I played a bit of MH as Storm, finished up the main story and made level 30. We were busy at a wedding most of the weekend.

Actually Frozen Cortex.

I'm enjoying the new rules, the tournament started last night, I'm doing pretty well for myself.

Had a match against a new player and pretty much slaughtered him. It was 26-0 at the last turn break, I think he'll get some points though. I just have to take the ball away from him or he needs to score 27 points, which is a lot.. not sure it's even possible with the field.

So I had a game with him, and he moved his guys just to the side so that when I sent a defender in to blitz, the defender picked up the ball instead of his team. Which is AWESOME. Turned that into 9 or 11 points, I think.

Had another play in the tournament where I scored 15 points in a single offense without turning the ball over. The bonus areas practically lined themselves up in front of me. The trick is defending against him doing the same thing back at me.

I'll be making videos of all the tournament games, I'm really excited about that.

Back to FTL for me after a couple months off. I picked up where I left off and finished Mantis A/B and Slug A/B in Vanilla, then decided it was finally time to try out AE (though I haven't played Rock, Lanius, or Crystal in Vanilla yet) and started back at the top of the ship roster. Finished Kestrel A/B/C, Engi A/B/C, and am working on Fed A now.

Even though my hatred for Engi B will never waver, I remain incredibly impressed with FTL. After easily 100+ hours, I still have so much to do and still find so many opportunities to learn. Absolutely amazing.

I'm especially psyched at the moment because my Fed A run found the Damaged Stasis Pod in Sector 2 and then hit the Zoltan Research Facility before leaving the sector. That means I've got a Crystal crew (for the first time ever) and only need to find the Rock Homeworlds to unlock the Crystal Cruiser. It could happen! Probably won't, but it could.

Inspired by Andy and Kevin's comments in the QOTD thread about the horrors of playing this game with Rudy, we managed a 4p run this evening with myself, Matt, Luke, and John Rudy. And although we were playing some of the slightly more difficult levels (as opposed to the first few levels), I have to say that I thought we really did horribly. Just, constant dying everywhere. Once we got to a level where the authorities had guns, and not just sticks, we totally failed to progress.

Our specialists included:
Myself - The Alarm-Tripper. Running into rooms like an idiot, tripping all the alarms, and frequently also got shot.

Vyran - The Non-Bandager. Gathered bandages, then stood over dead bodies and tried to revive them the slow way instead, and frequently also got shot.

Tickmanfan - The Eternal Corpse. After being brought back to life, Rudy would just sort of stand there not realizing he'd been healed, and frequently also got shot.

Paralipsis - The Planner. Busy planning while everyone else has already run amok, and (thanks to extra alarmed guards courtesy of yours truly) frequently also got shot.

Finished Watch Dogs.
The last missions were fun and exciting, and the game wrapped up well enough...roll credits.

Credits rolling...
Credits Rolling...

Tried pushing every single button on the controller.
Fine, I'll let it sit.
10 minutes later it is mentioning everyone from the Czech version, the French version, the German version, who does the accounting at Ubisoft, who walks their dogs when they are on vacation.
After about 20 minutes, I just killed the game.

Pissed me off that they think my time is of no importance and I should sit there for 30 minutes if I want to continue on the journey. I despise designers that think you should not be able to skip diatribe scenes and never-ending credits.

I sold off my copy almost instantly after that.

Picked this up cheap for the WiiU. Only a short way in, but so far it is hands down my favourite LEGO game. I really like that it is its own thing, not a movie tie-in. Instead it is an original cop story but with a huge number of cop story references thrown in. Graphics look really nice, fully voice acted, and hilarious! Excellent use of the Gamepad too.

Path of Exile - Still playing the one month race with Alex. I got my character to level 80.

Payday: Heist - Played with Matt and Amy. This is a fun game, but not one I am good at tired, because I cannot concentrate on objectives, I can only kill. Needless to say I had the most kills every single time but not much else. The last mission we played was ridiculously hard on normal difficulty. I ended up raging and going to bed.

TF2 - Played with Amy, Nicola, Matt, and Nick and his friends. The most memorable map was the Halloween map Amy had us playing. I still have no idea what was going on.

Manaco - Played with Seth, Matt, and Luke. The first few seconds are always careful until someone trips an alarm, and then we run around like our bodies are on fire. This is another game where sleep affected me greatly. It got to the point where I could barely function, as Seth pointed out in his post.

Started this up on the weekend as a change of pace from Diablo. I've just about got all of the story missions finished for the first time...then starts the REAL task of 100% this sucker.
This game is a little more difficult than the first two Star Wars games. There's a lot going on all the time on screen, and it's harder to deflect blaster fire as a Jedi. It also seems to be a LOT more difficult to collect studs to hit "True Jedi" on each level.

I did play a bit of Diablo III as well, helping my pal get plans for "The Staff of Herding". Took a few tries, but we just did it on Normal mode, so there was no chance we were going to be held up by enemies ever.

This was the main game for me this week, and seems that it will be until I finish it. I actually managed far more successful runs through the castle than failed ones, at least as far as gold collecting and occasional rune collecting goes. I have yet to attempt any of the bosses, though I have completed a few miniboss rooms. I'm around Level 103 now.

I accepted Cynical's challenge and played six rounds of Skullgirls. It was only six rounds because of the six matches we played, I wasn't able to bring down any of his three characters down. Since I failed to even block reasonably well to find an opening for some meager attacks, each fight basically broke down to me being juggled at the edge of the stage, as such:

So, yeah. Next time I play this game, it's going to be in the Training mode. All of it.

Amy, Rudy and I went for some big time robbery attempts in Payday. We completed the First World Bank stage, but were unable to get through the second level, Heat Street, on Normal difficulty. I had gone through both stages on Easy without any trouble, and later Rudy and Amy did the same. The jump in opposition between the two difficulty levels is huge, and it will probably take quite a few more tries for us to get everything just right. Still, we were encouraged even in failure, and consistently got just a little bit closer to finishing Heat Street on each attempt... even though the wall we hit wasn't even halfway through the mission.

Amy said that she really enjoyed that the game has such a strong emphasis on goals rather than simply going from point A to point B, and I agree with her on that. Rudy was just glad he didn't have to worry about all that shit and could just shoot people while Amy and I tried to keep the plans together.

I played a lot of Tomb Raider over the weekend. First I did a 100% completion run on Hard, which I hadn't done before. Previously I completed everything except the challenges, and this time I did those also.

Then I started a minimal completion run on Hard to find out if I could speed-run the game. The firefights are definitely getting a lot harder with no gear upgrades and no useful skills (I do have one skill, Advanced Salvaging, only because the game forces you to choose one at the first campsite). I'm currently checkpointed just before the long firefight in the coastal bunker, and I'm running a bit low on rifle ammunition, so I'm expecting this to be a pretty difficult fight. The first wave can mostly be stealth-killed, but after that it may get hairy.

I joined Amy, Rudy, and Nikola in a crazy Halloween server that Amy had found. Later, Nick and some of his friends joined us.

The Halloween event allows for some ridiculous stuff to be a regular part of the already silly game. We had:

From gallery of vyran

Access to Halloween/full moon event customizations (the Medic dove head being one I had purchased about a month ago),

From gallery of vyran

The ghost Merasmus interfering with a King of the Hill game, giving all players random effects and occasionally dropping in to fight everyone himself, and

From gallery of vyran

Spellbooks in a Payload Race map, which didn't do anything as far as we could tell but probably would be a lot of fun if they functioned as intended.

Seth, Luke, Rudy and I went through a few of the missions before calling it a night. We all got shot frequently, and no one was really in charge - we just kind of ran around a lot and did what our characters could do until we eventually stumbled into the stairway for the next mission. It's probably definitely a lot more chaotic than the game is intended to be, but it's fun that way.

I just picked a random cooking game for Cook, Serve, Delicious, the Restaurant 'simulation' that's actually an arcade game with simulation backing to make it feel like it's not a total waste of time.

The simulation pieces are contrived and affect the arcade bit quite a bit, which is good, but the pacing is extremely slow which I was not ready for.

"You mean I have to do this 20 times before I even get a CHANCE at a one-star restaurant???"

Days feel too long for what it is.

The cooking is awesome. Your orders come in, you have to look at what the order is - some of the food is always prepared the same, others have multiple recipes that you then have to prepare... some can be given out right away, others need to be cooked after prepping.

So while fish and chicken are quick to prep and always the same, they take a while to cook, and then you have to get them off the grill at the right time or customers will complain.

Meanwhile that salad order might be complex with everything on it or easy with just ranch and cheese.

I haven't explored too deeply - I feel like the income is matched to the slow pace, so I'm not making a ton of money, but you also get a bonus for a perfect day that gives you about half your income over again and I've only done that twice in 10 or so tries.

Overall it's fun, addictive, repetitive, frenetic, crazy, and I don't know why I like it but I do.

Played this one with Cabal and I'm pretty sure he single-handedly beat back 2 AIs on Normal difficulty because I was so out of it. I had no idea what I was doing, what was going on, etc. I kept losing units left and right, not rebuilding, not retreating on time, etc. I am ridiculously bad at this game but it was so fun when I did have good moments. Suddenly we won - I have no idea why but I assume he tackled both bases himself, tired of waiting for me.

I don't really like the minimap or the tactical map, which is just an enlarged minimap. I spent the entire game trying to avoid using the 'tactical map' and focused on using the minimap and the handy clickables in the top right corner. Problem - always double-clicking units to find out where they are so I know if I should move them... then not being in a position to move them where I want anymore. Ugh. It's so ugly. I keep up in COH because I can go up to the tactical map, see the entire map clearly, and make decisions based on that - send one unit here, two there, once they get there I focus in on their area and get them doing things - but they're already where I need them to be by that time. In this game, they tend to be sitting in the base when I need them halfway (all the way) across the map.

But the game itself was FUN!

Why, oh why, do I keep coming back to this game? Somebody give me a clue.

I've been playing Civ since version 1, way back when. I've played all the base games, but only one expansion (Civilization III: Conquests). And I've always had mixed feelings about the game.

On one hand, it's great to start out by founding a single city. At that point in the game there's a whole vast world to explore, colonize, and develop--but you can only do a little at first, and that's easy and fun. Usually you have a big patch of ground all to yourself, so you're free to do as you please.

But by the end of the game, if you survive, you have a humongous conglomeration of stuff and are surrounded by well-armed enemies, and you're desperately racing to build a spaceship or the UN or something.

Between those two points, you might trade with your rivals and try to keep the peace, but you can never be sure that war won't break out. If it does, and you're not prepared, there goes your lovingly built civilization; it's just as if a mean kid came along and kicked down your sand castle.

Plus, the history is all mixed up. I'm a history buff, and it kinda goes against my grain when the Aztecs build Notre Dame or Rommel shows up as a US military leader.

Also, there are long periods of boredom when you're just clicking Next Turn and waiting for your stock exchanges to get built so they can resolve your financial worries. Until then there's not much you can do. At some points, it feels like the game is playing me.

And yet--for some reason I keep coming back. I played two or three games of Civ V over the weekend, and I'm in the middle of one now.

Moreover, I've lately been toying with the idea of buying the two expansions for Civ V. I've heard some say the game is much better with them, and I wonder if I should find out for myself. But is it worth it for an ambivalent player like me who mostly sticks to Prince level?

Last time I checked, Steam was offering a "Civ V Complete" collection for about fifty bucks. Considering the price of individual components, that'd be a good deal even though I already have the base game. But if I owned all that, would I ever have time to play any other game? Do I want that much Civ? I wonder.

I must admit I like Civ V better than any earlier version, and it's largely because of the new combat system. Even though I'm an old wargamer, it used to drive me up the wall when war would break out in earlier versions of Civ. Way too messy and tedious. But this new system, weird as it is (the tactical aspects--ranged artillery, etc.--seem completely out of place in this grand-strategic game), works for me. My heart still sinks when war breaks out unexpectedly, but I soon recover, and I often manage to turn things in my favor. Sometimes I start wars myself (something I used to always be reluctant to do).

Just last night, I was playing as Egypt, and I wanted to run the Germans off my continent. They had attacked me early on, but I threw their forces back and demanded (and got) Munich as a peace condition. Later, Hiawatha sent an emissary from another continent and asked me to join him in an attack on Germany. That fit my plans perfectly, so I agreed. We both declared war, but I conquered Germany single-handedly before any Iroquois troops arrived.

So yeah--it's an absorbing game. It kept me up late last night, as it often does. And although I may cycle through other games, I always come back around to Civ again. I still don't know why.

My 6 year old and I just discovered the joys of Creative mode: unlimited resources, no monster distractions or hiding out at night; 3 hours later, two sky-scrapers were battling for dominance of the skyline. Truly an addictive game.

I played all and only Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. I'm enjoying the game, and am getting close to the end of it. I like training, raising and evolving monsters, apparently, and that's probably my main motivation in the game. It started off much weaker than Tales of Symphonia, but it's gotten better as time's gone on.

I've been playing Wolfenstein: the New Order the last week on my PS4 (thanks Taco Bell!) and it's a blast. Plus I don't mind killing all of those Nazis because they're total dicks.

Before that I played Borderlands 2 and I still fire it up for DLC. I can't wait for the Borderlands 3.

Tomorrow I'm picking up The Last of Us, remastered for PS4.
