Technically, I am still playing SpaceChem. I just finished the penultimate planet, and find that the very last level only has one mission. "End of the Line". It looks like hell. I am probably going to postpone this one till next weekend, and in the meantime play some of the ResearchNet levels. Or the Corvi 93 campaign, which I also got.

Completed this on Thursday.

Rocksteady has made another quality game in a franchise I'm just about sick of. If you've played previous games you know what you're in for here. There's a tiny handful of new gadets or mechanics, but not nearly enough to make this game feel remotely as fresh as the outstanding Arkham Asylum once did.

The biggest addition to the game is the Batmobile. Admittedly, you feel like a huge badass being able to dive out of a glide and land into the batmobile from anywhere (over road of course) with the push of a button. That's where the praise for it ends though. The batmobile simply isn't a great way of getting around a city when you have the ability to grapple into a glide with the press of a button. Once you've fully upgraded your grapple boost, you're launched into you're own gotham version of low earth orbit, able to get anywhere about the city as the crow flies much quicker than an automobile with jet rockets attached to it can. Additionally, some mad genius decided stealth batmobile sections would be a good idea. No thanks. The remaining uses of the car include ok-at-best puzzles on how to get your car on top of a nearby roof for various reasons or to "solve" Riddler Races -- I guess driving fast is a puzzle now?

The story ended up being pretty good. My highest praise goes to a "companion" you spend the large majority of the game with where the writing and voice acting shine. There are a metric bat-ton of twists and surprises. Unfortunately the biggest twist -- the identity of the titular Arkham Knight -- will come as a surprise to no one with a modicum of Batman lore knowledge.

My final complaint is that the true ending is hidden behind 100% completion. This wouldn't be so bad except Rocksteady has decided to take the Ubisoft approach to riddles once again and crammed 243 "challenges" into the game that all must be finished if you want to see the ultimate fate of Bruce Wayne. Thankfully YouTube exists.

Overall, I guess it sounds like I'm being pretty harsh on Arkham Knight, but I enjoyed my time with it. My disappointment stems from the samey-ness described above. If you've played previous game you know what you're in for.

Personally, I'm really excited to see what Rocksteady is going to get up to next. They're clearly talented folks and hopefully they'll get to spread those bat wings with whatever they cook up next.

My computer went splat.

While it's busy running checkdisk (I think we're on 48 hours now) I'm using the other computer, which doesn't have the fancy dance video card, so I'm limited in what it'll run. So I have been playing games that are less graphics intensive like Gnomoria. Startopia actually runs just fine, too, but I've had a hankering for this one since playing it. The freedom it has within it is much greater than Startopia which has defined buildings and such. Considering Gnomoria is basically Dwarf Fortress with graphics minus a billion 'features' that I've never used and couldn't care less about, I'm really liking it.

I'm super excited!

I just got my fourth relic with +4% Chance of Primal Bosses! This dramatically increases the number of Hero Souls I get per ascension. I think someone on /r/clickerheroes said it was like a 28% HS increase (over not having relics).

Now it is just a matter of exchanging relics I have with +4% PB for other relics with that same stat with relics that have better additional bonuses, more additional bonuses, higher rarity, or higher levels. Roughly in order of how I value them.

I made it to Chapter 3, finally. After a good run through several quests, I'm back to a part of the game that involves wandering around to trip over leads in my investigation.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
It's pretty clear that the game is going to make me choose between the Order and the Scoia'tael some time soon, where I am already prepared to support the dwarven and elven alliance. Now, if I could just figure out where the Salamandra hideout in the Temple Quarter is...

---

Ok, I found where I had to go and killed a dozen or so thugs. The city is (mostly) cleared out, so it's time to return to the swamps.

Been playing the sequel to the excellent Stealth Inc: A Clone in the Dark.

Levels in the first game are grouped in sets and accessed via a stage select screen. Each one feels very tightly put together, and there's an emphasis on speedrunning and perfectionism, as you're graded on time, stealth, and death-count.

The second game has a Metroidvania world to explore, with doorways to individual stages clumped in different sectors. I haven't decided if the overworld really adds anything.

There are new special abilities here via "gadgets" that you locate, but the core gameplay is virtually identical to the first game. So are the aesthetics. The soundtrack is not quite as excellent as the first game but continues the same musical style.

I'm not one to expect high levels of reinvention in a sequel, but this almost feels like a retuning of the same product, in the hopes of making it more accessible. We'll see how I feel once I get further along.

July 7th

I've cleared three sentinels in Stealth Inc 2 (I assume there are 8 in total). I think the overworld will get more interesting as your movement options expand.

Also decided to start Yakuza: Dead Souls, since it will be at least two more months before the release of Yakuza 5.

Might be silly enough to enjoy the characters and side-content... in spite of the truly broken 3rd person shooting. I mean, all of the reviews say this, but the shooting mechanics in this game are absurdly poor. Hoping there are a couple of easy ways to cheese through enemies and that it's not too much of a corridor slog.

I could see giving up on this one, though.

July 8th

Stealth Inc. 2 is really coming into its own. Half-way through sector four. The first two gadgets are great... not sold on the third one (manipulation of light / environmental sensors). Some cool brain teasers, but I almost feel like I'm brute-forcing my way through the puzzle aspects of those stages. Also, this is not a series that needs a well-developed narrative framework, but the first game had an amusing premise and a wicked sense of humor, whereas the second those things feel diluted. Not a fan of the cheesy low-tech cutscenes.

I'm trying to get through all of part 1 in Yakuza: Dead Souls before making a yay or nay conclusion. Slow going. No question that the shooting / zombie action is terrible (sometimes comically so, sometimes not). I want to wrack up at least a side-quest or two and see if maybe the combat is more fun with an upgraded shotgun or something. Also hoping to play at least a little while as Mad Dog Majima (the game shifts between four protagonists).

I was looking at a couple of days of solid, uncomplicated gaming time this weekend and got the urge to finally play this after 25 years of intending to. Unlike the later games, I figured it would be short enough for me to finish without pushing out other games and/or real-life projects I need to attend to. Pretty damn excellent so far... I like it much better than Ocarina or Wind Waker, largely because it doesn't seem so interminable while still maintaining the polish of those later titles. I've played 8 hours or so and just got the fifth crystal, so not too much further to go.

I had no problem traversing the game up this point, but knew I must have missed the sword upgrade somewhere (I had) and was annoyed to have to look it up. Somehow I managed to miss that darn frog despite walking through that area numerous times - I guess I had always jumped off the ledge and never moved far enough to the side to see it. While looking that up, I inadvertently saw the spoiler for the fourth bottle as well, which was equally annoying. Is that chest (the one in the Dark World equivalent of the Smithy) always there, or does it appear at some fixed point in the game? I could swear I looked very closely at that location and was disappointed not to find anything there. I had already figured out the second part of the puzzle (the locksmith) too. Somehow I just didn't see the darn chest sitting in front of me.

Anyway... great game, easily the best Zelda I've played. I expect to finish it tomorrow or Tuesday.

Playing short games at the moment and I won this one with the summer give away. It's a series of short puzzles in a surreal dream world. You are a creature that needs to lead sleepwalking Bob through the puzzles into his bed without getting him to fall off the level and/or wake up through other things.

It's fun. I'm somewhere in the second series of challenges. Each series has 15 challenges and there are 4 series. So I think it will prove me some more fun.

Also picked this game up in the Steam Summer sale and have been enjoying it. There's a surprising amount of depth to it, and lots to discover. So far my longest survival has been about 10 days, but I haven't made it to Winter yet.

After several games of Master of Orion on Hard level for a change, I got to where I was missing maps of land masses. Those colored dots on black space get a little old after a while.

So, I got back into Civ V after a long hiatus, and I played a game on a tiny map, on Prince level, with a random leader who turned out to be Bismarck. It was a strange game for me. I expanded as usual and established a strong position (chasing Netherlands up into a corner of my continent to keep his civ small). But perhaps since I was so well prepared for war, no one ever attacked me--and I didn't feel like attacking anybody else (and besides, for much of the game, I couldn't afford to build that big an army). Thus, it was an entirely peaceful game for me, though China, Netherlands, and Ethiopia fought each other at times.

It got strange when the World Congress got going. I'm used to hosting it and having my way in it, but in this game I remained a minor player there. Though I had founded Catholicism and spread it all over the world, Eastern Orthodoxy became the world religion. I was also last to choose an ideology, so I picked Freedom just because no one else had yet. But my people rebelled, forcing me to switch to Order.

By the 21st century, Ethiopia was only a little behind me, but it looked like I'd win by a comfortable margin if nothing untoward happened. But something did: Ethiopia pushed Autocracy into position as world ideology, whereupon my people revolted again. I spent many years at the end of the game just fighting off rebels. In desperation, I gave in and switched to Autocracy, but that made things only slightly better.

Time ran out, and I won, but I can't say I made much of a splash. First game where I ever tried out all three ideologies, though!

I've just started another game, this time as Morocco. Am doing much better this time; my people are happy and generating wealth, and with some effort I won an early war with Assyria.

Just started the last level and I'm actually enjoying it more then I expected. We'll see if that lasts till the final boss.

Iv'e had this forever from some Humble Bundle, but finally tried it. It's a hardcore 2D platformer/Clean-em-up. It's all about momentum and precision, which is great. Cleaning up leaves and dust has never looked so amazing and epic. The platforming mechanics have a surprising amount of depth, which unfortunately means it has a rather large learning curve. I tried some of the harder levels and I don't think I'll ever be at that level.

Originally picked this game up, because the Warriors won the Championship.
But my player, Sammy Pope wasn't good enough to get time on their team, so I joined the New Orleans Pelicans.

I took the Pelicans to the Championship on Sammy's shoulders. So, when I had the choice to resign with the Pelicans or finally join the Warriors...I signed with the Pelicans, because I liked their coach and some of the players.

Lo and behold the horrors of professional sports, the Pelicans traded away two of my favorite teammates and they changed coaches. So, pretty much my only reasons for staying with that team were now gone. And Sammy was stuck in a 4 year contract!

I freaked out at that point, thinking I might have to create a new character or sim through 4 seasons.....until I found the option to DEMAND A TRADE.

The GM and my agent came through. Now, Sammy is playing for the hometown Warriors!

Dominions 4, again. I started a six-player game last week, and finished it off late last night (/early this morning). I was Tir Na n’Og; my (normal) AI opponents were R’lyeh, Caelum, Lanka, Tien Ch’I, and Yomi. I played on the Frost… something map – it was basically one big strip of land that wrapped around the world, connecting back on itself in a couple places, with a smaller strip of land that connected to the bigger strip at two points. It was, all told, an excellent map. I engaged in extensive border wars with Tien Ch’I to the west and Caelum to my east (while both R’lyeh and Lanka mostly ignored me). I managed to buy time and build up two large armies against Caelum (one to distract and prevent enemy recruitment, and one to take key objectives) and one large army against Tien Ch’I (to distract them). All three armies were successful. My anti-Tien Ch’I army was able to defeat them entirely, taking their home province, killing their pretender, and laying siege to a throne that they had. My anti-Caelum distraction army broke in an attempt to retake a fortress I’d left mostly vacant, but did their job, as the other army was able to take Caelum’s throne, take most of their undefended provinces, and besiege their home province (denying them income and recruitment) before wandering up to help take Tien Ch’I’s throne (taking Tien Ch’I out of the game). With Tien Ch’I out, it was pretty easy to thwart an attempted Caelum revival, as they had few provinces and nowhere to go. My armies generally seemed better than my opponents, but I’d done a fair bit of research and had powerful air and nature wizards with good evocation spells (for thunder strike) and I’d been manufacturing equipment for front-line heroes, so that’s probably why.

With Tien Ch’I and Caelum out, I had no real opponents left. Lanka was mopping up Yomi, and R’lyeh was… brooding, I guess. As an aquatic nation, they didn’t seem to have a lot of land troops, and those troops weren’t good. They’d raided me early on, and even attacked an enemy army besieging my fortress on a shore next to their home (thanks, guys – don’t know why they did that, but whatever), and they never seemed very good. Problem is, they had an underwater throne and hundreds of troops to protect it, and I had nothing aquatic. So I figured I’d cross that road when I had to – leave it to the end. Lanka was barring the passage to their lands with a huge army, but as I knew they didn’t have much land, I figured the army had to be full of cheap troops. They attacked me first, surprising me and splintering their army off to take a bunch of my provinces. I’d correctly assessed the quality of their troops, however – I cut them off and hunted them down with minimal losses. It was then relatively straightforward to take my combined armies and take Lanka out. Lanka was harder than I’d expected – they were demon worshippers, and unsurprisingly their religion resulted in a domain of death and turmoil, and so my troops didn’t have enough supplies from the land to stay fed (they were continually starving). I love how this game thematically captures what the lands of the relevant gods would actually be like. In fantasy stories, the approach to the antagonist’s lair is always through a land of death and decay (think Mordor) – this game nails that. My god was a benevolent giant bird of air and fire, spreading order and growth, whereas their lord of necromancy and blood spread turmoil and death. Lanka had demons and undead to rely on, and thus didn’t need supplies the same way I did, but my superiority in numbers and magic won out. I’d been worried about R’lyeh, but while I conquered Lanka, I ringed R’lyeh with temples, and moved my Pretender next to their home province, in order to counteract their Pretender’s divine influence and to mitigate the effect of a throne they had. To my surprise, right after I took out Lanka, I managed to completely convert the R’lyehans to my religion, eliminating the need for a lengthy and costly invasion to take their throne, and winning the game.

I played some LYNE. It gets boring pretty fast, but I can imagine spending 15 minutes with it before I go to bed. It is almost like meditation.

Playing the second area of my Cadwell's silver mission, in Deshaan, a region in southern Morrowind. Been here before, but only in a expansion to the Morrowind game, and then only inside the city walls. Now I can also see the surroundings. And do all the quests in this region.

Played a bit of this unusual hidden object game. It's a totally different take on the genre, with lovely graphics to boot. The twist is that rather than finding a bunch of unqiue items in a cluttered scene, you are collecting sets of items that are 'hidden in plain sight' across several screens, like all the lightbulbs or all the handles.

Picked this one up for free on XBL. I dabbled with The Walking Dead: A TellTale Game Series - The Complete First Season but never got passed the first couple of scenes. The premise seems interesting enough but the controls are a bit cumbersome. I actually was OK with the left/right swipes, and button presses, until I encountered a situation where a red targeting circle appeared. With absolutely no guidance whatsoever (sure, I could have read the controls in the options menu) I promptly died...and died...and died. I finally figured out it was the left stick that controlled the movement, but I still had some issues moving the target ring to the right spot. The other complaint is the recurring lag/stutter, which really seemed odd on a game installed to the HDD. I liked the dialogue tree, and am hoping to see the consequences of my choices. I'll keep my eye out for the other episodes going on sale.

I’ve been playing more of this. I guess the biggest problem with it is that combat gets tedious. Each foe has a particular attack pattern, and figuring out when to guard, dodge, attack, or cast a spell is like figuring out a puzzle. So the first time you fight a particular enemy type, it’s tough – you don’t know what it will do, and you’re just hoping to beat it without taking too many hits. But figuring it out is fun. The second time or third time you fight it, you’ve got a strategy, it works, and it’s satisfying – you solved the puzzle and you beat the monster, either taking minimal or no damage, if you time it all right. …And then you fight it, like, twenty more times. And each fight takes a while. Also, the rewards for this in terms of character advancement are too far and few between. So that, in a nutshell, is what is wrong with this game. Well, there’s other things wrong, too (last night I was treated to an awkward and painful animation sequence that just didn’t work), but that’s the biggest problem, anyways.

As I’ve mentioned previous weeks, this game has a rating of 42% on Metacritic, when last I checked. Famitsu apparently gave this game 32/40. I have always assumed that Famitsu, being a Japanese gaming magazine, would be a source of insight and expertise on JRPGs, but perhaps I am mistaken? I am enjoying this game, despite the game itself (no seriously, I am), but telling readers this game is a 32/40 is like claiming my baby’s diaper bag is full of chocolate cake. I mean, everyone makes mistakes, but seriously.
