Have you played Dungeon Petz? If so, what did you think? If not, any interest? Why or why not?

Vlaada makes a wide range/type of game.

1) What Vlaada games, if any, have you played and like?

2) What do you think are some of his themes/marks in a game that make it distinctly his? In other words, how can you tell, if at all, that a game is a Vlaada design?

A lighter Vlaada game coming from Stonghold soon. I can't decide what to think about it. What are your thoughts?

I think this is a nice idea, but I'm not a fan of the art. It seems like putting animals on the money limit its appeal. What do you think?

Follow-up: What do you think of having separate money cards? What are you feelings on paper money? Do you like poker chips? Do you prefer to have fancier money, such as the kind that came with Hegemonic (see entry image)?

This is your opportunity to gush over how adorable your pets are. Post pictures, tell stories, etc.

Do you have any pets? Did you have pets growing up? What animals/pets do you like/dislike? In general, how do you feel about pets?

A few updates:

- I've edited the header. I added a link to the Mafia wiki page, added the third item regarding top fives, and cleaned up some of the language. Please use this header hereafter.

- For those who do not know, James is our official archivist, updating all those wiki links for each of our geeklists.

- A minor (and somewhat pointless) request: Please include RPGG and VGG when you create the geeklist. This way people can add whichever type of item they want.

---

Unrelated: this week's list started out with a theme about pets/animals, but then turned into a Vlaada-fest. So, if it feels a bit disjointed, that's because it is.

The Mushroom Eaters
At this point if you called me a Nate Hayden fan-boy I'd have a hard time putting up an argument. In my opinion, he's designing the most interesting games in the hobby and it feels like his work always comes from a place that's so foreign and counter-culture that you have to take notice.

If you haven't heard of this game Nate released it in Essen 2013 bringing only 25 copies due to the fact that he had to hand-make the really bizarre fold-out board, which was a painstaking process. The game quickly built up a cult following due to the subject matter, good word of mouth, and Nate's excellent release of Cave Evil which followed shortly after. He took pre-orders for a new print run where he outsourced the board to a factory (he prints entirely in the U.S.) and received over 500 pre-orders.

The game itself is just odd as hell. The great shaman is approaching her zenith and a new shaman must be found. The players find themselves sitting in a tent, incense and fire billowing smoke towards the opening in the roof. Everyone drinks from the bowl and shaman proclaims that the plants now speak to us.

You collectively follow the shaman on a psychedelic journey of enlightenment, horror, and beauty. It plays just slightly like Reiner Knizia's Lord of the Rings game where players collectively move a pawn that affects everyone. It's pretty simple but there's several sub-procedures and crazy wrinkles. The game includes stuff like a nervous system tracker, personal journeys where you leave the group to experience your own private trip, and a talking mini game which represents your confusion and difficulty in forming and understanding spoken word while the psychadelics have taken hold.

Oh - and you wear 3d glasses while playing. The board has subtle 3d effects and a few cards do as well. It's just balls out nuts. Primarily an experience game, this thing transcends the hobby and should be looked at as art.

My first game was with the local meetup group at an FLGS and the people kept stopping by asking "WTF is that?" I love games that draw a crowd like Queen's Gambit and Cave Evil.

There's a full review coming after I get in another play or two this week. I don't think I need several more to talk about this one in depth.

Lancaster
I got suckered into this while waiting for a friend to show up for Mushroom Eaters and I surprisingly enjoyed it. It's worker placement but it had a couple small touches of theme that I enjoyed such as the wars in France. I ended up winning in a 4 player game by over 20 points so that may have helped (tip - go for more workers/knights in the beginning).

On My Mind
Mushroom Eaters has occupied my thoughts most of the week. I've done a bit of painting of Imperial Assault (finished three Royal Guards, the three probe droids, and the Wookie thus far) in preparation for our first game. I'm also finally making time to get back to design work and did some more playtesting.

Finished Peaky Blinders season 1, what a great show. Cillian Murphy is phenomenal. It has a nice English Boardwalk Empire vibe going for it. I was slightly let down with the climax in the Season 1 finale but otherwise the writing has been top notch.

I can't believe Insterstellar was snubbed by the Academy in the Cinematography category. Certainly deserved a nomination.

DnD 5e: ongoing

Risk: Legacy
Played with Tim and John as Mike has said he has little interest in continuing the campaign. We're probably going to have John's wife join us for the last 6 games as its definitely more fun with 4. I had a really nice comeback in this game, as early on I was hit with a crippling blow by a random event and honestly thought that the best I could do was help prop Tim up for his first win. Likely because I looked so weak, they basically ignored me. John is very vengeful in games like this, and made a poor tactical decision in the name of striking back at Tim and it left them both open to me swooping in and claiming victory with one of the alternate conditions. I've now got 5 wins of 9, and if they don't start actively teaming up on me it's going to get rough.

Pompeii
Tim and John's first time playing this one and they grasped it quickly as its nice and simple. Tim has hilariously poor luck with dice and if I believed in the idea that a person can simply be cursed for all time it'd be this one. He did much better than usual in this game, and lost in a tiebreaker by 1 point. Lots of fun.

Star Wars
We did two campaign missions, though there were only 2 of us playing. The drop-in/drop-out is working well, but it's also causing some weird quirks. At the end of a mission, the players will get 100 credits per player to buy equipment. This means that some days we'll get lots of credits and be able to buy a really good weapon, but if one of the 2p gamers gets it then you've consolidated more $$ into a single player that now gets to activate twice among other bonuses. My character is working really well right now, and due to some of the 2p changes I was able to use my interrupt on multiple occasions to completely eliminate an enemy squadron before they could move, wasting the Imperial player's turn. This is, understandably, very frustrating. The first campaign was very close, but the 2nd mission our Imperial player was so disheartened/frustrated that he missed a very important rule and conceded the mission about halfway through. The rule miss was so significant that we're actually going to replay that mission next time. I'm loving the game, but he may sell his copy when we're done with the campaign.

DnD
Also, the GCL DnD play-by-forum has started moving along now. I'm shaking off some of my old DM dust but it's fun so far

On my Mind
Not much. We're trying to watch all the Oscar nominees so this weekend we saw Whiplash and Birdman. I liked them both, and JK Simmons in Whiplash is amazing. He puts on an acting clinic and wouldn't be surprised to see him take the Oscar. Birdman was good, though Katie found it a little too artsy for her tastes. I think it will be that or Selma for best picture (which I haven't seen yet, but it's getting some buzz).

Yardmaster Express 1 NEW!

Yardmaster Express was pretty bad. As I've recently mentioned, I enjoy Yardmaster as a trumped up version of Uno. This microgame-ish version of it has a pretty dull draft with uninteresting scoring and little control over what you grab. Glad I didn't back it.

Pay Dirt was with four. Although more players made the auctions better, the game still is rather bland. It's not bad, but it's not really good either. I was hoping for something more considering my enjoyment of Alien Frontiers, and I really only backed it because of Tory Niemann; unfortunately, there's not much there. Also, the rulebook leaves out some details. It doesn't make the game impossible to play, just simply annoying when encountering those vague situations. Moreover, it doesn't seem any answers from Tory or Patrick at Crash Games are getting posted on the forums. So, to the trade/sell pile!

And obviously, I continue to enjoy Dungeon Petz.

Let's start with Orleans since it's getting a little buzz right now thanks to the upcoming USA & Australian release from TMG. It's a very fun game. It's a nice mixture of worker placement and the bag-building mechanic that was in vogue last year along with some engine building and a touch of Feldian point salad. (The worker placement is a little more lenient than usual since you only place on your own board.)

The game is the most interesting at the beginning as everything really good is in short supply, and you spend a few turns trying to acquire useful workers (and buildings and such), and those form the basis of your point-earning actions for the middle & end-game. You can get extra workers in the mid/late game too but several types are going to go quickly because they offer big bonuses.

I don't know if I'd say the game does anything highly unique other than maybe being the first bag-builder to have a strong engine-building aspect, but the whole thing flows nicely and feels pretty good to play.

A not-so-great manual brings it down a bit (hopefully will be fixed in the upcoming release?) and we did mis-play some things, but the game was still every enjoyable. Every single player said they really want to try it again, so that's a big vote of confidence for it. Likely a keeper for me.

Temporum was decent. It's a card-playing game where the board is largely auxiliary and the theme is almost totally non-existent, but the card-playing was enjoyable enough for it to be fun. It supports up to 5 but I would recommend playing with just 2 or 3, as additional players don't really add much to the game.

It's got a tiny bit of tableau building, as you can get some continuous effect cards, but the majority of the game is just spent getting cards and trying to find the most efficient way to turn them into money and points.

I don't think it will wow anyone but I didn't think it was as bad as I have heard some people claim either. I did buy it during BGG.CON shopping fever and I think I'll get a few plays out of it, but I don't think it's a permanent addition to my collection.

MaskMen continues to be a blast. I love it. The people I taught it to this week (all new players) also seemed to enjoy it a lot.

Ticket to Ride 1910 was good and I think I see why people say it's better than base TtR. I'm now interested in trying the expansion for the Europe map too, but I'm pretty sure the narrow and precarious TtR maps like Nordic and Switzerland will remain my favorites.

On De Vulgari Eloquentia :
I've replayed this attractive and special game to me, four and a half years after my last game.

It was a 4 players game and, as always, it left to us a lasting memory. As usual, the debriefing has lasted half an hour, each player giving strategic interrogations, "what if" and personal impressions. For all of us, it was a blast.

I planned to start from Taranto (southern of Italy) to make my way though Italy towards the north in order to play for big knowledge (sending my messenger earky on to the Bologna university and join him in this city before round 7 in order to boost my knowledge with cities and tile events along the journey).

But the initial turn order has prevented me to do so and i have decided to start from north in Torino. So I had to change my strategy because it is a poor region regarding knowledge. I decided to stay in this area to study blue and orange level 1 manuscripts and kill the track of the Riddle of Verona (i managed to reach the end of the track before leaving this blue region).

Very ignorant a long time since i have focused myself on political support, copyists and small manuscripts, i then walked my way down Italy to the south in order to study manuscripts written in all dialects.

During my trip, i have amassed money and knowledge but i was still the least erudite (i have reached level 2 of knowledge opportunistically to take the manuscripts of colors i was missing).

At this point in the game, only one player (the most erudite) has converted itself to embrace a religious career (all players start as a merchant). My plan was to do the same and become Pope since i managed to grap the necessary votes for the final election. Consequently, i became Friar Stefano because his power allows him to become Cardinal, prerequisite to hope to become Pope.

Soon, everyone has converted himself which surprised me because a player had reached the end of the East track and another was with 120 in his pocket.

The most erudite player reached the level 8 of knowledge and we let him do the job to bring the Holy Grail in play. He managed to grap it though.

Turn 12 (there is 16 turns max), the pope became sick. I was nominated Cardinal Zazza in Brindisi and i started to tell myself that i was very well placed for victory : 18 votes, 5 copyists, Riddle of Verona, well positioned for the richest thanks to Zazza ability, priests in reserve for the Canticles of the Sun track.

The Pope had suffered a long agony because we play 16 turns, which allowed everyone to maximize their knowledge by taking manuscripts but above all, allowed everyone to become Cardinal. I have succeeded to steal the second spot on the Canticles of the Sun (like i was planning to) for 4 points at the final scoring.

In the end, i wasn’t elected Pope: in fact, the Cardinal Inquisitor Shlasinger also had the necessary votes but a higher level of knowledge. Therefore i was appointed Chamberlain. To my surprise, the other 2 cardinals didn’t have enough supports to claim the title of Chamberlain (7 and 5 votes).

Final score: 55-55-48-39.

Again, i was screwed for the final victory by the Pope because he was more scholar than me (this is the tie breaker). arrrh

Such a wondeful game. Anyone want to play it again and now, 3 of us own his own box.

On Android:Netrunner :
I am working around Leela Patel since i think that she is great against the FA decks of my buddy. Our last matches have prove that i was right because the Leela’s ability is really awesome.

I enjoy the way she can punish the corp for having scored an agenda : create a weakness in the server(s) you are ready for and focused on in order to hammer and make big turns.

Obviously, i am focused on R&D (3x R&D Interface) and i play Doppelganger. I have a lot of events because Criminal events are so great :
1) Feint and Legwork for Emergency Shutdown
2) Three Steps Ahead to recover myself after a big turn of runs

My draw engine is made of Hostage, Mr Li and Window.

Since i have a lot of resources and hardware and i generally don’t go for facecheck, The Supplier is the obvious choice : it is a very good card.

I may build a variant with Snith and Box-E in order to be more aggressive early on.

On Dominion :
It is not my cup of tea (maybe because of the base game) but since it is one of my wife's favourite game, it is better to play than not. I am eager to try Seaside though because i have read good feedbacks (mostly the 2 turns effect cards) and my box is still in shrink.

On 6 Nimmt & Shadow Hunters :
Yesterday, i went to a gaming event hosted by my LGC. I found myself refusing to play Imperial and Nations, passed away of tables where Asgard, Capitals and Panamax were laid out to finish by playing and enjoying Shadow Hunters and 6 nimmt! (We were 9 laughting around the table !!!!!).

A pretty quiet week, games wise, but a packed house at last for the weekly meet-up meant:

Good Cop Bad Cop x 4 (Agent 4 times - wtf?)

One Night Ultimate Werewolf x 3

Hanabi (20 pts bah!)

I like GCBC a lot. Packs a ton of play into a tiny box. Being able to look at other player's cards AND being obliged to reveal your own cards to take certain actions is a really interesting combo. Reminds me of Resistance plus ONUW plus Blood Bound all with a nasty sense of humour brought to bear via the Equipment cards. Recommended. Will get a good bit of play I am sure.

ONUW was a disaster for me. Outed immediately as Wolf in game 1, spotted Wolf in game 2 as Robber but was not believed, and as a Robber again in game 3 I ended up being lynched despite ID-ing both Wolf and minion correctly, again. Sometimes the buggers are just after my blood.

Hanabi always a pleasure.

On my mind:

The Grand Budapest Hotel is now one of my favourite movies. And for wholly different reasons I'm a John Wick fan too. Why on earth can't Keanu Reeves find a few other decent vehicles?

My Warfighter: The Tactical Special Forces Card Game expansions have arrived, but I need to find time to look at them properly. I've already pre-ordered a bunch of extra stuff for them.

I really, really fancy Tajemnicze Domostwo but am not prepared to re-mortgage the house for a copy. It'll come down in price, I'm sure.

Charlie has got me all excited with his review of Witness too - looks terrific and I doubt I will be able to resist it for long (and unlike Mysterium it's in stock in the UK).

And to my great delight it looks like I've roped about 6 of my weekly game group into attending the UK Games Expo in May, which is the nearest thing we've got to Gencon, so can't wait for that. I've already got an invite from another UK BGG-er to meet up for "game/pint" which sounds about spot on.

*new to me

*Scoville
I got Scoville to the table at game night. Unfortunately, everybody wanted to play it, so it was our first game and we had 6 people. I definitely didn't plan at all during the game (and yet, I won, hooray!) since I was focused on making sure the rules and game flowed well. Unfortunately, us all being new, many of us didn't plan well. It was impossible to get purple or red peppers from the fields until the last round of the game! So in addition to being dragged out due to having 6 players instead of 3-4, it was also dragged out because we didn't have the peppers to satisfy markets and recipes. So a 60-90 minute game took us 2.5 hours to finish. Everybody was happy for it to be over. I look forward to playing this game again with 3-4 players, as the game was originally intended, but I'm afraid that many people may have been soured on what's definitely an outlier and overall bad experience.

*The Battle of Five Armies
This was awesome. Unfortunately I hadn't complete read the rules beforehand, so some learning as we went and discovering certain special rules during gameplay, but it was a good and fun experience. I definitely like the WotR feel in the much shorter amount of time. Although it definitely plays very different, I am very happy to have both games in my collection.

Firefly: The Game w/many expansions
Simply awesome. I flew the Artful Dodger and most of the time played very well IMO. Unfortunately, there was awful luck in the last rounds between me and another contender and we were both constantly delayed another couple of turns with her completing the final goal before me. The other two players hadn't completed the first (of three) goals, yet, but after finishing the first goal, the second two come quickly. Assuming you have a halfway decent crew.

*Hacienda
This was new to me, and people compared it to Kingdom Builder. I liked this better, and my cousin planned way better than all of us, building immense lakes at the end that he left convenient holes for. Had I not been first and/or had another turn or played differently, I could've scored an additional 17 points in the first scoring round, which is more than what I lost by. But I didn't, I ended up getting third. It was still lots of fun and I would like to play it again.

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords – Base Set
In Pathfinder, we continued our adventure with the first adventure of the first adventure pack, though it was very easy and we did very well. I really like the added deck cards too because the basic game cards make me feel like I don't care what I have at all.

New Game

Dead of Winter: A Crossroads Game x1

Old Games

Quoridor x1
Smash Up x1

Workpocalypse continues unabated, so only one day of games for me with one new game played.

I was mildly interested in Dead of Winter: A Crossroads Game when I heard it had a crisis system a la Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game, which I think it one of the most perfect purely mechanical systems of deceit out there. The Crossroads system itself is also an interesting (if mildly clunky) way of injecting story elements in a novel way. At the end, though, I felt the same way about it as I do other survival-horror type games (such as City of Horror): While I think that the grindy nature of making tough decisions with scarce resources is a credit to the theme of these games, it's really not why I play board games. I tend to also not be a fan of the Zombie Survival genre in general unless it's ridiculously pulpy (Zombicide) or frantic/heroic (Zombie 15')

In other news, on the STILL hopeful list of un-played games (spurred on by the discussion at the bottom of the list)...

- Temporum
- Kobayakawa
- Letnisko
- Maya
- Chosŏn
- Arkwright

Marion and I visited college friends Mike and John in NYC this weekend. Mike had specifically requested I bring Galaxy Trucker along, and had indicated interest in Agricola as well. When I arrived, he admitted that he decided against purchasing Agricola, as it seemed a bit too complicated, so we played a lot of Galaxy Trucker. Three games, plus he purchased the GT app and has been hooked on that ever since.

Galaxy Trucker -- Just the base game. I introduced the game to him, and we played through a fast game that illustrated the different difficulties between rounds, and cards. I absolutely thrashed both of them (I do not think they broke 30 credits), but they both absolutely loved it, and immediately requested to play again.

Both Mike and John did much better on their second match. They managed to put more guns to protect against meteors and pirates, but were still criminally underdefended. This was not too but an issue because I took the lead, so dealt with pirates/smugglers before they had to. So, on the last leg I did not take the 1st place token, letting the two of them lead instead. This led to both of them losing their ships, and requesting we play that flight over again. They put more guns on that time through, and managed to have at least some ship to dock at our final destination. Both absolutely loved the game.

Tsuro 3x -- Mike managed to win all three of these games. I'm still not sure how that's possible; although there is some strategy to the game, I would have expected nobody to win all three.

Zombie Dice 3x -- First time playing for me. Amusing filler.

Galaxy Trucker -- One last game of Galaxy Trucker, after both Mike and John had practiced using the app and building ships. These had significantly fewer open connections, and looked genuinely flyable. This match had almost no slavers or pirates in it at all. In fact, the third leg had none. Instead, they got pummeled repeatedly by meteor swarms (5 of them). This was mostly fine, except neither had bothered to mount any sideways mounted guns, and we were playing the IIIA Not-Enterprise ship, which quickly broke apart for them.

Hanabi 2x -- Our first match was rough, there were a number of misplays and confusion as to why someone would hint a particular way or another. This resulted in us losing that match entirely. The second match was the complete opposite. Between a beautiful setup, and people using their hints and cards wisely, we actually managed my very first 25 point game.

----------

In summary, tons of Galaxy Trucker. The base game is far too easy for me at this point. I am genuinely bored of both the ships and base components for it. Unfortunately, adding the rough roads cards, or other challenges, does not make for a nice 1st experience with the game.

I am likewise completely bored of Hanabi. Now that I've managed a 25 score, I have no desire to play the game again. For me, that game has run its course.

Looks like they've gobbled up Ystari and Pearl games as well. I'm not familiar with either of them but Asmodee is certainly picking up a number of companies.

Top 5 Games that only work with a specific person/group
1. Sheriff of Nottingham
2. Sons of Anarchy
3. Cockroach Poker
4. Skull & Roses
5. Bohnanza

All of these games rely on players bluffing and/or negotiating. If players don't get into, then these games will just fall totally flat.

Honorary mention: Most train games seem to rely on players that have train game experience. Similar to those above, if players aren't keeping others in check during auctions/buying company shares, then the game will either fall apart or someone will run away with it. I'd also say Container fits with this too.

5 Games Grace Recommends for Child Development
So, pretty much any/all games are great for children's development. My board game buying habits are likely going to get much worse once we have kids. Anyway, here are some that I thought of and/or have in my collection.

1. Qwirkle - Great for multiple classification skills.

2. Haba games - This is cheating, but I think they are all great and developmentally appropriate. They pretty much cover all the skills emerging at various ages. Here are some good examples: First Orchard, Animal Upon Animal, Monza.

3. Ticket to Ride / Rummy - Again, cheating a bit by including two in one but they are essentially the same idea: learning to collect sets and when it is best to lay them down.

4. Dixit - Creativity and communication.

5. FITS - Real life Tetris, with some slightly different scoring. Great for spatial relations skills.

Really at a gaming low point right now. My wife's schedule doesn't match up with mine at all and it just seems like I'm putting in a lot more hours at work. Oh well. I like overtime pay. And my in-laws were in town last week.

Hansa Teutonica: But hey, it's never so bad when I get a game of Hansa in. I was on a pretty bad losing streak. But I saw an opening and seized it, quickly nabbing both remove 3 discs and a +4 action disc. I more or less coasted from there for a satisfying victory.

Tragedy Looper: More Mastermind action. And more teaching, though it was just one person and he picked up on it pretty quickly. We did a normal scenario. I had the Protagonists completely snowed, not even considering the real plots. Very, very satisfying.
