Been playing tons of Okami HD.

I've reached the very last hub area (Kamui). Really enjoying the game and keeping up a breakneck pace through all of the many sidequests as well as the main storyline. I'm not too far away from having the best reflector (Solar Flare), and when I get it I will probably try out the first Demon Gate Trial.

The bossfights have been fun, but mostly an exercise in administering the most stylish beatdown. I have yet to use any healing items or even purchase the wooden mat. I do use steelfist sake to double my offense against bosses - but I've found so many in the world that I don't think I'll need to purchase any.

I turned off random encounters very early (equipped the peace bell). Even so, I've been raking in Demon Fangs and have always been able to afford the best special equipment the moment it becomes available. Soon I'll have everything but the Thief Glove. I had forgotten that this game has two different modes of fast travel, so I don't see much point in the Fog Pot when you can warp via mermaid pools (and don't even need the special coins once you get the brush technique).

Just an awesome game. Will probably finish Sunday or Monday. Going for 100%.

Played and finished Contrast.

It's a puzzler/platformer with an interesting style and unique idea. You play the imaginary friend of a little girl, and since you are imaginary, no-one can see you and you can see no-one, except the girl. However, you do see the shadows of everyone. The mechanism that sets the game apart is that you can "shift" into the shadows, where you then move in the two-dimensional shadow world. You use the shifting mechanism in particular to reach places that you cannot reach in the 3D world, e.g., when you have to get to a high balcony, you can move a light source in such a way that a diagonal shadow is cast from the floor to the balcony, then you "shift" and climb up to the balcony using the shadow.

The game is pretty short, I finished it in 5 hours, and got all the optionals too. The puzzles are mostly straightforward, though occasionally I thought the jumping mechanism needed annoyingly precise timing. It did not help that the controls sucked: I recently bought a PC controller and cannot imagine playing this game without one; however, I thought it was a very poor choice to place the two main buttons that you use for jumping (A and B) right next to the button that you need for shifting (the right trigger). It VERY often happened that I had to make a precise sequence of jumps, alternating A and B buttons, and then accidentally shifted out of the shadow world because I pushed down on the right trigger (then usually falling towards an earlier part of the level).

Other annoyances were:
(1) No support for control remapping;
(2) The game spontaneously moving you in the game world to a different spot, when it considers that you have solved a puzzle, while you aren't finished exploring yet -- and the game making it impossible to return to your previous location;
(3) Invisible walls placed in spots where you would not expect them;
(4) Some places that are necessary to visit and seem unreachable, but can be reached if you manage to just make the right jump;
(5) Some obstacles that deliberately shift you out of the shadow world when you touch them, while these same objects have no effect on you in other places of the game;
(6) The game only saving when you solve one of the (about) two dozen puzzles, and no support for manual saves; and
(7) Controls that you only need near the game's end which the game never explains (in particular, the ability to zoom with light sources using the left trigger).

These annoyances mainly come up in the last act of the game, so most of the game I considered a reasonable challenge -- and frankly, even the last act would be completely reasonable if they had made a few minor tweaks.

I wouldn't pay full price for the game, but I got it in the Steam sales and it is definitely worth getting at a discount. It is sufficiently entertaining and original for that.

Continue to play this. Have only 1 mission left of the main quest. I like it. But the story feels like it not the full story, choice of the two areas Udûn (with The black gate) and Nurn seems strange to me, and where did Gollum go. And I believe that they pushed this game out a bit to early. Anyway a good AAA game.

Running around in Stonefalls trying to complete the missions here for the Cadwell's Silver. Thought that I would play this more this week, but I have played more of Shadow of Mordor instead. Maybe I complete that game this weekend. In that case I will have a lot of time to play this next week.

After retiring AC3 due to its general lack of quality (boring, buggy and blah) I plugged in the fighting sticks and started playing the story mode to see if it worked with fight sticks. It does and I will be playing this co-op with my stepson this month so long that it holds his interest.
-----

Edit: Sadly, the co-op is only online and not couch... we played vs. and he got pretty good after spending some time in practice mode while I cooked and cleaned.

I'm really getting into this City Builder game. A lot of the buildings have a weird futuristic look (especially agricultural industrial buildings, for some reason), but the mod support is great and really adding to the experience. The traffic model is superior to every other city builder game, IMO, which is great. Superior to SimCity 4 in most (though not all) ways.

I played a few hours of Shadow of Mordor last night; I killed 3 of the 4 warchiefs that the game is telling me to kill. The fourth is proving to be difficult, mostly because his solitary bodyguard keeps coming back from the flippin' dead! I've killed this guy twice, and yet he stands by his master's side. The warchief has an ability to fire multiple shots at me, so a single volley from him can kill me. Meanwhile, the other guy can't be damaged by stealth attacks, by combat finishers, I can't vault over him, and he regenerates health. It's going to be bloody satisfying when I kill the both of them.

I'm still shocked at how nice the game looks on my not-up-to-spec PC!

I've also been able to sink a few hours into Fire Emblem: Awakening recently. I'm not sure how I feel about the game...I should probably stop playing it in favor of playing something I would find more engaging, but the sunk cost fallacy is pushing me to keep playing, since I spent so damn much on the 3DS and the game! Overall it's fun, but I am not crazy about reclassing -- some people can take a second class where they still get to use their highly trained weapon, whereas others can only change to a class where they have to start back from E-class weapons and lose all ability to use their other weapons. On top of that, going from a unit reliant on Magic to Strength (or vice versa) further complicates things. I'm too timid to use Master Seals since you can get so many more abilities and stat growth by using Second Seals instead.

I just used a second seal on Donnel (he starts in an awful class but has the best long-term growth potential; he is the Magikarp of Fire Emblem), and already he is leaps and bounds better than any other unit I have, to the point where I think I might have to not use him for the rest of the game...

After about a month away from the game, Seth and I put a solid 4 hours into Guild Wars 2 yesterday. We're on our level 40 story quests and are currently going through mine, where I am heroically lighting buildings on fire and slaughtering the people who run out (don't worry, they're bad guys). The game and combat still seem a bit boring, but DAMMIT I WILL GET TO MAX LEVEL WITH SETH IF IT KILLS ME. After this, I'll likely never play an MMO again.

I recently got a new Android phone, an LG G3. It's an upgrade from my previous phone that was really bottom-rung hardware. I have played a few games on it which I have picked up in previous Humble Bundles, including Galcon Fusion (cute, but pretty boring after an hour), Jack Lumber (it's good when you have a few minutes to kill), and also installed Bad Hotel, The Wolf Among Us (probably won't pick up the full pack of episodes, currently at $18), Machinarium, and The Last Express.

Since the hometown, Golden State Warrior won the Championship, I decided to pick up a basketball game.

NBA 2K15 has a little RPG, My Career mode in the game. I created a 6'6" shooting guard, Sammy Pope. He didn't get drafted, so he had to fight his way onto a lousy team. After two 5 game tryouts, he finally got signed on to the New Orleans Pelicans for a year-long contract.

It's fun answering the questions that come up, every so often and leveling up his abilities.

They allow you to create your own shoes in the game. Which is actually pretty neat choosing all the different pieces and composites. Only problem is my player needs a shoe endorsment, before he can wear his new shoes.

Fun time though. And the graphics are pretty sweet.

My goal is to make it onto the Warriors starting line-up, but right now just staying in the league is the challenge.

The GoG sale had Sokobond for $3, which got me to finally pick it up, and I've put a couple of hours into it. It's a pretty cute concept -- like a Sokoban game except that you can push multiple things but the blocks are atoms and will bond with each other if they're adjacent and have free bonds. The resultant unwieldy shapes make for some interesting puzzles.

The designer seems to have gone for the "simple puzzles using basic combinations of (no pun intended) elements" style, which works well enough, but means that (I'm guessing) I can't look forward to any larger levels of the sort that one might expect to see at the back end of a Sokoban level collection. I also don't want to suggest that the puzzles are all easy -- I don't think any of them have stumped me for very long, but most have required some thought and multiple attempts. I'm about 3/4 of the way through, I think. Thanks to

for the recommendation awhile back.

I've also picked up 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors again after a bit of a break, and finished out my third run, winding up with a rather dismal ending. I think I've seen all of the main rooms now, and have some theories as to what I need to do for the good ending. It's pretty unclear to me how to get the other two remaining ones, though, and I may have to explicitly map out some of the route information to look for possibilities.

This is a few weeks old, but I don't think I posted the great news that I finally finished a campaign on classic difficulty. I had so much fun I installed the Long War mod and have been sporadically playing (and enjoying that) over the last few weeks. If you dig Enemy Unknown or Enemy Within I heartily recommend Long War after you've beat the EU or EW campaigns.

It's just great.

Made some time to play the Norway scenario to a decisive victory. I think very highly of this game (I have Panzer General II roots) and so was glad to make time for it.

One thing I wished they incorporated into this game is a supply line model. In some scenarios/situations it feels a bit hokey to resupply or reinforce units when they're cut off or far ahead of the rest of the army.

Otherwise a superb game.

Where has this game been my whole life? I'm still working my way through the manual but I've managed to play about 4 hours and am loving it. The variety of nations, units, and pretenders is awesome. I love the recruitment and army building systems. This will be a huge time sink if I let it.

If you like turn based strategy (WEGO system) and a fantasy setting check it out. I got it for about 50% off or better during the Steam sale. Having played it now I think it is definitely worth retail.

I'm currently playing through Deus Ex: HR for the VGG Challenge. I'm giving it a try on the Give Me Deus Ex difficulty, and am trying for stealth (which I think I've screwed up? But I'm not sure. The game doesn't let you know directly) and pacifist. So far so good - just completed TYM, so I think I'm over half-way, maybe close to two thirds. Great game.

I've also been playing Long Live The Queen, playing through it a number of times - also for the VGG Challenge, and it's also a great game. It's been interesting to explore the large amount of content in this game, and to approach it from different angles.

Bought in Steam Sale. Having fun playing though no idea why. Transcript from yesterday:

My son (9) : What have you been playing lately, dad?
Me: Papers Please. It's a strange game where you're working at the border, checking passports and documents.
(long series of questions and answers about what border control is, and how that worked with the Iron Curtain. Yay for borders, so open, that I have to educatemy 9yr old on the subject - we went to Italy last Summer holiday, no border checks anywhere.)
Me: ...so yeah. Checking documents and passports. Earning money to feed your family.
Son: That sounds like... work.
Me: Actually, yeah. And it sort of feel like it.
Son: So why is it fun?
Me: ...I have no idea. But it still is!

Also started the career mode in KSP! Must be Kempeth rekindling my enthusiasm. Last time I played KSP, it didn't have a career option.

Man! It's hard leaving the atmosphere if you're not in sandbox mode and only have like 10 items to build a rocket with! Hard as in: I still didn't succeed in doing that!

Still lots of fun. I forget you can (and should) define several stages in your rocket, so upon launch, each time you hit the space bar a new stage is started, like "fire engine and boosters" or "detach lower part, fire up 2nd engines". Took me quite some time to figure out why my parachute deployed each time upon launch!

Got a couple hours in this past weekend, continuing on the main quest and jumping into multiplayer for the first time to try that out. Online coop is admittedly better than I expected, played a few rounds as an Archer, unlocking a few skills and getting some better inventory. Sessions are pretty quick, and manage to feel very much like Dragon Age.

During my single player session however, I did get into a scrap with a dragon who is probably a bit more powerful than I'm prepared to handle. I say that as I'm pretty sure I only managed to knock off about 20% of his (her?) health before everyone in my party was looking up at the sky from their backs.

Solo:
Sooooo....I kinda messed up my game. Apparently I didn't get psionics off of the first sectoid commander. Maybe I didn't capture him, I'm pretty sure I did. Anyways, I did the command ship mission and got the ethereal. Now I'm waiting for an elerium generator to finish so I can build the psionics lab, a 3rd workshop, and the gallop chamber. I'm a bit concerned, as it is August.

Duo:
My friend ran the alien base attack and did pretty well. He didn't run into chrysallids beyond the first room which had a spawn of 2. We're researching titan armour, and trying to build firestorms. We have not scavenged a lot of plasma weaponery, so we're actually running with laser weapons. We left it off at the beginning of the xcom base attack.

Not much has happened in this game. I'm just exploring out past the SE Wilderness. I'm pretty happy that my Samurai has gained missile shield and enchanted blade.

Finally bought a gamepad for my laptop which worked(I had no end of troubles trying to get the xbox controller to work with my pc,) and tested it on Child of Light. That is, after I got past more troubles with Uplay. What a steaming pile of used spitball paper that is. I won't be buying any other Ubisoft games which require Uplay unless they are just outstanding, amazing games.

Child of Light might have qualified. What an amazing, beautiful game. I was playing it a bit while also watching the World Cup, and my wife--who is the one who brought proper football into the house and played all the way into college--found herself watching my screen rather than the match. I've played it more than just testing the controller.

I have found confessions 1, 5, and 8. They are interesting, but I'm completely lost. I don't have a poet's mind.

A friend and I have finally gotten a schedule going of playing games together on alternate weekends. We started with Terraria, something I've been waiting to play for a long time. I tried the demo on xbox, and I couldn't control it worth a poop. I suspected it would work better for me on the computer and I was right.

I laughed a lot. I spawned in at night and I didn't even know the controls yet. I died so many times before my friend dug out his hideaway and I ran into safety. I then went into my options and checked out controls. And thought the "Save & Exit" referred to options. lol And of course when I came back in I was locked outside again, but I had an understanding of controls and managed not to die so many times. (Softcore, btw.) It was fun. Then I slaughtered lots of bunnies.

Version 0.19 is in test.

Test version (may be buggy)

I haven't been brave enough to try it out. Not sure why I have trepidation, I have used the test before and other users are running it...

Anyway this version opens up the relic tab:

"This version has the following:
Relics spawn between zone 100 and 2/3rds of your highest zone reached. If Iris is higher than 100, it spawns between Iris's zone and 2/3rds of your highest zone.
Relic level is based on the zone that you find it on."

The other game my friend and I played was this. I have played a lot of the solo game, but he had not. He wasn't even sure he would like it, but he said after 5 minutes he knew he wanted to play it more.

He picked Wilson and I picked the lighter chick. Quite a few things have changed since I played Don't Starve. What are those turkeys doing eating our berries!?!! DIE!!! Spark plugs for the alchemy station? And no unlocking?

I directed us to go exploring for buffalo, which we never found. After day 7 or so I was constantly on the verge of starving, taking hp sometimes. Then the devil dogs showed up, and killed us both. We killed a few first, but we didn't last. It was fun, and we switched to Terraria after that.

We lasted 10 days.

I made it through about half of Chapter 2. The combat is becoming a lot easier to work with, and the story is definitely picking up, though I do appreciate the glossary of characters.
