Video Game: Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth
I started a modded game of Civ:BE using a Spice War mod I found in the Steam Workshop. I choose Harkonnen as my faction and proceeded to build my military machine on the arid oceanless world I choose to play on. Its about as close to a real Dune scenario as I have found. The Diplomacy is still the same as Civ:BE and most of the units are the same except that the main infantry units have been renamed according to your Faction, although they still have stats as the infantry in base game do. In my game, the Bene Tielaxu have pretty much run rampant over the whole map, leaving my Harkonnens left to pick up the scraps of House Ecaz, Atreides and Richese. I don't think that I can win this one, since they are already 3 times my size and have better tech etc. Not sure if I will play all the way out or resign... We'll see what happens tonight when I can play again.

More Diablo II LOD, with the Paladin named Crazyman that I created last week. I didn't play long, but I advanced my character a couple of levels. He should reach level 12 next time so I can start using the Charge, Zeal, and Cleansing abilities (I've been saving up my points so I can get them all at once at 12th level).

Getting a jump on the weekend early and playing some payday... started out trying for Framing Frame hard solo stealth... had at least 3 attempts at the gallery, but finally got out with 5 paintings, but broke stealth. Day 2 was no ambush, so it was easy... then I played Day 3 for almost an hour... found the 5 devices.. single-handedly moved 8 bags of coke to the vault.. grabbed a couple of bags of gold.. and was surprised by a guard on the way out... stealth was broken despite getting jammer down.. at which point all my stealth progress was for nothing.. so I rage quit the mission and played Firestarter with Rudy. Later Matt joined us for cook off, White Xmas and Hoxton revenge! But gosh I hate Framing Frame!!

I also did Jewelry Store on Deathwish for the first time... it turned out to be pretty easy.. case the store and make my way into the back. mask up and tie some civilians down. Hop out the window to deal with the lone secuirity guard in the fenced off area at the back... then drill the safe for 330 seconds+. once the safe was empty take the front of the store and secure all the civilians there and on the street. Finally take all the bags of Jewelry to the van. Profit!

18th Strata! Sooooo close!

My main party seems to have settled into Protector, Ronin, Dark Hunter, Medic, and Hexer.

I still haul out other guild members from time to time, particularly my survivalist that I've somewhat speced to harvesting resources as well as being a bow master.

Even though this is also a mandatory challenge game, I'm still enjoying every moment. I guess turn based dungeon crawls are just more my thing.

..of course, I also played some Solforge, VVVVVV, Boom Beach, AdVenture Capitalist, Minecraft, Sudoku, and fantasy baseball. And the week's not over yet!! meeple

I played this ... and was bored with it.

Even on a tiny map, it takes a long time. I think I played in three or four sittings, and each time I asked myself, Why am I doing this? It wasn't an unpleasant experience--the music was nice, and the game developed in somewhat surprising ways, and I was able to make things go my way and eventually win--but it wasn't exciting or satisfying or even very interesting.

As often happens in 4X games, I got into a winning position about a third of the way in, and after that it was all just maintenance.

About the only 4X game I like anymore (and only sometimes) is Master of Orion, on a small map. I can play that in one sitting, so there's not enough time to get bored with it.

I really, really like this game. Granted, I know I'm biased as I love the Dragon Age Series in general, but still. 55 hours in with no sign of stopping anytime soon says something.

I keep forgetting to add this!

I've been playing in a league. It's fun but I'd always rather be playing Payday 2 with my friends so it's kinda taken a back seat. So I play every other day or so instead of every day.

It's still fun, but not what I'm into. When I signed up for the league SIX MONTHS AGO I was really into it.

Played the High rarity draft.
3-1!
I ended up going aqgro-mobility Nekrium/Tempys.
Game one, mirror match sort of. Spite mages knocked out his spite hydras (hah) L3 Dreadknight put me in the lead with ridiculous regen. Got a L2 phoenix egg (underdrop..?) at the end of a rank and opponent conceded (I had a slight lead to begin with.) W
Game two, faced weirbots, opponent hit patriarch almost every play with tinkers, arbiters and relic scouts. Never had a chance. L
Game three, overgrown spite hydra3, play korok3 and windweaver 1, hydra scoots away from blocker all three hit for >40 damage. W
Game four, Board filled with wyverns and frostfang maidens all game. Lots of move-damage... Emberwind evoker2 comes out and even his broodqueens evaporate in a puff of flame and cinder. W

Can't remember everything I drafted. here's a partial list:
Ator, thunder titan
2 Korok, Khan of Kadras
Everflame Phoenix
Cindersmoke Wyvern
2 Lavafused Asir
2 frostfang maiden
Emberwind Evoker
2 Darkfrost reaper (used once to kill some necromoebas oozelings and push damage but otherwise never played)
3 Xrath, Dreadknight of Varna
Hammerfang (+Emberwind and Lavafused asir can hurt or even frostfang maiden when enemy board gets full)
Borean Windweaver
2 Dreadbolt (key removal, won me some games)
2 Byzerak Spitemage
Cacklebones(never played, always had a dreadbolt/spitemage do my removal)
Spite Hydra
Progeny of Xith (never played)

I've had quite a few days off recently so I thought I'd knock over my backlog of short games. I'm hoping my schedule will be clear for the inevitable time-sink of Witcher 3 in a few short weeks.

But this week I played (and completed):

Valiant Hearts, a super touching and wonderful puzzler. It's especially pertinent because today marks the centenary celebration of ANZAC Day here in Australia. Lest we forget.

Transistor, wonderful art direction and haunting music. I even spent an afternoon playing this soundtrack in the background. Excellent stuff. I also ended up really enjoying the battle system despite the initial opaqueness of it all.

Rayman Legends, if anyone is also playing this game ... add me on PSN!

Still playing Dark Souls, believe it or not. I think this is week 5.

I started a third character. I'm playing a fast, assassin-style character that will focus on Dexterity-based weapons and enter the Blade of the Darkmoon covenant as soon as possible. Joining that covenant requires me to prioritize racing to Anor Londo, which will be a nice change of pace. I also need 30 Faith to take advantage of the miracle Darkmoon Blade, which is the strongest weapon buff in the game. I like the idea of an Occult Assassin, and getting 30 Faith early means that, not only do I have to race to Anor Londo earlier than I normally would, I have to build up a fourth stat that isn't Dexterity (primary damage), Vitality (health) or Endurance (stamina / equip load). On the bright side I get to use the miracle Lightning Spear, which should help with the three bosses I need to defeat to reach the Darkmoon Tomb in Anor Londo (Church Gargoyles, Quelaag, Iron Golem).

For the early game, I'm using Astora's Straight Sword. I have the Great Scythe, but may not use it much as it feels a little too much like my previous Two-Handed Tank character (who used a Zweihander, or Ultra-Greatsword class weapon).

I need to help at least one player defeat a boss in order to join the Warriors of Sunlight, which gives me the Lightning Spear miracle. So far, that has been hilarious. First, I co-oped with a player who was a very obvious newbie. Since I didn't have a microphone to communicate (using only gestures), I couldn't stop him from charging away from the boss door and toward the basement exit that is guarded by Havel. Havel took him out in one hit before I even caught up with him.

The next player to summon me was the total opposite. Either a hacker or a very skilled and dedicated player. He was in Undead Burg with the pyromancer's starting equipment... but already had Dragon Form, which means he went down through New Londo, Blighttown, and Great Hollow, AND somehow farmed drakes in the Valley of the Drakes. I don't know much about Dragon Form, but he seemed to have unlimited lightning breath, so I'm guessing he was a hacker.

Clearly, he had summoned me for his own amusement. He was hoping that *I* was a newb, using gestures first to direct me toward the Black Knight who guards the Blue Tearstone Ring, and then toward Havel. I actually thought that was pretty funny. I'm confident against Havel 1-on-1, but eventually I did die in the ensuing chaos with two of us rolling around.

laugh

I took it as a friendly reminder that I should probably go fight him solo and get the ring. I won't be using it for very long but it's nice early when I would rather get some extra damage from Dexterity instead of raising Endurance right away.

For my THIRD attempt at jolly co-operation, I was summoned by a player who seemed fairly average in skill and progression - a sorcerer who had probably made a visit to Rickert for Heavy Soul Arrow. He actually summoned two white phantoms, and the second guy was also playing an assassin-samurai style character. His armor was slightly different, but we were both wearing the Thief Mask. He was two-handing an Uchigatana. I entered the host's world a couple of seconds before the other assassin killed Havel, apparently by himself, as the first thing that happened was I received 1500 souls.

laughlaugh

Then, we both waited in by the boss door for our host, positioned quite aesthetically, forming a triangle with the door. After at least 15-20 seconds, our host arrived and we both bowed. When we walked onto the bridge, the host and I climbed the rear tower to clear out the two archers and I positioned myself for a plunging attack against the Taurus Demon. The other assassin ran out to near the other end of the bridge where the Demon enters. Apparently, though, the boss only enters in response to the Host walking forward a bit on the bridge. So the sorcerer went down, as I surveyed things from the tower, figuring the other two would bait the Demon into my plunging attack.

Nope. As soon as he appeared, the Katana-wielding uber-badass rolled straight in, as aggressively as possible, dodging the Taurus Demon's Heavy Swings with perfectly timed rolls. The sorcerer brought some artillery to bear with Heavy Soul Arrow. I helpfully observed, ready for a plunging attack that would never come.

laughlaughlaugh

This game. I tell ya.

Welp, with the Roguelike sale on Steam I decided to break down and grab the games i've been eyeing for a while. In particular I waited until an official release of Crypt of the Necrodancer, which just came out and I grabbed it ASAP. And it is every bit as outstanding as I had hoped. the rhythm based gameplay sucked me in exactly as I expected. I also will never play as the bard. It just feels wrong.

I also picked up Road Not Taken, which I had been looking at but wasn't ready to pull the trigger on. It was interesting but it didn't grab me enough to pull me away from Crypt. It's a sort of randomly generated (I think?) puzzle game that has you picking things up and throwing them to achieve your goals. It has some neat ideas but it hasn't really won me over completely.

However, my surprise addiction, which I can't seem to put down, even to play more Necrodancer, is Heavy Bullets. I saw it for 2 dollars and it sounded neat, and I'd kind of been looking for a FPS type of game to try. This thing sucked me in in that randomly generated way that I seem to love so much. It has an eerie, neon creepy visual style to it that I love, it gets a LOT nastier as you go, and what I really dig is that it lets you save between levels. There are apparently two bosses; I've seen one and it's nasty as hell, but it's feasible, but it doesn't pull any punches. It's the kind of game that's way more open than is comfortable and you have to be careful to make it.

Also, worms. GODDAM WORMS

GW2 with tickmanfan and tatoolo. We followed Rudy's story, which involved him being involved in a series of honor fights in which Kevin and I could not participate per se, but could only BOO at Rudy's opponents and throw "helpful weapons" on the ground for Rudy to use, such as bones, vines, and feathers. Powered with feathers, Rudy was able to emerge triumphant, as Kevin danced on the rooftops.

More SolForge -- still half a day left of the High-Rarity WW draft, which only has a 2 ticket entry fee with 1 refunded if you don't 0-4. Unfortunately, you do NOT keep any cards you draft, so it's basically throwing away a ticket or two unless you manage at least a 3-1 record. Spoiler: I did not manage that.

I am planning on making a deep run this coming Friday.

I am really looking forward to it. This will be the first planned deep run I have made.

After the 17c update, I made some big changes to my ancients. I bought 1000 levels on Pluto, 90 on Fragsworth and Bhaal and 16 levels on Juggernaut. Thus vastly increasing the potency of my Midas start.

I am planning on dropping four more ascensions worth of HS on my active ancients.

Additionally I am very close to the point where gilding Lilin makes sense. So I will be keeping about 20k HS in my bank and when I level Astrea to 1000 I will shift my gilds to her. Then when I am done with this run I will move gilds to Lilin.

I am pretty darn certain I can reach z26k and will be very disappointed if I don't. My top zone right now is z2454, so 26k is a fair amount farther than that, but I have been playing for at least 6 weeks since I made that run (though the bulk of those HS have gone into Solomon).

I would love to reach z28k, but that might be beyond my capabilities. I will probably wrap the run up after a steady three maybe four hours of clicking/skills. I am going to start the run Thursday night so I can have some EDR in the bank, and have about 20k zones behind me prior to going active.

Whatever ends up happening, I'm certain to get some gilds out of this, and increase the efficacy of my QAs. And I really look forward to testing my build.

Started playing this Friday, and while I liked it I haven't been back.
Hopefully I can tear myself away from CH and play some more of this.

But that will take a lot of self control.

I started playing Saints Row 4 this weekend. After the first hour or so, I was thinking "do I really feel like playing another open-world driving/shooting game? I'm not sure I'm in the mood for it...". Then I got super powers and changed my mind quite quickly! This has much more in common with Prototype or Crackdown than it does with GTA or Saint's Row 3. I recently switched from having my character dressed as Boba Fett, complete with holdout blaster, to looking like David Tennant's Doctor with a nailgun. The game mechanics are a little stale, but overall I'm enjoying the ride. I just wish I had someone sitting next to me while I play to laugh at silly stuff.

This weekend, Skyrim was free-to-play, so I decided to give it a go. Unfortunately, like Oblivion before it, this style of game just doesn't hook me. I definitely don't play games for lore and heavy world-building. I found the controls using a controller were borderline awful, and couldn't get anything resembling a flow during combat encounters or even navigating the world. Graphically, all the characters fell into the uncanny valley for me. I think it's cool how everyone loves this game, but it's not for me, nosiree.

I also completed my first stealth mission in Payday 2. Which is to say, I watched three other players finish a stealth mission while I waited patiently to bag up jewelry. Not for me, thanks.

I didn't play it, but I finally bought something for myself after being assaulted with deals. I picked up Shadow of Mordor, even though it probably won't be as butter-smooth on my system as I know it can be. I'll wait to download and install until I get my new solid-state drive and get that up and running in a few weeks. In fact, I might need a break before playing after I finish Saints Row since they both share a fair bit of common ground.

---Tangential gaming stuff---

I put up some frames on a nearby wall and plan to order some 8x10 prints. I've gotten a fair number of video game wallpapers saved; if you find any galleries you think are cool, let me know!

I played two very short, very narrative-focused RPGs with some VGGers on Saturday morning! It was good, silly fun and I might try to get involved a bit more until my usual RPG group starts meeting up regularly. I'm toying with the idea of running a Fate game if I can find a few people who are interested, but I get very gun-shy when it comes to running games. Being a player is nice because you can zone out a bit when you're not in the spotlight, but GMs need to be on the ball all the time!

More U5: Lazarus. I engaged in a lengthy quest chain, only to find that either a necessary item disappeared, or the item was never there in the first place. Sure, it's a sidequest chain, but still.

Other than that, I walked from Paws, to Trisnic, to Greyhaven, exploring and helping all along the way. I then went back to Britain and bought a boat, which I used to visit Buccaneer's Den. That was a great place. I did a bunch of stuff there, and then met the mage Sutek - that was an experience. I then went to the Lycaeum and swapped Gwenno for Mariah in my party. After some shenanigans between Greyhaven and the Den, I visited Serpent's Hold, which was pretty cool. I checked out some of the local islands and found a hard-to-access mini-dungeon the dev's put in (and killed my first dragon!). Right now, I'm in Jhelom, having obtained my final mantra and another Word of Power. I've got some odd jobs to do for the Resistance in Jhelom, however, so I'm not quite done there yet.

I've also been playing Final Fantasy: Record Keeper like crazy. It's kind of a succinct mash-up of every non-MMO main game Final Fantasy - a madcap jaunt through all Final Fantasies ever. My party is Cloud, Aeris, Kain, Rydia and Joseph (of FFII fame) right now. It's a lot of fun.

Played this on PC again. Went through the whole game in two days. Took me a lot longer last time.

I'm pretty sure the first few levels took hours less. Knowing what I can do means that I could quickly find the right paths again, even not remembering them. So the end game came a lot faster. The insane enemies came a lot faster. I wasn't really ready to face them, but luckily I could just run away. Running is what I do best. ^^

Killing Floor 2 released on 4/21 in early access. The game feels considerably polished, but it limited right now with only 3 maps and 4 perks. For all intents and purposes this is a paid beta, but the game certainly has lasting potential and has the same addictive fun as the first one.

Tried this again. still experiencing frustrating desync (or is it lag?)
Can't see, enjoy the game when stuff keeps jumping around. Which sucks, because it seems really well put together outside of that issue.
Tried again again, and sticking to it.

I would like to jump into a a-rpg, but I'm not sure what. Anyone have any ideas?

*Not doing d2 (paid for it twice in the past, not dropping 20 to reacquire it) or d3 (played it, got bored.)
**Tried Grim Dawn, but 5 mins in got teleported to the middle of the ocean and couldn't do anything. Doesn't seem ready for prime time.

Okay, why don't you just make five a bit more shiny and then that would be the most shiny? ... Because these go to six.
Played a bit more Wrack. It's a decent mindless shooter. Nice for relaxing. Though at the end of level 2 I couldn't beat the boss, I just didn't have enough ammo to kill him and I couldn't reach him to use my sword. Restarted the level and chopped loads of enemies to save ammo and then I took him down easily. I'll be more sparing with my ammo from now on.

I've also been playing a bit of Quest of Dungeons on my tablet. It's a decent rogue-like very much in the style of Rogue. Quite tough too, or at least it is with a mage.

Oh, and continuing on with Pillars of Eternity too.

Continuing my first playthrough of this fantastic trilogy. You can find my blogs and reviews of ME1 and ME2 on the game pages (and blog of ME3). ME3 is more similar to ME2, a few minor improvements (no Illusive Man after every mission, more weapon customisation), a few minor annoyances (reticule is hard to see, missions not well explained). On Normal, I think the combat is a bit more challenging, you have to watch for flanking enemies, grenades, turrets, melee. The story is slow to get going and to grasp, but it's good. The design focus really has been on the combat, the RPG elements are relatively weaker.
