Chris Squire passed away today after a brief illness with Leukemia.

Chris was a revolutionary musician who changed the bass instrument's role within rock music. Simply, there was bass guitar before Chris Squire, and bass guitar after Chris Squire.

A true virtuoso and the only member of Yes to be with the band from Day 1 until his passing today - an amazing statement considering the sheer number of members that Yes has had throughout its years.

The man truly was unlike any other musician before and since.

Rest in peace, Mr. Squire. Thank you for all the wonderful years of concerts, memories, and for the music that will last forever.

His nickname was Fish. An anecdote revealed the source was his preference for long stints lounging in bathtubs.

Chris' playing style incorporated melodic basslines, as memorable as the harmonies... much like his contemporary John Entwistle.

Chris' style was mostly attacking and aggressive, never sitting in the background - following the lead. His bass was always co-lead or lead.

Board Game: The Impossible Machine
Except for the Drama 1980 tour, Chris never played Machine Messiah, his epic 10+ minute song. He always teased with the opening bars, but never allowed it to be played. There were plans of retouring the Drama album in 2016, but Chris won't be there. If it does take place, and that song gets played, much bittersweet tears will be shed by the audience members.

Chris was a big man. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 6'2" to 6'4" and ginormous hands. In his later years, he packed on some weight, making him look even more intimidating.

Stocky bass guitars looked like miniature props in his paws.

Along with Jon Anderson, Chris founding Yes in 1968. Chris was the only continuous member of the band throughout its 47 year and 21 studio and 11 live albums (does not include bootlegs).

If I have my facts correct, there were twenty members of Yes (both album and touring):

During the "dark years" of Yes (2004-2008, I remember every excruciating month slogging by), Chris Squire founded a band with his Yes friend (and now replacement ) Billy Sherwood, called Conspiracy. They made two albums (Conspiracy and The Unknown). Both were masterpieces and could have fitted anywhere on a 90s-00s Yes album easily.

Here is a live recording of the title single.

The reason I bought an Xbox 360, was so I could play Heart of Sunrise on Rock Band 3. I can now get it to ~70% on expert bass. I've heard this song three or four times live in the last two decades, most recently last year.

There is nothing like it anywhere else for me in the history of Rock. And it's mostly due to the epic Mr Chris Squire.
Rest in peace.

"Amazing Grace" was Chris' choice for a solo piece on "9012Live: The Solos" album. I'm a drummer, not a bassist, but I always saw this as an understated, but powerful piece. Fits in perfectly with the prog rock sound as Chris blends the traditional melody with his playing style. In college from 1985-1988, we put on laser shows to raise money for the Society of Physics Students. We used the Yes Version of "Amazing Grace" as an interlude between shows. I think I enjoyed watching people groove out to this song more than their reaction to the actual show.

In 2011, Chris Squire got together with Genesis' guitar virtuoso and rock monster Steve Hackett, to give birth to Squackett. Three years ago (June 6, 2012) they released their only album: A Life Within a Day.

Though not mind-blowing, the album is pretty good, with a mixture of pretty much everything... from classic rock to some prog passages, with a dose of AOR and Yes last albums pop-rock.

We'll miss their second álbum...cry

His only solo album, Fish Out of Water, was actually more amazing than most Yes albums.

Melodic, majestic, and tuneful, it will come as no surprise to true fans, but is a wonderful piece of work.

He will certainly be missed.
