There is a new ancient: Revloc. It gives a chance of double rubies from clickables.

I think I will be buying it after this next ascension.

And most intriguingly there is a new tab to the right of the ancients which says "Coming Soon".

I wonder what that will bring.

I'm hoping for transcendence.

-Also some new skins for clickables and the heroes.

I'd briefly mentioned how excited I was for Witcher 3 a couple weeks ago in my Witcher 2 blurb. I can now excitedly say that this game fires on all cylinders for me. CDPR has knocked this one out of the park. By sheer luck I managed to have the last three days off and much to the chagrin of my wife, its essentially been one huge Witcher 3 marathon for me. I haven't vegged out on a game like this in so long.

Witcher 3 ticks all the boxes for me. It has a huge - HUGE world. Despite putting a number of hours into that is probably approaching a part time job numbers, I can glance at the map and see what a miniscule part of the whole world I've touched -- and there's at least one more area that's just as big I haven't even set foot in. The world is also absolutely gorgeous. Sunsets, huge vistas, sprawling swamps, forests, the biggest, liveliest city I've ever seen in a game, endless waterways and seas with weather both calming and terrifying -- its an incredibly varied and lived-in world with (if my counts are correct) eleventy billion nooks and crannies, all of which seem to have something going on in them. CDPR includes a little thank-you note in the box that encourages everyone to explore this world, boasting 200 hours of content. I took a look at that and scoffed. Another developer posting inflated numbers, right? Three days later I'm not so sure. 200 -- or at least something dangerously close -- sounds absolutely doable if you really get engaged with the world like I have.

The story and voice acting so far is top notch as expected -- I've completed the prologue and subsequently been set free in the aforementioned huge area where I subsequently said 'screw the story for now, lets explore!' So I'm not terribly far into the narrative, but what I HAVE seen is great.

A fantastic return to form is how contracts on monsters (and missions in general) fold out. Somewhat lacking in Witcher 2 was the investigative part of tracking and hunting. Now you'll be liberally using your witcher senses to hunt down clues, which will lead you to the next, and the next in an exciting chase after information on whatever baddie is next to be fell by your blade -- it's almost Sherlock Holmes meets Boba Fett; Investigative bounty hunting!

While the positives are seemingly neverending, do note that the game does have a little bit of that open-world-rpg quirkiness you see in this sort of game. Several users have experienced a fair share of bugs. I've been lucky to not encounter any of these setbacks but I supposed its best one knows what they're getting into. CDPR has a pretty stellar track record of continued support and overhauling their released games as needed, so I expect these to continue to be ironed out over the coming weeks.

In conclusion, I think this is THE game for me in 2015. It's still somewhat early but when I look at the release list for the rest of the year I don't see anything that's going to suck me in like The Witcher. I'm fairly confident this is my Game of the Year -- I'll be pleasantly surprised if I'm wrong!

Started playing this last week. I'm on the 7th floor or so, and starting to lose steam. I really like it, but the combat is fairly repetitive. I really love the oldschool dungeoncrawl feel with the nice graphics.

Wanted to play this to see if Tex Murphy still holds up, since the Martian Memorandum was too tinypixeloldschool for me. This one is much better, and also funnier. But it's also still a somewhat dated interface, and kludgey enough to use that I'm leaning towards not buying the current Tex Murphy bundle, even though this, Tesla, and MM, were each games I bought whole bundles for just because they had the one game. Too bad I did that without checking my rampant nostalgia, but I guess I don't need any more right now.

This was on sale last weekend on PSN and I've slowly been getting into it. So far I've beaten about 20 missions. I usually get gold rank on the first try - the others I'll come back to when I finish the campaign.

The original Frozen Synapse was a turn-based tactical game for the PC. Prime gets an aesthetic makeover for consoles (and Vita), but appears to be largely the same game.

As a fan of the genre, I'm enjoying it quite a bit, though I wouldn't say it's spectacular. Rather than moving units one at a time, here you enter in-depth commands for each unit before locking in the whole turn. The squad then acts simultaneously, with each turn taking 5 seconds. You can actually enter more than 5 seconds worth of commands for a unit, but you are only committed in 5-second chunks.

There is no leveling, upgrading, tech-trees, or equipment in Frozen Synapse Prime. Nor do you determine your starting position on a map or even your squad composition. The focus is purely on how you move through and control space. Shotgunners are very accurate (quick kills) but have limited range. Machinegunners have much longer range, but the further away they are from the enemy, the more time it takes before the burst lands a fatal shot. Snipers are slow-moving and slow to fire but can kill anything in one hit from any distance. Grenadiers can arc/bounce explosives for multi-kills, at medium range and without destroying terrain. Rocketeers are slow to move, slow to fire, but can shoot from any distance and destroy terrain (along with any unit in the blast radius).

There may be more unit types, but those are the only ones I've had on the field in 20 or so missions.

The planning-to-action ratio in FSP is pretty high. A mission might take half an hour but the final replay (all units taking their actions continuously) is usually 30-60 seconds. The way everything works encourages very risk-averse, controlling play. Sometimes you can catch enemy units by surprise, but often, the key seems to be making entire quadrants/corridors unnavigable. In each mission, I feel like I begin by taking away enemy options and then, once I gain a small advantage in numbers (frequently by the end of turn 1 or 2), I press that as far as I can.

It's a bit of a brain burn, to be honest. Fun, though. Soundtrack is also great but needs a few more tracks.

Well, I finally tried the Multiplayer to this game, using the public lobby. This is the first game I've ever played online, apart from Mario Kart 8. I've just bought a copy of Destiny, so it might not be the last.

My first mission went well, with skilled partners of higher level. The controls were a bit puzzling, and the lack of radar or time stopping were challenging. Using powers seems tricky.

Then I had a series of frustrations with inability to find a game, dropped connections, and leaders leaving mid-game. It seemed a bit difficult to find a game, especially one with a full complement of players, which makes levels very difficult. Died a lot. Not much medigel to be found either!

Finally I joined another game that went the distance, and succeeded by the skin of our teeth (no thanks to me, who was horrible and died regularly). (We died just as the shuttle arrived, but apparently completing 10 rounds counts as a success, even if you die in the 11th round, although you lose some bonuses).

Maybe I'll find out how to use voice chat, then I can get some tips off my squaddies. (Requires a USB headset)

Finally beat this game. It started off pretty easy, but difficulty definitely ramped up towards the end -- there was at least one sidequest area (treetops) that I decided was way too frustrating to bother with, especially as I felt like the last level's missile-dodging platforming combined with tough bosses was enough challenge for me.

In retrospect, the game felt a lot more like a beat-em-up platformer than a metroidvania, but I'd still recommend it -- lots of very funny touches and references to other video games, including

tiny musical quotations of the Super Mario Brothers world 1-2 theme in the final level's music

which made me smile.

A bit more of this, since I was curious to see if I could build one of the new hot decks in spite of lacking a number of the newest cards. I did finally manage to make an infinite deck, which is something I'd always wanted to try, and naturally I can see how it would work better with more copies (or in some cases, ANY copies) of various fancy legends and new heroics.

I am very eager for the official release in the Fall, which promises not only a full new set (instead of these annoying "4 new legends you don't get" mini-releases), but also an improved UI to speed up the interface. Still, even without those things the campaign mode is interesting, the variety of available cards is nice, and the daily rewards are the most generous of any online CCG I've played.

"Survive for your Life" is the tagline

I've been playing some GoatZ. It comes with two large new maps that are both the same map with some slight changes. The "Before outbreak" map is the regular Goat Sim sandbox style gameplay, except you are a zombie goat and you can turn npcs into zombies. The "After outbreak" map is the same map, except with flaming cars, barricades, wrecked vehicles, and a lot more zombies, and it uses the new survival mode mechanics.

In 'survival mode', you can actually die, you have health and hunger, and you have to eat constantly or start losing health. Survival mode also features the new crafting system. In survival, the game gives you a short term goal/mission every few minutes. If you complete a mission, you get a health and hunger boost. The longer you play, more enemies and crazier weirder enemies appear (e.g. zombie fireman, which is a zombie elephant with a bumper car attached to its back that sprays fire from its trunk) until you eventually die and the game saves your scores for that run. It's interesting in that it adds some actual "game" to Goat Simulator.

From gallery of Aarontu
"I have no idea what I'm doing"

Some highlights and thoughts:
-More drivable vehicles, like a wrecking ball and bumper cars
-The parachute is fun and feels a bit like Just Cause 2.
-There's a TV studio where you can go on stage, the game camera snaps to the TV camera view, and you trigger the laugh track as you wreck the set and turn Conan O'Brien into a zombie.
-All the mutators work on the new maps, including the "after outbreak" map. Zombie T-Rex works, but is a bit too big for a lot of the architecture.
-When you glitch into the floor or something in Survival mode, your survival run is effectively over (you can't simply respawn without losing your current run's stats).

read the (faux) reviews for this DLC in game!

If you like Goat Simulator, you'll like this, which is basically more of the same and some variety.

I beat this as part of beating New Vegas again for my 2015 Video Game challenge. I once again evacuated the peaceful tribes out of Zion.

I may regret that choice as it means that I lose the Burned Man as a Merchant, but it was what I felt like doing. So be it.
This is easily the most beautiful of the fallout games, and I really hope that Fallout 4 (if or when it ever happens) has either some similar DLC or map sections as spectacular as Zion.

I installed (the beta version of) GOG Galaxy, and I've been playing my games there to see how it works. I hadn't played SMAC in a while, so I started a game last night--and ended up playing it all the way through.

There's a bug in the game. When I got close to the end, the game froze, and I had to reboot my computer. In fact, I had to do that several times before I finally got past the bug. While doing that, I remembered running into that very problem before, in two or three earlier games. Each time, a green ship on the map turned out to be the problem: as soon as I switched off its automatic movement, the game ran fine again. (I'm not a programmer, so I don't know what the real problem is; but now I know one way of fixing it.)

I enjoyed the game pretty well--in my own way. I don't think anybody else would likely play the way I did, though. I chose Chairman Yang and his Hive, which has always been my favorite faction (weird, I guess, since "socialism" is a dirty word to me). Colonel Santiago threatened me early on, but I got lucky and, much to my surprise, captured her main base, after which she surrendered. Then I remembered that I chose to play on Talent level--a notch or two lower than usual.

So, the whole game was very easy. When Sister Miriam threatened me, I gave her the same treatment. Morgan offered a pact of brotherhood for help in fighting the Believers, so I joined him. Then, when the Believers were gone, I noticed my allies were fighting Lal and his Peacekeepers, so I attacked him too and grabbed my share of his territory. He also surrendered to me before long.

Somewhere along the line, the University became our enemy and got defeated. It happened so quickly that I've forgotten just how it went.

Finally, only Dierdre and the Gaians were left to oppose me and my toadies. Unfortunately she was on another continent, and I had neglected my navy up to that point. I had to build some ships and transports to get to her. When I did, I went through her territory like a hot knife through butter. Even had drop troops to grab vacated cities by then. She was forced to surrender, and Planet was united under Hive rule.

During the game, I had automated almost everything, as I always do. The only decisions I made were base building and attacking--and refusing any unequal research trades but accepting all the others. Toward the end, even most of my military units were automated; I gave them free rein to attack any enemy they could get to. Naturally all my bases were controlled by a governor.

If I had to do all the micromanagement that's possible in this game (and which I know some players love to do), I'd never play it. But as long as I can get it to mostly play by itself, leaving me free to make a few high-level decisions, it's pretty fun.

During the week, I played a bit of Fire Emblem Awakening on my new 3DS. I'm still struggling a bit with hard mode since there is no way to grind reliably. I don't want to let any characters fall behind in level, but it's so hard to use low level characters in battle without having them die the very next turn.

Today is my birthday, so I had a party yesterday! After an afternoon of bowling, I played a few board games with friends as well as 4-player Starwhal, and Fibbage XL and Drawful from the Jackbox party pack (with some technical difficulties along the way).

This morning I played a bit of Shadow of Mordor, and died to a few orcs. I find the game doesn't telegraph what you should be doing in terms of an adequate challenge. I have done a few missions concerning a treacherous little orc named Ratbag, but the next story mission for him is killing a warchief of power level 10; I think maybe it's beyond what I can actually achieve at this point in the game, but the game doesn't really convey that well since in this sort of game, following the story missions is what I've been trained to do.

I'm not as enamored with the game as I'd hoped (perhaps a case of getting my expectations too high). The camera is a bit wonky and it makes navigating the world feel really clumsy; I'm getting caught on walls and corners fare more often than I'd like. I also find combat to be a bit irritating as well; once I have 3 or more orcs fighting me, it's a lot of mashing on A and countering attacks with Y. If I try to do a ground takedown, I can never finish it before I have to counter some other orc coming at me. If there are a half-dozen orcs, I can beat them, but it takes a solid two or three minutes of relatively repetitive combat. Perhaps things will get more dynamic as I unlock abilities (though to do that I need to get more "power" which requires trudging though more combat).

Finished both Guacamelee! and Batman: Arkham Asylum and posted thoughts to the Beaten list.

I was in the mood for something different and decided to go old-school with the original Wing Commander (1990). I vividly remember this from 1990 - I was in middle school and my friend Mike's family had just bought this really awesome computer from this new "Dell" manufacturer no one had ever heard of. It was a screaming 386 with a sound card and VGA graphics, and it ran Wing Commander and looked incredible. I played a few missions at his house now and then but never had the time to really sit down with it.

So far I've just run through the first mission a few times while testing out my joystick configuration and getting my head around the controls. I plan on diving in tonight. But at first glance, it looks like it's still quite playable.

I've been playing tons of Deus Ex: HR, as it's on my challenge list. What a good game. I'm trying for Give Me Deus Ex difficulty/ Pacifist/ Foxiest of the Hounds trophies for the sake of doing so. I remember having serious difficulties with the first (and only the first) boss, so I may end up bailing at that point - we'll see. I've only just completed the first real mission and, uh, wasn't fast enough to save the hostages. I've been intermittently using a walkthrough in order to make sure I don't screw up anything for the Pacifist/ Foxiest goals, and missed that I couldn't goof around if I wanted to save them. Whoops. Luckily, it doesn't seem to have much in the way of long-term ramifications. I am enjoying the pure stealth/ knock-out action, but part of me longs to rip through, guns a-blazing. Next playthrough, I guess.

My wife and I picked up Wheel of Fortune for the PS3 on a sale, and have been playing it lots. It's terrible, but we're having fun. It's so bad, in fact, it's dropping my opinion of the TV show, and I didn't know that was possible. The ruleset for the game is terrible. But whatever. It cost next too nothing and we're having a good time goofing around with it.

I've also been playing lots of Final Fantasy: Record Keeper.

For whatever reason, I wasn't in the mood to continue with any of the RPGs I had running or the ones on my challenge list, and felt like starting a new indie jRPG. I have a few unplayed in my library, but this was the only one left on my high-end list, so I thought I'd give it a go.

And so far, so awesome! It's got class choices and skill point allocations, and although it may lack the humor of Cthulhu Saves the World or Penny Arcade 3, I'm enjoying the gameplay quite a bit.

I'm amused to note that I died in the very first town -- there's an option to tell the innkeeper that you refuse to pay and want to stay for free, but this summons the town guards who attack and kill you, and there's no autosave, so I had to start over, including all the character creation/naming/&c.

More super hero silliness on this one. I'm really liking the level designs which are chock full of secrets but not too over the top. The unlockables are accessible fairly early, so you're not stuck saving up for "2X studs" the entire game. They did an awesome job capturing some of the heroes/villains character and likenesses even in Lego form.

Update: I found a secret/glitch. It's a money exploit. On The Lantern Menace mission, there's a spot where
Spoiler (click to reveal)
there are flames that cannot be completely extinguished. Using Superman's freeze breath, I could circle indefinitely in the fire, collecting lego studs. Since the fires never go out, and Supes is invincible,
you can rack up a healthy chunk of change.

I've kept playing Inquisition. This entry will be slightly RSP-y. I'll keep the RSP elements at a minimum, but if someone wants to further comment on it, feel free to post a thread at the RSP forum, and I'll gladly join the discussion.

Now, the RPS segment: While I'm not sure I've ever mentioned it explicitly, the Dragon Age draws a lot of parallelisms with multiple real-world religions, governments and organizations. Some are more obvious than others, but Theda's main religion is particularly obvious it's based on Christianity: monotheist, prophet who died for the good of mankind, organization with lots of political influence... Certain elements of the Dragon Age world erode the subtlety, such as the physical manifestation of demons, and thus, the quality of the analogy. But even then, said analogy has always been an element I've liked from the series, and Inquisition employs it better than both previous entries. I still have to beat the game, so I don't know where this road will lead me but, for now, I'm liking it a lot.

The non-RSP elements of the writing are growing on me too. The characters in particular are extremely well developed, and have very interesting and engaging individual story arcs. I must admit that, initially, I didn't thought I'd like certain characters as much as I do now, but their story arcs are so good I can't but love each and every one of them.

And regarding the padding, sadly, is getting worse. But my initial impression has been confirmed it's an interface issue, not a content issue. In order to advance through the main story you must obtain "power", which you earn by completing quests. While you do obtain power from trivial quests, you can ignore most of them, if not all, and simply stick to resolving the more relevant activities. Thing is, the interface makes ignoring trivial quests almost impossible, as they are constantly highlighted on the war table, map and journal, and there's no way to make them go away.

The only way to control quest highlighting is making a single quest active, but there's no way of "ignoring" trivial quests, so they always show in your map and quest log. While I welcome the pad, as I both love exploring and find solving simple quests relaxing, sometimes I just want to stick to a certain quest/arc. It's then when the interface gets in the way, as having to search through multiple irrelevant entries/markers bogs you down constantly. And this comes from someone who is completing a lot of quests, so the actual number of quests I have to search through isn't as large as it could be.

In any case, I'm liking Inquisition a lot. Setting, plot and characters are as good as they've ever been. Combat is average, but this was never the reason for which I play the Dragon Age series, so I'm OK with that. We'll see how it progresses but, for what I've seen, the only major flaw it has are the aforementioned interface issues.

I keep coming back to this one, even though I now have a couple other choices (Panzer General II and Pacific General, both of which I've also played a little more).

Last night, when I was sleepy and should have gone to bed, I discovered a "Mini-Campaign" button on the main screen. I didn't remember that at all, so I played the first scenario of that campaign as Knight Marshal Calis. After several turns, my position looked hopeless, but somehow I managed to win.

I'm surprised how often that happens in this game (on Medium level). With just a few turns to go, my last objective is finally right in front of me but pretty well defended--and somehow I find a combination of attacks that gets me in under the wire.

I also have four regular campaigns going on--one for each leader. In all four, I've conquered the first two continents and am on to the third (where suddenly the maps are a lot bigger).

I got back into a saved game I haven't looked at for a couple weeks. I am playing as Hutama and stomping all over my enemies. I had a tough time with Samar (Sp?) as he was Affinity level 18 while I was 13 or 14. It was by sheer numerical advantage that I took his Capital and squished his Mind Flower before it came into full effect. I have assimilated the PAC, ARC and in the final war against the KP's now.

Decided to go back and do some NG+ in Dark Souls II.

I'm liking how they really remixed the levels to up the threat level to be appropriate to a high level player. It's not just more enemy HP and higher damage; there's a lot more enemies here, some of them behave more aggressively, and there's actually quite a bit of new loot around. The downside -- they really needed to do more with the bosses. Yes, some of them did get helper minions, but it really isn't enough; so far, I've taken down every single boss I've faced on the first try.

Bosses killed so far:
Pursuer (fought and successfully killed in the "optional" first fight)
The Last Giant
Dragonrider
Old Dragonslayer
Flexile Sentry
Ruin Sentinels (that's right -- the boss that took me over 12 hours of attempts in NG before I finally gave in and summoned another player for fell on my first attempt.)
Belfry Gargoyles
The Lost Sinner
Skeleton Lords

Even more Skyrim this weekend. Had some fun moments:

You know how the guards always tell you no lollygagging. When I was thrown into jail in Markarth another prisoner told me what he was in for: "Murder, Banditry and Lollygagging"

Also fun was when in Falkreath a man paid me a decent sum of money to bring the urn with his brothers ashes to the cemetary guy... sitting one table away in the same inn.

Looting the first piece of deadric armor was also an awesome moment.

Cleared a lot more tombs, killed more dragon priests (got Volsung!), freed Thorald by killing some arrogant Thalmor, finished the Mara questline so I can get married, became Thane of Hjalmarch and started building my own home between riften and Windhelm.

It's nice to see new quests pop up every now and then.

Continuing plays...

Solo: My replacement troops are coming along nicely. I'm using the Col. to prepare aliens for the killing blow from my newer troops. I have run all the exhalt intelligence missions now and am ready to assault their base. I have also been putting off the alien base mission, which I'll do pretty soon here so I can get moving on psionics.

Duo: I don't think we played much of this save in the last week. Things aren't going horribly. However I am really concerned that the game has hit a bug. My friend started building the officer training room, but he put it right were we needed a satellite uplink to go so I canceled it's construction. But now it's not on our list of rooms to make. I am hoping it'll open up again when we get another soldier to the appropriate rank, otherwise the entire game is garbage.

Also I totally TPK'ed us on the council mission where you extract an exhalt soldier. I had seen it once and forgot about the split spawn right up front. I spawned the thin man on the roof and then charged in--spawning the 2 on the ground. The thin men nailed shots at my sniper on the roof behind partial cover, and it all went downhill quickly from there. You know, flanking shots you need to score a critical but don't, 90% shots which miss--the usual. I tried to have the 1 remaining troop finish off the thin men before extracting him with some amount of experience, but he was killed.

I don't think I played much this week, just during a couple lunch hours. I returned to Anton in Arika(sp?) and got him started on a couple of custom pieces. then I started moving back towards Trinton to give the rat mafioso the fake sphere, and I am hardly making it through the road area! Huge fights--9 juggernaughts, 6 twilight bats, 4 crimson vines...fights like that. Everyone is running out of stamina the fights are going so long. Siren's Wail is my BFF and makes a lot of these fights much more manageable. Enemies have such horrible accuracy vs each other though, it's not nearly entertaining enough.

I didn't have much time for games last week but I'd say I mainly played this one as it was the browser week challenge game. There's nothing like an incentive for playing a game. Though it was a pretty good one thankfully.

Other games played last week:

Pocket RPG (Android) finally completed this 3D dungeon game. Not bad but a bit repetitive.
Devious Dungeon (Android) quite a good wee platformer with lots of weapons/armour and enemies requiring some tactics.
