied forces use dinosaurs as part of their arsenal... and who doesnt' want to play as a dinosaur with a 50 cal machine-gun mounted on his back?

It was a bit of crazy fun for about 3 hours with some other VGGers and I look forward to getting in some more multi-player gaming of this title. Not bad considering I got it free as part of a Bundlestarts and PC Gamer deal.

I've had this in my steam library for almost a year, having picked it up in a Bundlestars bundle. It was recommended again a few months ago when I was looking for a single-player game, so today I fired it up and played about 45 minutes.

I am enjoying the sniper aspect of the game, but I quickly learned I don't have the patience for the stealth aspects of the game... and it doesn't seem to be the kind of game you can brute-force it, like perhaps Deus Ex:HR.

I'll give it another go, but I may have to chalk it up as one I don't have the right temperament for.

Well, another game I got during the Summer sale due to its sheer ridiculousness has impressed me so far.

The introductory mission has you, leader of the Third Street Saints gang and President of the United States, taking part in a raid on a terrorist cell containing a nuclear weapon which is ready to attack Washington. You stop the attack after the launch has started by jumping on the rocket and defusing it in midair, then fall through the roof of the oval office and land directly in the chair at the desk, after which you kick back and congratulate yourself on a job well done.

Then things get weird.

In the next scene, 5 years later, aliens attack the White House, eventually imprisoning The Most Badass of Presidents in a virtual reality to keep him-or-her docile. Through flaws in the programming, however, you are able to get Matrix-like abilities, like super speed and the ability to jump over buildings which is so incredibly awesome. You can also summon cars to your location and change the look of your guns to anything from Tommy guns to rubber band shooters, because none of this is real, so why not?

Saints Row: The Third was fun, with a take on open-world games that fit my sense of humor and love for stuff that's goofy for the hell of it. Saints Row IV blows it out of the water.

This game is wacky fun for those who like competitive first person shooters. Inject dinosaurs into a standard WWII shooter and you have Dino D-day. This game was recently for free and I'm glad I picked it up. I'm not sure I would pay very much for it all. The game itself lacks a lot of polish. It is another fun game to play with VGGrs.

I'm surprised this has taken me a while to try this game. Path of Exile is a pretty standard Diablo clone. My only disappointments are that the classes have set character and can't be gender swapped. I'm also not a fan of limited inventory space and especially not a fan of inventory tetris.

External image

The passive skill tree is mind boggling big and complicated. It makes leveling up intimidating and potentially time consuming. I've been trying to avoid that by throwing it open finding the first really cool thing, spending my points and fleeing from the system.

Despite my minor disappointments and complaints this is a fantastic free to play game!

So after finishing Portal 2 I decided to install Guacamalee and play it. Almost at the end of chapter two. Since I played a Luchador in Monster of the Week twice I love them so this game has a real good feel for me.

I also love the old games that makes you jump, fight, collect coins. Looking forward to the rest of the game and see if I can finish the story. The story doesn't seem to long so I think it will be doable for me.

How refreshing! A visiual novel in which you play a princess who has to take on the actual responsibilities that go with the title!

I've groused elsewhere about the artwork, so I won't rehash that too much here.

I really enjoy how much your choices matter in this game, and I'm looking forward to a run where I actually manage to help the poor thing survive!

It's a Sierra style point and click adventure. The first puzzle

nearly put me off the whole thing.

I haven't played a game of this style in years, and perhaps I'm too used to either inventory or interaction puzzles that don't involve that particular sort of environmental manipulation.

I also don't like the main character much. They're just too glum and defeatest for me, and I don't like that I can't take certain actions because they're psychologically incapable of it. Getting to know this genre again may ultimately mean that I discover it simply isn't for me.

Note: Apologies for the repost for those participating in the VGG QOTD threads.

Adam keeps recommending this game, so I thought I would give Card Hunter a whirl. It is a free browser based game that is a combination of the battles of a tabletop RPG games and a CCG. If you are an old school RPG player as well you will find it particularly amusing. Each of the adventures comes from a module with the old school art styles. The modules are run by Gary, the young Game Master, with lots of advice from his arrogant older brother. (The staggering arrogance of the older brother seems even funnier if you've been in the tabletop RPG community for a while.)

It has been a tremendous amount of fun so far. Beware it can be a time sink! It has kept me up far too late the past couple of nights! laugh

There is a multiplayer mode that I haven't even touched yet. I can't speak to that.

Actually, the second sequel to this game, if I'm not mistaken: AGEOD's Civil War II.

It's my first-ever Steam purchase. I bought Civ V on a disk and had to open a Steam account to run it. That was a few years ago, and until now I've never done anything else with Steam.

I've been a wargamer for over forty years and a military-history buff about as long, and the Civil War is what I've read the most about. Lately I've had an urge to play an ACW game, but after setting up the board game The Civil War 1861-1865 and reading the rules, I just put it away again. I like A House Divided: War Between the States 1861-65 (and own three copies of it), but it just sits in the closet. I figured maybe a computer game would do the trick for me.

So far, I've only gone through part of the first tutorial. It's a game that will clearly take some study and practice and a lot of patience. I'll also have to get around to closely reading the manual. But last night I just wanted to make sure it'd run on my netbook computer--and it does, barely.

One problem with this and my other Steam game (Civ V) is that they're designed for more powerful computers. Each one takes about five minutes to load before I can start playing, and then play is notably slow--though not so bad as to make it unplayable. I'll have to get into the settings of this new game and see what I can do to speed things up. I don't care about visual effects (and this game isn't impressive that way anyhow), so it'll be a plus for me all around if I can turn off animations or whatever.

I haven't played a strategy-level wargame like this on the computer for years. It'll be interesting to see if I take to it or not.

Steam tells me I've been playing for 94 minutes. In that time I've earned the die 20+ times achievement, and I consider it a great success if I can afford to upgrade anything at all after a run.

This is going to be an interesting intersection of my positive and negative preferences. I'm very fond of roguelikes and permadeath in general, but 2D platforming is something I'm more lukewarm on. So we'll see how it pans out. I just found a blueprint for a piece of gear that will take my armour stat above zero. I'll be interested to see how that affects my survivability, when I can afford to buy it.

This is a game that I followed the developer's blog while it was being made. I like me some city-sim style gaming, and this seemed to fit the bill nicely. In employing a pre-industrial setting, it justifies operating on a small scale, and basically makes every person count. The hardest achievement in the game appears to be getting to a population of over 500 after 200 years. So that should give you a fairly good idea of the scale the game operates at.

I like that you can click on any person and follow their lives. While everything is greatly abstracted in service of making a playable game (citizens reach working age within a few "years" of being born, iron doesn't require smelting, food doesn't spoil, etc.), it still manages to convey a sense of building a community. I can a couple of false starts, where I did things like run out of tools and warm clothes so my first couple of settlements ground to a halt. It didn't take me long though to get a feel for things. I now feel like my current attempt, while small, is providing a nucleus of a settlement that I can grow to at least a couple of hundred. As I am on a small map, I think I will hit my growth limits due to my inefficient resource utilisation before I can get much further than that. But with any luck, I can take what I learn this time around and apply it on the larger scale.

As a fan of the Uncharted series, I've been told this is the next best thing until Nathan smarms his way back onto my console. The last Tomb Raider game I played was the very first one, back in the Jurassic Age. Really looking forward to this.

Last night I almost started up Devil May Cry again, but decided against it. Since I've completed both the main game and Vergil's Downfall, rather than keep it as my main single-player game and collect items beyond when it's fun, I'll let it lie for now. I decided to jump into something very different and went with Rogue Legacy.

I only played for about 20 minutes before I called it a night, and managed 5 or 6 deaths already. Obviously that's not enough time to really unearth the secrets of the game, but it does seem like it will be entertaining to continue to slowly develop the family tree of adventurers until one can survive for longer than a few minutes at a time.

I've only played about 50 minutes of this game, but so far it's totally awesome! The highly stylised, dime-novel'esq graphics are beautiful... the FPS action is really good, and the Narration is excellent.

I've also had 2 "gunfights" so far... I managed the 1st one against Pat Garrett after a couple of attempts, but the 2nd, against Deputy Bob, I found really hard, with the added "hand speed" factor as well as the focusing and quick drawing... still it's an awesome mechanism.

So far it's 3 quid well spent!

I'm surprised to be saying it, but Arkham City is on shaky ground with me at this point. I'm not yet past the point where it's holding my hand, so it might be a bit soon to judge. But coming off a marathon session of completing Darksiders II into Arkham City had been a bit of a rocky road. Setting aside the fact that these games treat women terribly (I knew that going in, and can at least partly compartmentalise), it's the little things that are getting to me. This is the first third-person action game apart from Darksiders II I've played in a couple of years, and it's making me realise how well Darksiders II managed to get feel right, where this just doesn't. The move/turn mechanic and how it interacts with the camera feels really clunky at times, and the goons take way too many punches to go down, with efficiency and skill having no real impact on the outcome. Sure, there were these kinds of fights in Darksiders II as well, but they were always either mercifully short, or presented some small measure of challenge. Goon fights here seem to do neither.

As soon as I get outside, it all just feels so noisy. I'm supposedly moving through the early set up for the narrative, and going through the semi-tutorial content, but there's Riddler stuff absolutely everywhere. Rather than feeling the freedom of an open world, this game seems at once to crowd me in with stuff to do well before the game provides me with the agency to make any choices. I don't know if this is a bad intro sequence combined with an compatibility between me and the controls, but things better improve for me soon, or else this is going on the abandoned list right quick.

I tried out this game last evening? What the hell? Really this is one hard game to play. I get slaughtered every time I turn a corner. Plus the music and the colors make me pepped up like hell. Not sure what to think of this game.

I took a quick break from Rogue Legacy earlier to try out the first mission of Payday. Since there isn't a tutorial and I figured bank heists would be pretty complicated, I tested the waters on Easy difficulty. So far, I like it, but I imagine it will be much better with three partners in crime. Despite the game encouraging taking hostages, I seemed to do fine being a bullet-spewing maniac.
