1. Video Game: Dragon Age: Inquisition [Average Rating:7.94 Overall Rank:240]
Video Game: Dragon Age: Inquisition
Well, I've been playing the same three games all week. DAI, CIV:BE and COH2. I'm about 60 hours into DAI, things are getting serious. The story is actually really starting to come together nicely and I am enjoying it. Combat is still a B in my opinion, but the story and acting, visuals are all A's. SO, I can be tolerant.

CIV:BE put out a patch this week, so I tried it out for a couple hours. It makes the navies much better and balances out the Health system in the game a lot better. The tech web has colour coding now so its much easier to read, before buildings and wonders icons looked almost identical so you couldn't quick tell the different unless you clicked on them. Its coming along nicely. Still better than Civ:V was when it was first released. Hopefully they get the game up to where it should be soon, although it probably won't get there until the first expansion.

COH2 is still great. I tried out some alternate Commanders for the US forces and don't really like any of them nearly as much as my Rifle Company CO. Something instant build units when you really need them appeals to me, plus smoke cover and some light artillery support works great for me.

I spent a few hours playing the beta version of a new game called Steam Gem Madness. It was sort of fun, although a bit heavy on the microtransactions. I played multiplayer with Wytefang for a little while, but then they disabled multiplayer. Today they announced a new version coming that would wipe all progress, but apparently they're at least refunding the microtransactions.

I've been playing Rise of Nations: Extended edition on STEAM. It's awesome!

I forgot how cool this game is. It has so many nice little touches and little details. It's like a RTS take on Civilization games. Right now, I'm playing the Alexander the great campaign and having fun.

Continuing to play ESO. The plan was to be level 50 before the week is over. Am now level 45, but will not have enough time to go all the way to 50 during the weekend.

Playing the area Reaper’s March now. This is a nice area with some bigger missions and dungeons. Also like the new monsters that you meet here, like the scorpions.

Also working on getting all the lorebooks. But have like 100 left to find. Believe many are in Cyrodiil. So after finishing the main quest, I will go there and search.

Edit: Saturday evening, am now level 47. Have some main quests to do, and hope to play most of them thru until monday evening.

Edit: Am now level 48, and have made all the main quests, but not the last one (the one at level 50).

More Dragon Age: Gestapo, no, Khmer Rouge, no, KGB, no, Guantanamo, no, Inquisition. Yeah. That's the one. Seriously though, for such a great game, I really wish they could have come up with a name that was not synonymous with torture and genocide. It's a bit like when a local stadium here was originally named 'Colonial Stadium' when a bank with that unfortunate name bought the naming rights. Never mind that the stadium was intended to hold, amongst other things, cricket matches with countries that don't have very positive associations when you say 'colonial'.

It's a pretty awesome game though.

Will had a craving to play this again so we took a break from Heroes of Might & Magic III. We dusted off the PS2 (literally), messed with the settings so it didn't look so bad on our high def TV and played a few times this past week.

The story is really quirky, but fun. But the interface really shows its age. The most annoying part is the camera is stuck in inverse and I can't change it. Also the loading screens are soooo sloooow.

But otherwise, having fun. We made it to the gear city, forgot the name of it, and we're about to recruit our first ally.

Will is loving the codex side-quests. I'm terrible with puzzles like that, but of the three we've found so far, he's figured them all out.

While searching for a game guide, I found an old IGN review that compares this game to Resident Evil, with the premise that both titles are flawed. The game reviewer was flawed. Resident Evil control style (RC car style/fixed perspective) are my favorite.

Playing through this game using a guide as I've gotten stuck time and time again in this game. It's not that hard, I just don't mesh with the momentum I guess. I misunderstood a puzzle and before that didn't see an alleyway that existed that you had to go down to progress the game/story.

Now I'm no longer stuck and am keeping the links to the game guides ready. Hopefully I won't have to use it again.
Spoiler (click to reveal)

Empty tank in hand and heading for the station.

I got this on a GoG sale recently and have been trying it out in various stolen moments.

First impressions were a bit poor, as GoG offers three wallpapers, and two of them were heavy on the cheesecake. (I wish they'd offered the title screen image as a wallpaper.)

The game itself, however, has been good. Like HoMM V, this is a Russian-developed game based on an old New World Computing/3DO property (different studio). However, HoMM V tends to feel a bit crude and uninspired, while this one feels polished.

It's all 3D, and the models look very good, and well textured. The camera is a bit more limited than I'd like, but I don't feel like I'm having the same troubles to see things.

The combat is turn-based on a hex grid, with your troops moving around and attacking or using abilities, and the hero can cast a spell one a turn. It feels much closer to traditional HoMM combat than HoMM V does.

Outside of combat, it also feels close to what little I remember of the original King's Bounty. You are a single hero leading a band of followers around the map doing quests. The quest dialogs are fairly snappily written, and I've yet to have a quest fail to tell me what I should be doing clearly.

So, I'm currently about done with the first map area, and have been enjoying it. GoG keeps putting King's Bounty: Crossworlds on sale for $3, and I'm contemplating getting it. (I'm not touching King's Bounty: Warriors of the North until I hear reports of reduced buggyness.)

Played through the Steampunk Scenario and am starting the Fall of Rome Scenario next. As I get used to the screens and shortcuts and AI strategy, it's becoming more fun.

Also played some of Real Boxing, mostly for the cards, but it was fun and visually good while it lasted.

Next tried out the abstract shooter Pulstar but it was a little disappointing.

The other game, Dungeon of Elements, is a cross between an RPG spell brewing game and Tetris. And yet it is quite entertaining in a mindless Tetris way.

I dug out my save file for Might and Magic II: Gates to Another World and have wandered around enough to take stock of where I was (the Trello board with my to-do list was also still around, another plus). My party is still level 6-7 (I have too many characters; the B-team is mostly level 4), and while this is enough to give some of the early areas a solid go, there are still numerous types of enemies that give me trouble of one form or another.

This game has also taken a shine to large stacks of enemies, as compared to the first one. In M&M 1 you could find encounters with a dozen enemies (maybe as many as 16), but that was on the high side. It's not hard in certain areas here to get ambushed by enemy parties of 50 goblins, and not uncommon for them to call in another 40 or 50 on top of that. One quest that I've set aside for now involves a boss orc and his backup stack of 80 other orcs.

Not that I expect a progress report to mean much to anybody, but I've just about finished exploring the surface level of Sandsobar (the easiest second town to get to), and this allowed my sorceror to pick up most of the nuke spells that she didn't learn naturally. Next up is probably Tundara, and then I should get back to the caverns under the first two towns. It would be nice if any of the castles would give me the time of day (although it occurs to me that I actually haven't been back around to any of them in a few levels)....

Payday 2 - I'm still enjoying playing the Xmas heist on Overkill difficulty with Andy. Our skills complement each other pretty well, and we have roles down. Each mission takes about 10 minutes, so we blow through them pretty quick collecting a lot of money and XP.

Hero Siege - Seth gifted this to me. It's a fun defeat-the-enemy-waves style of game complete with fun skills to choose from.

Sonic All Stars Racing - Played with Matt, Kevin, Kevin (2), and Kevin (3). We did a little racing and then some battle modes. Good times.

Risk of Rain - Played with Luis and SuperChutney. We got all the way to the last stage before we died. Not bad for a bunch of clowns running around.

Sanctum 2 - Played with Luis and Andy. Colon Dee! We completed one of the maps. Luis left shortly after that to work on the song.

Sadly, after the awesomeness of last week, no Neverwinter this week.

APEX is currently at about 275 gold. Smudge finally got the second one right as the bonus period ended and has another month now. We're currently rearranging land ownership, since the more you own, the more taxes you pay on all of it. The current project is a two-story medium house. Which wants a lot of stone. Smudge is about a third through that part, and the mining is eating her labor. After that, is iron, which we've got covered.

Questing-wise, we went back and did the quest with the high-level elite wind elementals. This took a few deaths as they come in threes, and hit real hard. Well, Gau died a few times, since I'm not the tank, I managed to avoid dying. The follow up was against a single more powerful elemental.

Well, in theory. She went down fast and didn't give us any trouble.

We've also gotten though almost all the questing in the first PvP zone. All that's left are the quests just outside the dungeon in there. We'll probably take a second crack at that soon too.

Towards the end of my vacation, we got a second farm cart (mine/Eseria's), and have done a number of two-person, six-pack trade runs since. Just recently, we built a third for Smudge's main alt, Lingli.

Speaking of Lingli....

One of her guildies found a bunch of trade packs sitting by the edge of the road. No one around, no sign of what was going on. Just... free loot sitting there. He looked around for a few minutes, and mentioned it on guild chat. No one showed up to claim them, so he picked one up and delivered it.

An hour later, Valkaryie started raging in faction chat that someone had taken one of her packs. The guild leader explained what happened, including waiting around, and said 'you snoose, you loose.'

Valkaryie went off the deep end and declared she'd kill on sight an member of the Night Owls. She's made a right pest of herself, and is the first person to be on Night Owls' kill on sight list. In fact, saying that Valkaryie is giving you trouble on faction chat, is a good way to get a fair number of people running to help. Popular person!

Anyway, she knows where the guild house is, and is only picking on easy targets, and avoiding anyone who actually knows how to fight. Lingli, as a healing non-PvP type has been killed three times by her. The guild has returned the favor 6 or 7 times.

Man, there's just no end to this game! I was playing the same game last week--as Rjak. When I posted a progress report last week, Tlaloc and I had defeated the two other wizards, and now it was one-on-one.

Well, it still is.

I'm well ahead now, and I even managed to banish Tlaloc once. But he came back, and his capital is now far away again. He's harassing me every turn with wandering packs of units, and I take such heavy losses when attacking his cities that I spend quite a few turns recovering.

At least I've captured all his cities on the Myrran plane, so he has no presence there anymore. With Myrran units at his disposal, he'd be even tougher.

The most annoying thing is that he regularly attacks my cities with bands of slingers and shamans. Naturally I cast Wall of Darkeness (which prevents enemy missile attacks). But I don't want to leave the city and get shot up, so I have to click Done about a thousand times before we hit the turn limit. Clicking Auto only works sometimes; other times the AI sends my units out into no-man's land.

I'm quitting for now and taking a lunch break. I wanted to just win the game this morning, get it over with, and play something else. But it has turned into an epic struggle, much to my dismay.

Bit of a mish-mash this weekend...I finished my last exam Friday afternoon so have devolve back into a child-like state as is often the case when I finish a semester of school.

Last night I played Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet and am about 2/3rds done the game; it's a very short game. This is my second time through the game. I'm a little shocked that the game didn't seem to get its moment in the spotlight when it was released; the art design is unique and striking, the game mechanics are really well done with many different tools that can be used in both combat and navigation, and a completely non-existent UI (outside of the occasional "new map objective" or "piece 2/3 of next weapon upgrade") coupled with fantastically clever organic* tutorials that accompany new tools and situations. I highly recommend the game for anyone who is a fan of the "lonely explorer on a hostile planet" feeling of the Metroid games, with the caveat that you will probably not get more than about 4 hours from it.

I also have played a lot of Dragon Age 2 and hope to finish Act 2 sometime before the end of the month. I described a series of events to my girlfriend which left her kind of horrified at me:

Spoiler (click to reveal)
I have been romancing Merill for some time, and she was waiting at my home one day, which eventually turned into a, *ahem*, "romance" scene. We, *ahem*, "romanced" each other, at which point she started getting really clingy and I basically told her to buzz off, after which she left in abject embarrassment (my desire to consistently role-play a character will pretty well always lose out to my curiosity when I'm faced with good-guy/bad-guy decisions that need to be made in awkward circumstances like this).

A short while later, I added her to my party to venture into someone's mind, where she was tempted by a demon to turn on me for the power to save her people. I reacted by telling her that if she turned on me, SHE WAS A DEAD WOMAN. Then she turned on me and actually wiped out my entire party (fighting with the demon), resulting in a game over screen. I thought it was appropriate. When I reloaded it turns out that she turns on you no matter what, but it just pops her out of the dream world.

We had some friends over the other night and wound up discussing the Sega Genesis, so I naturally booted up my Genesis emulator and most of the rest of the night was revisiting the system and, for the most part, picking games at random from the complete list and trying them out. Among the games were
Barbie Vacation Adventure
Star Trek Deep Space Nine
Dinos for Hire
Doom Troopers
X-Men
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker
Nightmare Circus
Clay FIghters
Mortal Kombat
DJ Boy
Road Runner
Jurassic Park
Sonic 3 (including the competitive mode)

Yesterday I played some Sonic & All-stars Racing Transformed with Rudy, Matt, and my girlfriend after fiddling with controller settings for a while. It's a pretty good game as far as kart racing games go. There is a fair bit of room for skillful play.

I also played Payday (the first one) with Rudy and Matt. We breezed through the first heist pretty easily, though the whole while I didn't really know what was going on. I said I felt like someone's kid brother that tagged along because their mom made him take me. The second heist went poorly and we eventually failed.

I like Payday from a game design perspective, and have heard from a lot of people that really enjoy it, but I rarely have a good time when I'm playing. Between waiting for police assaults to end (only for the next to start in less than a minute), waiting for teammates to get out of custody, and waiting to get out of custody yourself, there is a lot of WAITING in the game. Add to that the fact that I always seem to be low (or out) of ammo, and the fact that the game throws so many guys at you that you MUST reload while under fire, and there are rarely moments when I don't feel frustrated and completely useless.

And I suppose I can't fault the game for that. Some games are great at making the player feel empowered while others are great at making the player feel disempowered which forces them to learn the finer points of the game and co-operative play to overcome the challenge. I guess I'm just not as interested in the latter type than the prior.

*Is there a better term than "organic" here? I wanted to use the ten-dollar term "diegetic", but I think that is only used to describe audio that comes from the game world.

Played through chapters one and two and then had to stop myself before I devoured the whole thing in one go. Must wait until the last chapter is released and debugged before diving in again...

Anyway, this is awesome! It's like a cross between Myst and Monkey Island, but done entirely in stop motion clay animation. Game of the year for me. If you are looking for something to get in the xmas sales, this is the thing to get.

Jebus, does this game eat time or what? Oh, I should really try for Hoarder on this dungeon! Hey, there's an item I can unlock with one more run! Oooh, I'll bet I've got the tools to beat that class challenge now! Nah, no way this little puzzle is going to take me an hour to solve like the last one! Everywhere you look, there's a seemingly endless stream of intriguing, 30-minute tasks to complete.

Of course, the fixed quest/challenge content must end eventually, but after a couple weeks of heavy play I still feel like there's tons to do. I still have one class (Crusader) left to unlock, and haven't unlocked any of the "monster races" yet (though I may be misunderstanding these, but I don't want to look everything up). I've only unlocked 5 gods and know there are more. I've solved maybe half the puzzles (and only looked up the answer to one, which depended on a mechanical detail of Burning I wasn't aware of). I've completed most of the Bronze challenges, a few of the Silvers, and none of the Golds.

The precision of the design and the sheer quantity of content vastly exceed what I expect from an $8 Steam game. I heartily recommend this to fans of puzzlers like SpaceChem or Deadly Rooms of Death. FTL fans would likely enjoy this too - much like FTL, there's a lot of depth to it that's not obvious at first.

In other gaming, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U battles have continued. My 7yo son's been practicing and is getting decent enough to beat me fair and square once in a while. While Jigglypuff is still my mainstay, I'm trying to branch out and learn Bowser for a change of pace. Seems clumsy so far, but I'm sure it will improve with practice.

In anticipation of time off for the holidays, I also fired up the HD remake of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. I've only played a few hours, but I'm impressed so far. I don't love Zelda games the way many people do and have only played the NES original and sequel and most of Ocarina on the N64. It's probably heresy to say this, but I actually like Wind Waker better than Ocarina so far, just because the world and characters seem so much more lively. Ocarina was so perfect in design, but the setting was hopelessly bland to me. Anyway, I doubt I'll have much time for Wind Waker in the next week, but look forward to digging into it after that.

goo Finished the campaign in Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm. Great time long overdue.
Finished the campaign for the second time in Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army 2, this time on Elite (max) Difficulty.
More skirmishing in Company of Heroes 2, this time as Americans, in the hope of unlocking more stuff for them.
Lots of sailing in Sid Meier's Pirates, largely because I kept neglecting to save at crucial moments. Oops.
Needed to get my gun on after finishing SE: NZA 2 so I opened up Half-Life 2 Episode 2 for the first time. What's with all the maggots?
Feeling too spent after all that posting to the Beaten list, so instead of my usual photo gallery you can come along on my journey through Zombie infested Berlin. WARNING: These gameplay videos are gruesome and graphic, so if you're squeamish, STAY AWAY! Otherwise, enjoy. goo

Have been playing a bit further in Batman Arkham City this weekend. Not much further but I still needed to get out with the blood of Raz Al Ghul and bring it to Freeze. Got there and I'm now involved in a boss fight with Freeze.

Out of loyalty to the saga, I am playing this game. I think there is a lot of potential here, but they need to pulish it a lot. Plus, I'm missing the factions from Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, their personalities where stronger, so to say.

Still, loads of fun.

This past week I've been playing a lot of Payday 2 with Rudy.. focusing on the lucrative Xmas Heist, which has us rescuing a pilot who happens to be our fixer's brother, and then recovering as much coke as possible from the falling Christmas presents.

The last 22+ successful missions have been on Overkill difficulty, which we're finding manageable, but pretty tough... Though I wish I understood the algorithm that sends 4+ Bulldozers and dozens of Shields at us one mission and then almost no 'dozers another time!

Our character builds compliment each other pretty well, with my Mastermind being the Medic and Hostage taker, and Rudy's (mainly) Enforcer being more of a damage dealer... we've also got the start of the mission down to something of an art, with my guy getting the pilot up and searching the crash site, while Rudy checks the train yard and leads the way up to the lumber yard and gets us a hostage. Between us we then get as much coke from the surrounding areas as we can and then hope for the chopper to come to the lumber yard for the second pickup (after he's rescued the pilot). We now tend to get more bags of coke to the yard (hoping for that big pay day!) because we're happy to throw them around and leave them on the ground a bit while we shuttle them.. instead of running every single bag in.

At this difficulty level we don't tend to stay after the chopper has been to pick up our coke the first time.. since the game starts sending a lot more special enemies after about the 10 minute mark and we'd rather get a reduced pay day and start again, than getting nothing!

I also managed a couple of sessions of Sanctum 2 this weekend. The first was with Luis and Rudy (putting the band back together!)... I picked a 'random' map from one of the earlier zones to ease us back into the game and we completed it without too much trouble despite our usual level of pranking.

On Sunday night Rudy and I played Sanctum 2 with Amy and Adam who had never played before. I let Rudy win the jumps statistic because he seems at his happiest when he does! He also earnt the most deaths.

I like Sanctum.. it was one of the first FPS/TD games I got into (back when Sanctum 1 was in beta), and I think Luis and I are responsible for everyone else picking up the game. The text to voice and the fun end of level statistics are definitely a big plus for the game, which otherwise might not stand out from the crowd.

Colon Dee!

Up to about 500 hero souls now. This game has gotten into a real "grindy" rut for me. Not sure how much longer I will keep at it. The amount of time spent is kinda high for the amount of hero souls I am getting relative to the cost of doing things with them.

I also fired up a couple of Master of Magic games, but did not get far in any of them. First was an "all blue" high men, for the superpowered paladins & flying invisible warships. Second was dark elves and life magic for... why... I'm not sure...
I like the way the lairs/nodes/etc scale with difficulty, but I don't like the way the AI is handled. Even on easy, they summon hordes of magical creatures. On harder levels the computer players are given extra starting retorts, and wandering monsters focus on you and ignore computer cities. I like the game alot but I dislike the inherent inequality there.
I am curious to try one of the "spiritual successors" but really, I think I want to play Master of Magic with the ability to mod how difficulty/AI works.

I finished The Last of Us yesterday. It's an amazing game overall, though I hesitate to rate it a 10 because the story seems to be over several times before it actually is.
