Right we all adore music... I mean music is where it is at, where it all begins and where it all ends... it's pretty much everything.

A perfect album is one where every song earns its place, hits its mark and the whole thing is just perfect
(how can you not own it!).

Here are mine, what are yours>?

Rules:

* You are allowed 5 and only 5.
* You are welcome to list albums others have already mentioned.
* No best ofs
* Share the thumbs freely and any negatively privately

Perfect Albums:

Dylan: (lots I'll have) Desire
(Dylan, Dylan, Dylan - here in this album is a heck of an offering)
Tom Paxton: Under American Skies
(A brilliant fully studio produced album that packs a punch while being sad but hopefully).
David Bowie: Hunky Dory
(I can't think of music without this and can't fathom Bowie without it.)
Lenard Cohen: New Skin for Old Ceremony
(Just a cracking thing to own - sex and suffering - next stop humanity.)
Christie Moore: Ride On
(Finally a studio album where Chis stays put and does what he can do.)

(Please ignore the politics and enjoy the peace)

For me it begins and ends with Quadrophenia by The Who. It's not a rock opera, it's a fugue. It states several musical themes, each relating to the four members of the band. The themes are then woven throughout the work, finally merging in The Rock, the penultimate song on the double album.

After that, this could change depending on the day and my mood, but let's say Up the Bracket by The Libertines, Satellite Rides by The Old 97's, A Hard Day's Night by The Beatles, and Costello Music by The Fratellis.

5 Perfect Albums.

Luna Bewitched

Yo La Tengo I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One

Mogwai Young Team

Bob Dylan Blood on the Tracks

Miles Davis Kind of Blue

Since I could only pick five, I went with whatever came to mind first. If I would put more thought into this project I would drive myself mad.

I thought the task of picking 5 perfect albums would be difficult, but when I focused on which albums I would sorely miss if lost, it became quite easy. This means however, some of my favorite musicians are not included in my list.

5 Perfect Albums in no particular order:

Okay...I'm going to just stick to the 80's to keep my head from exploding trying to make choices.

Screaming Blue Messiahs, Bikini Red: Great punk-rock-a-billy from the 80's. Fun! Fun! Fun!

Bruce Springsteen, Nebraska: Melancholy story-telling at its best (and I'm a Dylan fan).

U2, Boy: You could be forgiven for thinking that U2 would be an amazing band if you focused on their debut album.

Life's Too Good, The Sugarcubes: Another debut album that captured the essence of it's performers in their purest form. Bjork and her husband make this a perfect album, almost like a Dean Martin/Jerry Lewis team-up.

and...yeah...

Graceland, Paul Simon.

I don't know if its perfect or if its just favorite album during my formative college years...

Snoop Dogg: Doggystyle
I just love the in your face audacity of it this guy...really kid at the time. It just hit a cord.

Thelonious Monk: Straight No Chaser
Just great, pure sophistication.

Glitch Mob: Drink the Sea
This one is obviously not from college, but I came across it a few years ago and it just kicks me in the gut. I really like albums that kick you in the gut.

Guns and Roses: Appetite for Destruction
Speaking of which. Its like Snoop Dogg's work in a different musical genre. Just flip the on switch and fly.

Metallica: Master of Puppets
I remember some teenage kid saying that Metallica was weak. I think she like Blink 310 or something. If I knew her better I would have given her this album and told come back and tell me about weak. But that would have been creepy and weird. Again, just pure raw energy.

Though I'm kind of shocked I'm not including either Thriller or Off the Wall on there...I feel like one of those two should be. But as an ALBUM, a beginning to end experience, those five are by far my favorites. I think that wall of them exude pure energy. Thelonius Monk is the least in your face about it, but you gotta have something chill in the mix. If I had a sixth choice I'd throw in Glenn Gould's 1980 Goldberg Variations, but I'm not a classical expert and I suspect that if someone gave me any competant recording of this work I'd most likely dig it.

Impossible to say as it changes each week. But perhaps consistently in the top region of my fave listens:

John Martyn - Inside Out (in fact all of those five 1970s albums of his are a work of sheer genius)

Beach Boys - Smile (or in fact Smile Sessions, Brian Wilson - an undisputed genius)

Kraftwerk - Trans-Europe Express (extraordinary)

Blur - Think Tank (and to think they did this without Graham Coxon)

Nanci Griffith: MCA Years Retrospective (ok not a real album per se but still, an absolutely mind-blowingly amazing collection of her early work).

Only five? Ask me again next week...

Björk: Debut. Perhaps the best debut album ever.
The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. I'll only say one of their albums.
Sielun Veljet: Softwood Music Under Slow Pillars. I'll only say one of their albums.
Suzanne Vega: Solitude standing. A woman and a voice, telling stories. And what stories!
Black Sabbath: Black Sabbath. As a bonus, this album was released the day I was born.

There are more, but it was only five.

1. Built to Spill - Perfect From Now On

Indie rock's greatest band's greatest album. The best guitar work on an album in the past 30 years. Face meltingly awesome with a big emotional kick.

2. Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West

Post modern masterpiece. Twangy western/cowboy theme, like a mix of Outlaw country and The Clash

3. Van Morrison - Astral Weeks

Probably the most emotionally affective album I've ever listened to. He leaves everything out there and his jazz band is incredible. I can't believe how young he was when he made this.

4. The Clash - London Calling

The greatest double-LP of all-time. Not a single stinker in 19 tracks. I will listen to this at any time. Mastery of so many styles...

5. Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

Devastating album...incredibly startling compositions and bursting with a tormented energy. It's so good but it drains me.

Vaughan Williams, Bryden Thomson, London Symphony Orchestra - Symphony nr. 5

Tom Waits and The Waterboys could have several records on the list. Talk Talk could have Laughing Stock on as well, but Spirit is just a little better.

The Vaughan Williams entry is primarily because of the Romanza. The whole record is wonderful, naturally, but that particular rendition of the romanza is the best thing humankind has created so far, imo..

There might be a miniscule amount of hyperbole in the entry above, sorry about that

(Superb Manchester alt rock with added moodscapes from end to end. Still love it!)

Bob Geldof - The Happy Club
(Try it, you might like it, guaranteed filler free. Backing band are the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. The Vegetarians of love is worth a listen too.)

Led Zeppelin - IV
(What can you say? Sometimes cliches are cliches because they are true. This is an awesome album.)

OK, I'm not sure that there is such a thing as a perfect album but these rank right up there (at least for me).

In no particular order

Yeti by Amon Düül II. Early kraut rock. Influential stuff.
In The Land Of Grey And Pink by Caravan. Canterbury scene prog.
Stupid Dream by Porcupine Tree. The PT album that always draws me back.
The Velvet Underground & Nico by The Velvet Underground & Nico. I don't think I need to say anything.
Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh by Magma. French weird jazz rock with modern classical influences, sung in a constructed language called Kobaïan.

But I could quite easily have had Kraftwerk's Trans-Europe Express, maybe Gong's Camembert Electrique and Comus's First Utterance and Sun Ra's Space Is the Place.

Damn, had to narrow it down from 24 albums I know well enough to champion as 'perfect', to 18 that I want to listen to right now, to 13 that I've listened to at least 100 times... then just going on gut:

1. Pixies - Doolittle
2. Nas - Illmatic
3. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
4. Kendrick Lamar - good Kid, m.A.A.d city
5. Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime

Great list! A lot of really eclectic tastes.

Had to think about this for a bit. Here's my five:

Rush - Moving Pictures
Alan Parsons Project - Turn of a Friendly Card
Steely Dan - Aja
Bonobo - Black Sands
Royksopp - Junior

25. Board Game: Arbitration: A Game of Decision Making [Average Rating:4.70 Unranked]
Board Game: Arbitration: A Game of Decision Making
I always have a hard time deciding on my top 5, 10, 100 one or the others. With this in mind, here's a list of five albums I like a lot by five bands I like a lot in no particular order:

1. Sonic Youth - Washing Machine
I have all the albums and a lot (if not most) of the solo and side projects. I bought Daydream Nation in my late teens just to not listen to it for a year or so, until one day it made *click* and here's my favouritest band ever! (Alternate choices: A Thousand Leaves, NYC Ghosts & Flowers, ...)

2. Hawkwind - X In Search of Space
Hawkwind entered my ever changing list of top bands pretty late, but they took it by storm. Whilst I prefer Lemmy-Era-Hawkwind I also like many of the 80's & 90's albums. (Alternate choices: Hall of the Mountain Grill, Doremi Fasol Latido, ...)

3. PJ Harvey - Rid of Me
I started listening to PJ Harvey a bit after Sonic Youth and listened to most albums A LOT. (Alternate choices: Dry, Is This Desire, ...)

4. The Clash - London Calling
I go through crazes with my listening of music. Early British Punk (and to an extend Oi!) was the first big craze( is this even a word?). My favourite Band of the time: The Clash; favourite album: London Calling. (Alternate choices: Combat Rock, Give 'em enough rope, ...)

5. Billy Bragg & Wilco - Mermaid Avenue (I or II??)
I probably could have chosen another Billy Bragg album but I listened most to this if remember well.
