So this fall I started a Masters program in WVU's communication studies department that has a few interactive media (i.e., GAMES!) scholars in it. That's why I chose the program! I'm actually interested in doing research on boardgames: how people make decisions in the game, their social interactions, their interactions with the game as physical and conceptual system, how gaming ties into their social and cultural identities, and more!

But anyway, everyone here is constantly doing all sorts of research. Our Interaction Lab (#ixlab) are the ones specifically doing interactive media work. You may have seen one of my professor's AMAs about meaningful video games.

Anyway, I thought people might be interested in their research and might want to participate! Obviously you're under no obligation to do so, but it's pretty cool and it might be interesting to see what kinds of questions they're trying to answer. Plus they always have drawings for some kind of gift certificate for participants.

If you are aware of any other research game research projects actively seeking participants, I'll happily add those to this list as well!

I'll add new items to the top of this list for each new online study that comes up, so you can subscribe to the items if you want to find out about new ones. Older items will be left at the bottom for posterity.

This study will ask you questions about the games you play and your favorite MMO avatar to develop a more sophisticated understanding of how MMO players think and feel about their avatars. This is part of an ongoing project focusing on the nature of player-avatar connections and how they play a role in player experiences.

Participants in this survey are eligible for Amazon.com or Steam drawings for gift cards ($100 US, 85 Euro, or 3000 NTD, depending on where the participant lives).

You must be 18+ and have some video game experience to participate.

This survey is being offered in three languages:
English
German
Chinese

So this time, I personally am doing a research study! It's about how people experience and engage with the entire Warcraft franchise, including WoW, Hearthstone, and Warcraft I-III, as well as expectations regarding the upcoming Warcraft film.

You must be 18 years or older, currently residing in the U.S., and have played any Warcraft game at some point (not necessarily recently).

If you're interested in participating, please press start to continue power

The full study announcement: "I’m conducting a research study of how people experience and engage with the entire Warcraft franchise, including WoW, Hearthstone, and Warcraft I-III. We’re also interested in your thoughts on the upcoming Warcraft film. For this study, we’re looking for people aged 18+ living in the United States who have ever played any Warcraft game to take two surveys (10-15 minutes each) over the next four weeks. In exchange for participating in the study, everyone who completes both surveys will be able to enter in a drawing for a $100 Amazon gift certificate. Participation is voluntary and confidential."

My research group is doing a study on D&D characters in all formats! Not quite a video game, but thought I'd post it here due to some potential crossover interests.

You must be 18 years or older and have played D&D at some point (not necessarily recently).

The official call: "We are conducting a study of Dungeons & Dragons players, including a survey about their thoughts and feelings toward their D&D characters. If you play, please consider helping us out with this survey ... if you don't, please consider sharing the link! In exchange for participating, those who complete the survey can choose to opt into a random, confidential drawing for a $100 Amazon gift card. The survey should take about 15-20 minutes to complete."

This time, the study is being run by a class I'm in! We are interested in people's perceptions of their video gaming experience immediately after playing a game. So please go play a game right now and then take our survey! Or you can bookmark the survey or this geeklist item and return to it once you've actually finished a play session. The survey should only take about 15 minutes.

The official request for participation:
"We would like to invite you to participate in a research project designed to understand more about people's experience playing video games. In order to participate, you must be 18 years of age or older, and have some experience playing video games. If you agree to participate, you will answer questions about playing a video game.
Please fill out this survey directly after playing the game. The survey will take about 15 minutes of your time.

Thank you in advance for your participation in this study,
Dr. Keith Weber keith.weber@mail.wvu.edu"

If you consent to participate in the project, please press start to continue power

Edit: fixed incorrect survey link

Another research project from my department, this time about experiences using a variety of different video game controllers.

In order to participate, you must be 18 years of age or older, and have at least some basic video game playing experience. For your time, you’ll be entered into a private drawing for a $100 Amazon gift card. One winner will be drawn for every 250 people who participate.

EDIT: Accidentally edited this geeklist item. blush

Here's another university's study on the impact of roles on decision-making in RPGs.

Participants must be 18+.

If you participate, you will be asked to complete two tasks, separated by a minimum of 48 hours (don't worry, we'll remind you to come back after your first part!). The order of the tasks will be randomized. In one task, you will complete a short personality survey. We expect this part to last 20 minutes. In the other task, you will play an online video game and answer a brief survey regarding your experience. We expect this part to last 60 minutes.

If you consent to participate in the project, please press start to continue power

This is a research project that has been designed to understand more about the relationship between gamers and their avatars.

In order to participate, you must be 18 years of age or older, and have some experience playing video games. For your time, you’ll be entered into a private drawing for one of three $100 Amazon.com gift cards (odds of winning are approximately 1:500).

If you agree to take part, you will be asked to write about an avatar, or “video game character that you can control in a video game” that means a lot to you. You will also be asked a series of questions about your perceptions of that avatar.
