A whole lot of Civ. Many different map/civ/goal configurations. I've now finished the game on Prince or higher with all but two of the different civs from across the game and both DLCs. I'm planning to take a bit of a break to play something else for a bit before I do that final push to beat those two. But then I'm thinking about trying to beat the game on Deity. So far I've only finished the game up as far as Immortal difficulty. I'll probably have to play to my strengths to get that elusive Deity win. So I'll have to put some thought as to which leader to choose to do it with.

Not actually that game. But I've dusted off my HabitRPG account trying to do my chores more regularly. First thing that greeted me was the notice that I died during my absence.

So I decided to transform some of my harder dailies into habits so they don't punish me when I don't do them. It's a bit unfortunate that there's no good mechanism to track stuff you want to do once per week/month but don't really want to nail to a particular day. So those got turned into Habits or ToDo's as well.

I've been playing a lot of Shadowrun Returns this week, both at home and at work during my lunch break.

I reached the final battle and then died twice, so I loaded a save from back at the estate, before the last mission, changed my team and re-tooled, and have gone back through the last run to right before the final room and the boss battle. Now we'll see what happens!!

EDIT - Just beat the game this lunchtime! Absolutely Awesome game... really looking forward to giving Dragonfall a try.

Been playing a bit of Darksiders II (WiiU). I'm enjoying it quite a bit, especially the scenery, and the pacing is pretty good. The script is weak but at least Death is well acted, and the music is nice. Lots of useless loot to collect, and the shops have similar weak offerings. I have the difficulty set on max most of the time, but occasionally have to drop it to get certain past tough fights. In The Foundry. Using the Pro Controller.

Also played a bit of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (WiiU). Despite combat being similar to Darksiders, the controls are different, which gets confusing. Just completed the Forbidden Forest, one of my less favorite dungeons. Using the Gamepad.

Been recovering from the flu, so I've wound up wanting to ride the exercise bike for short chunks as I get better - not long enough to watch a movie. Decided to play some old Perfect Dark Zero as a time filler for that. Just playing in arena mode. I've been cycling through all the different weapon sets trying to use lots of different weapons.

I installed MoM on Azuna (Surface Pro 2) ages ago as a test. DosBox was fine on Win 8, but Dos Box mouse controls don't track with touch correctly.

I've since gotten a travel mouse, and had some free time at a friend's place last Saturday, and started it up. Finished the game on Monday, giving me two entries in the hall of fame on that system (the other was my first try on Sat that ended after about 10 turns when wandering creatures took my unprotected home city...).

I also tried out Shadow Magic on Azuna (downloaded from GoG; the other games I have on physical media), and have been poking at it all week (I'm in the tutorial levels).

The setup asked if I wanted to use DirectX, and I said 'yes'. Really boggy, with slow mouse support. So, I turned that off, and it's been fine. I suppose that means it's using OpenGL for graphic support, and the built-in Intel graphics like that better.

And I've been poking at HoI III every day on my desktop machine (Horo). Mostly a grand campaign as USA (my default for watching the world go by as I get used to the system), which is now mid-war, where I've taken out Japan, and Germany is mostly holding off the USSR at the old Polish border after an anemic Barbarossa. I'm staging units in Britain, and contemplating where to open the second front.

I'm also starting up a grand campaign as Japan; still at the stage of re-working the naval task groups, and coming to grips with a leadership and resource-deprived nation.

I need to get further on writing the review.

Kicked the ball into the goal enough to qualify for the knockout rounds for the UEFA Championship League. This is, of course, in celebration of becoming AYSO certified to referee little kid games. So I played one and soccer is still fun!

Put this on my PSP to see if it was playable enough to be a pastime during air travel. Apparently yes, although I had to use the software controller remapping to put R2 on a useful button (fortunately the game doesn't use L1/L2 for anything). Got 30-40% of the way through the game, up to the point of getting gas for the truck.

I'd forgotten how pointless some of the puzzles are, and it's been long enough that I'd forgotten some of the solutions, although they weren't hard to re-derive.

It's also been long enough since I've played the game on Normal that I'd forgotten you can buy the M4 before going to Dryfield, and how much easier it makes certain sorts of enemies.

Wow. I haven't been this excited about a game since Alpha Protocol almost three months ago.

I held off playing Dead Space for the longest time because of its reputation as last gen's shining example of "Survival Horror." The genre doesn't mean much to me.

However, if I had read somewhere that Dead Space is a loving tribute to System Shock 2 and Resident Evil 4, but also a tour de force in its own right, I'd have played it ages ago.

The level of craft on display here is amazing. This came out in 2008? This makes most of last gen look like a joke - such polish and attention to detail. Extremely slick mechanics. I play a game like this and it just hits me that so much of the industry is floundering around in some kind of arrested development.

I'm about a third of the way in (just finished Chapter 4). Level 3 suit, plasma cutter damage fully upgraded, working on the Line Gun. Also picked up the flamethrower just in case one of those swarms shows up (stasis-stomp only gets you so far). Not completely sold on the way ammo is... I dunno... faux-scarce. It's actually quite abundant, but they expect you to sell as much as possible to pay for Power Nodes. I guess that's one way of doing it.

I wish the emerging backstory were a bit stronger. The structure and pacing are tight, but the little bits of narrative that are dropped into audio and text logs aren't really at the level you'd expect from a game like this.

Well, believe it or not...

Okay, here's why. I'm 41 and not in top physical shape so it's important for me to keep active. Problem is, I'm also inherently lazy. Given no responsibilities (keeping the house clean, going to work, and so forth) I could gladly kill entire days in front of my PS4 or something. On top of that, I work a LOT of overtime, so sometimes a 6AM to 6PM shift realllllly doesn't leave me in the mood to do a while lot. I like to use a weight machine and a bike in my basement. Problem is, getting off my ass to use said machines can be a struggle.

And then I thought: "Hey, dummy. You can use your phone while you're sitting on the bike. And your phone plays games. And time just flies by when you play games." SOooo....

Reason 1 to play this: It's fun!

Reason 2: The music it comes with sucks so I can listen to my music while I play!

So I'm playing this, and I'm learning about metal now. I have several pieces of metal equipment created now and it just takes FOREVER to get it done. Lots of copper too. There's 2 pieces to most everything that needs to be made. It seems like there's always some wrench in the works there.

I've been manually changing priorities on stockpiles in order to clear out workshops. It's a bit annoying actually.

Another thing that I do LIKE about the game is that the gnomes have separate military and civilian lives, if you want that. You can make a military that just trains all the time, and I think that's recommended, but currently I have a 9 gnome national guard, basically, where each group of 3 gnomes hits a training area on different shifts. This does 2 things - one, it sets it up so there are always gnomes guarding the entrance by the training area, and two, lets gnomes sleep on their own time instead of their training time. But then the gnomes get off training and have to head to work to haul stuff, farm, mine, whatever. The Kingdom barely functions with them training in shifts so this is important. This was actually a change from my two squads of 5 move which just destroyed my economy because workshops would pile up and there'd be nobody to move them. I would go down to 2/2/2 but that would probably be too much... it takes 2 gnomes to spar so no training with only one gnome - and gnomes still take care of themselves during training time, sometimes.

This showed up on my doorstep on Friday. And it has been consuming all my free time since then. I was a little afraid how the conversion to the PS4 would work, but I am quite happily surprised. Actually ecstatic. It feels a lot more like an action RPG, but not too much to take away the dumb fun.

The graphics and sound FX are amazing. And the controls feel really fluid. There is a whole lot a polish to this game. Dealing with the shops and equipment and Town Portals...everything is smoooth. And they touch enough homage on the predecessors, while creating a new story.

Old Nick, my barbarian is having a wonderful time slaughtering evil. The figures are a little bit bigger compared to Diablo II, so I can enjoy the awesome bloodshed up close and personal. I love slamming goatboys with my hammer special move and watching their bodies and heads go flying.

Sigh.

Good fun day today. Thinking tomorrow might be more of the same.

This was the second weekend alone in a row -- my girlfriend comes back tonight -- and I decided to invest it in Dragon Age 2. I feel like I'm just on the verge of abandoning it after 5 hours of play, which is odd because I was really impressed with the game out of the gates. It gives the player a fair bit of freedom in how they want to tailor their experience. I have damage number off, but status effects will pop up, and my character will auto-attack an enemy once I attack it once.

Battles are a mixed bag. On the one hand, you can have complete control over your party by pausing and issuing commands, or you can set up tactics that will tell the computer-controlled characters how to react when certain triggers occur (like in Final Fantasy 12, though the fact that all abilities have a cool-down makes the tactics a bit more useful, whereas in FF12 you have to set up an involved gambit to have a character cast a spell sometimes, but not all the time). I have opted to just control the main character and let the other characters do their thing. I haven't spent much time with the tactics, and the longer into the game I go, the more of a time sink it will become to set up tactics for all of the characters given the myriad of skills they have.

The world is very rich, but with many games of its ilk, I don't have the patience to read the fluff for the setting. I kind of wish some of the material was narrated while you play, Bioshock-style, so that I learn more about the setting without having to put everything else on hold.

I'm not sure what is holding the game back for me. I have been on a quitting streak lately, so it might be some of that, but there is this sense that understanding the game feels just out of reach for me. I now am up to 5 allies (most of whom I really like so far!), each with different powers, but because I am not controlling them directly, I don't get a good sense of combat with different groups actually feeling any different. Even if I were issuing commands, being able to see the effects/damage/range/AoE of certain powers is difficult because of the real-time nature of the combat.

Earlier this week, I had a friend over and we played Sacred Citadel after far too much fiddling trying to get two controllers to be recognized by my computer. The game is a very simple beat-em-up that is mindless enough to justify only playing with friends. We are about half way through the game and will probably finish it up in the next sitting.

I also downloaded Hitman Go for iPad (currently on sale) after hearing good things about it on the Idle Thumbs podcast. I have gotten through the first 2 "boxes" (total about ~30 levels), but the fact that the game's levels are so deterministic and dry doesn't appeal to me. I don't think I'll continue playing.

who said I owe it to myself to try the Civ V expansions.

So, when Steam notified me that I could have the complete collection for seventeen dollars this weekend, I bit.

I'm in the midst of my first fully expanded game. Playing as the Spanish on a small map, on Prince level. It's 1914 now, and I'm well ahead. But we'll see how the endgame plays out.

Still getting used to all the new stuff, of course. I can't figure out how to tell what the dominant religion is in a given city. The Civilopedia tells me there's a banner on the city screen, but I can't find it.

Also, it's a little annoying that some of the art is apparently missing. I get a black box on my screen at times, where some piece of art should be.

Not sure how to go back and play vanilla Civ V or just G&K either. The full-blown game seems to automatically come up.

But I'm sure I'll figure these things out in time.

Right now, I'm glad the game still plays basically the same as before. There's more to it now, but I don't feel I'm back to square one on the learning curve.

Most of my time has been spent with this little gem. About 3 or 4 missions away from completing the story mode.
I've been having more fun than I thought I would with this game. The first game was alright, but this one has added a few nice little touches. I've also noticed that Harry, just as in the movies, becomes less necessary as you progress. Hermione and Ron are way more useful. You use the Patronus spell once or twice in the first group of levels, and then everyone else learns it, too. You gain the Focus spell, and only use it in that first area of the game. The Invisibility cloak is used more in cutscenes than in game (think it gets used once in game). The only thing Harry brings to the table is his ability to speak Parsletongue. Yo well.

I also played a bunch of Diablo III with my lady friend. Finished Normal mode. Now we shall see if she's interested in continuing on into Nightmare and beyond.
My Demon Hunter is up to around Paragon Level 14 now. Just sort of biding my time for my buddies to catch up a bit and then we'll use the Infernal Machines to attempt and build some Hellfire rings. Once I get one of those built I'll consider vanilla Diablo 3 "beaten".

As always. No notable characters to discuss at this point, though.

For such a simple idea, this game is a lot of fun! I know I'll be playing more of it in the future. Does anyone else find that the weapons throw off their timing more than they help?

I'm on the Mushrooms mission at the moment, though I'm putting it off to collect more skins to craft better containers. Money seems to be a little difficult for the time being. I find myself wondering if I'll be more than amply supplied, later. Then again, that could be because I keep using the assault rifle, which chews through ammo more quickly than I'd really like.

I finished the main game, then went through the two short, but very entertaining, DLCs. While not as expansive as other open world games, I enjoyed flying around as a super-powered Presidential badass just as much as the aimless wandering as a Khajiit or post-apocalyptic wasteland survivor.

Finished this in one session on Saturday, as it only takes a little over 2 hours to complete. I would still recommend it highly, as it makes the most of the little play time it has. It's easy, but the journey, and seeing the brothers work together during it, is the real draw of the game.
