What games are you playing for the first time this month, August 2014?

These lists are posted at the start of each month, so that when we start playing a new videogame, we can post our initial thoughts on it. (Thanks to Ncik for the suggestion to change the format).
These don't have to be games that you've beaten, or abandoned.. just simply games that you picked up and started playing this month.

Please feel free to add a new entry each time you start a new game, as this will be useful for generating statistics.

Played the new edition with updated graphics. Like the new graphics, it is better, but having a retro look to it. And still a good game. Will soon also try Wasteland 2.

This has been on my radar for a while and I finally picked it up in the Steam, Games Workshop Daily Deal...

I played a game on easy that lasted about 30 minutes... I reached the second deck of cards and got maybe a third of the way through deck 2, but died due to radiation.

Definitely will give this one another try...

I actually tried this game once in January but it didnt hit a chord so I stopped playing. Tried it again a week ago and it's just what I was looking for. It's weird trying to match mood and video games; reminds me of choosing movies.

Another game I got throught he summer giveaway and as my truck save file is still on my other pc I needed a new game. I have limited experience with strategy games and in this half an hour it really showed. Got my team completely killed twice on the same first mission.

I will be needing to learn how this game works and where I can get into cover and how to get my soldiers to shoot the enemy while not getting shot themselves.

Strange thing is that the game suggests to continue the game while it's my first game and you just start the first mission. Some little intro would have been nice.

One of the few games in my steam collection that my office PC will run, so I installed it and gave it a try at lunchtime.

I'd played the old Bard's tale RPG games, but this seemed to be a very different style of game. The graphics are obviously better than the old games, but they are pretty poor by modern standards, and I didn't really like the character of the Bard in this game... The voice acting was good, but because of the Bard's character I didn't enjoy the dialogue and there were a lot of in-jokes and references to other games, making it much more of a tongue-in-cheek parody than a serious RPG.

I played about 45 minutes and in the end I decided to uninstall it... I got it from a humble bundle so I have no problem abandoning it... it does apparently include the original Bard's Tale games as well, so I may give them a try at some point.

Amy and Rudy were both experienced Bank Robbers, while David and I were complete noobies... though I don't think that showed too much...

We had a blast, despite getting our butts kicked quite a bit by the cops... I think we restarted the first mission 2 or 3 times before we were able to get out of the vault and away with the loot.

Definitely going to keep this one in rotation and look forward to some more multiplayer in the future.

Looks like I missed this one too... It's another casual game that is light enough that my Office PC could handle it. I've played for about 2.7 hours so far (according to steam).

It's a fish themed defender-style 2d side-scrolling game in which you have to eat other fish in order to grow and be able to eat bigger fish. Each level there are 3 or 4 sizes/grades of fish, of which you can usually only eat the first size to begin with, until you've eaten enough to grow and can prey on the medium and then large fish. There are often a few other bigger fish that you can't eat... like the Barracuda and the Shark. there's kind of a story in which you are trying to track down a mystery fish, but I've not been paying too much attention to it really... it's mostly an excuse to change scenery and change the type of fish you are playing as.

I've played for about 2.7 hours so far and got about 2/3rds of the way through the game, and have recently moved the game to my "unfinished" category on steam in favour of trying some other games.

My kids (4 and 1) love the Despicable Me movies and the minions in particular, and this game somehow made it onto our family tablet. I've played it a couple of times for short bursts, usually when I've done using the tablet for our daily bible reading.

Minion Rush is a Jetpack Joyride style action roguelike game in which you must steer your minion through a series of randomly generated obstacles. moving between 3 lanes and jumping, ducking etc. when appropriate.

Video Game: Despicable Me: Minion Rush

The game is really well done and a lot of fun to play, but it is one of the worst examples of a F2P game in that they really try to push the in game purchases... there are lots of nag screens/buttons in between the levels, and how my kids haven't managed to purchase anything in the game I don't know.. it's hard enough for me to work out which button to press to continue the game without purchasing stuff!

Having completed Van Helsing, I decided I should continue my play through of the Assassin's Creed games... so installed AC: Brotherhood and fired it up... however, after all the shenanigans of updating uPlay, having it patch the game, and solving the "uPlay has stopped working" problem when I tried to log in, I only actually got to play for 15 minutes!!

In that time Mario Auditore managed to push me off a ledge while I was following him and I got taken down by the guards. eejit!

I've not yet fired up the game again as it is competing with Space Hulk for my Single Player time... but I will play it.

I was checking games using "Can you run it" at http://www.systemrequirementslab.com the other day, and it turns out that my office PC can run the Shadowrun reboot, so I installed it and this lunchtime I fired it up and played for about 55 minutes (I get an hour for lunch!!).

I am really enjoying it so far... the game is an isometric RPG adventure game, with turn based combat. The Dead Man's Switch story is fairly neat, and the dialogue choices seem to have been pretty interesting so far.

Video Game: Shadowrun Returns

You also get thrown into the combat pretty early on, as part of a flashback sequence, which serves as a good learn how to fight sequence.

I'm excited to play this more and I've already added the DLC campaign to my steam wishlist.

This is a pretty bad game. I went in with low expectations and even those have yet to be met.
The gameplay is pretty darn clunky. You can tell that they had the Batman Arkham and Devil May Cry games in the back of their mind when they designed some of the combat, but fell short on execution. It's not the worst combat system, but for how late in the PS3's life cycle it came out, it should be WAY better.
The writing is my other beef. Deadpool isn't the subtlest of characters by any stretch of the imagination, but this game is so ham-fisted with every word spoken. There have been moments that shine through, but they are far too few and far between. Most of the time I feel like they should have Foghorn Leghorn pop in and go, "These here are, I say, these are JOKES, son. Jokes, that is."

All in all, it's not a good game. The graphics aren't that good, the gameplay isn't very good, the writing isn't very good. I won't be surprised is this gets abandoned before too long.

This is so much more like it. Having now played some DMC, I can see that Deadpool very much wants to be DMC...and fails.

The controls feel pretty tight when in combat, but I don't like the jumping; it feels off somehow. There is some pretty minor platforming so it's not a big deal, but it still feels a little wonky.

I've been watching a lot of 80's fantasy action flicks (Highlander, Big Trouble in Little China, Flash Gordon, etc.) lately, so the dialogue and story is fitting right in for me.

I'm digging this game.

This is actually my second attempt to start playing CK2. The first time however stalled out after going through the tutorials, as I got a really nasty cold almost as soon as I was ready to start the game proper. It was all I could do to manage to keep my wits about me while travelling to set about learning the ropes in a Paradox game.

I have now started my first proper game. I read that Ireland offers a gentle introduction to the game, as you get some time to avoid getting trapped between large empires, and can work on learning the ropes from a small independent duchy rather than launch right into empire management. I married into the royal family of Wales, and with the help of my father-in-law's army I was able to press and win a du jour claim. My son dislikes me, so I need to work on that so that I get some time to pad out the succession line of my dynasty before he decides to kill me and take over. I'm very much liking what I see so far.

Started this up last night. They used the same basic layout for Hogwarts castle from the first game, so that is good and bad. Good because I know where I'm going, and bad because I've played this already...give me something new.
This game also follows the formula from the first game where you are not ever QUITE sure when you are actually in a level or when you are just doing a pseudo side quest.

This is the second last LEGO game for my year of LEGO games...my quest is almost at an end.

Got this game for the Xbox360. But controllers are not my thing. I have even problems walking through a door! WASD+mouse for me!

Anyway, feels to me like a typical Xbox game: the cutscenes are so long and the gameplay sometimes is more of an extension of the cutscenes. So to me it feels like I'm in an interactive movie, more than in a videogame. Not a bad thing, mind you, just different from my PC experiences.

I'm not far in. But seems to me like a great Western. With its typical videogame quirks. Example? I hadn't fired a gun in the first 10 minutes. So when I walked a street, I pulled my gun and shot a stray dog. Immediately a $5 bounty was raised for me and within the minute the sheriff and deputies were shooting me. Not even trying to arrest me or anything, no, shooting me over a dog and a $5 bounty. I did get a honor reward somehow, for shooting the sheriff in self defense, I think. Ah well. Dead within minutes and new spawn from my last save, prior to shooting that poor dog...

Final verdict: although I would love to play this one, the last Tomb Raider and some other 16+/18+ games which I got when we bought the Xbox, I think I'm going to sell these games. My son is too young for them, and I'm too old for the Xbox360 I fear...

This is going on a few lists today, since it's such a short game. It definitely makes the most out of those few hours, though. The controls are easy enough to use, and though controlling one brother with each of the controller thumbsticks can lead to some weird movements, very rarely does that work against you. The game is also fairly easy, but this isn't about the difficulty, it's about the journey of the two brothers as they search for a tree that has the power to heal their ailing father.

The plot and the environments are very reminiscent of fairy tales, and the gameplay does a great job of making you feel like you're playing a co-op. Unlike a lot of the games I've enjoyed recently, this one doesn't require an appreciation for crude humor or excessive violence. I can go ahead and say I recommend that everyone try it out, though you do need a controller to play it.

So far this game is to the third-person action brawler what the Sonic games are to 3D platforming. Compared to the great examples of the genre (even ones I don't necessarily like) the controls are floaty, it makes extremely odd use of the right analogue stick, and the game systems just don't quite come together. Even more strangely, some of the cutscenes feel like they may have been put in there not to deliver narrative, but to cut whole levels out of the game as if there devs realised too late that there game had pacing issues, and sacrificed whole sections to keep it from dragging. Despite all this though, I'm oddly enjoying the experience. I feel a bit of a hypocrite, as I can see that this is but a mere shadow of a game in terms of polish and depth as something like Arkham City, which ended up rubbing me the wrong way one time too many. I'm also only an hour in, so the rough edges, of which there are many, could eventually get to me before I reach the end. We'll see.

A fun little distraction that takes every 'one versus many' scene you've ever witnessed in a martial arts movie and plays it out through a simple, but surprisingly deep two button, rhythm based control scheme. It really is a blast if you have any liking for the genre at all.

Yeah, I guess I'm a bit behind the times here. After picking up the PDF rulebook to Numenera, I've been on a sci-fi/fantasy kick for inspiration on what I can include in that game, so naturally, I went for the epic trilogy that I know I'm somewhat obligated to play anyway (partially because I already purchased all three games, so I need to get my money's worth eventually).

After getting used to the extensive character customization in Saints Row IV, and the clean visuals of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, the lower resolution and lack of controller support of the PC version of Mass Effect wasn't exactly welcoming, though I expected the visuals to be a little clunky since it's 6 years older than what I had just completed. Knowing I was in this for the long run of three separate games without the ability to change character attributes on a whim as in Saints Row, I started trying to make a male character. After starting the game three different times and deciding that the guys look like melted garbage no matter what, I ended up giving in and making a female character instead. It really makes no difference in the long run anyway, though I have heard (mainly on VGG) that the Fem-Shep's voice actor is much better than her male counterpart.

I'm probably about an hour and a half into the game right now, with a little extra tacked on for all of the times I went back to the drawing board with Shepard.

I've never played any of the Etrian games, so I wasn't sure what I was getting into. It's certainly different than I was expecting, but I'm not too surprised by it at the same time. It's an Atlus game, so that comes with a certain template which always seems nebulous at first, but they always allow you to click through all of the options to see what they all do.
I kind of felt like I was thrown in the deep end when I first entered the Labyrinth...and then you are given some books you're told to read, but I can't seem to do anything with them. Trial and error allowed me to map out the first floor of the dungeon and complete a few requests. I'm still trying to feel out the different classes, and there are quite a few right off the start. SO I just made a basic RPG team with some fighters, long range, healing and magic attack...classes I kind of understand. Since then I've added a ninja, gladiator and a farmer to the team.
There definitely seems to be characters that are suited more for exploring and mapping out the dungeon, and characters you take in to deal with special areas you've found (the farmer can collect plant material, etc). Lots of back and forth, in and out of the dungeon.

There's a whole seafaring section that I've only dabbled in as well. I need more money before I tackle that much further.

I see this being a time suck for a while to come. I do not mind in the least.

I picked up (more than) a few pinball tables in the weekend Microsoft Studios Steam sale and decided I'd give the game a try... So far I'm enjoying it quite a lot... it does pretty much everything I think I'd want a pinball videogame to do, and has a huge variety of tables... granted you have to pay separately for each table you want, but I picked up enough in the sale to keep me going for a little while (13 in total, including one that I think comes with the base game).

It's been a long time since I've played a pinball videogame (something like Pinball Dreams was the last one I played). and I almost never play real pinball... though a couple of months ago, at Grand Rapids airport, I did introduce my 4 year old to pinball by means of the Iron Man 3 table in the waiting area.

The 3D graphics are very good (better than the top-down 2d approach), and I like that you can change the camera view/angle of the table.

So far my favourite tables are Plants Vs Zombies, and Captain America.
